History of Greece

Some months after the success of the 1930 international parapsychology conference that was organized in Athens by Angelos Tanagras, a 25 yr. old young lady by the name Koula Ghioka contacted Tanagras claiming telekinetic abilities. From that moment on and for 17 years Miss Ghioka was the star telekinetic medium of the Hellenic Society for Psychophysiology. Most importantly, her telekinetic demonstrations were, in Tanagras’ view, confirming his theory of Psychobolia. In her collaboration with the Society of Psychophysiology she adopted the pseudonym “Cleio Georgiou” to protect her family’s anonymity.
The current study will exactly attempt to closer examine Cleio’s telekinetic performance.

In March 1933, the Librarian and Editor of the Society for Psychical Research (SPR), Theodore Besterman, received a letter from his Greek colleague Dr. Angelos Tanagras, requesting the participation of the SPR in an experiment he was preparing to test the survival of the soul beyond death. Tanagras posted the details of the experiment in a sealed envelope addressed to the Hon. Treasurer and Joint Hon. Secretary of the SPR, W. H. Salter, an acquaintance of his from the 1930 Athens Parapsychology Conference. He had included specific instructions for when to open his sealed package after his death.
Yet, the package remained locked up at the SPR for 36 years after the death of Tanagras, and 71 years after its submission, awaiting a signal from Greece. In April 2007, SPR officers opened the envelope containing the survival experiment of Tanagras to deposit its content at the Cambridge University library archives. This article revisits the survival experiment of Tanagras to evaluate whether it had achieved its mission.

This is the main part of my work. It is the highlight of my studies. I explained how the upper structure of Roman society, the Church, survived and made deal with barbarians, how all old science and culture went down and under a new order. Well, absolutely amazing time. There are that Catalaunian Fields and it is the highlight of the highlights. I, as a specialist in nets and military arts, write the consequences of that great battle, in every aspect. I put to cover some heraldic point of view, and it is quite telling: when one of the ladies of my neighbors saw the cover she said: "Bellicose picture, I am sure my son shall love this book."

RESUMEN En este estudio se exponen algunos hechos y circunstancias que relacionan la política de Pericles con algunos aspectos de la tragedia Antígona de Sófocles. Algunos pasajes de Plutarco y dos testimonios sobre Sófocles fundamentan la hipótesis expuesta. Los ostracismos de Cimón y de Tucídides de Alopeces, el desvío de los tributos de la Alianza ático-délica desti-nados a la diosa Atenea y las magistraturas desempeñadas por Sófocles permitirían establecer unas conexiones entre el ejercicio del poder del mítico Creonte y del histórico Pericles. ABSTRACT «The play Antigone and its circumstances». Some facts and circumstances of the Pericles's politics in relation with certain aspects of the tragedy Antigone by Sophocles are shown in this paper. Several passages from Plutarch and two pieces of evidence concerning Sophocles support that hypothesis. The ostracisms of Cymon and of Thucydides of Alopece, the misuse of the Alliance's taxes for the goddess Athenea and the magistracies held by Sophocles would suggest that there were certain connections between the exercise of authority carried out by the mythic Creon and by the historical Pericles. El objetivo de este estudio es exponer algunos hechos y circunstancias anterio-res a la composición de la Antígona de Sófocles que pudieran explicar las razones que movieron al autor a representar en el año 442 a.C., ni antes ni después, el doble argumento de esta obra: por un lado, el de Antígona, quien defiende sus cre-encias religiosas y el deber de cumplir los ritos funerarios con el cadáver de su her-mano Polinices; esta actitud la conducirá a quebrantar un decreto, a ser condena-da a muerte y a suicidarse; por otro lado, el de Creonte, quien accede legítima-mente al cargo de rey, pero ante la desobediencia del decreto proclamado y el temor de perder su autoridad, actúa impía y tiránicamente al aplicar ese decreto de forma rigurosa y precipitada; de esta actitud se arrepentirá demasiado tarde porque algunas evidencias lo persuadirán de sus errores, sentirá miedo de los dioses, revo-cará el decreto, ordenará sepultar a Polinices y sacar a Antígona de la cueva donde había sido encerrada. La tragedia, sin embargo, se habrá consumado con tres sui-cidios humanamente evitables: los de Antígona, Hemón y Eurídice.

