Material Architecture

This paper examines the importance of considering the behavioural properties of construction materials in the process of developing architecture projects in academia and it interrogates the pedagogic effectiveness of design-build projects in architecture schools. To illustrate this idea, the paper showcases the active-bending plywood research pavilion developed at the University of Calgary during the fall semester of 2015.

Ceramic material is certainly a key element in the cultural heritage, particularly in historical buildings. This material involves specific problems when addressing preservation, as well as conservation and restoration interventions.
This course is coordinated by International Association YOUTH IN CONSERVATION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE-YOCOCU Spain, co-organized by Geosciences Institute IGEO (CSIC, UCM), Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass (SECV) and the Ceramic and Glass Institute (ICV-CSIC) and sponsored by ECerS, the JECS Trust and SECV.
The main goal of the course is to offer a training program of short duration focused on the ceramic material used in architectural heritage, including structural and decorative elements. Raw materials and technologies used for manufacturing, alteration and decay processes, characterization techniques for study and analysis, as well as new trends in conservation treatments will be addressed.

Sustainable construction development is a recent term that is required to create an eco-friendly built environment using renewable and recyclable resources and to reduce energy consumption and waste within protecting the natural environment. This term means such an improvement that pleases the current requirements without limitation of the prospect of sustaining requirements in future. Many problems face builders while executing projects, especially these projects were decided to be built over difficult topographies, such as rivers, falls, inclinations, caves, ridges, cliffs, and mountains. Soil is used as a building material in different parts of the world. Earth construction, with the least demand for resources, is economically the most efficient means for house construction in developing countries. The recent flood in Kerala (August 2018) resulted in a huge loss of lives, many lost their homes, houses partially destructed, landslides occurred, many animals died. The overall effect was devastating. Post-flood Kerala saw huge deposits of waste and clayey soil accumulated in lands, which needs to be cleared and life should be brought back to normal. Why can't we use these deposits as raw material for construction? To study this possibility, deposited soil from the areas of Periyar, Kerala, where the most amount of deposits were found and several tests were conducted on it to check its efficiency. Different types of blocks were prepared from this soil with and without adding stabilizers. Tests such as compressive strength and total water absorption were conducted on these blocks to evaluate their strength and durability. Finally, the values and properties of prepared sample blocks were compared and its efficiency to be used as a construction block is proved. The block can be made in low-cost and is energy efficient. This paper is a review of the construction of such clay blocks produced from flood deposits. It's an overview to demonstrate the scope of building walling using these clay bricks. Its advantages are realized in terms of rescuing the heritage and as a rediscovered environmentally friendly building material.

The concepts of expression, expressiveness and expressionism present the key terms on which contemporary architectural and artistic works are based. Although these are essential esthetic categories, the explanations of these concepts are not clearly defined in scientific and theoretical texts. When the term expressionism is mentioned, it often implies the stylistic direction in architecture and the arts, which was created and lasted until the beginning of the XX century in northern Europe (especially in Germany and the Netherlands), and in which the artists have twisted the reality with exaggerated and energetic strokes to express their inner visions, ideas or emotions. However, contemporary theoretical discussions in the arts and architecture point to the manifestation of expressionism in other periods and contexts as well. The basic aim of the text is a critical discourse of interrelations among esthetic categories of expression, expressiveness and expressionism; reexamination of their positions and roles in the system of visual expression, as well as the examination of the starting hypothesis in research, according to which expressionism in architecture is a radical creative tendency with distinctive choleric-sanguine characteristics.

