The epithelium of the secondary palate from embryonic mice (12-14 days of gestation) was enzymatically separated from the palatal mesenchyme and was cultured in association with mesenchyme from the embryonic tongue, incisor, and salivary gland. The histological differentiation of the epithelium in each type of heterotypic recombination was always palatal. Tongue mesenchyme supported full histodifferentiation of the palatal epithelium, whereas incisor mesenchyme supported only a limited histodifferentiation in the epithelium. Salivary gland mesenchyme in direct combination with palatal epithelium influenced the epithelium to become organized into a system of ducts and acini typical of glandular morphogenesis; histodifferentiation of the epithelium, however, was palatal. Salivary gland mesenchyme grown in isolation did not undergo glandular morphogenesis.

Coralline algae are one of the most important constructors of biogenic habitats. In the Mediterranean Sea, the dominant coralline algae species form crusts comprising formations known as coralligène, considered as very important fishing grounds by fishermen. Due to the destructive effect of fishing gear activities over coralligène, these formations were recently protected from the use of active benthic gears by the EU 1967/2006 Mediterranean fisheries management Regulation. However, the lack of maps and information on their distribution makes the effective application of these measures impossible. The present publication contributes to the mapping of coralligène in the southern Aegean Sea (eastern Mediterranean), and to the study of coralline algae formation morphology, distribution, development conditions and relation to fisheries using a combination of single-beam echo sounder, sidescan sonar, sub-bottom profiler recordings and biological and sedimentological ground-truthing techniques. The coralligène formations were recognized as two distinct acoustic signatures of localized backscatter facies distinguishable from other hard substrate reflectors at depths ranging from 55.9 to 114.0 m, but mainly between 70 and 90 m. Two types of formations were identified: minute reefs 0.5-2.5 m in height and superficial layer formations no more than 0.2 m thick over the substrate. The seismic profiles revealed a cavernous internal structure of the minute reefs and recorded their development on both hard and soft substrates. The distribution of formations was contagious, creating aggregations. The finding of superficial layer formations and coralline shreds around minute coralligène reefs indicated that the former could be an intermediate development type between isolated small coralline pebbles, rhodoliths, and minute reefs. Regarding the development conditions, sidescan sonar imagery indicated that the optimal conditions for the establishment and development of coralligène formations are medium intensity currents. Concerning human activity over coralligène, trawl traces were recorded near but not over minute reefs and both near and crossing superficial layer type aggregations, while a submarine cable was also recorded among minute reefs. The mapping of coralligène aggregation areas is essential for the application of the EU Regulation and the protection of this important marine habitat.

A phylogeny based on nrITS1 and trnL-F sequences resolves the Lejeunea tumida species group polyphyletic with individuals belonging in two clades either side of the basal-most node within Lejeunea. It is impossible for the Lejeunea tumida species group to be more polyphyletic and still be attributed to the same genus under the existing generic classification. A simulation-based approach to testing the null hypothesis of group monophyly rejects this at the P < 0.01 level of significance. Bayesian tests find very strong support for polyphyly, given the data. The monophyly of L. tumida s.s. + L. colensoana is fully supported; however, although Lejeunea tumida s.s. is nested within L. colensoana, this position is not supported. Both L. oracola and L. rhigophila are resolved as monophyletic. Whereas there is moderate support for the monophyly of L. rhigophila, there is no support for the monophyly of L. oracola. Neither is the monophyly of L. oracola + L. rhigophila supported in Bayesian or parsimony analysis.

Nowadays the main usage of the word "heuristic" is mostly the adjective in the sense of "guiding discovery" or "improving problem solving." Earlier descriptions of the Indo-Pacific red alga Portieria hornemannii lacked detailed information on its vegetative and reproductive development and morphology. An in-depth treatment is presented on the development of the uniaxial thallus and the formation of male, female and tetrasporangial nemathecia. Post fertilization events and carposporophyte development is described, confirming Kylin's presumption on the development of connecting filaments between the carpogonium and the auxiliary cell following fertilization. Phylogenetic analysis using chloroplast encoded rbcL and nuclear ribosomal LSU gene sequences, including members of Rhizophyllidaceae and their close relatives suggests a monophyletic family. Contarinia is resolved as the sister taxon of a clade uniting Nesophila, Ochtodes and Portieria. The relationships among the latter genera remain largely unresolved.