This article aims to cast more light on the relatively under-researched subject of warfare in late Byzantine and Frankish Greece by analysing the descriptions of military operations between the Byzantine Empire and the Crusader Principality of Achaia in Morea (the Peloponnese) in 1264, especially the battle of Makry-Plagi. Moreover, it will demonstrate that, although relations between the Latins, Byzantines, and even the Turks were generally hostile at this time,  these groups could co-operate to a surprising extent, and even showed a readiness for peaceful co-existence.

Czech-Greek relations in the period of the Middle Ages (until 1453 – when the Ottoman Turks took over Constantinople) have taken the forms of political, ecclesiastical, and cultural contacts between the Czech lands and the ethnically and politically “Greek” core of the Byzantine Empire; the later, with the ethnically “Greek” parts of the Ottoman Empire. Since the 19th century; to wit, after the genesis of the modern, independent Greek state (Kingdom of Greece, 1830–1832), Czech-Greek contacts gradually transformed into relations between two modern nations – Czechs and Greeks. In the years 1918–1992 (with an interruption between 1939‒1945) they developed within the broader framework of international Czechoslovak-Greek relations. Since 1993 they play out as relations between the independent Czech Republic and the Hellenic Republic.

Ο Νίκος Πλουμπίδης εξελίχθηκε σε σημαντικό αγωνιστή της Αριστεράς στην ταραγμένη δεκαετία του 1940. Τα βασικά μοτίβα της σκέψης και της δράσης του όμως διαμορφώθηκαν κατά τη δεκαετία του 1930, όταν συμμετείχε αρχικά στα συνδικαλιστικά των δασκάλων και κατόπιν στις κινητοποιήσεις των δημοσίων υπαλλήλων και των εργατών. Διαμορφώθηκαν, δηλαδή, ενόσω τα σύννεφα της οικονομικής κρίσης του ’29 πύκνωναν πάνω από τη χώρα μας, η κοινωνική διαμαρτυρία διαρκώς διογκωνόταν και οι κυβερνήσεις προσέφευγαν ολοένα και συχνότερα στην καταστολή. Ο Νίκος Πλουμπίδης -υποστηρίζεται στο κείμενο- ήταν γέννημα μιας εποχής που εγκυμονούσε, μα κανείς δεν ήξερε με σιγουριά αν θα γεννούσε την επανάσταση ή το μωρό της Ρόζμαρι.

Serbian‐Albanian relations in the period between the Austro‐Hungarian
announcement of the war and the temporary collapse of Serbia in late 1915 ‐ were conditioned by Serbia's political interests, the unresolved issue of definitive demarcation, and the existence of a strong anti‐Serb coalition in Albania. The increasingly frequent incursions of the Arnaut rebels into Serbian territory triggered a major military campaign with the goal of deeply penetrating into Albanian territory, the deployment of military troops the subsequent campaign, the main burden of the battle fell on the units of the Ohrid Detachment, which contained two cadres regiments and one battalion that was in reserve. The Serbian military intervention in Albania, with less misunderstanding with the Greeks, had insignificant losses (120 dead, wounded, and missing) and lasted a total of ten days. Serbia was harshly criticized by the Allied powers, especially Italy, Great Britain, and Russia. The Russian supreme command even threatened to halt any further military assistance to Serbia. This action succeeded in breaking Arnaut's uprising, strategically providing the Serbian background against the German‐Austro‐Hungarian‐Bulgarian offensive, and for some time securing the positions of the Serbian ‐ally of the Esad‐pasha, which by August completely suppressed the uprising
and eliminated its culprits. Serbia attacked deeply into the Albanian territory in this operation, and also achieved strategic superiority. Only a month later, the Serbian Army's main element retreated in front of the superior enemy through the Albanian territory and many liberated areas. With the withdrawal of the Serbian Army towards the Albanian coast, the provisional Albanian troops were gradually dispersed, when most of the personnel from the cadre regiments joined their divisions.