Oslanjajući se na stavove poznatog umetničkog kritičara Herberta Rida (Herbert Read), po kome realizam, idealizam i ekspresionizam nisu posebni pravci u umetnosti, već predstavljaju stalne osnovne činioce u svim umetnostima, u ovom radu se razmatra mogućnost postojanja elementarnih stvaralačkih opredeljenja i u arhitekturi. Polazeći od osnovnih vidova opažanja i predstavljanja sveta oko nas, putem komparativne analize i primera iz drugih oblasti, izložena je teza da bi adekvatan pandan Ridovim osnovnim činiocima u umetnosti - realizmu, idealizmu i ekspresionizmu, u arhitekturi bili pojmovi mimezisa (mimikrije), asocijativnosti i ekspresije. U zavisnosti od društveno-političkih, kulturno-istorijskih i drugih okolnosti, neki od ovih činilaca s vremena na vreme izlaze na površinu i zaogrnuti miljeom vremena, javljaju se u nekom novom ili starom obliku, koji možemo prepoznati kao umetnički pravac ili stil.

From the first fieldtrips for the design of a library in Burundi to involving over 150 workshop participants in the construction of a public building in Belgium, the stories compiled in this book tell how BC architects & studies engage in acts of building. BC believes that, in order to have a positive impact on our society, architects need to intervene beyond the narrow definition of the professional who designs and controls the execution of buildings. Hence, BC ventures into material production, contracting, knowledge transfer and community organization, which all influence their design approach.

The book is structured around a collection of stories that take artefacts as points of departure. These tools, machines and formwork were used for the construction of four projects. Around them, a multitude of actors and processes come to the fore and, from there, the image of a hybrid architecture practice starts to emerge. BC’s take on the act of building progressively evolves from local and very specific experiences, as the stories bring forward a series of interwoven themes, such as the choice to work with local resources and skills, the interest for materials such as earth and hempcrete, the thrill of pioneering, the risks that come together with experimenting, the inscription into an existing building culture and network of builders, the organization of workshops or building camps, the need for fruitful collaborations, the necessary redefinition of the professional boundaries, the direct engagement in material production and construction, etcetera. By describing the way BC designs and performs the act of building, the book suggests ways in which BC hopes architecture can contribute to our world in transition.

This book is the result of the work that Pauline Lefebvre, researcher and theoretician of architecture, conducted at, with and about BC architects & studies. She researched their practice as part of her broader inquiry about architects’ increased involvement in construction and materials as a renewed form of political engagement in architecture. For four months, she was a full-time participant in the activities of the office. From her direct observations and a series of interviews, she collected the stories that are told in this book, and the themes that reflect the peculiar characteristics of BC’s work. Together with BC, she designed this book as both an independent proposition and a complement to the participation of BC architects & studies in the 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara.

Non è chiaro se la scelta di fortificare il sito nasca in funzione della protezione di una strada o di un particolare percorso verso la costa, ma è certo che esso domina la breve chiusa sul fondovalle posta tra Bagnasco e Pievetta in alta val Tanaro, una dei segni morfologici più significativi dell'area. Tale posizione strategica ha avuto evidentemente un ruolo di rilievo all'interno di un territorio, posto a cavallo tra l'alta pianura piemontese e la riviera ligure di ponente, da sempre vocato al transito. La Costa della Capra è costituita da una serie geologica composta dalla sequenza carbonatica la cui originaria stratificazione non ha subito particolari deformazioni a seguito degli eventi metamorfici alpini. Tali forze orogenetiche l'hanno fatta emergere in corrispondenza dei primi contrafforti montani non ricoperti dai depositi terziari, sensibilmente meno consistenti per compattezza, proprio per non aver subito metamorfismo.

This research addresses the possibility of using the perception of building materials as a tool for upgrading the architecture. This issue is addressed by this search through two themes; the first theme handles the theoretical background of perception and the potential of using it for expressing the design's objective, idea or function, The second theme addresses the building material and its role in the building, its classification and the techniques of dealing with it for enhancing its properties, so that such material shall have new uses and alternatives changing its texture in terms of the form, function and benefit. Perception levels of the material representing an essential standard in selecting the material for design process for achieving a successful architectural building.

