Portuguese Linguistics

Saramaccan, an Atlantic creole whose lexifier languages are Portuguese and English, has a "split" prosodic system wherein the majority of its words are marked for pitch accent but an important minority are marked for tone. Split prosody is typologically unusual and runs counter to McWhorter's (2001a) idea that creole languages should have "simpler" grammars than non-creole languages. However, this complication of Saramaccan grammar does appear to be broadly consistent with the more general claim of McWhorter (1998) that creoles form an identifiable class of languages on typological, in addition to sociohistorical, grounds.

This paper attempts to consider and analyse the hierarchical structure (Greenberg 1971) of the Mode and Tense relations in the portuguese verbal system. Applying the Structural-Functional theoretical approach, we consider three types of Tense subcategories (Perspective, Plan and Tense) according to the complex temporal portuguese system and the Coseriu's theory (1976) regarding the Romance verbal system. The basic issue consists of the extensive semantic value of the Indicative Mode, which allows the complexity of Tense subcategories and grammatical morphemes, relaying on this basic modal value (non-subjective subsystem). In contrast and comparison, the intensive semantic value of the Subjunctive Mode suposes a reduction of the Tense subcategories and grammatical morphemes based on this basic modal value (subjective subsystem).

Portuguese is typically not considered a differential object marking (DOM) language, while Spanish, with its accusative a, is one of the most well-known DOM languages. This chapter uses quantitative multivariate analysis to argue that Portuguese -both Brazilian (BP) and European (EP) -displays a clear-cut DOM system. Unlike Spanish, however, the Portuguese DOM system is limited to strictly anaphoric direct object referents. Both BP and EP oppose null objects with overt pronominal marking of anaphoric DOs, even though the pronouns employed differ in each variety. In both Spanish and Portuguese, animacy, definiteness and specificity constrain the encoding of direct object referents in similar ways; most notably, the hierarchical ordering of these constraints is the same across the two languages.

Em 1955, Erving Goffman apresentou um estudo pioneiro sobre as características das interacções sociais dos indivíduos, que intitulou On Face-Works: An analysis of ritual elements in social interaction. Goffman explicita aí a necessidade de se analisarem, com rigor, as relações sociais que se estabelecem entre os indivíduos, quer nos encontros imediatos quer nas comunicações indirectas, pois «every person lives in a world of social encounters, involving him either in face-to-face or mediated contact with other participants» (Goffman 1982: 5). Em cada um desses contactos, o locutor procura causar uma imagem positiva no seu interlocutor, de modo a ser aprovado por ele. Quanto mais positiva for essa imagem, mais os outros a aceitarão. Goffman denominou esta teoria de «face-work», em que the term face may be defined as the positive social value a person effectively claims for himself by the line others assume he has taken during a particular contact. Face is as image of self delineated in terms of approved social attributes -albeit an image that others may share, as when a person makes a good showing for his profession or religion by making a good showing for himself. "On the southern tip of the Saurashtra peninsula of Gujarat (India) and commanding a strategic lookout over the Arabian sea, the small island of Diu has aroused seemingly disproportionate colonial interests throughout its history. Among the various effects of its long domination by faraway Portugal (1535-1961) was the formation of a local variety of Indo-Portuguese, a contact language resulting from the encounter of various linguistic influences, chief among which Gujarati and Portuguese. Although the Portuguese-lexified creoles of Asia have deserved scholarly attention from the late 19th-century, the trend towards accurate linguistic description of these languages is a recent one.

This study provides a linguistic account of present-day Diu Indo-Portuguese, duly embedded in its reconstructed historical and sociodemographic context, with the intention to contribute to our burgeoning understanding of the formation, development and present vitality of the contact languages of (South) Asia and elsewhere."

This paper provides more precise guidance and instruction with regard to the palaeographic method in translating manuscript MS408 (Ischia, Voynich). Manuscripts of antiquity typically require palaeographic interpretive techniques for the purpose of translation, because they include idiomatic abbreviations, unusual calligraphy, exotic language, unique letter symbols and so on, making them a challenge to read. Therefore, it is necessary to learn and understand the associated peculiarities of the MS408 language and writing system in order to arrive at reasonable translations.

