Lo scorso sabato la mia amica Ade ha ospitato uno swap party. Mi sono presentata con un valigione di vestiti nella speranza di riportarne a casa pochi.

Sugli accessori sono riuscita a prendere solo qualche fiore da mettere in testa (anche se ho un cassetto pieno di fiori che non metto mai) e una cintura di pizzo nero. Sui vestiti ho fallito, riportandomi a casa una valigia quasi altrettanto piena.

Last Saturday my friend Ade hosted a swap party. I showed up with a suitcase of clothes hoping not to bring back home loads of stuff.

About accessories I was able to only take some fake flowers (although I have a drawer full of fake flowers that I never wear) and a black lace belt. About clothes I failed, going home with a suitcase nearly as full.

Per cominciare, ho preso due giacche: un cappotto marrone molto carino con cappuccio e fiocco e una giacca corta imbottita beige, talmente morbida da poterla usare come maglione (potrei perfino pensare di stamparla).

For starters, I took two jackets: a brown coat with a hood and a cute bow and a padded beige short jacket, so soft that it can be used as sweater (I could even print it).

Ho ceduto al mio debole per i maglioni e ne ho presi davvero troppi: uno blu a collo alto, un cardigan azzurro, due cardigan neri, uno a trecce e uno di pizzo, uno beige con una macchia di candeggina che dovrei sistemare, un cardigan bianco con la parte anteriore in pizzo (è identico ad uno che avevo già, ma è così carino che pensavo di tingere l'altro) e uno arancione XL.

I succumbed to my penchant for sweaters and I took far too many: a blue turtleneck, a light blue cardigan, two black cardigans, a cable knit one and a lacey one, a beige one with a bleach stain that I should fix, a white cardigan with a lacey front (it is identical to one that I had, but it's so cute that I thought to dye the other one) and an XL orange one.

Poi ho preso una camicia lilla chiaro, una maglietta stupenda di pizzo bianco, una rossa scollata sulla schiena (anche questa macchiata da sistemare), una a righe rosse e nere (che era mia, ho swappato e poi ripreso).

Then I took a lilac blouse, a beautiful white lace shirt, a red one, low-cut on the back (with a stain too), a red and white striped one (which was mine, I swapped and then picked up again).

Ho preso anche dei leggings termici marroni per quando lavoro all'aperto in inverno e dei pantaloni di velluto viola da usare in palestra.

I also took the brown thermal leggings for when I have to work outdoors in winter and purple velvet pants to use at the gym.

Ho preso anche due paia di jeggings di Zara, uno grigio e uno blu, e dei pantaloncini verde militare.

I also took two pairs of Zara jeggings, one gray and one blue, and khaki shorts.

Zara e il problema dello stile gender-neutral/Zara and the problem of gender-neutral style

Lunedì parlavo della nuova moda genderless in Giappone, che vede principalmente bei ragazzi magri indossare capi e accessori in genere associati al genere femminile.

Di recente mi sono accorta che il gender neutral è tornato di moda anche in occidente, ma in maniera molto differente. L'esempio più lampante è la nuova collezione di Zara, chiamata "Ungendered," e venduta all'interno della linea economica TRF. Anche Selfridges ha recentemente lanciato una linea gender-neutral, ma che lo abbia fatto Zara è decisamente più significativo dato che i suoi prezzi abbastanza bassi, la sua potenza sul mercato e il suo essere una marca internazionale rendono la collezione accessibile molte più persone.

Il fatto che l'industria della moda si stia allontanando da una concezione binaria di sesso e genere può sembrare positivo, ma analizzando l'idea e questa specifica linea d'abbigliamento più da vicino si scoprono dei problemi enormi.

Partiamo dalla collezione di Zara: si tratta di capi basici in colori neutri, come magliette, canotte, jeans e felpe, ovvero quei capi che in genere si trovano nelle collezioni maschili, ma vengono indossati anche dalle donne. Non ci sono capi che in genere vengono associati alle collezioni femminili, come gonne e vestiti. In sostanza si riprende la solita idea che per le donne vestirsi "da uomo" vada bene e per gli uomini non vada bene vestirsi "da donna". La spiegazione più probabile è che l'identità maschile è ancora percepita come superiore, più potente, e quindi una donna che si veste da uomo potenzia la sua identità, mentre un uomo che si veste da donna si declassa.

E' interessante anche che come modelli della collezione siano state scelte persone immediatamente associabili ad un genere piuttosto che più androgine.

