Link's Grandma presenting him with the family Shield from The Wind Waker
The Hero's Shield is the basic Shield received at the beginning of The Wind Waker. It bears a resemblance to the Small Shield once used by the Link in The Minish Cap. The Shield is sturdy and provides adequate protection against most attacks, although its flimsy appearance is mocked by Tetra.[citation needed] Despite this, the Hero's Shield will not burn upon contact with fire like most wooden Shields.
The Hero's Shield is an heirloom belonging to Link's family.[4] It is said that the family Shield was the legendary Shield used by the Hero himself.[5] The Hero's Shield is given to Link by his Grandma before he leaves Outset Island to save his sister, Aryll. It is with sadness that Link's Grandma gives him the Hero's Shield, as it symbolizes his departure from the Island to face great danger. Link uses the Shield throughout a large portion of the game before obtaining the Mirror Shield in the Earth Temple, after which the Hero's Shield disappears from Link's Items Screen.
The Hero's Shield is predominantly brown. The design of the Triforce is present in the very center of the Shield. There are long swirls surrounding it as well as three bolts at its corners. A winged creature with horns replaces the typical bird motif.

The Hero's Shield from the Era of the Great Sea appears in Breath of the Wild. It is obtained randomly when 30th Anniversary series The Wind Waker-themed Princess Zelda amiibo is used is scanned using the amiiboRune. Multiple can be obtained through repeatedly scanning the Rune. It is said this Shield was the favorite of a hero who travelled the open seas.[3] This Shield was apparently a family heirloom, passed down through generations.[3]
Being made of metal, the Hero's Shield will conduct Electricity and attract Lightning if it is equipped during a Thunderstorm. It will also sink if it is dropped in Water. However, it can be picked up with the Magnesis Rune, and it will not burn like wooden Shields do when exposed to Fire or a Scorching Climate.
