Geography of Tourism

Geographers have long pondered the role of tourism in producing and shaping space. The description of resort geographies popular in the 1980s and 1990s has gradually given way to the current vogue for place-making and place marketing, re-centering geography in the tourism field. More recently, however, the rise of the sharing economy and ‘relational tourism’ has caused researchers to look beyond the construction and consumption of place and to delve into the co-creation of localities between tourists and residents. These shorter and longer-term ‘locals’ increasingly find each other without the intervention of the traditional tourism industry, giving rise to whole new fields of economic, cultural and social exchange. The growth of companies such as Couchsurfing, Airbnb and Uber not only represents a challenge to traditional  views of tourism, but is also reshaping the localities inhabited by tourists. This analysis examines the consequences of the new localities of tourism and they ways in which this might affect the future of tourism itself.

This special issue is a reflection by tourism scholars on the initial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the world, with travel and tourism being among the most significant areas to bear those impacts. However, instead of an analysis of the impacts of COVID-19 on tourism places and sectors, as is the emphasis for many other journal special issues this year, the papers in this issue focus on visions of how the pandemic
events of 2020 are contributing to a possibly substantial, meaningful and positive transformation of the planet in general, and tourism specifically. This is not a return to a ‘normal’ that existed before – but is instead a vision of how the world is changing, evolving, and transforming into something different from what it was before the 2020 global pandemic experience. Resumen: El artículo comparte algunas reflexiones sustraídas de los debates que recientemente han irrumpido en la propaganda política, las agendas de los medios de comunicación, las reivindicaciones de los movimientos sociales y las asociaciones vecinales. En primer lugar, se hace una reflexión partiendo de la hipótesis que el llamado overtourism también sinónimo de masificación, saturación o presión turística, no es un fenómeno ni tan novedoso ni tan reciente. En segundo lugar, se observan algunos elementos que han despertado el malestar social y que han desencadenado el efecto amplificador de estos debates en diversos entornos turísticos. Por último, se observan algunas estrategias que se denominan como 5D (desestacionalización, descongestión, descentralización, diversificación, deluxe tourism) que son promocionadas como potenciales soluciones para enfrentar la problemática analizada. Estas reflexiones nacen en el marco de una investigación en la ciudad de Barcelona, que se alimenta prevalentemente de la etnografía y el análisis cuantitativo.

Abstract: The paper shares some reflections of the debates emerging from the political propaganda, social movements and neighborhood associations complaints. The paper takes into account the impact that overtourism, social unrest and tourismphobia have had on the media agenda. These insights are based on the hypothesis that these developments are neither a new nor recent phenomena. Beyond that, the research focuses on elements that have awakened social unrest and triggered the amplification of these debates. Finally, the paper analyzes some strategies referred to as the 5D (deseasonalization, decongestion, decentralization, diversification, deluxe tourism), which are being promoted as an analytical tool to unpack the complexities and current developments unfolding overtourism. Ethnographic and quantitative research conducted in the city of Barcelona informs this study.

This paper reviews and synthesises multi-disciplinary research on destination experiences and outlines some of the future challenges facing researchers and practitioners. The paper is split into four main parts: the first reviews social scientific conceptualisations of consumption and consumer experiences; the second considers marketing and management perspectives; and the third focuses specifically on consumption experiences in destination settings. The final part examines the challenges for future research and identifies three critical sets of issues: the first concerns matters of scale and focus when conceptualising and examining destination experiences; the second deals with the various and seemingly incompatible conceptual and methodological approaches required to explore destination experiences; and the third concerns the increasing necessity to recognise complexity in terms of understanding the various stakeholders, processes and practices and their interactions, which shape destination experiences.

Desde la década pasada ha empezado a extenderse en varios destinos turísticos, sobre todo urbanos, una crítica contra la saturación turística liderada –en muchos casos– por colectivos sociales. A partir de la segunda mitad del siglo pasado, la diseminación del turismo en barrios y centros urbanos ha ido generado lo que los angloparlantes definen como overtourism.
A pesar de que en el ámbito español los medios de comunicación hayan hecho eco del fenómeno nombrándolo como turismofobia, el asunto en cuestión es mucho más complejo de lo que parece. Por ello, el informe abordará algunas cuestiones sobre el fenómeno a partir del análisis de casos concretos.