يتناول البحث دراسة امكانية استخدام ادراك مادة البناء كأداة في الإرتقاء بالعمارة ويُناقش البحث هذا الموضوع من خلال محورين ، يتعرض المحور الاول للخلفية النظرية للادراك وإمكانية استخدامه للتعبير عن هدف أو فكرة أو وظيفة  للتصميم ، بينما يتناول المحور الثاني مادة البناء ودورها في المبنى وتصنيفها وتقنيات التعامل معها لتحسين خواصها فتصبح لهذه المادة استخدامات جديدة، وبدائل تغيير ملامسها من حيث الشكل والوظيفة والمنفعة .واستنباط مستويات ادراك المادة التى تُمثل معيار هام فى اختيار المادة لتكامل العملية التصميمية و تحقيق مبنى معمارى ناجح

sua connotazione di «città estiva», di spazi coltivati, di alpeggi «caricati», è ormai silente da decenni. E attraverso il momento del silenzio, ci rammenta Eugenio Turri, si ha il senso del tempo: «così nel silenzio, nell'auscultazione delle voci profonde della natura, ci scopriamo improvvisamente assoggettati al tempo e alla storia, non solo in quanto essere viventi, ma soprattutto-ciò che più contain quanto agenti trasformatori della natura e costruttori di forme. Le quali durano sin quando non decidiamo, spinti dall'ansia di un presente insaziabile, che esse vanno sostituite con nuove forme…» 1. Così il paesaggio della Val Grande osservato oggi, privo di attività, esprime, nel suo essere silente, la sua essenza di spazio connotato di segni e sedimentazioni entro una natura che, nella sua fissità/evoluzione ci fa percepire i fili del tempo. La metafora letteraria della «città estiva» (VANNI OLIVA),-si contavano infatti 178 i diversi corti e alpeggi della Val Grande che si riempivano ed animavano stagionalmente per le diverse attività agro-silvo-pastorali-, lascia dunque il posto alla concretezza del paesaggio percepito oggi nel suo intreccio tra il passato ed il presente, ma anche alla lettura di quella «invisibilità» d'azione di edificatori di paesaggi rurali (richiamati da Carlo Cattaneo prima, e da Eugenio Turri poi, passando per Emilio Sereni), attori del passato che ci introducono ai tempi lunghi della storia, che danno sostanza storica al paesaggio. Sull'archetipo del «paesaggio della sussistenza», contrapposto a quello della wilderness, si è fatto leva per delineare il percorso di ricerca che si presenta con questo nuovo volume della collana Documenta, e per darne sinteticamente il riferimento metodologico di tipo diacronico. Lo svelamento del sistema dei segni, di quanto dà sostanza storica al paesaggio valgrandino e che ci fa parlare di uno specifico paesaggio culturale, e l'ascolto delle voci che di questo paesaggio raccontano, è quanto si è iniziato con la ricerca interdisciplinare svolta con il Dipartimento Interateneo di Scienze, Progetto e Politiche del Territorio (DIST) del Politecnico e dell'Università di Torino. Segni e testimonianze che vanno nella direzione della costruzione di quella geografia della memoria avviata con le precedenti pubblicazioni della collana, ma soprattutto segni che dobbiamo interpretare per raccordarli al nostro agire e/o non agire nel territorio del parco e del suo intorno. Verso un progetto di paesaggio per la Val Grande La necessità di un «progetto di paesaggio», inteso come strumento di conoscenza, di diffusione e di presa di coscienza dei caratteri costitutivi ed evolutivi del territorio valgrandino, è allo stesso tempo fondativo delle finalità della ricerca, e di prospettiva per le azioni future del parco, prima fra tutte quella ecomuseale. L'intento iniziale era infatti quello di formare una maggiore consapevolezza verso il valore di un paesaggio ed i suoi caratteri complessi e processuali, senza ridurlo in facili icone e definizioni, declinandolo essenzialmente entro l'antinomia sussistenza/wilderness. Allo stesso tempo gli elementi di conoscenza e interpretazione possono costituire, come ci ricorda Roberto Gambino nelle sue riflessioni conclusive, non solo il contesto ideale per testare le nuove concezioni del paesaggio, ma finanche per costruire risposte (anche attraverso un progetto di paesaggio) agli interrogativi sottesi alle politiche di governo del territorio del parco in relazione al rapporto wilderness e identità locali, alle 1 E. TURRI (2004), Il paesaggio e il silenzio, Marsilio Venezia, p. 16 Interrogarsi