Juliusz Słowacki i Dionizjos Solomos znaleźli się 8 września, 1836 r., na tym samym statku parowym „Eptanisos”, w  drodze na Zakintos. Istnieje też możliwość że Słowacki spotkał się z Solomosem wcześniej na Kerkyrze. To spotkanie z  greckim poetą uwiecznił Słowacki w III i IV pieśni, jego dużego formatu poemacie  „Podróż do Ziemi Świętej z Neapolu”[1], który to utwór jest jedynym źródłem informacji o tej podróży Solomosa. Tekst poematu Słowackiego potwierdza sławę, jaką cieszył się w tamtym czasie Solomos, pomimo  że grecki poeta jawi się w nim jako ekscentryk.

The Albanians recognized history, especially the time of the Albanian Pashaliks, time when the name of Albania reemerged in the European scene, as a territory and as an ethnicity for the Albanians living in them, is subject of study not only for the historiography, political and cultural European thought, but also of the historiography and political thinking of the neighboring states that had just established their own nations. Of course, the reason why these studies were carried out or even the resulting conclusions, do not completely coincide or more than often one surpasses the other. On one hand, there were the Europeans rediscovering the Balkans who they felt an exotic attraction with, by using the rich history of the region they sought to revive the ideals of their ancient world at any cost, and on the other hand, the Balkans ethnicities that were becoming nations while eager to expand into large territories, created distorted images of their neighbors around the lands where they appeared. Among this hesitation and contrast also became apparent the description of the Albanian territories and Pashalik of Janina, Berat and Shkodra, the three state-forming ethnicity, where the majority of the population from the late 18th century to the early 19th century was Albanian.

This was the last part. The new brave world begins. I studied social, economic and military things, and put all together. That´s it. When the laws of nature vanish, chaos welcomes its great storms. Huns find their way via the Silk Roads to Europe and Medieval Age begins at the same moment. And the golden age of the Church and chivalry stopped when that road to Europe was shut down by new states like Russia. And then vanish the prophecies of Revelation book from the desks of kings and popes.

In four campaigns (1684-1687), Captain General Francesco Morosini had reconquered the Morea (the Peloponnese) from the Ottomans, but how could this  prize  be  preserved against the Porte’s future potential  invasions? A talented  young Dalmatian soldier, Antonio Jansic, participated in the gruesome conflict where he was introduced to the art of siege warfare, literally in the heat of battle. He became a military engineer, as Filippo Besset di Verneda’s protégé. By the early 1700s, Jansic was in charge of all the Venetian fortifications in the Levant. The huge Medieval fortress of Modon, key to the entire south-eastern Peloponnese, would have to  undergo massive and costly upgrades adapted to the  new  tactics. While Jansic fashioned innovative designs, administrative delays and the lack of funds jeopardized the completion of the works. The irresistible Ottoman campaign of 1715 saw Jansic and Vincenzo Pasta side  by side attempting the impossible: Defend Modon while all the other fortresses of the Regno di Morea and their garrisons had failed miserably...