Manuscript MS408 (Voynich) is unusual in a number of respects: 1. It uses an extinct language. 2. Its alphabet uses a number of unfamiliar symbols alongside more familiar symbols. 3. It includes no dedicated punctuation marks. 4. Some of the letters have symbol variants to indicate punctuation. 5. Some of the symbol variants indicate phonetic accents. 6. All of the letters are in lower case. 7. There are no double consonants. 8. It includes diphthong, triphthongs, quadriphthongs and even quintiphthongs for the abbreviation of phonetic components. 9. It includes some words and abbreviations in Latin. As a result, identifying the language and solving the writing system required some ingenuity and lateral thinking, but both were duly revealed. The writing system is rather more singular and less intuitive than modern systems, which may explain why it failed to become culturally ubiquitous and ultimately became obsolete. On the other hand, a significant vestige of the language has survived into the modern era, because its lexicon has been sequestered into the many modern languages of Mediterranean Europe. Here, the language and writing system are explained, so that other scholars can explore the manuscript for its linguistic and informative content.

This book examines the present-day distribution and diachronic evolution of a set of infinitival structures in Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian, making use of extensive corpus data and investigating how pragmatic factors and usage patterns interact with syntax. After a contrastive account of the patterns of clausal subordination in Latin and Romance, the rise of prepositional infinitives is traced through the documented history of the three languages, revealing astonishing parallels in their development. The analysis of the data shows how cognitive principles such as reanalysis and entrenchment combine with parameters such as relevance and usage frequency to cause syntactic change. Beyond providing a genuine explanation for the observed processes in the Romance languages, this study offers new evidence for the existence of language-independent, cross-linguistically applicable principles and mechanisms in language change.

A vernacular variety of Portuguese with a structure clearly distinct from that of European Portuguese has developed in Angola. This study examines the linguistic structure of the Angolan Vernacular Portuguese (AVP) that developed in Dundo in the northeastern province of Lunda Norte by systematically comparing the structure of its noun phrase and verb phrase to that of European Portuguese and the Bantu languages with which it has been in contact. Interpreting the precise nature of this contact from the time the Portuguese arrived in what is now Angola in 1482 with the perspective of recent developments in contact linguistics has made it clear that the mixed language variety that emerged was neither a pidgin nor a creole but rather a partially restructured variety of Portuguese that developed out of a continuum of learners’ interlanguages that eventually acquired norms and began to reapproach European Portuguese through secondary leveling. AVP was first described in print by Schuchardt (1888), but its use was long confined to certain social groups such as Afro-Europeans in coastal cities and later slavers in certain parts of the interior. It was not until the early 20th century when Portugal’s attempt to make Angola the kind of colony of settlement that Brazil had been increased the number of European native speakers of Portuguese to the extent that a substantial portion of Angola’s Bantu speakers needed AVP to get along. In the civil war following independence in 1975 the displacement of refugees increased the use of AVP among monolingual speakers. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that the political, economic and social conditions in Angola were met to trigger a shift from the local Bantu language, Cokwe, to an emerging Dundo Vernacular Portuguese (DVP). The features that distinguish DVP from other varieties of AVP (and their frequency) cast important light on the actual mechanisms of language shift and their sociolinguistic correlates.

This paper, written for a linguistics seminar entitled The Portuguese Language in Global Linguistic Perspective, analyzes the orthographic history of the Portuguese language. Also, the attempts at unifying the Brazilian variant and the European variant, as well as some of the similarities and differences between these two variants are discussed.

This article provides both a diachronic and synchronic account of the generalization of perfective auxiliary BE in specific irrealis modal contexts across numerous Romance varieties spoken in Italy and more widely within the Romània which has essentially gone unnoticed in the descriptive and theoretical literature. In some cases (southern Calabrian, Latin American Spanish, Portuguese), the distribution of BE is to be interpreted as a residue of an original unaccusative syntax which was exceptionally preserved under higher V-movement in irrealis contexts, whereas in others (person-driven dialects of central and southern Italy, southern peninsular Spanish, Romanian) this original unaccusative signal has been reanalysed as a specialized marker of irrealis (lexicalizing a high Mood head) and extended to all verb classes. In the case of Alguerès, by contrast, general-ization of irrealis be is argued to be the result of language contact with surrounding Sardinian dialects where a specific pattern of dedicated irrealis marking of Mood has been replicated. Finally, the reverse pattern with generalization of irrealis HAVE, the reanalysis of an aspectual dis-tinction between resultative and experiential perfects found in early Romance varieties (Neapoli-tan, Sicilian, Spanish, Catalan), is shown to involve a similar pattern of dedicated irrealis mark-ing in Mood.