Over the last decades Barcelona has experienced social and economic
transformations brought by the conversion of peripheral
urban neighborhoods into tourist attractions. In this sense urban
tourism has been the latest chapter of spatial reorganization to
sustain capitalism within the global neoliberal environment in the
Catalan city. In addition, the urban commodification process has
expanded into not only central and historical districts, but also
more peripheral zones outside the tourist bubble. Those transformations
signify a symbolic turn: they became part of the centre.
Since the 1992 Olympic Games, Barcelona’s brand, both for the
city and for tourism, has experienced an important promotion
where the urban periphery has become both part of the centre,
as well as part of its global city imagery through placemaking,
public policy, and political decisions. In short, the steady inclusion
of neighborhoods such as Vila de Gracia and Poblenou into the
tourist experience enhances the Barcelonan tourist imagery. The
inclusion of new cultural icons and tourist attractions embody a
slight spatial and symbolic turn to boost the city’s visitor activities.
In order to facilitate an in-depth comprehension, the ethnographical
approach has been taken.

Ce travail sur la mise en tourisme de l’Ardenne se veut une première pierre sur laquelle, nous l’espérons, des recherches ultérieures, relatives à l’Ardenne mais aussi à d’autres espaces, pourront venir s’appuyer mais aussi se confronter. Pour poser les fondements, il fallait tenir compte du système touristique dans son ensemble et l’attaquer sur plusieurs fronts : celui des représentations, de la perception, celui correspondant à la réalité plus physique du territoire, celui de ses acteurs et en particulier des touristes qui le pratiquent. C’est que nous avons tenté. Notre travail s’est prioritairement basé sur les ouvrages touristiques (guides touristiques, récits de voyage et leurs multiples combinaisons), source, injustement décriée par certains scientifiques mais pourtant incontournable pour le chercheur, pour autant qu’il s’attache à la questionner de manière approfondie et avec des outils renouvelés. Ces outils, nous les avons trouvés dans la cartographie numérique, empruntée à la géographie. Elle a ici été employée de manière innovante et dynamique pour traduire dans l’espace les données présentes dans les sources et ainsi clarifier, illuminer les processus et les transformations qui s’opèrent au sein des espaces considérés. Dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, notre approche historique, s’est nourrie d’autres disciplines pour aiguiser ses méthodes. Elle s’en est aussi inspirée pour structurer ce travail. Le concept de mise en tourisme, créé par les géographes, exprime le passage, pour un territoire, d’un état non touristique vers un état touristique. Nous l’avons combiné, de manière souple, au concept d’artialisation, conçu par le philosophe Alain Roger et qui exprime quant à lui le passage pour un espace de l’état de territoire à celui de paysage, soit grâce aux transformations, aux modifications physiques opérées sur le territoire lui-même par divers acteurs – on parle alors d’artialisation in situ –, soit grâce aux transformations opérées dans (et par) le regard collectif posé sur cet espace et induites par des modèles ou des schèmes de perception – l’artialisation est alors dite « in visu ». L’intérêt des deux concepts résidait notamment dans la place particulièrement significative que chacun d’eux accordent aux acteurs. Un cadre qui s’envisageait selon trois grands axes était ainsi donné à nos résultats : Le premier de ces axes est celui de la mise en tourisme in visu, qui correspond aux transformations opérées dans le regard collectif posé sur l’espace considéré, qui transforme cet espace en territoire touristique, à travers des modèles ou des schèmes de perception. Nous y avons analysé l’origine de l’imaginaire associé à l’Ardenne, son contenu et son évolution ainsi que la construction de l’espace touristique ardennais comme un espace cohérent à travers les représentations et perceptions qui lui sont associées dans une série de médias (ouvrages touristiques, peintures, photographies, etc.). Le second axe choisi est celui de la mise en tourisme in situ qui correspond aux modifications opérées de manière plus physique sur le territoire. Nous y avons privilégié une approche basée sur l’analyse approfondie des implantations hôtelières touristiques et de leurs exploitants, sur celle des curiosités touristiques et enfin, dans une moindre mesure de la résidence secondaire. De manière générale, cette partie insiste sur le caractère progressif et l’ancrage local des infrastructures touristiques ardennaises qui contrastent avec la mise en tourisme in situ de la côte belge, réalisée à coup de projets de grande ampleur avec des capitaux extérieurs. Le troisième axe correspond aux acteurs : ceux qui interviennent dans les processus décrits ci-dessus mais aussi et surtout les touristes. Nous nous sommes intéressée dans le dernier chapitre à leurs origines géographiques, à leur profil socio-économique (petite et moyenne bourgeoisie essentiellement), à leurs pratiques, etc. L’analyse de la source particulièrement exceptionnelle que constitue le livre d’or des grottes de Rochefort a notamment permis de mettre en évidence, aux côtés d’une sociabilité familiale classique, la présence en nombre de touristes (environ 30% des visiteurs de la grotte) venant par le biais de diverses associations créées dans le but d’encadrer les loisirs mais aussi de protéger et consolider les fondements de la nation. Elles constituent l’une des bases sur lequel s’appuie le tourisme en Ardenne mais aussi, pour certaines, les prémices d’un tourisme social. Notre étude sur la mise en tourisme de l’Ardenne belge s’attache donc à expliquer comment ce territoire devient progressivement synonyme d’espace touristique, d’espace culturel et de loisirs. Elle en donne le sens. Elle permet sans aucun doute de mieux comprendre la genèse du tourisme en Ardenne, les liens profonds qui existent entre cette nouvelle activité et le territoire dans lequel elle s’insère. Elle lui donne un cadre spatial et explicite les processus actifs en son sein. Elle permet également certainement de mieux comprendre l’articulation et les différences entre le champ des représentations et celui des pratiques et de leurs infrastructures. Elle s’est intéressée de près aux acteurs de ces différentes sphères. A une autre échelle, elle éclaire une facette particulière de l’histoire de la Belgique.