Στα 1836 - 1838 ο Γιούλιους Σλοβάτσκι, εθνικός ποιητής της Πολωνίας,  πραγματοποίησε ένα ταξίδι στην Ιταλία, Ελλάδα, Αίγυπτο και Παλαιστίνη, και το περιέγραψε στο αφηγηματικό επικό ποίημα του Ταξίδι στους Αγίους Τόπους από τη Νάπολη . Κατά το ταξίδι αυτό ο Γιούλιους Σλοβάτσκι και ο Διονύσιος Σολωμός βρεθήκαν στις 8 του Σεπτεμβρίου 1836 στο  ίδιο ατμόπλοιο το «Επτάνησος», στο δρόμο  για τη Ζάκυνθο. Υπάρχει επίσης η πιθανότητα ότι οι δυο συναντήθηκαν προηγουμένως στην Κέρκυρα. Tην συνάντηση αυτή, του Σλοβάτσκι με τον Έλληνα ποιητή, την απαθανάτισε ο Πολωνός ποιητής στο τρίτο και τέταρτο άσμα, στο  μακροσκελές ποιητικό έργο του,  Ταξίδι στους Αγίους Τόπους από τη Νάπολη, το οποίο είναι και η μόνη πηγή πληροφοριών για αυτό το ταξίδι του Σολωμού. Στο κείμενο του, ο Σλοβάτσκι επιβεβαιώνει την παγκόσμια φήμη που απολάμβανε ο Σολωμός, παρόλα  που ο Έλληνας ποιητής εμφανίζεται ως εκκεντρικός σε αυτό το έργο.

Thermopylae, situated in Greece, was a special place created by Nature, which played an important and incomparable role in the times of the history of the antique wars. The place formed a specifc ‘eye of the needle’ which impeded all types of invaders to get into the Middle and Southern Greece, that is to the most politically and economically important centres. It was determined by its land formation of a narrow passage between the steep Kallidromos mountains and the seaside or, more accurately the Malian Gulf. The geomorphological studies of Greek scientists made this situation even more precise by proving that next to the steep mountains there was an extensive swamp, made by warm sulphur springs beating above. It was this swamp, therefore, that made the passage through Thermopylae even narrower, approximately about several dozen metres wide (Fig. 2). This place is the result of the reconstruction as the current situation (Fig. 1) does not resemble of the landform of the antique times. The fundamental change was caused by the accumulative activity of the nearby Spercheios river ‘pushing aside’ the bank of the Gulf by a few metres as well as by the change of the previous swamp into the travertine rock present today.

The authors of the paper analyse three big military conflicts in Thermopylae, which took place in the three memorable years that is: 480, 279 and 191 BC. The selection criterion was the epoch when they happened, that is the antique, as well as the active background of the nature of the location, which remained unchanged in the discussed times. In addition, all three described conflicts, strictly connected with the geomorphological determinants of Thermopylae, found their course with far-reaching similarities. The first part discusses the Xerxes’ army invasion of Greece in 480 BC and the heroism of the 300 led by Leonidas. As is widely known, this battle has already been properly recognized in the literature on the subject. The original contribution of the authors is taking into consideration the newly discovered geomorphological determinants of Thermopylae, mentioned above. This applies to a significant degree the other two conflicts discussed in the article, newly interpreted by the authors, that is the invasion of Brennus with the Celtic hordes intending to settle in the Hellas (279 BC) and unfortunate battles of Antiochus III with the Romans in 191 BC.

O artigo analisa o olhar pós-moderno e foucaultiano do campo teórico e das metodologias de algumas obras da Historiografia Construcionista que se ocupou com o estudo da erótica grega a partir da década de 1980, tentando revelar seus vínculos com a Nova História Cultural.

Después de Waterloo y antes de 1848, varios territorios imperiales en América y Europa se escindieron y consiguieron su independencia a través de las armas. Estas nuevas «naciones», a pesar de la distancia, comparten varias características difíciles de pasar por alto, pero que han sido ignoradas o poco discutidas por los historiadores. Este desconocimiento es particularmente evidente en los trabajos de carácter general, como compilaciones y manuales que tratan este tema. Pareciera que, al momento de escribir y hacer la historia de la guerra y la historia global de las revoluciones y la conformación de las naciones durante el siglo XIX, hay una desconexión y un vacío en el que América Latina y los Balcanes quedan fuera de la discusión o son vistos como procesos aparte. Tomando como ejemplos las muy similares experiencias de Grecia y Colombia, esta presentación tratará de tender puentes referentes a la historiografía militar sobre el periodo.