The corpus of narratives produced in Germany since 1943 about the battle of Stalingrad appears as a multifaceted "grand narrative" in which historiographical and mythical morphology coexist. The Nazi myth of Stalingrad contributed to shaping the cultural memory of the event during the war, and historians lately integrated that myth into the historical discourse about the "overcoming of the past" (Vergangenheitsbewältigung). In the meantime, hundreds of veterans published their witness-accounts about the great battle, blending the two spheres of history and myth on the level of storytelling. While historiographical discourse aims to consolidate positive knowledge of the battle in terms of chronology, witness-narratives blur chronological storytelling with the mythical archetypes of conquest, defeat, fall, and resurrection. I will examine the morphological characteristics of the "grand narrative" of Stalingrad by combining the notion of "structure" (Koselleck) with that of the narrative archetype (Frye) and by integrating these tools with the theory of adaptive and evolutional narratives (Carrol; Scalise-Sugyjama) to claim that the "grand narrative" of Stalingrad can be read as the mythic-historical account of how the German community survived defeat and was reborn from its own ashes.

This article proposes a new formal reconstruction of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) nouns containing the suffix *–oi–. I argue that both primary and non-primary derivatives in this class had stress alternating between the derivational suffix and the following inflectional ending (e.g., ACC.SG *[-óy-ṃ] vs. GEN *[-y-ós]) rather than the "amphikinetic" alternation between root and inflectional ending (ACC.SG *[´-oy-ṃ] vs. GEN *[-y-ós]) that is traditionally assumed for all primary nominals with suffixal *[o]-vocalism under the widely accepted “Erlangen Model” (Schindler 1975a,b, Rix 1992) of Indo-European morphophonology. Support for this alternative reconstruction comes from Hittite, which confirms that the suffixal stress seen in the Greek reflex of this noun class was inherited from PIE rather than root stress as in Vedic Sanskrit. More broadly, I contend that an adequate account of the prosodic behavior of PIE *–oi-stems requires (i) abandoning the traditional connection between suffixal *[o]-grade and "amphikinetic" word stress; and (ii) adopting a framework (such as the one articulated by Kiparsky 2010) in which the suffix's capacity to attract stress in both primary and non-primary derivation can be modeled in a unified way.

Currently used in many countries in the world, vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) applications include soil and water conservation systems in agricultural environment, slope stabilization, mine rehabilitation, contaminated soil and saline land remediation, as well as wastewater treatment. The root system morphology of vetiver was investigated in a small plantation growing on abandoned marl terraces in southern Spain. Root distribution with depth, laterally from the plant, as well as root parameters such as root diameter and tensile strength were also investigated. The profile wall method combined with the block excavation showed that the vetiver grass grows numerous positively gravitropic roots of more or less uniform diameter. These were generally distributed in the uppermost soil horizon closer to the culm base. In situ shear test on blocks of soil permeated with vetiver roots were carried out and showed a greater shear strength resistance than the samples of non vegetated soil. The root reinforcement measured in situ was comparable to the one predicted by the perpendicular root reinforcement model. The stability of a modelled terraced slope planted with vetiver was marginally greater than the one of a nonvegetated slope. A local instability on one terrace can have a detrimental effect on the overall stability of the terraced slope.

During the last 10-15 years it began to contract. Along with other urban processes such as urbanization, gentrification and emergence of ghettos, deindustrialization represents a major trend in Bucharest's recent history. Deindustrialization is both an economic and a cultural transformation. Universal Grammar is the System of Principles, conditions and rules which are elements or properties of all human languages. All human beings share part of their knowledge of languages. U G is their common possession regardless of which is each one's mother tongue. Even if somebody speaks English or Japanese he has to use Verb phrases, Noun phrases, know how to use the phonetic properties, know the syntax of the words, even if he does not realise it he uses his/her U G. A person's language is U G plus the particular settings of parameters, plus lexicon of available words. The Grammar is the logic behind each language and by claiming that a U G exists, Noam Chomsky is drawing attention to the same problem that so worried Einstein, Morowitz, Wigner et al. Namely, that the human mind appears to have access to a non-personal and therefore universal reality (Cruse,). As Albert says the child starts with Universal Grammar as an innate endowment, already there, with all its parametrized options, and has only to hear how the options need to be set in his particular language to attain full grammar of that language (Albert 4). It is found that the mistakes that the children make are never against Universal Grammar.