sul paesaggio ragioni della natura e le percezioni ed aspirazioni degli abitanti. Da una parte l'obiettivo della ricerca è stato quello di mettere a punto e sviluppare un processo di lettura diacronica della struttura sistemica del paesaggio a partire da tre linee di approfondimento ed un ambito territoriale di sperimentazione: quello della bassa Val Grande, della Valle Intrasca e della bassa Ossola, ovvero i territori del parco corrispondenti alle cosiddette «terre di mezzo», aree insediate permanentemente sia con abitati stabili, sia con attività stagionali. Le tre linee di analisi, studio e approfondimento dovevano indagare i caratteri geo-strutturali, naturali e culturali del paesaggio dei territori individuati, la formazione e le trasformazioni nel tempo, la sua percezione sociale. Le osservazioni paesistiche e la lettura descrittiva del paesaggio dovevano svolgersi attraverso un approccio multidisciplinare alla conoscenza delle relazioni, delle interconnessioni che legano tra loro fenomeni diversi, sia d'ordine naturale che culturale. I saggi che seguono, danno dunque compiutamente conto di una lettura, interpretazione e classificazione teorico disciplinare per matrici antropiche, matrici naturali, matrici socio-culturali e matrici percettive, ma anche di una identità socio-locale espressa dal lavoro in campo con incontri ed interviste. Nel suo duplice aspetto di apporto tecnico-disciplinare e di rapporto con testimoni del tempo e del territorio (vecchi e nuovi abitanti), la ricerca porta ad alcune riflessioni, le une sulle acquisizioni progressive di più discipline scientifiche all'analisi paesaggistica vuoi nei suoi portati storico rappresentativi (si vedano i capitoli V, VI, e VII su persistenze e variazioni a partire dall'analisi dei catasti storici), vuoi in quelli ecologici, ambientali e insediativi; le altre alle nozioni di cultura e di patrimonio culturale. Quest'ultima, come richiama l'UNESCO in diversi programmi e documenti, si è ampliata notevolmente spostando il baricentro dai monumenti ai beni culturali, dagli oggetti alle idee, dal materiale all'immateriale. Il patrimonio inoltre rimanda a simboli e rappresentazioni, ai «luoghi della memoria», e quindi all'identità. Nell'ottica ecomuseale il patrimonio culturale è, in accordo con H. De Varine, «il risultato, materiale ed immateriale, dell'attività creativa continua e congiunta dell'uomo e della natura: in questo senso lega concretamente il passato al presente e al futuro», diventando quindi anche per il parco e il suo paesaggio «uno scenario e una risorsa per lo sviluppo» 2. La sfera del patrimonio culturale investe l'insieme della sfera comunitaria, quella estetica, quella emotiva e simbolica, oltre che i modi in cui, nella sua manifestazione paesistica, ed in linea con la Convenzione Europea del Paesaggio, è riconosciuto e fatto proprio dalla comunità, e fatto oggetto di progettualità nella sua possibile declinazione ecomuseale, ma non solo. Di sfondo infatti a questo patrimonio culturale sedimentato, che dà sostanza storica al paesaggio, ed una comprensione e interpretazione dei caratteri costitutivi ed evolutivi del territorio valgrandino, c'è il tema cruciale, oggi «identitario», del rapporto con la wilderness. Interrogarsi sul paesaggio Guardiamo al paesaggio per comprendere il senso del nostro agire che concretamente possa incidere sul territorio del parco, ma anche per trovare risposte a quanto origina la cosiddetta «wilderness di ritorno», la Val Grande silente. La conoscenza storica dei processi territoriali, parte tangibile e articolata della ricerca del Dipartimento Interateneo di Scienze, Progetto e Politiche del Territorio (DIST) del Politecnico e dell'Università di Torino insieme a quella interpretativa e comunicativa 3 , unita 2 H. CLUEB Bologna 3 Si ricorda infatti che il gruppo interdisciplinare di ricerca ha predisposto contenuti e suggerimenti museografici, per l'allestimento della mostra «dal paesaggio della sussistenza a quello della wilderness» realizzata nel 2015 nell'ambito delle iniziative EXPO del parco nazionale, poi divenuta allestimento permanente del Centro visita del parco di Intragna.