In  the  western  part  of  the  state  of  West  Bengal  in  India  is  located  Santiniketan – Tagore’s  “Abode  of  Peace.”  The  place  is  the  site  of  Visva  Bharati,  a  world  reknowned  residential  university  as  well  as  a  Brahmacharya  Asrama  established  by  Rabindranath  Tagore  himself.  Santiniketan,  in  the  Birbhum  District  of  West  Bengal,  and  its  environs,  provide  ample  scope  for  the  development  of  ecotourism.  It  is  a  place  where  ecotourism  and  rural  tourism  go  hand  in  hand.  The  place  has  an  idyllic  setting  and  offers  enchanting  scenic  beauty,  with  a  typical  rural  ambience.  Around  Santiniketan,  there  exist  a  number  of  tribal  villages  inhabited  by  the  Santhal  tribe. 
Ecotourism  combines  nature  tourism,  wilderness  tourism  and  agri-tourism.  This  form  of  niche  tourism  is  essentially  rural  in  character.  It  is  a  type  of  Special  Interest  Tourism  that  has  emerged  recently  and  has  evoked  concern  among  social  scientists.  Of  late,  ecotourism  has  become  popular  in  the  tribal  villages  around  Santiniketan.  A  unique  natural  landscape  here  is  formed  by  the  khoai,  a  vast,  desolate  area  with  lateritic  soil  and  gulley  erosion.  Resorts  have  been  built  in  the  khoai  by  private  enterpreneurs  where  tourists  flock  round  the  year.  Ballavpurdanga,  along  with  some  other  typical  Santhal  villages – Boner  Pukur  Danga,  Mouldanga  and  Phuldanga,  bordering  the  Sonajhuri  forest  in  the  khoai,  have  been  brought  within  the  Rural  Tourism  Scheme  under  the  Endogenous  Tourism  Project  (ETP)  introduced  by  the  Government  of  India  in  the  early  years  of  the  21st  century.
Tagore  was  a  wayfarer.  Although  in  his  times,  the  concept  of  ecotourism  had  not  emerged,  the  Poet  was  one  with  Nature  and  it  may  be  said  without  doubt  that  he  would  have  definitely  advocated  the  practice.  This  paper  studies  the  scope  and  sustainability  of  ecotourism  in  Santiniketan  and  seeks  to  find  out  the  benefits  it  can  provide  to  the  host  community  and  to  the  visitors.  The  paper  also  attempts  to  investigate  how  ecotourism,  as  a  practice,  can  serve  actively  in  a  rural  reconstruction  programme  as  envisaged  by  Tagore.