The intestine of poultry plays a significant role in the health and production through enzymatic and microbial digestion of feed as well as absorption of nutrients. The current study was designed to explore the gross and histological alterations in the broiler duodenum and cecum triggered by dietary dexamethasone (DEX). The study was conducted on four homogenous groups of one-day-old chicks (20 chicks/group) i.e. one control (Non-DEX) and three treatment groups (DEX-1, DEX-2, and DEX-3). The broilers were fed commercial broiler feed containing DEX at the rate of 0, 3, 5, and 7mg/kg feed in the Non-DEX, DEX-1, DEX-2, and DEX-3 groups, respectively. The gross morphologic and morphometric data were recorded immediately after the collection of samples on days 7, 14, 21, and 28. Then, the tissue samples were processed for histological investigation. In the gross morphometric study, the weight, length, and width of the intestine were found significantly less in the DEX groups. Histopathological study results showed degeneration of intestinal glands (duodenum), mucosa, and lymphatic nodules with loss of lymphatic nodules (cecum). The percentage of the degenerated nodule was also increased. The length, width, and surface area of the duodenal villi, thickness of the mucosal layer of the cecum, and diameter of the cecal lymphatic nodules were substantially decreased in all the DEX groups. The magnitude of the alterations was associated with both the dose and duration of DEX treatment. However, the current study results indicate that DEX treatment significantly alters the morphologic and morphometric characteristics of the broiler intestine.

Exposure to mercury in the environment continues to be a significant worldwide concern, especially for developing embryos and fetuses. While extensive research effort has focused on the effects of mercury on the developing nervous system, much less is known concerning adverse effects of mercury on other organ systems, including the development of skeletal muscle. We exposed developing zebrafish embryos to a range of concentrations of mercuric chloride (100 to 400 µg/liter or ppb) and compared them to control embryos (0 µg/L mercuric chloride). Embryos were examined at 48 hours post fertilization (hpf) for morphometry and morphological deformities of skeletal muscle fibers in the trunk and tail. Embryos exposed to 400 ppb mercuric chloride showed decreased trunk and tail areas compared to control embryos. A dose-dependent reduction in muscle fiber length was observed, and exposure to all concentrations of mercuric chloride used in this study resulted in decreased muscle fiber immunohistochemical staining with anti-myosin antibodies. Irregular muscle fiber diameters, twisted muscle fibers, and degenerated muscle fibers were observed in sections of embryos stained with eosin at the higher exposure concentrations. Evidence presented in this study suggests that exposure to even low concentrations of mercuric chloride adversely affects skeletal muscle fiber development or muscle fiber integrity, or both.

Transparency technique to demonstrate cartilage and skeleton has been used from years 70. This consists basically of the muscle digestion through an enzyme (trypsine), and the staining of cartilage and skeleton using alcian blue and alizarin red on specimens previously fixed to formalin. This technique can be used to study the state of the cartilage and the bones in different stages of the development and to observe abnormalitys. Also it can be used to demonstrate museum specimen skeleton preserved in liquid. In this article is showed the application of this technique for the first time in rodents and adult bats, besides some annotations to optimize the procedure.

Lignin powder, obtained from an abundant and low cost source, straw, through a low environmental impact process, the steam explosion, is used for the preparation of blends with low-density polyethylene (LDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and atactic polystyrene (PS).

Peacocks, Pavo cristatus, defend small display sites and aggregate to form leks. Observations of one lek, consisting of 10 males, showed that there was considerable variance in mating success. The most successful male copulated 12 times whilst the least successful males obtained no copulations. Over 50% of the variance in mating success could be attributed to variance in train morphology; there was a significant positive correlation between the number of eye-spots a male had in his train and the number of females he mated with. Furthermore, analysis of female behaviour provided good evidence that this non-random mating is a result of a female preference. On no occasion did a female mate with the first male that courted her and, on average, females visited three different males. Females thus always reject some potential mates. For 10 out of 11 sequences ending in a successful copulation, the male 'chosen' at the end of a sequence had the highest eye-spot number among the males visited. These data support Darwin's hypothesis that the peacock's train has evolved, at least in part, as a result of a female preference.

