Hyrule Compendium Entry
139  (144Master Mode) Stone Talus (Rare)
Description
This enormous monster is naturally camouflaged as a rock formation. Neither sword nor arrow can pierce its stony form, but a cunning adventurer knows to scale its body and attack the ore sprouting from its peak. Unlike your average Stone Talus, this type's ore deposit contains a large amount of precious ore.
Common Locations
Hyrule Field
Tabantha Frontier
Recoverable Materials
Flint Amber Opal Topaz Ruby Sapphire Diamond

Stone Taluses (Rare) are a variation of Stone Taluses found primarily around Hyrule Field and the Tabantha Frontier. The main difference between them is the Ore Deposit on their body, which has been replaced by a Rare Ore Deposit. As a result of this, they tend to drop rarer loot than other Taluses.[4] Stone Taluses (Rare) disguise themselves as natural rock formations, but if Link approaches them, they will begin to move and attack him.[4] The only way to damage them is to attack the Rare Ore Deposit on their body, which are particularly vulnerable to Iron Sledgehammers, as well as other mining tools and Bomb Arrows.[4]

After defeating Calamity Ganon, Link is able to ask Kilton about Stone Taluses.[5] When he does so, Kilton reveals that he has been unable to approach them due to the giant size, so he requests that Link kill every Stone Talus in Hyrule Kingdom and allow him to analyze the scents they leave behind.[6] This figure includes every Stone Talus (Rare) as well. Should Link accomplish this task, Kilton will reward him with the Medal of Honor: Talus.[7] Kilton's research allows him to learn more about the diet and musculoskeletal structures of Stone Taluses.[8]

  5. [About monsters...] Dya DYAAAAAAAH! You want to know about monsters? I just LOOOOOVE talking about monsters! Ooh. OOOOOOOH! Let's talk about the huge ones! The stone colossus? The forest giant? The giant sand beast?! Which monster do you want to hear about? — Kilton (Breath of the Wild)
  6. I'm currently after them myself, but they're just so big! I can't even get near them... So could I ask you to find them and, uh, harvest their materials? I'm talking all of them. That way, I'll be able to analyze the scent of their fluids that will inevitably stick to your body during battle. That will allow me to determine their habits, behaviors, and overall qualities. I'm counting on you... — Kilton (Breath of the Wild)
  7. You—! You've defeated every last Stone Talus! Oh, you are FRAGRANT, my friend. It smells like there's a Stone Talus standing right in front of me! Tha-thank you so much! Oh, yes! Here, let me give you this. — Kilton (Breath of the Wild)
  8. Thanks to you, I now know their musculoskeletal structure...as well as their general diet. — Kilton (Breath of the Wild)