Este trabajo ofrece una aproximación desde el campo de la antropología, encauzada al análisis de los procesos que definen el desarrollo del turismo en la Riviera Maya, tanto como la estructuración de la economía y la vida social de sus múltiples localidades. Con base en tres ejemplos de distintas escalas y naturaleza (la Riviera Maya, Tulum y Campamento Hidalgo), realizo una serie de descripciones dirigidas a reconstruir y explicar a grandes rasgos distintos modelos de integración de espacios turísticos, la forma en que opera la mercantilización de los lugares, las personas y la cultura, así como el tipo de repercusiones que es posible percibir en las localidades.

Each contribution in this volume deals with different aspects of neoliberalization in the context of tourism and raise several significant questions regarding the neoliberal projects, discourses and practices in particular as they shape the relationships between states, the economy and society.

La contraposición y relación entre la tendencia a conocer y consumir productos y servicios en contacto con las comunidades de acogida y la saturación turística de un destino será el foco del presente reporte. La saturación turística no se produce solo en relación a la tendencia turística de vivir la experiencia bajo el lema “live like a local”, sin embargo, la incursión y la presencia de flujos turísticos hacía áreas y atractivos turísticos no preparados podría provocar la congestión de bienes comunes, equipamientos e infraestructuras.

Este libro, único en su género en México, explora la dimensión espacial establecida entre el turismo y el sexoservicio en este país, a partir de la visión de trabajadores sexuales que se involucran con clientes varones; este libro resuelve el reto teórico y metodológico en torno al vacío que existía en México sobre la investigación del turismo y el sexo, sin aquellos prejuicios y clichés que tanto han distorsionado la objetividad del análisis académico de la sexualidad masculina; en la obra se indaga la complejidad del turismo-homoerotismo; a su vez, se reconocen las múltiples prácticas e identidades sexuales de los actores implicados; se conceptúa el fenómeno que supone el intercambio de sexo por dinero, del que se pueden encontrar alusiones variadas como sexoservicio, comercio sexual, trabajo sexual y prostitución que, en el marco del turismo y la globalización, tienen connotaciones específicas que en este libro se analizan extensamente. En la parte de esta obra dedicada a los estudios de caso, se abordan las siguientes ciudades: Ciudad de México, Guadalajara, Veracruz, Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cancún y Tijuana, cuyas particularidades emanan de sus contextos espaciales diferentes, pero con los resultados reveladores que permiten también identificar patrones comunes en el uso del espacio turístico, a partir de las etnografías realizadas a los más de 100 entrevistados para este libro.

Este trabajo propone analizar el problema del desarrollo turístico y su relación con las prácticas de apropiación territorial y la lucha por la conservación ambiental, tomando como eje de análisis el caso particular del Parque Nacional Tulum, localizado en Quintana Roo, México. Se trata de una disputa muy compleja pero podríamos decir en términos simples que se ha desarrollado como un enfrentamiento entre grupos movidos por intereses económicos que intentan desconocer la legalidad del parque para lograr importantes negocios a través de la construcción de complejos turísticos, mientras grupos ambientalistas y de la sociedad civil se han organizado para emprender la defensa del lugar, como parte de sus reivindicaciones para conservar el entorno natural en beneficio de la sociedad local.

The intersection of tourism and climate change has seen significant research over the past two decades, focusing particularly on issues of mitigation and adaptation in the global North. Research output has predominantly been centred on the Mediterranean and Nordic countries and number of localities in North-America. The global South has seen significantly less investigation, despite having significantly lower adaptive capacity to the impacts of climate change, and numerous countries with rapidly growing tourism sectors. The African continent specifically has seen appreciably less research than other countries in the global South, despite arguably having the lowest adaptive capacity and projections of severe impacts of climate change to the tourism sector from temperature increases, changes in precipitation volume and sea level rise. This paper therefore presents a review of the existing literature on adaptation strategies of tourism sectors and participants in African countries. The crucial argument of this paper is in highlighting the need for an increase in research into the threats of climate change to tourism in African countries, identifying future research trajectories. The development of such knowledge would assist in the development of adaptation and mitigation strategies for these most vulnerable tourism economies.