Piuttosto che una rivoluzione nella concezione di genere, sembra un'operazione commerciale che cavalca le tendenze del momento, come era già successo anni fa con la moda unisex.

Inoltre questa tendenza gender-neutral va in direzione opposta rispetto ad un'altra tendenza degli ultimi anni ovvero quella secondo cui è la moda che deve adattarsi alle varie tipologie di corpo e non il corpo alla moda. Trovo l'idea di fare capi diversi per le diverse forme del corpo innovativa, ma anche rivoluzionaria e liberatoria, perché corregge l'idea che esista un unico corpo "giusto", quello per cui sono pensati gli abiti di moda.

Il gender-neutral rischia di riportare alla ribalta un corpo androgino, alto e magro, e di fare sparire dagli scaffali i capi adatti ad un tipo fisico diverso.

Secondo me per risolvere il problema di una concezione di genere binaria nella moda, la soluzione non è uniformare lo stile limitando ulteriormente la libertà, ma togliere le etichette. Basterebbe togliere dai siti e dai negozi le etichette "Uomo" e "Donna" e lasciare ognuno libero di scegliere quello che preferisce.

On Monday I talked about the new genderless fashion in Japan, which is mainly rocked by cute skinny guys wearing clothes and accessories typically associated with female gender.

Recently I realized that gender neutral is trending in the West too, but in a very different way. The most striking example is Zara's new collection, called "Ungendered," and sold within the economic line TRF. Selfridges recently launched a gender-neutral line too, but that Zara did is much more significant because its affordable prices, its power on the market and its being an international brand make the collection accessible to a lot more people.

The fact that the fashion industry is moving away from a binary conception of sex and gender may seem positive, but by analyzing the idea and this specific clothing line enormous problems emerge.

Let's start from Zara's collection: it consists of basic items in neutral colors, such as shirts, tank tops, jeans and sweatshirts, that are clothes that are typically included in men's collections, but are worn by women too. There aren't items that are typically associated with women's collections, such as skirts and dresses. Basically it resumes the usual idea that for women to dress "like a man" is ok and for a men to dress "like a women" is disgusting. The most likely explanation is that male identity is still perceived as superior, more powerful, and so a woman who dresses as a man empowers her identity and a man who dresses as a woman downgrades it.

It's also interesting that the models chosen for the collection are easy to associate to a gender rather than androgynous.

Rather than a revolution in the conception of gender, it seems a commercial operation that rides the trend of the moment, as happened years ago with the unisex fashion.

Besides, this gender-neutral trend goes in the opposite direction with respect of another trend of the recent years, namely the one for which it is the fashion that has to adapt to the various body shapes and not the body to the fashion. I find the idea of ​​doing different clothes for different body shapes innovative, but also revolutionary and liberating, because it corrects the idea that there is only one "right" body, the one for which the clothes are designed.

Gender-neutral is likely to bring back in trend an androgynous body, tall and thin, and to make the clothes suited for a different body type disappear from the shelves.

I think that to solve the problem of a binary gender concept in fashion, the solution is not to uniform the style, further limiting the freedom, but to remove the labels. It would be enough to remove the labels "Man" and "Woman" from the sites and shops leaving everyone free to choose what they like best.

Mori at Zara

In autunno e inverno è facile trovare aggiunte ad un guardaroba mori anche nei negozi mainstream (una sciarpa, un cappello, un cardigan...), la stagione davvero difficile è l'estate.

Nonostante prevalgano linee dritte e abiti con tagli inadatti allo stile, da Zara si trovano vari capi adatti al mori, soprattutto camicie, maglioncini e qualche borsa (qui in ordine crescente di prezzo).

Il problema sono i prezzi molto alti, che non sono compensati da una qualità altrettanto alta (anzi, con il progressivo innalzarsi dei prezzi, la qualità pare essersi abbassata!), per cui consiglio se mai di prendere nota per i saldi.

In autumn and winter it is easy to find additions to a mori wardrobe even in the mainstream stores (a scarf, a hat, a cardigan...), the difficult season is summer.

Despite the prevalence ofstraight lines and clothes unsuited for the style, Zara has some nice things suitable for mori, especially shirts, sweaters and a few bags (here in ascending order of price). 

The problem is it has very high prices, which are not offset by an equally high quality (indeed, with the gradual rise of the prices, the quality seems to have lowered!), So I suggest to take note and wait for the sales.