Italy had imperial ambitions which increased under Mussolini's regime. Italy had a presence mainly in the Mediterranean region and Ethiopia, and from the mid-1930s, in Eritrea as well. Under the cover of war, Mussolini attempted to extend the areas under Italian rule to parts of south-east and east France.  In 1941 the northern part of the Dalmatian coast (with three provinces: Zadar, Split, Kotor) was annexed.  During the war, Jews in Libya suffered more than other Jewish communities in the Mediterranean region and in the Middle East. This was a result both of the ongoing war and of the anti-Semitic policies of the Italian government. These policies increased as a result of developments that took place during the war and reached new heights with the deportation of the Jews of Cyrenaica to the Giado camp, to detention camps in Europe and in Tunisia.

Recent years have seen several new directions of research. Various kinds of archival material have become accessible and scholars now have new material at their disposal. In addition, scholars have begun to explore various aspects of the lives of Jews in the Italian Mediterranean region and east Africa, and of the Jews' fate under the Italian Fascist regime.


The Documentation Center for North African Jewry during WWII at the Ben-Zvi Institute and the Fondazione Centro di Documentazione Ebraica Contemporanea (CDEC) will hold a workshop that  will discuss new trends in the research of Italy and Italian Jews in colonial territories during World War II : Libya, Dodecanese and East Africa.

The following issues will be addressed:
• New aspects of the research on Italy during WWII in the Mediterranean.
• Italian society in the countries under Italian occupation.
• Local populations and their relations with the Italians during the war.
• Italy's anti-Semitic policies from the mid-1930 are until the end of the war.
• Historical memory of the war.
• Libya's Jews during the war.
• The Giado camp – structure, organization and the Jews in the camp.
• The Jews of Tripoli and the Jews of Benghazi – comparisons and contrasts.
• The Italian occupation of Libya and its consequences.
• The British occupation of Libya and its consequences.
• Dodecanese Jews during the war.
• East African Jews during the war.

In 1871/1872, the Austro-Hungarian corvette "Fasana" undertook a voyage on a mission to East Asia. On board was the naval officer Maximilian Rottauscher, who wrote a private diary during the voyage, which is now in a private collection in Vienna. Of interest to photography historians is the entry from 16 March 1872, when the ship, already on its way back to the Adriatic, made a brief port call in the bay of Navarin in the western Peloponnese.