A partir do século XVI, a língua portuguesa teve grande difusão um pouco por toda a Ásia e o Pacífico, sobretudo em consequência de dinâmicas de expansão colonial mas também por outras vias, tais como a imigração. Este capítulo apresenta e ilustra a diversidade de contextos de contacto linguístico que este facto motivou, bem como os seus principais resultados: os empréstimos mútuos (sobretudo lexicais) entre o português e as línguas da região; a influência duradoura do português nas línguas de contacto posteriormente estabelecidas em contexto colonial; e o desenvolvimento de variedades asiáticas do português, muitas vezes em paralelo e articulação com o de línguas crioulas de base portuguesa, dando relevo às que subsistem, ao panorama atual dos estudos científicos sobre estas variedades e aos domínios de investigação em aberto.

Este trabalho tem por foco a descrição dos usos não padrão do clítico lhe em variedades do português europeu, brasileiro e africano, L1 e L2, a partir de dados coletados nestas variedades e publicados em teses e outros estudos de referência. Nestas variedades, observa-se com maior ou menor frequência, o recurso ao clítico dativo lhe como uma variante de realização do objeto direto anafórico do caso acusativo de terceira pessoa com traço [+humano]. Conhecido por lheísmo, este uso generalizado poderá ser considerado como um exemplo de convergência linguística. Na análise proposta, serão também postos em evidência diferentes padrões de uso, relacionados com fatores sociais e linguísticos, e com distribuição lacunar pelas variedades consideradas. Tal diz respeito, por exemplo, ao uso de lhe de segunda pessoa no caso acusativo em variedades do Português do Brasil, em contraste com o que ocorre nas variedades europeias, que não apresentam ocorrências deste tipo. Com este estudo, pretende-se contribuir para a discussão em torno da relação linguística entre as variedades do português, na qual intervêm duas perspetivas: a que aponta para um continuum Brasil-Africa e para a proeminência do contacto linguístico na formação das variedades não europeias do português, por um lado, e, por outro, a hipótese da deriva linguística, segundo a qual, muitas das características inovadoras destas variedades correspondem a tendências já presentes no português medieval.

This paper provides a theoretical account of the phonological changes incurred by sibilant consonants in the history of Portuguese by framing its analysis within the precepts of Information Theory (Cover & Thomas 2006, Hume & Mailhot 2013, Shannon 1948). Utilizing the information-theoretic tools of probability, entropy, and surprisal to analyze diachronic data collected from the electronic Corpus do Português (Davies & Ferreira 2006-), this paper proposes that the changes in question result broadly from the amount of uncertainty associated with the sibilant system of each historical period of Portuguese, and specifically, from the higher or lower values of surprisal that characterized the sibilants prior to change.

Este artigo apresenta uma análise dos factores sociolinguísticos e históricos relevantes para a compreensão da génese e desenvolvimento do português vernáculo de Angola (PVA), seguida de uma análise morfossintáctica do seu sintagma nominal (SN). Os fenómenos linguísticos analisados incluem a marcação de género e número, marcação de posse e a ordem de colocação e marcação de caso dos pronomes pessoais.
Os dados linguísticos analisados, salvo indicação em contrário, provêm de um corpus oral semi-espontâneo recolhido em 2004, no Dundo, província da Lunda Norte. O corpus foi recolhido através de trinta entrevistas informais, recolha esta que visou adquirir uma visão geral das características linguísticas do PVA, por oposição à realização de um estudo quantitativo do mesmo, pelo que o critério subjacente à escolha dos falantes foi essencialmente o facto de serem falantes de português língua segunda. Não obstante, foram recolhidos dados relativos às suas características sociolinguísticas. Assim, dezasseis dos falantes apresentam idades compreendidas entre os 5 e os 17 anos e um grau médio de escolarização. Onze dos falantes apresentam idades compreendidas entre os 20 e os 56 anos e têm pouca ou nenhuma escolarização. Todos os falantes, excepto cinco dos falantes mais novos, são naturais do Dundo e falantes nativos de Cokwe, embora afirmem possuir um conhecimento passivo de outras línguas banto faladas no país e na região.
O objectivo deste artigo é determinar em que medida o SN denota o grau de reestruturação sofrida pelo PVA, i.e. o grau de retenção da morfossintaxe do português por oposição à introdução de características de substrato. Assim, avalia-se o papel que as estruturas das línguas envolvidas na situação de contacto têm no processo de reestruturação (ex. número e tipo de elementos existentes no SN e a posição do respectivo núcleo). Com base nesta análise, defende-se que a reestruturação do PVA está ainda em curso, especialmente no interior de Angola junto dos falantes bilingues em português e uma ou mais línguas banto.

