Inspiring me Quilt: Blocks 16-24

Hi everyone!! After two months and a half since I sew some blocks, today I show you some more  for my Inspiring me Quilt, my own design using Sizzix dies and planning to get 100 blocks.
Well, here  they are nine new blocks, some with embroidery with DMC floss.
I´m sure you can find some inspiration and even take a chance to try some of these ones.

You can find some of these dies in more of my Inspiring me quilt blocks but I always try to find a new way  displaying the fabrics.
All of them are 8.5" finished.
No more words and here they are.

A happy trio of baby quilts

Hello again, and Happy Easter to you.
As you can see, from the photo below, I have made progress on the baby quilts - and I think I might be able to finish them this weekend.
I think you'll agree they look quite different, but all have the rectangle in common, it was a happy decision to make the task easier, which worked for me!

This quilt is a rail fence, using 2 rectangles for each block.
I laid the whole quilt out and then made the blocks for each row, joined the rows and there we have a cot quilt top.
This quilt uses the square with the rectangle to make a rainbow of blocks that I joined together in sequence.
This is actually the quilt I made first - using the white strip to alternately with the bright spots.
Now they just need to be quilted and bound - but I think I might manage that this weekend.
So not quite HRH but certainly a bright beginning!
Next week I think I will be showcasing a 'new' die - it's not been in our catalogue for very long and this will be my first time using it - so watch this space!
Enjoy this very special weekend.

Rainbow Baby quilt

Have I mentioned that my nephews and niece are all expecting babies at about the same time!!
Well the babies have all be born - in the space of 11 days - so now I have to get sewing pretty quickly.
I had thought that I would design completely different quilts for each one - but reality and time pressure has won the day - I am going to make them all from the same fabrics but make each slightly different - my fabrics are these -
I bought these lovely spotted fabrics a little while ago and hadn't decided what to do with them - so I've started by cutting a lot of rectangles using the new Big Shot Plus http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/660020/sizzix-big-shot-plus-machine-only-white-gray and Bigz die 659837 - 2" x 4" finished.
To begin I cut 6 rectangles from each of the 17 fabrics.  I think it will be lovely to include all of the colours for the boys and the girl - no sex discrimination here!
to cut white strips to form sashing.
Now at the moment I don't know how many of anything I'm going to use for each quilt - I know that's not helpful but this is as far as I've got with the first quilt -

All I can say is that you'll have to look at my blog again next week for more details - I plan to have this quilt made (maybe not quilted though), I'm after all the babies don't know I running late with their presents!!!
Also next week I'll have a gift to make for Mother's Day.
So now I'm off to have a cup of tea and some lunch before continuing the quilt.
Last reminder that I'll be running workshops in Glasgow, Sewing Knitting and Quilting Show at the SECC. I hope to see some of you there.

Snug as a bug!

That's what I'll be when this little lap quilt is complete -

I decided to try to use up all of the wool fabric that I had - so this really is a scrap quilt - which is already becoming a favourite before it's quite finished - maybe partly because the weather forecast is for much colder weather and I will be able to curl up under this beauty!
To get the most out of the pieces of wool I had I decided to cut more squares and rectangles in different sizes - I have already cut out rectangles using Bigz die 658113 - 8 1/2" x 4 1/2" unfinished

and squares using Bigz Die 659838 - 4 1/2" unfinished square - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/product/659838/sizzix-bigz-die-square-4-finished-4-1-2-unfinished
using the Big Shot machine, and then
I also cut out some 3 1/2" unfinished squares with die http://www.sizzix.co.uk/catalog#q=657608
and some 3 1/2" x 6 1/2" unfinished rectangles - http://www.sizzix.co.uk/catalog#q=657625
My plan was to create 12" finished blocks - so I could make some using all of the 4"/8" shapes and some using the 3"/6" shapes --
The photo below shows the lay out for the 4"/8" pieces
and this photo shows the layout for the 3"/6" pieces. ( the photo is a cheat because the proper one came out a very strange colour so I laid out another block but didn't have enough rectangles!!!)
I had enough pieces to make a total of 16 blocks which I decided to lay the pieces out randomly, but took care to make sure that the colours and patterns were mixed in each row.
I joined the blocks into 4 rows of 4 and then joined the rows - so I have a lap quilt measuring 48 1/2" square.
Just a note that I still only used a 1/4" seam and I pressed the seams flat open on the wrong side to try to reduce bulk at the seams.
I like it so much I'm going to add another photo -
I'm going to back the quilt with either a plain wool or fleece - I'll show you a photo of it finished next week.
And just as I was going to finish this blog - one of my friends, Alex, suggested that there were enough pieces left to make a cushion so I trimmed the remaining pieces to 3 1/2" squares and laid them out like this -

which when stitched together became a cushion front -
which then just left this -
I'm very pleased to have used so much of these beautiful fabrics and will show you the finished quilt and cushion next week - along with a lovely valentine project.
Keep warm this week - I'm hoping for snow to go and play in with the grandchildren - we can hope.

Rectangles and Squares quilt finished

Hi  everyone! How is August going ? Today I  want to show you my Rectangles and Squares quilt finished at last . It took some time sewing and quilting but I was wishing to have it on my hand finished and in some place at home.
The tutorial can be found in this post , just the last day in May , some more than two months ago.
I´m  in love with this quilt because it ´s better than I hope after deciding the quilting.

For the back  I   added some more rectangles and squares , red fabric and  some rest of a soft beige .
The same red looked like great as binding.

Supplies

658324
Sizzix Bigz XL 25" Die - Squares, 2" Finished (2 1/2" Unfinished)

657605 ( 659837 new code )

Sizzix Bigz Die - Rectangle, 2" x 4" Finished (2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Unfinished)656847  Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Bigz XL 25", 1 Pair

657900Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (Powder Blue & Teal)

Note:  this time I don ´t say size exactly as this is a quilt that you can sew as big as you want.

For the top :

White fabric
Print fabric

For the backing:

White and print fabric
Red fabric
Some fabric that matches with the print  on the top.
Light cream thread quilting

Batting , mine it is  a mix of cotton and acrilic

Binding :
Red fabric

I usually think about how to quilt a quilt when it is finished.  It´s not an easy thing everytime .  Just  look and try to " see " what it is better  or how I would like . This time I only knew I wanted  to sew  the same thing on the squares, as a " ladder ". This was a big swirl.
You can see more pics of my quilting process in my Instagram
Then I decided to fill the rectangles in white with continuos very little swirls, so the big ones look like pop up and I love  this effect. Don´t you ?
Big and long swirls too for the border

The size is 39.5" x 44"

It´s incredible how just simple geometric shapes can do a beautiful quilt. Thanks to Sizzix for making these useful dies !!

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!!

Love

Mercedes

Materiales :

658324
Sizzix Bigz XL 25" Die - Squares, 2" Finished (2 1/2" Unfinished)

657605 ( 659837 new code )

Sizzix Bigz Die - Rectangle, 2" x 4" Finished (2 1/2" x 4 1/2" Unfinished)656847  Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pads, Bigz XL 25", 1 Pair

657900Sizzix Big Shot Machine Only (Powder Blue & Teal)