La Chiquitania se ubica en el oriente boliviano, localizada en el departamento de Santa Cruz, esta región se ha caracterizado por tener y poseer un legado cultural único, asociado con la participación e intervención de la Compañía de Jesús hace más de 300 años, ya que los jesuitas fueron los encargados de evangelizar y elaborar un modelo social denominado “misión o reducción” en territorios concernientes a la Audiencia de Charcas. Después de su expulsión, las construcciones fueron abandonadas más de 200 años, no obstante, en los años 70 se realizaron trabajos de restauración, y para 1990 las misiones jesuíticas de la Chiquitania fueron incluidas en la lista “Patrimonio Mundial” de la UNESCO, lo que las ha convertido en una imagen significativa para el turismo no sólo a nivel nacional, sino a una escala internacional por la cultura viva ofertada, representativa de la herencia de los misioneros jesuitas a los chiquitanos.

Así, este trabajo presenta que el turismo –de reciente implantación- dentro del circuito misional de la región de Chiquitos es de intereses especiales, a partir de la estructura, demanda y arreglo de los recursos existentes, debido a que este tipo de actividad no se relaciona con el turismo de masas, puesto que la persona que arriba a estos lugares demanda atributos particulares de lo que observará, por ejemplo, la arquitectura de cada una de las reducciones y conocer el festival de música renacentista y barroca organizado cada dos años.

El turismo es comúnmente presentado como una solución infalible al desarrollo del medio rural y a la conservación de los recursos naturales. Sin embargo esa visión carece de mirada crítica y el modelo se replica derivando en resultados controvertidos. El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar las características y condiciones preexistentes en un territorio rural para la incorporación del turismo rural comunitario (TRC) en un proceso de desarrollo local-regional, utilizando un enfoque sistémico, multiescalar y participativo. El trabajo se ubicó en la región del Bajo Balsas, Michoacán, dentro de la Reserva de la Biosfera Zicuirán Infiernillo. La metodología se basó en las premisas de la investigación acción cuyo modelo de intervención procura producir conocimiento sobre el objeto de estudio, el TRC, a la vez de promover la construcción de aprendizajes locales para mejorar las tomas de decisiones. Es así como esa tesis doctoral tuvo un doble propósito, social y académico.
En este trabajo el TRC fue concebido como parte integrante de un proceso de cambio social desde la base en el cual los individuos y las instituciones locales y colectivas tienen un papel central. En una primera etapa se identificaron las identidades productivas que caracterizan el área de estudio, mostrando la existencia de cinco perfiles socio productivos y culturales reconocidos desde adentro por los actores locales, lo que deriva en condiciones diferentes en cada caso para establecer las bases de una propuesta TRC. A partir de un análisis a nivel regional de las condiciones básicas para el TRC, el trabajo se centró a nivel de la comunidad y exploró, mediante una metodología participativa, los elementos preexistentes y construidos de la visión de los actores sociales de tres comunidades rurales sin experiencia previa en turismo. La transmisión de herramientas de análisis a nivel local permitió construir una visión local y colectiva sobre el turismo en comunidades con condiciones organizacionales, ambientales y socioculturales distintas. Finalmente se analizó el contexto regional institucional en el cual se inscribe este trabajo, integrando una visión externa y estableciendo recomendaciones a los actores locales. El trabajo concluyó sobre la necesidad de analizar antes de la introducción del TRC las condiciones preexistentes del territorio y particularmente las visiones locales de los actores involucrados que influyen directamente en la construcción del espacio turístico de un territorio rural. El trabajo sugirió además que el proceso de construcción de las propuestas de TRC, y los mecanismos que se generan a través de ellas, deben ser estudiados con mayor atención.