Wishlist + shopping

Anche se tornata dalla Spagna dovrò risparmiare il più possibile (soprattutto perché andrò a Lucca Comics, dove terrò uno stand con un gruppo di fumettisti di cui faccio parte), non me la sentivo di saltare la consueta wishlist stagionale. In fin dei conti ora ho un lavoro (più o meno...) e ci sono sempre i mercatini dell'usato!
Quindi ecco cosa mi piacerebbe comprare:

- quello che mi serve di più è una borsa nera seria. Quella che possiedo ha un enorme teschio sul lato e purtroppo le occasioni in cui posso indossarla stanno calando vertiginosamente

- maglietta bianca: ho macchiato e poi tinto con il the quella perfetta che avevo e non riesco più a trovarne una così bella

- pantaloncini marroni. Ho sfondato l'ennesimo paio di pantaloncini marroni a palloncino e ne vorrei un altro paio (a cui aggiungere pizzo in fondo) perché erano quelli che usavo di più. Purtroppo però pare che il modello stia passando di moda quindi se ne trovano solo di bruttissimi

- smalto bordeaux

- giacca tinta unita o scozzese. Mi serve come base per un progetto di restyling che medito da un bel pezzo, ma non vorrei spenderci molto e nelle bancarelle si trovano solo giacche con spalle super imbottite

- gonna lunga scozzese. Se non la trovo in giro penso che me la farò da sola.

- basco. Pensavo quasi di farmelo in casa con il pile, non dev'essere difficile.

- poi mi piacerebbe avere un tot di scarpe di cui però posso tranquillamente fare a meno (anche perché le scarpe sono una delle cose che costano di più): in primis degli stivali con frange. Li vorrei per sostituire quelli che ho rotto un sacco di tempo fa. Li ho cercati parecchio, trovandone solo versioni orrende o costosissime -.- Poi delle scarpe sullo stile delle maryjane della Birkenstrok e delle scarpe con il laccio a T e i buchini davanti. Da bambina le odiavo, ora le bramo.

Even if when I'll come back from Spain I'll have to save as much as possible (especially since I'm going to Lucca Comics, the largest italian comic convention, where I'll have a stand with a group of other cartoonists), I didn't want to skip the usual seasonal wishlist. In the end, now I have a job (more or less...) and there are always flea markets!

So here's what I'd buy:

- What I need the most is a serious black bag. The one I own has a huge skull on the side and unfortunately the occasions when I can wear it are dramatically decreasing

- White T-shirt: I stained and then dyed the perfect one I had and I can not find another beautiful one

- Brown shorts. I broke yet another pair of brown balloon shorts and would like to buy another pair (to whitch add lace at the bottom) because they were the ones I used the most. Unfortunately, it seems that the model is going out of fashion so I could only find ugly models

- Burgundy nail polish

- Plain or plaid jacket. It would serve as the basis for a restyling project that I had for quite a while, but I don't want to spend a lot into, but in the used clothes stallst I only found jackets with super padded shoulders

- Plaid long skirt. If I can not find it around I think I'll make it from scratch.

- Beret. I was thinking of making it with pile, it should not be so difficult.

- Then I'd have a certain number of shoes, I can easily do without (also because shoes are one of the things that cost more): first of all fringed boots. I would like them to replace the ones I broke a long time ago. I searched them a lot, finding just ugly or expensive versions -.- Then shoes similar to the maryjane by Birkenstrok and shoes with T-straps and little holes in front. As a child I hated them, now I long for them.

Intanto sono stata fortunata e con gli ultimi saldi ho trovato da Zara la semplice t-shirt zafferano che cercavo da qualcosa come due anni. E' di bel cotone spesso ed è costata solo 4€.

Meanwhile, I was lucky and I found on the latest sales at Zara a simple saffron t-shirt that I was looking for for something like two years. It's made of a nice thick cotton and has costed only 4€.

Ho anche comprato, purtroppo non scontate, un paio di matite per gli occhi a 2,50€ l'una da Kiko, perché ho deciso che voglio riprendere a truccarmi più spesso. Le ho scelte in rosa-oro e argento, da usare come sostituti più semplici e veloci all'ombretto, che finisco per non mettere quasi mai.

I also bought, unfortunately not on sale, a pair of eye pencils for 2.50 € each at Kiko's, because I decided that I want to put on make-up more often. I chose them in golden pink and silver, to use them as a simplest and fastest substitute for eyeshadow, that I end up almost never putting up.