With the increase of human activity and corresponding increase in anthropogenic sounds in marine waters of the Arctic, it is necessary to understand its effect on the hearing of marine wildlife. We have conducted a baseline study on the spiral ganglion and Rosenthal's canal of the cochlea in beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) as an initial assessment of auditory anatomy and health. We present morphometric data on the length of the cochlea, number of whorls, neuron densities along its length, Rosenthal's canal length, and cross-sectional area, and show some histological results. In belugas, Rosenthal's canal is not a cylinder of equal cross-sectional area, but its crosssection is greatest near the apex of the basal whorl. We found systematic variation in the numbers of neurons along the length of the spiral ganglion, indicating that neurons are not dispersed evenly in Rosenthal's canal. These results provide data on functionally important structural parameters of the beluga ear. We observed no signs of acoustic trauma in our sample of beluga whales.

In the past several years, there has been a trend in the sunscreen/ cosmetics industry to replace micron-sized titanium dioxide (TiO 2) particles with nanoscale materials. The increased use of nanoscale TiO 2 has resulted in questions about these and other nanoproducts. This study examines the effects of using nanoscale TiO 2 on ultraviolet (UV) attenuation in simple to complex sunscreen formulations. UV light attenuation, product stability, and potential damage to the skin barrier were examined with both nanoscale and microscale TiO 2 particles. Results indicate that none of the formulations decreased the barrier function of the skin and the best UV attenuation occurs when the TiO 2 particles are stabilized with a coating and evenly distributed such as with non-agglomerated coated nanoscale materials. This indicates that nanoscale TiO 2 may have better efficacy while lacking toxicity. Ré sumé Au cours des dernières années, nous avons constaté une tendance dans l'industrie solaire/cosmétique pour le remplacement des particules micron-taille de dioxyde de titane (TiO 2) avec des matériaux de nano-échelle. L'utilisation accrue des particules de TiO 2 l'échelle du nanométre a engendré des questions sur tous les produits contenant des matériaux nano-échelle. Cette étude examine les effets de l'utilisation de particule de TiO 2 a l'échelle du nanomètre sur l'atténuation des rayons UV dans les formulations de crème solaire simple et complexe. Nous avons étudié l'atténuation de la luminosité ultraviolet (UV), la stabilité du produit et les effets sur la fonction barrière de la peau, avec les particules de TiO 2 nano-échelle et micro-échelle. Les résultats indiquent que les particules a l'échelle du nanométre, enduits et non-aggloméré, fournissent une excellente atténuation UV, sans diminuer la fonction barrière de la peau. Ceci suggére que les particules de TiO 2 a l'échelle du nanométre ont une meilleure efficacité, sans poser des inquiétudes en ce qui concerne leur securité.

Patients' demographic and laboratory data including age, sex, renal function and 24 hour urinary protein were collected.

Diabetes mellitus is a frequent and serious metabolic illness all over the world and plants have been a desirable source of medicine recently. Diabetes has unpleasant effect on male reproductive system and it may lead to male infertility. It causes erectile dysfunction and reduces ejaculate volume by affecting the health of small blood vessels and the small nerves that control ejaculation and also decreases libido by decreasing testosterone levels. Current study evaluated the possible protective efficiency of Lepidium sativum (Garden cress) seed extract on fasting blood sugar (FBS) and then assessed histopathological change of epididymis in streptozotocine (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. We randomly categorized 50 adult male Wistar rats into five groups (each 10 rats). Group 1 was control placebo group receiving only 0.1 ml normal saline via gastric gavages, Group 2 as control diabetic rats received an intraperitoneal (IP) injection of STZ 60 mg/kg body weight. Rats with FBS >250 mg/dl were considered as diabetic. Group 3 were diabetic rats receiving insulin in dose 3U/100 g body weight and Groups 4 and 5 were diabetic rats that received 0.1 cc of 200 and 400 mg/kg‚ ethanol extract of Lepidium sativum seed by gavages daily. One day after the last gavages, rats were anesthetized by chloroform. Epididymis duct was removed from abdomen and weighed with a digital scale. Afterwards, samples were putted in Bouin's solution for histological measurement. Administration of 200 and 400 mg/ml doses of Lepidium sativum seed extract increased epithelium height and decreased interstitial volume density and fibro muscular thickness significantly. Also, volume density of epithelium, fibro muscular, lumen and interstitial decreased significantly. Tubular and lumen diameter did not change significantly in different groups. It appears Lepidium sativum seed extract is a beneficial protective supplementary agent against adverse effects of diabetes on male reproductive system.

