The Hyrule Compendium is a Sheikah Slate and Purah Pad function in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Location and Uses

Breath of the Wild

When Link obtains the Sheikah Slate, some of its data, including the Hyrule Compendium, is damaged.[3][4] Purah is able to restore the Hyrule Compendium and other functions,[5] but only once the furnace outside the lab has been lit with the Blue Flame from the Ancient Furnace.[6] After this has been completed, Purah will remove the lock on the Guidance Stone and allow Link to use it.[7] The Guidance Stone takes note of the Sheikah Slate's missing files and initiates a repair.[8] This restores the Slate.[9]

The Hyrule Compendium compiles pictures and information of every Creature, Enemy, Material, Weapon, Shield, Bow, and treasure.[10] In order to register an entry, Link must take a picture of the subject with the Camera Rune. Alternatively, once the "Sunshroom Sensing" Side Quest is completed, Link can purchase any missing picture from Symin for 100 Rupees each. He sells Fauna Picture,[11] Enemy Pictures,[12] Material Pictures,[13] Weapon Pictures,[14] and Other Pictures.[15] Once Calamity Ganon is defeated, Elite Enemy Pictures can be bought for 500 Rupees each.[16] Entries saved in the Hyrule Compendium can be detected using the Sheikah Sensor +.[17]

Once Link completes the Hyrule Compendium, he can obtain the Classified Envelope from Symin.[18] Creatures and equipment exclusive to amiibo are not included in the Hyrule Compendium. Equipment and Enemies exclusive to the Expansion Pass DLC are included in the Hyrule Compendium, but some are only available in Master Mode. Due to these extra equipment and Enemies entries, some entries may have altered number listings from the base game dependent upon whether or not the Expansion Pass DLC has been purchased and these numbers could be further different depending upon whether or not the game is being played in Master Mode.

Trivia

  • In Breath of the Wild, the Sunshroom entry is the only one in the Compendium that cannot be obtained by purchasing it from Symin, due to the "Sunshroom Sensing" Side Quest, which automatically registers the Sunshroom to the Compendium, being required to be able to purchase entries in the first place. A default image for the Sunshroom still exists in the game's files, however.
  • The storage location in Breath of the Wild's data for Compendium images taken using the Camera Rune is the same for both Normal Mode and Master Mode. As a result, images taken in one mode get overwritten when an image of that same entry is taken in the other mode. Images purchased from Symin, however, do not get overwritten by this, as they are stored in a different location.
  • In Tears of the Kingdom, the Hyrule Compendium is actually classified as a Key Item internally, under the name Obj_PictureBook. However, a special parameter ensures the prompt does not appear when it is unlocked, and it does not normally appear in the Inventory.