L’influenza esercitata dagli architetti italiani, o di origine italiana, a cavallo tra XIX e XX secolo, in corrispondenza di una duratura stabilità politica del paese e una conseguente prosperità economica, fu determinante per il rinnovamento architettonico dell’intera Argentina. Non solo gli architetti, ma più in generale tutti gli emigrati italiani attivi nel settore della progettazione, costruzione e compravendita immobiliare, ebbero un ruolo fondamentale nella definizione del nuovo assetto urbanistico e architettonico delle emergenti città argentine. Persino i materiali — in alcuni casi addirittura di importazione italiana, più comunemente a imitazione degli stessi — contribuiscono a caratterizzare in maniera inconfondibile l’architettura di quei decenni.

At the dawn of its history the humanity used
natural construction materials, namely timber,
natural stone, clay, straw, among which clay was
the most widespread and easy one to use.
Universally available and cheap, it was actively
used in construction not only in Central Asia, but
also around many countries all over the world.
Statistical data shows that about 30% of the
world’s population or around 1.5 million people
live in clay houses.

Around 20% of the above mentioned population
lives in cities and city suburbs. Central Asian rural
areas have over 50% of housing and facilities built of
natural clay. This is primarily caused by its
availability, economic efficiency and excellent
insulation qualities. First primitive rounded shape air
bricks were first applied in Central Asia ten
thousand years ago and are perpetually used since
then.

As a remarkable case of being modern monument of Bauhaus style and social functionalist housing, Siedlung Gropius Törten Estate of Dessau needs some reassessment in architectural material study as those are rare in todays practice. The research problem is, it is not rational to bring back the original materials again. To find out both modern facilities and original appearance in alternative choices, would be challenge as well. To introduce sustainable material practice for preset day composite conservation oriented practice accordingly, would be the research question of this study. And it should be done without any maltreatment to the originals. An investigative survey, literature review and collaboration with building and finishing material experts, were adopted as method. To cope with the specifics of Dessau, some potentials of localization and substitutions of contemporary installation were advocated after such meticulous observation. Tentative recommendations based on results, might demonstrate the possible links for further maintainable remodeling regarding the distinct architectural expression in alternative, possible preservation material practice. Such results of explicit survey will also reveal the various potentials in building and finishing material conservation technique in the future. The study will determine and establish that the Bauhaus aesthetics and its authentic value are dependent over all these materials.

Conservation of historical memory is usually neglected in current building renovation practice, which involves the remodelling of plasterwork, floors, window frames and finishings in general. However, it does constitute the key element of certain renovation projects that have kept visible the traces of previous lives, rejecting the idea that new finishings should cancel all traces of the past.
Terms such as "unfinished" and "imperfect" concur with an attitude of openness to the possibility that the renovated building could be subject to new modifications, with knowledge of its past conditions offering great opportunities for the relative design. Moreover, the display of the untreated materials and the procedures undertaken corresponds to a frank, sincere, and truthful way of operating that may indeed have an ethical impact.
England and the Switzerland are the countries where you can find most cases of this tendency of refusal to smooth aver and camouflage. In these contexts we see the greatest evidence of that influence exercised by the neo-brutalist architecture of half a century ago, and by the As found tendency which, together, have contributed to mark the end of orthodoxy in the Modern Movement.