Most plant roots are associated with glomalean fungi forming arbuscular rnycorrhizas (AM) and a wide range are also colonized by ascomycetous dark septate endophytes (DSE). Bromeliaceae species can be epiphytic, rupicolous or terrestrial but their mycorrhizal status is poorly studied. We examined the AM and DSE status of 5 epiphytic and 4 terrestrial Bromeliaceae from an arid area of Central Argentina. The terrestrial species were either dually associated (AM and DSE) or non-associated whereas the epiphytes were only DSE colonized. Terrestrial Brorneliaceae that formed AM-DSE associations were likely responding to the arid conditions of the area and the availability of AM fungal (AMF) spores in the soil. The terrestrial Bromelia ubaniana was not colonized either by AMF or DSE. This could reflect its root morphology and high number of root hairs. DSE are endosymbiotic in the stressful ecosystems experienced by canopy epiphytes in the studied environment. The different fungal associations are discussed in relation to the three Bromeliaceae subfamiles and we suggest that environmental features determine the type of association formed by species in this plant family.

Many children walk barefoot in South Africa. Unshod (barefoot) or partially shod (thong-type sandals) leisure behaviour may persist in adulthood. This study investigated whether unshod childhood results in adult increased forefoot width. Sixty urban adult females, of Afrikaans, English, Greek, Ndebele, Pedi, Sotho, Swati, Tswana, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu ethnic origin, constituted two groups of thirty participants each. The linguistic groups corresponded to one group of Caucasoid descent while the other group comprised participants of Black African tribal descent. Selected foot measurements, body weight and height were combined with structured interview data regarding subjective memory of time spent partially shod or unshod in childhood, current partially shod or unshod leisure behaviour and shoe fit experience. More than half (62%) displayed increased or above standard forefoot width (forefoot width ratio ≤ 2.62). Results of one-tailed upper-tailed t-tests (t = 0.942, d.f. = 29) support H 1 (5% level of significance) that walking unshod does not result in wider than standard forefoot width. Correlation analysis indicated a significant association between body mass index and both forefoot width and arch length but only in black females (p-value = 0.0000). Results cannot support the hypothesis that an unshod childhood per se results in increased forefoot width. The influence of increased body mass index to forefoot width and arch length in only one of the two groups suggests that other factors such as genetics play a role. These findings may have important implications for health professionals and footwear manufacturers alike.

A new approach for studying the effect of temperature on anodic oxide growth on aluminium is presented in this paper. Using an in-house developed electrode holder, anodizing is performed under conditions of applied and controlled electrode temperature. The influence of temperature on the process is evaluated by experiments in a broad temperature range for both the electrode and the electrolyte temperature. The electrochemical behaviour of the aluminium electrodes is demonstrated to be more susceptible to variations of the electrode temperature than to variations of the electrolyte temperature. Concerning the morphology of the anodic film it is shown that by cooling the electrode a normal oxide layer could be grown at high electrolyte temperatures, whereas anodizing in a cool electrolyte at high electrode temperature results in a collapsed porous structure at the oxide surface. Furthermore, the electrode temperature affects the formation ratio of the oxide to a larger extent than the electrolyte temperature, indicating its important influence even on the level of the ionic conductivity during anodic oxide growth. All observations indicate that merely considering the electrolyte temperature upon studying the influence of temperature on the process is not sufficient; the electrode temperature is much more determining.

öTo elucidate the role of dendritic morphology in signal transfer, the passive propagation of somatic and dendritic potentials was compared in multi-compartment models of three interneuron subpopulations in the CA1 region. Nine calbindin-, 15 calretinin-and 10 parvalbumin-containing cells were modelled incorporating the detailed geometry, the currents of the action potentials in the soma, and the AMPA, N-methyl-D-aspartate and GABA-B receptor-mediated postsynaptic currents in the dendrites. The cable properties show characteristic di¡erences among the subpopulations. The morphotonic length of calbindin and calretinin cell dendrites is larger than of parvalbumin cells. Thus parvalbumin cells are more compact than calbindin or calretinin cells unless the ratio of their axial and membrane resistivities exceeds the ratios of the other two cell types by more than 33%. In calbindin cells, the distal parts of the extremely long dendrites that invade the alveus are virtually isolated from the soma for passively propagating signals. The synaptic potentials evoked at a given morphotonic distance from the soma show larger di¡erences locally on the dendrites than on the soma in all subpopulations. Both the somatic and dendritic amplitude ratios are the smallest in PV cells. In calbindin cells the somatic amplitude of synaptic potentials evoked at the same morphotonic distance from the soma is similar regardless of the number of branchpoints along their path. In calretinin and parvalbumin cells, from dendrites with long primary segments synaptic potentials reach the soma with larger amplitude than from dendrites that are branching close to the soma. The dendrites with the larger impact on somatic membrane potential are usually the dendrites that enter the stratum lacunosum-moleculare. These results indicate that dendritic morphology plays a role in changing the e¡ectiveness of synaptic potentials evoked at di¡erent dendritic locations, and in this way is likely to be an important factor in determining the integrative properties of the di¡erent neuron populations.

