Locations and Uses
Breath of the Wild
Fauna Pictures are a type of Hyrule Compendium Picture sold by Symin in the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab.[3] They are Pictures of Creatures that have been left on the Lab's Guidance Stone, thereby allowing Link to unlock their Hyrule Compendium entries.[1][4] A single Fauna Picture costs 100 Rupees.[5]
Symin's stock of Fauna Pictures will match how many Creature entries are missing from Link's Hyrule Compendium, though there are 83 in total. When Link purchases Fauna Pictures, the Hyrule Compendium will be updated with a corresponding amount of entries.[6] Link can overwrite the default Fauna Pictures by taking new Pictures of their subject, but he is unable to restore them.[7]

As I was conducting my research, I found that there were still some pictures of the past left on the Guidance Stone! If you add those pictures to your Hyrule Compendium, you can search for their subjects with the Sheikah Sensor +.

It seems the Hyrule Compendium recovered a picture from the past! It appears the picture from the Guidance Stone was transferred to your Hyrule Compendium. You can't restore transferred pictures, so be careful of overwriting it.