Le tourisme est promu au Mexique comme une solution au développement des territoires ruraux. Cependant, force est de constater que ce discours résulte d’une approche limitée et trompeuse des notions de développement, réduction de la pauvreté et de conservation des ressources naturelles. À partir d’une approche systémique, multiscalaire et participative, ce travail de recherche analyse les conditions d’un territoire pour l’introduction du tourisme rural communautaire (TRC) dans un processus de développement à échelle locale-régionale. Le TRC est conçu comme partie intégrante d’un processus de changement social depuis la base dans lequel les individus et les institutions collectives en sont le moteur. La méthodologie se situe dans le domaine de la recherche-action qui se base sur un modèle d’intervention capable à la fois de produire des connaissances sur l’objet de la recherche, le lien entre TRC et territoire, et de promouvoir la construction d’apprentissages pour améliorer les prises de décisions locales. Les résultats indiquent la nécessité d’analyser avant l’introduction d’initiatives de TRC les conditions pré existantes du territoire et des visions locales des acteurs concernés qui influent directement dans la construction de l’espace touristique. Ce travail suggère que le processus de construction d’une initiative de TRC et les mécanismes qui se créent doivent être étudiés avec plus d’attention.

An enthusiastic discourse about suitability of community-based tourism (CBT) has been promoted in Mexico as a way of revitalizing rural areas. Nevertheless, a review of experiences indicates that, in most cases, these have not shown the expected success. The objective of this research was to develop an ex-ante assessment in a rural area of tropical dry lands in Mexico where CBT has not been introduced yet, using a multi-scalar, systemic and community-based approach. The intervention focused on the paradigm of the action research and on the soft system methodology. This research aimed a double contribution, social and academic: building a process of cognitive construction and social learning that on the one hand allows the facilitator to use results to produce scientific knowledge, and on the other allows local people to gain new information adapted to their situation. Results showed the necessity to analyse before the introduction of any tourist activity the ex ante conditions of the territory and the local visions of concerned actors that influence directly the construction of a tourist space. This work suggest that the construction process of a CBT initiative and the mechanism that are created, must be studied with more attention.

Cities are now up for sale. They are a commercial product, each with its own distinct brand and image. Urban centres have been transformed into tourism destinations that compete with each other. It is essential for cultural tourism cities to construct a prestigious brand and a public image that shows them in the best possible light. These are the elements that attract visitors. Tourists choose the places to visit mainly on the basis of their perception of each destination's image and brand. However, these representations of cultural tourism are ultimately stereotypi-cal images, based on a partial and subjective selection of history and heritage. In this article, we study the process of construction of cultural tourism images in one of the Iberian Peninsula's main destinations-Toledo. The article also analyses visitors' perception of this public image and its influence when it comes to choosing a destination. The methodology used, after a literature review and compilation of information on Toledo's promotional image, is based on empirical analysis of surveys. The article demonstrates that Toledo has a stereotypical image and brand, based on a partial view of its history and the picturesque dimension of its heritage. It is this representation that attracts the vast majority of visitors to the city. On the other hand, the real city is disappearing, in terms of both the promotional image of Toledo, and in the perceptions of tourists and visitors. The stereotypical image and commercialisation of the city as a cultural tourism destination is now the prevailing force. A construção e perceção das imagens e marcas do turismo cultural. Um estudo de caso de Toledo (Espanha) Resumo As cidades hoje estão à venda. Elas são um produto comercial com uma marca e uma imagem. Os centros urbanos são destinos turísticos que competem entre si. Nesta matéria, ter uma imagem pública tão favorável quanto possível e ter uma marca de prestígio são questões es-senciais para as cidades turísticas culturais. Elas atraem visitantes. Estes escolhem os seus luga-res de viagem principalmente através da perceção que têm da imagem e da marca dos destinos. No entanto, essas representações do turismo cultural são estereótipos baseados numa seleção parcial e interessada da história e do património. Neste artigo, estudamos o processo de cons-trução de imagens turísticas culturais num dos principais destinos da Península Ibérica, Toledo. Da mesma forma, analisa-se a perceção dos visitantes dessa imagem pública e a sua influência na escolha de destino. A metodologia utilizada, após uma revisão da literatura e uma compila-ção de informações sobre a imagem promocional de Toledo, baseia-se num trabalho empírico através de inquéritos. Desde los orígenes de la humanidad, la espiritualidad ha sido importante para el desarrollo de las sociedades. Los pueblos manifiestan su culto a través de imágenes, creaciones artísticas y espacios naturales como montañas y lagos; en ellos se establece un vínculo entre el mundo material y el mundo espiritual que da como resultado la edificación de santuarios. En ocasiones, estas obras arquitectónicas son detonantes en la construcción de poblaciones y se vuelven sitos que aglomeran continuamente grandes cantidades de personas de manera temporal. En este sentido, más de la mitad de los turistas que anualmente visitan un centro religioso se dirigen a un santuario católico, entre las que destacan Basílicas como la de San Pedro en el Vaticano, Fátima en Portugal y Guadalupe en México, templos de renombre mundial.
En ese sentido, Guatemala es un país que cuenta con diversos recursos para el turismo, de índole natural y cultural, estos últimos asociados al sincretismo producto de la mezcla entre la religión católica y las costumbres indígenas. Ello se refleja en sus múltiples festividades y en santuarios como la Catedral en la Ciudad de Guatemala o la Basílica de Esquipulas; ubicada en la Ciudad-Santuario homónima al suroriente de Guatemala, esta última resguarda la imagen del Cristo Negro cuya importancia espiritual a nivel regional ha hecho que sea reconocida como la “Capital Centroamericana de la Fe” por lo que ha sido sede de diversos encuentros regionales de integración. Continuamente, la ciudad es visitada por miles de peregrinos y turistas, los cuales mueven los motores de la economía local y nacional al generar eslabonamientos hacia adelante y hacia atrás que reditúan en ingresos para la población; sin embargo, el alcance regional que posee el turismo religioso católico en este santuario ha sido poco estudiado pese a ser considerado el lugar sagrado más importante y el más visitado en Centroamérica. La fama del santuario se debe a las implicaciones históricas que hermanan a los países de la región que, a su vez, explican el sincretismo existente que hace que aviva las costumbres prehispánicas y coloniales en esta parte del continente. Los migrantes, por su parte, desempeñan otra labor importante puesto que llevan el culto hacia otros lugares, especialmente en las poblaciones que recorren en su trayecto hacia Estados Unidos.