Both historic and recent natural events continue to reveal weaknesses in the capacity and capability of buildings to respond and cope with natural events such as flooding. The subject of this paper is both topical and significant because the prevailing approach continues to overlook this fundamental factor for resilience, in favour of larger scale technocratic, infrastructure solutions. Recent examples have however shown that levees, dams and dikes do fail, so resilient buildings should be considered as part of a comprehensive climate change and environmental management strategy. Integrated design for resilience is a process that engages design, planning, engineering, social and political solutions to proactively deliver an effective and usable built environment. It offers a coherent framework for the collaborative and holistic design, delivery and management of building-level resilience at both the macro and micro scale. This paper presents the case study and evaluation, the multi-variant components and benefits thereof, of the integrated design approach for resilience. It concludes with a series of practical design recommendations for resilience and scope for further research.

La produzione della calce nel Golfo di Policastro è ancora testimonianza viva per la permanenza dei manufatti "le calcare" e la memoria della gente che ricorda la raccolta delle fascine, il lavoro di cottura e la convivialità intorno alla calcara. La ricerca e la sperimentazione di metodologie di recupero delle conoscenze e divulgazione delle stesse sono parte del lavoro che l'associazione AUSS da tempo porta avanti.

Une visite, effectuée en 1656 lors de l’achat du domaine de Meudon par Abel Servien aux héritiers de la Maison de Guise, permet de préciser la nature des travaux menés dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle, notamment ceux exécutés sur les dessins du Primatice. L’intervention de ce dernier ne se borna pas en effet à la seule grotte que Vasari mentionne, non sans exagération, et qui au demeurant n’a pas été achevée, mais elle porta aussi sur le château : création de galeries terrasses dans la cour, des décors de la galerie dans l’aile droite, de la grande salle et d’un petit studiolo peint sur le thème d’Aristote.

A quarry can be defined as a place from which stone, rock, construction aggregate, sand, gravel, or slate has been excavated from the ground (Wikipedia, 2017). Quarrying is the activity carried out at the quarry. Having learnt a lot about stone in class, it was only logical to grasp a practical knowledge of this material so we visited the nearest and available stone quarry.

Architecture is always built out of architecture, there is no tabula rasa. This essay is built like the architecture it examines. It consists of fragments, interpretations, and intentions. An interplay of analogies, references, and influences emerges among the pictorial examples, written quotations, and short commentaries that bind them together. The various levels intersect and overlap – sometimes in contrast, sometimes with empathy. The reader is called upon to put the fragments together for himself or herself.

Savona was not subjected to Genoa until 1528. But this independence was not reflected by a local building culture that, instead, can be compared to the buildings of the Antelami craftsmen active in Liguria since the middle of XII century. During the late Middle Age there were built several residential palaces and defensive/offensive structures. In most cases the towers were made with stones, but also in stone and bricks - the former at the base, the latter in the upper levels, as we can see in Noli or Albenga. Building materials came from nearby quarries or re-using pieces of ancient Roman buildings. Those re-used pieces were harmonized in the external walls depending on the different techniques and raw materials.

The Indian subcontinent is a land rich with biodiversity which is endangered, and faces a major threat from various sources
mainly from the ever-growing human population and global warming. Hence it is important to keep this in check and focus on
their conservation in a just manner, which could be done by creating a conservation centre in a national park which would
benefit the animals, the conservationists as well as the researchers.
This research papers is a study of the best possible methods for constructing a structure in a wildlife setting with affecting the
ecological balance of nature as less as possible. Such a requirement leads to the concept of “NON-INTRUSIVE ARCHITECTURE”
which is the architecture that functions without interfering with the surroundings by various means and methods. To name a
few: camouflaging paints and textures, natural materials, earth-berm architecture, underground architecture, net-zero
sustainable buildings, etc.

