Signs

Various signs in one place. The blue one stands for  a pedestrians street, the one below says "Cycling permitted when the shops are closed". And than there is the small white one says "No Parking".

The red one is a sign board of a  bicycle shop or parking, I am not sure about it.

Bicycle sign

A sign of a bicycle shop in Harderwijk.

And a view from the other side. The white sign at the right says "Cycling allowed when the shops are closed". A strange combination, you want to buy a bike and can't try it outside when the shop is open.

Artwork

This artwork in Harderwijk shows "Eibert den Herder" ( 1876-1950), a fisherman, entrepeneur, painter, politician and campaigner against the cut off of the Southern Sea, His fishmeal and canned fish factory was situated at this parkingplace. With the construction of the dam in the Southern Sea in 1932 it became the IJssellake. As den Herder had predicted the closure caused a severe blow to the fishery. The hat (of den Herder) symbolizes to shelter Harderwijk and the Southern Sea. It is a dutch expression with the use of the same word for hat and shelter, (hoed and behoeden}I can't translate in english.
The green marble slabs depict the former sea.

On the picture frame you can see some  references to Harderwijk as fishing- and tourist place.
The artwork is made by sculptor "Hans Mes".

Fence

Behind this gate used to house the Colonial Recruitment Depot. The city Harderwijk was from 1814 to 1919 the main recruitment depot for the East Indies Army, later the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. The depot was closed in 1909. This gate was offered in 1854 by the municipality of Harderwijk and some residents.

Walls

Harderwijk received city rights in 1231 fromm Count Otto II of Guelders. A defensive wall surrounding the city was completed by the end of that century.

Particularly along the west side of the town much of the wall still exists, although often not in entirely original form.

This also goes for the only remaining city gate the "Vischpoort".

Another small gate to reach the city.

Sculptures

At the new waterfront in Harderwijk a beautiful piece of art was realized by dutch artist "Marte Roling". It is called the "Hanseatic seamark" and is a little boat on the waves. Harderwijk was a member of the "Hanseatic League" so it is very appropriate.

It is placed on a huge pole and is a real seamark.

A little further on another sculpture was placed in the water, a crashing plane.

It is a remembrance to WWII when between 1941 and 1945 117 crew members of the allied  airforces lost their lives close to Harderwijk into the IJssel lake.

A new beach

Last weekend we visited the little city of Harderwijk a historic place situated at the IJssel lake. The former fishing harbour had undergone a renovation and a beach was created along the waterfront.

The sand looked brand new with nice paterns.

The weather was sunny but still a bit chilly but these girls didn't mind.

Boys don't have the patience to sit still and enjoyed themselves with stones throwing up the water.

And the little ones always take the hard way.