This chapter argues that research into the impact of climate change on tourism requires a mixed-method approach globally, but particularly in South Africa due to the lack of quality databases that would provide the researcher with necessary information to conduct robust research.

At first glance, relating modern slavery to tourism might seem excessive and an exaggeration to what are seemingly unrelated concerns. While modern slavery practices in the global textiles, mining, agricultural, domestic services and sex industries have been on the receiving end of much critical research and mainstream commentary, the global tourism supply chain has not faced the same extent of investigation and critique. Even the UNWTO, the globe's tourism industry cheerleader, has so far avoided making such explicit linkages and has mostly celebrated the sector's potential to contribute to development, and in isolation to how this manifests in the global tourism supply chain. However, TUI the world's largest consolidated travel company has taken the lead on formally acknowledging the reality that modern slavery exists in the tourism supply chain with their Modern Slavery Statement. In their statement, TUI declares: "Modern slavery and its components of forced labour and human trafficking are of particular concern given their egregious nature and increasing prevalence. In this statement, we address how we seek to identify, mitigate, and prevent cases of modern slavery in our operations and our supply chain".

That tourism is inherently labor intensive, provides ideal conditions for potential transgressions that leverage human exploitation, especially concerning labor and human rights. Accordingly, this should signal to tourism geographers that the association between modern slavery practices and tourism presents a potentially rich seam for critical tourism geographies research.

El presente capítulo tiene como objetivo plantear la creciente relación entre movimientos sociales y turismo. En las últimas décadas, ciertos territorios han visto cómo un desarrollo turístico basado en el crecimiento ilimitado y
la masificación se ha enfrentado a duras críticas por parte de asociaciones y organizaciones locales. A pesar de no ser un fenómeno realmente novedoso, esta conflictiva relación ha recibido un extraordinario eco en los medios de
comunicación, los cuales han acabado generando un efecto amplificador.
Si bien hay una producción bibliográfica extensa sobre la categorización y evolución de los movimientos sociales, así como sobre las múltiples y posibles perspectivas de análisis del fenómeno turístico por separado, los estudios que relacionan ambos fenómenos son escasos y recientes.