RESUMEN
Este trabajo presenta parte de los resultados de dos proyectos de investigación sobre la arquitectura de la Lusitania romana. El puente de Alcántara (Cáceres) ha sido objeto de un estudio que incluye la realización de nueva documentación gráfica y un análisis de las trasformaciones históricas y estructurales sufridas por el monumento. Diferentes evidencias apoyan la hipótesis de la existencia de un proyecto arquitectónico para un puente anterior que, probablemente, se empezó y no llegó a construirse en su totalidad.
Los restos de dos arcos externos y una bóveda de una estructura anterior al puente de época de Trajano indican la presencia de una construcción muy diferente respecto al monumento que conocemos en la actualidad. Este primer puente, fundamental para la explotación económica del territorio circundante ya en la temprana época altoimperial, pertenecería a un modelo arquitectónico poco adecuado para la topografía de esta zona del Tajo.

ABSTRACT
This paper presents part of the results in two research projects about the architecture of the Roman Lusitania. The bridge of Alcantara (Cáceres) has been object of an exhaustive study, which includes new graphic documentation and the analysis of historical and structural transformations of the monument. Different evidences support the hypothesis of an existing architectural project for an earlier bridge, which probably was never finished.
Two external arches and a vault of a structure underneath the Trajan bridge indicates the existence of a very different construction to the monument that can be seen nowadays. That first bridge, crucial for the economic exploitation of the surrounding areas since the early Roman period, might not have been an architectonical type suitable for the topography of the river Tajo area.

The following essay sketches varieties of imagination operative in the best architectural work. It was published in Warehouse Journal, a student-edited journal produced annually by the Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba. Student editors for Warehouse 25 were, Alena Rieger and Ally Pereira-Edwards.

A number of essays and interviews published between 1997 and 2008, revised for this edition, which V2_Publishing kindly made available as a complete pdf. The book contains a memorable introduction by the late Detlef Mertins, a number of early essays that were strongly influenced by Paul Virilio, and many discussions of architectural and art works combined with theoretical analyses.

In this paper we try to point out the meaning of four terms which belong to the '500 and '600's technical-building language in Genova: imboccare, indarbare, indarbusare and infrascare, disappeared in Italian. Each of these terms has a complicate relationship with the others depending on the contest, the kind of building, the part of the building in which it is used. We could collect information from different sources-this is the most interesting and the main quality of the research-such as literature, technical analysis on the original buildings and, most of all, from the Historical Archives of Genova.

Secara tradisional, sebagian besar proses konstruksi bangunan berlangsung di lokasi bangunan tersebut (meskipun beberapa bagian konstruksi tersebut berlangsung di tempat lain, misalnya bagian dari kayu tersebut yang berbentuk bingkai yang bercorak dan dibawa ke produksi material untuk proses berikutnya). Namun, pada proses bangunan tradisional ini melibatkan penggunaan komponen pabrik yang dihasilkan misalnya atap gulungan. Aplikasi dari bangunan ramah lingkungan biasanya disebut juga dengan konstruksi hijau (green construction), yakni pada tahap perencanaan terlihat pada beberapa desain konstruksi yang memperoleh award sebagai desain bangunan yang hemat energi, yaitu sistem bangunan yang didesain agar mengurangi pemakaian listrik untuk pencahayaan dan tata udara.

This report presents the findings
from a research study concern in using the stone
material as a main material of Amman city
building during past until present. What this paper
seeks to do is to study this fantastic material
which has improves its varied properties and it’s a
spatial character by considering it as the oldest
material used by man in construction and
building. Amman is famous for its extensive use
of building stone; refer to the geographic and
topographic nature as a city surrounded by seven
mountains. The research will start with a historical
overview from old ages until present and
examples will be mentioned for using it in several
civilizations which bass by Amman city.
Jordanians architects have a varied uses of stone
material and it was depending on the evolution of
architectural language and technical development,
each one of them has different concept and
different way, like Wadah Al-Abedi, Farouk
Yaghmour , Rasem badran and Imad Al-Dabbas.
The research came out with a sort of conclusion
points, which judge the local treatment for using
stone material on our Ammanis building.

decorazione esterna degli edifici piemontesi. Vengono considerati cioè

El presente trabajo analiza la ocupación humana en torno a los humedales de Valdivia, concentrándonos en los períodos alfareros prehispánicos e históricos hasta momentos finicoloniales. Se estudian, a partir de fuentes arqueológicas, documentales y carto-gráficas, las diversas estrategias y relaciones establecidas en estos paisajes del agua por poblaciones indígenas e hispanas, dando cuenta de la valoración ambivalente hacia los espacios de ciénagas y pantanos en la mentalidad hispana. Proponemos el inicio de un proceso de modificación sustantiva de la fisonomía urbana y zonas de humedales iniciada a fines del siglo XVIII por obras de infraestructura defensivas que definirán un momento inicial de transformación del paisaje, fortalecido durante el período Republicano.