A perspective is offered on the social and historical developments surrounding the formation of Korlai Creole Portuguese (KCP), a creole language spoken in the village of Korlai, located around 150 kms. south of Mumbai. I argue that lower-caste Hindus who were enslaved by the Portuguese in the Chaul-Korlai area were instrumental in the creation of KCP. I claim that KCP formed by 1530 and that it has been maintained up to the present day due in large part to the isolation of its speakers because of their religion, their caste, and their occupation.

O discurso dominante sobre a situação linguística vivida em Angola tende a retratar o país como exclusivamente falante de português. De facto, em poucos países africanos “has a European language assumed such prominence as a lingua franca among the mass of the population” como o português em Angola (Hodges 2004: 24). Contudo, não é menos verdade que apenas 26% dos angolanos o falam de facto como língua materna (ibid.), pois a maioria da população é monolingue ou bilingue numa das várias línguas africanas faladas no país com diferentes graus de proficiência naquilo a que tem vindo a ser referido na literatura como “português vernacularizado” (Fernandes e Ntondo 2002:19) ou “português de Angola”, aqui designado por português vernáculo de Angola (adiante PVA). O principal objectivo desta comunicação é o de fornecer uma descrição mais realista que a dominante tanto do estatuto real do PVA como das suas características linguísticas, procurando avaliar em que medida a emergência e natureza desta variedade podem ser explicados pela história sociolinguística do país. Nesse sentido, começa-se por analisar a descrição da situação linguística actual em Angola apresentada em trabalhos gerais de linguística e de dialectologia portuguesa, defendo-se que, contrariamente ao que aí é afirmado, as diferenças entre o português europeu e o PVA ultrapassam a questão do “sotaque” e dos empréstimos de palavras africanas e estendem-se a outros níveis da gramática. Esta conclusão é ilustrada não só com os trabalhos linguísticos de Schuchardt (1888) e Vasconcelos (1901), mas também com dados linguísticos orais recolhidos no interior de Angola em 2004. A análise desses dados demonstra que as características distintivas do PVA são semelhantes às de outras variedades de línguas europeias resultantes de contacto linguístico. Uma vez que “every outcome of language contact has been associated with a particular kind of social setting and circumstances that shape its unique character” (Winford 2003:10), analisa-se em seguida a história sociolinguística de Angola desde os primeiros tempos de colonização até ao presente, no sentido de avaliar em que medida as características específicas do PVA se relacionam com factores sociolinguísticos como a demografia das populações em contacto, a duração desse contacto, os níveis de bilinguismo existentes, os padrões sociais de colonização e o grau de acesso ao português por parte da população.

La fraseología histórica tiene como principal objetivo estudiar el origen y el proceso de formación de las unidades fraseológicas, determinando su funcionamiento gramatical y el contenido semántico que han adquirido en cada etapa de su evolución diacrónica. En este artículo hemos realizado un repaso por los principales trabajos que se han ocupado del estudio histórico de las locuciones del ámbito iberorrománico, marco de referencia en el que se integra un análisis descriptivo sobre algunas locuciones adverbiales y prepositivas que son comunes al castellano y al portugués medievales. The main objective of historical phraseology is to study the origin and development of phraseological units, determining their grammatical functioning and the semantic value that they have acquired at each stage of their diachronic evolution. In this paper, we have carried out a contrastive analysis on some adverbial and prepositional phrases that are common to Medieval Spanish and Portuguese.