Resumo | Este estudo buscou reconhecer os tipos de trabalho no turismo, segundo funções e qualificações, bem como analisar relações de trabalho quanto à remuneração e modo de contratação. A metodologia foi organizada em pesquisas bibliográficas e empíricas, no sentido da elaboração de um referencial teórico-conceitual e de uma apresentação de resultados. O referencial preliminar apresenta algumas características gerais sobre o trabalho, como a produção da maisvalia e a alienação do trabalhador, além de considerações sobre o trabalho e a reestruturação produtiva contemporânea.

This short essay is a contribution to a book edited by Lucia Tozzi and published as part of the Raumplan collective's exhibition at Milan's Campo gallery in the winter of 2020. It was published online in English and Italian by Dynamo Press. In the essay, I argue that tourism should be understood as a planning strategy with both an economic and ideological underpinning. Economically, I link the turn towards tourism to the growth and consolidation of global real estate capital. Ideologically, I argue that tourism is way of valuing the demands of one particular class of mobile urban figure (the tourist) over those of all others (the commuter, the immigrant, the refugee, the homeless person, or the unimposing traveler). If urban residents wish to reorient their cities away from touristification, social movements must imagine and fight for an alternative vision not only of their city, but the way it is planned.

Zengin bir kültürel mirasa sahip olan Mardin, gerek sahip olduğu tarihi,
kültürel ve doğal zenginlikleri, gerekse geçmiş yıllardan günümüze kadar ulaşan toplumsal değerlerinin özgünlüğünden dolayı yıllardır birçok film ve dizi yapımcısının tercih ettiği bir mekân olmuştur. Bu çalışmada, yerel halkın Mardin ilinde çekilen televizyon dizileri ve filmlerin ekonomik, kültürel, çevresel etkilerine ve Mardin turizmine katkısına yönelik algılarının belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmada veri toplama aracı olarak anket tekniği seçilmiş ve kolayda örnekleme yaklaşımı ile Mardin ilinde yaşayan 401 birey ile yüz yüze görüşülerek veriler elde edilmiştir. Elde edilen veriler, frekans analizleri, Mann-Whitney U ve Kruskall-Wallis testleri ile analiz edilmiştir. Araştırma bulgularına göre yöre halkının, Mardin ilinde çekilen dizi ve filmlerin, şehrin ekonomisine ve tanıtımına olumlu katkı sağlamakla beraber, kültürünün yanlış aktarılması, yaşam
tarzlarının abartılması ve dizilerin ekonomik rant amacıyla çekilmeleri gibi olumsuz algılara sahip oldukları gözlenmiştir.

El turismo astronómico es parte del turismo de intereses especiales, esta actividad tiene la particularidad de ser practicado en lugares muy puntuales en el mundo que reúnen características como latitud, altitud, clima, calidad de la atmósfera, que permiten la observación directa de la bóveda celeste. La región de Coquimbo, localizada en el Norte Chico de Chile, es un sitio privilegiado para la práctica del turismo astronómico, tanto por su posición en el globo terráqueo como por su clima árido dominante, a lo que se suma la disponibilidad de infraestructura de transporte y alojamiento, y la existencia de observatorios (científicos y turísticos). Este trabajo tiene como finalidad revelar la estructura territorial que ha conformado el turismo astronómico en esta parte de Chile, y expone la importancia del núcleo central en la actividad turística regional de la conurbación La Serena-Coquimbo.

Abstract

Astronomical tourism, a segment of the tourism of special interests, made its debut in the international arena just a couple of decades ago. This type of tourism can only be practiced in certain areas of the world where latitude, altitude, climate and the quality of atmosphere contribute to generate the natural conditions specifically needed to observe the celestial dome. The Norte Chico in Chile is a privileged region in this respect, since its relative location on Earth, the dominant dry climate, as well as the infrastructure available and accessibility to observatories (scientific or otherwise) has given way to the expansion of astronomical tourism in several locations within the Coquimbo region, a part of Norte Chico. This paper deals with the issue of territorial structure, a geographical fundamental concept, useful to explaining the expansion of astronomical tourism in this part of Chile. In doing so, nuclei, flows and surfaces created by this type of tourism economy are revealed.