This paper presents an archaeological and historical characterization of human settlements around the wetlands of the city of Valdivia. It especially focuses on pre-Hispanic and historic ceramic periods until the end of the Spanish Colonial period. The different strategies and relations developed in these water landscapes by indigenous and Hispanic populations are studied from archaeological, documentary, and cartographic sources of information, revealing an ambivalent valuation of wetlands by Spaniards. We propose a process of massive modification of the colonial urban and wetland areas beginning in the last decades of the eighteenth century, through the construction of defensive buildings and bordering walls. This defines an initial moment of transformation of the wetlands zones within and around the city of Valdivia, which will be strengthened throughout the Republican period.

ABSTRAK Iklim merupakan faktor alam yang sangat penting bagi eksistensi arsitektur bangunan di seluruh permukaan bumi ini. Karena iklim memiliki banyak unsur di dalamnya yang sangat berpengaruh bagi kehidupan, keberlangsungan hidup manusia sehari-hari serta bermanfaat bagi penerapannya terhadap arsitektur. Bangunan yang direncanakan harus memanfaatkan matahari dan iklim sebagai sumber energi primer dan dirancang untuk mengakomodasi perubahan perubahan sebagai konsekwensi siklus iklim secara harian, musiman maupun tahunan dan mengalami versi cuaca yang berbeda sesuai dengan keberadaannya pada suatu garis lintang geografis tertentu di permukaan bumi ini. Perbedaan iklim yang ada di belahan bumi ini ikut mempengaruhi perbedaan karakter / ciri khas dari arsitektur bangunan masing-masing wilayah yang dibagi atas empat (4) wilayah iklim. Sehingga mengakibatkan manusia merancang bangunannya sebagai tempat hunian, aktivitas / kerja dan lain-lain harus seiring bahkan memanfaatkan kondisi alam dan iklim agar memperoleh kenyamanan yang thermal. Iklim memiliki pengaruh yang cukup besar bagi bentuk arsitektur suatu bangunan. Bentuk bangunan di suatu wilayah tidak akan sama, sekalipun bangunan tersebut berada di dalam satu kawasan pembagian iklim. Namun, jika ditinjau secara klimatik bentuk arsitektur suatu bangunan akan sama prinsipnya untuk satu kawasan pembagian iklim. Hal ini diakibatkan karena bentuk bangunan yang seiring dengan kondisi alam, matahari, angin, cuaca bahkan iklim yang ada di wilayah tersebut. Iklim juga berpengaruh terhadap penggunaan bahan bangunan dan berpengaruh juga terhadap penggunaan teknologi pada suatu konstruksi bangunan. Oleh sebabnya itu, teknologi produksi dalam dunia konstruksi dan material sangat berkembang dengan pesat seiring dengan berkembangnya penggunaan bahan / material suatu bangunan.

Après avoir précisé le socle de connaissances sur lequel il s’appuie, Philippe Samyn vous invite à une promenade où les matériaux (transparents, diffusants ou réfléchissant / raides ou souples / étanches ou perméables) et les éléments de la construction (structure, enveloppe simple ou multiple, écran,…) dialoguent dans leur environnement avec l’ombre et la lumière, la transparence et le reflet.

Cette promenade illustrée par quelques-unes de ses réalisations aboutit au trait d’ombre, qui touche aux fondements de la manière de construire, étant intimement lié à deux concepts fondateurs de la forme architecturale : le « dessin » et le « joint ».