One of the current challenges for application of PEM fuel cell is to find corrosion resistant, electrically conductive, light weight, cost competitive bipolar plate material. Low temperature carburization (LTC) of stainless steels is a novel, patented process by Swagelok Company. This paper addresses the corrosion resistance characteristics of LTC SS 316 for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) bipolar plate applications. Corrosion properties of this material were studied using potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests in simulated (1 M H 2 SO 4 + 2 ppm HF, 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 , pH: 4.0, and 5% HCl + 5% Na 2 SO 4) PEMFC conditions. LTC SS 316 showed excellent corrosion resistance in these conditions compared to SS 316. The mechanism of anodic dissolution and general corrosion of LTC SS 316 was observed to be similar to SS 316 however the extent of LTC SS 316 corrosion was less. LTC SS 316 showed corrosion currents well below 16 A cm −2 in anodic and cathodic atmospheres under potentiostatic conditions. The potentiostatic current rapidly falls to ∼4.0 and ∼1.5 A cm −2 under anodic and cathodic conditions, respectively. LTC SS 316 was observed to form a thinner oxide layer as compared to SS 316 after 24 h of potentiostatic testing. Moreover LTC SS 316 lowered the interfacial contact resistance by approximately 24% as compared to SS 316 after corrosion testing. Hence this study clearly states the performance advantage of using LTC SS 316 as bipolar plate material as compared to conventional materials.

The instability of supported liquid membranes has been a major impediment to practical applications. To address this shortcoming, we have developed a method to form semi-permeable polyamide skin layers in situ on supported liquid membranes containing an anion-exchange extractant (trioctylamine) and a neutral extractant (tributyl phosphate). These skin layers encapsulate large extractant molecules within the membranes but allow the transport of small species across the membranes. A liquid±liquid interfacial polymerization reaction was employed to form the polyamide skin layers utilizing monomers that are compatible with the extractants. SEM examination of the membranes shows the polyamide skin layer to be about 1 micron thick with pore sizes below resolution. Membranes with polyamide skin layers showed a typical¯ux of 1 mmol/s m 2 of Cr(VI), about half that exhibited by similar membranes without skin layers. # 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Rubbery-glassy block copolymer dispersions are an attractive solution for toughening rigid thermoplastics like polystyrene without affecting optical transparency. An interesting facet of the copolymers used is molecular disorder, artificially introduced during anionic synthesis through composition gradients along the copolymer chain and/or blending and partial coupling of different copolymers. In particular, this level of disorder is apparently a key to achieve the desired PS/copolymer blend morphologies and properties in short processing times. In this work, we investigate the role of these "synthesis imperfections" on self-assembly of styrene-rich asymmetric gradient triblock copolymers, denoted S1-G-S2, where Si are pure polystyrene blocks and G is a gradient copolymer of styrene and butadiene. Kinetic modeling of conversion data is used to predict gradient composition profiles for the anionic copolymerization conditions used. Self-assembly, dynamic viscoelastic behavior, and experimentally determined mesoscopic composition profiles across microdomains are discussed in light of the particular copolymer structure.

Abstrat-Mammalian cells can be cultured and therefore studied in vitro. Normally, the cells' morphology and other static properties are observed with the aid of a light microscope. A method is described here that allows observation of the dynamical aspects of cultured cells. Mammalian fibroblasts are cultured in polystyrene dishes that contain evaporated gold electrodes. As the cells attach to the electrodes, their presence and their motion is directly reflected in the -measured impedance.