Το 2022 συμπληρώνονται 150 έτη από το θάνατο του συνθέτη και παιδαγωγού Νικόλαου Χαλικιόπουλου Μάντζαρου (1795-1872), ενός προσώπου που μέσω των δραστηριοτήτων του επηρέασε, άμεσα και έμμεσα, τη μουσική δημιουργία και κατάρτιση του Νεώτερου Ελληνισμού. Πράγματι, στον Μάντζαρο οφείλεται αφενός η δημιουργία του πλέον συγκροτημένου έως τότε σώματος μουσικών συνθέσεων από νεοέλληνα μουσουργό, και αφετέρου η συστηματική κατάρτιση μουσικοδιδασκάλων και συνθετών, πολλοί από τους οποίους όρισαν τη μουσική της Ελλάδας κατά τον 19ο αιώνα. Προνομιακός χώρος διεύρυνσης της εκπαιδευτικής δράσης του Μάντζαρου υπήρξε η Φιλαρμονική Εταιρεία Κερκύρας, της οποίας ο συνθέτης χρημάτισε Καλλιτεχνικός Διευθυντής από το 1841 έως τον θάνατό του. Από τη συγκεκριμένη θέση ο Μάντζαρος δεν καθόρισε μόνο την εκπαιδευτική κατεύθυνση του ιδρύματος, αλλά επιπλέον δημιούργησε και οργανωμένη τάξη μουσικής σύνθεσης. Οι παραπάνω δράσεις επιβεβαίωσαν τη σημασία τής, ενεργής ή/και βιωματικής, μουσικής εμπειρίας ως διαταξικού κοινωνικού αγαθού στη νεοελληνική πραγματικότητα και προσέφεραν μια πρωτόγνωρη για την νεώτερη Ελλάδα δημιουργική και εκπαιδευτική δυναμική που έδρασε διαμορφωτικά κατά τις επόμενες δεκαετίες και εκτός Επτανήσων.
Το 2022, όμως, συμπίπτει και με τις ανατροπές που έφερε στη μουσική δημιουργία και πράξη η πανδημία COVID-19, καθώς και με τους προβληματισμούς που ολοένα τίθενται και θα τίθενται σε σχέση με τη μουσική στη χώρα μας κατά τη μετά-COVID περίοδο. Αν μη τι άλλο, οι συμβατικοί τρόποι μουσικής επιτέλεσης δοκιμάζονται, ο επαναπροσδιορισμός του πλαισίου της μουσικής κατάρτισης φαίνεται όσο ποτέ επιβεβλημένος, ενώ νέοι τρόποι ενασχόλησης με τη μουσική δημιουργία και πράξη ήρθαν είτε να υποκαταστήσουν είτε να αντικαταστήσουν τους ήδη δοκιμασμένους.
Με την πεποίθηση ότι η γνώση του παρελθόντος δύναται να συνεισφέρει καίρια στην οικοδόμηση του μέλλοντος, και με αφορμή τα 150 έτη από το θάνατο του Νικόλαου Μάντζαρου, το Εργαστήριο Ελληνικής Μουσικής του Τμήματος Μουσικών Σπουδών του Ιονίου Πανεπιστημίου και η Φιλαρμονική Εταιρεία Κερκύρας συνδιοργανώνουν στην Κέρκυρα συνέδριο με τίτλο «Μουσική Δημιουργία και Πράξη στη Νεώτερη Ελλάδα» από 8 έως και 10 Απριλίου 2022. Οι επιμέρους θεματικές του συνεδρίου συμβατικά λαμβάνουν ως βάση τον όψιμο 19ο αιώνα, αφού χρονικά δύνανται να επεκταθούν και πριν από αυτόν, φιλοδοξώντας ωστόσο να συμβάλλουν ιδιαιτέρως στην παρουσίαση πτυχών της έντεχνης μουσικής δραστηριότητας του Ελληνισμού στο πέρασμα των παραπάνω 150 ετών. Παραλλήλως στις θεματικές του περιλαμβάνεται και η εξέταση της μουσικής επιτέλεσης σε όλες της μορφές της στην Ελλάδα της μετά-COVID εποχής και στις προοπτικές της εντός ενός παγκοσμίως αναδιαμορφούμενου μουσικού τοπίου.
Με αυτά κατά νου μερικές προτεινόμενες, και σε καμία περίπτωση δεσμευτικές, θεματικές του συνεδρίου είναι ενδεικτικά οι εξής:

Η επίσημη γλώσσα του συνεδρίου είναι η ελληνική.
Οι ενδιαφερόμενοι για συμμετοχή στο συνέδριο καλούνται να υποβάλουν σχετικές προτάσεις για εικοσάλεπτες ανακοινώσεις (Περίληψη 250 λέξεων και Βιογραφικό 100 λέξεων). Επίσης, υπάρχει η δυνατότητα υποβολής προτάσεων για θεματικές στρογγυλές τράπεζες των εξήντα λεπτών έκαστη (Περίληψη 450 λέξεων και Βιογραφικά 100 λέξεων).

Η επιλογή των προτάσεων και η ανακοίνωση του προγράμματος θα έχουν πραγματοποιηθεί έως την 15 Ιανουαρίου 2022, οπότε και θα ανακοινωθεί και το τελικό πρόγραμμα.
