This book uses sports as a metaphor for research methods. It focuses on how to use and build frameworks for empirical research. The frameworks are analogous to a "play", which is connected to a unique purpose and directs the movement of players during the game. Examples from award winning student research support the chapters that introduce 4 different conceptual frameworks. Before a player can enter the game, he or she should be in shape and understand the rules. Effective teams have systems in place that help their players achieve top physical abilities. Likewise, student scholars need systems in place to ensure they have the necessary skills and preparation to conceptualize and write a strong paper. To do this, it is helpful to bring project management skills to the task of writing a paper. A project management system organizing a scholar's time, materials and Ideas is presented. The book is written using John Dewey and Charles Sanders Pierce's philosophy of science and theory of inquiry.

Assessment of impacts from wild ungulates on forest regeneration – comparison of different wildlife-impact monitoring methods (“WEM method comparison”). Seven monitoring methods used in Austria for the assessment of wildlife impacts (done by ungulates) on forest regeneration were compared by means of several criteria and subjected to a SWOT analysis. For three of these methods a comparative test occurred in two investigation areas. The find-ings enable an optimized application of the methods, a correct interpretation of the results, and an improvement of the procedures.

"Doctrinal and Non-Doctrinal Methods of Legal Research " for Research Method & Legal Writing.
Research means repeated search for something, to find out some different new things or something special knowledge in the existing facts. Legal research is any systematic study for that specific methodology which should be carried out. Method is the way of doing something and Methodology is the science of a particular subject. There are different methods of research that may be applicable in legal research. Usually legal research is divided into Doctrinal and Non-Doctrinal research.
This paper discussed  Doctrinal (Professors)  and  Non-doctrinal (Lawyers or Empirical) Methods of Research to show The  Legal Fraternity how to  write  with understanding regarding the Merits, Demerits, and the Comparisons  between  doctrinal  and  non-doctrinal  legal research. Thus, the combination of methodologies, i.e., a mixed method using ideological,social,and legal,can work together to achieve a better understanding of the law.

Within this article we use the metaphor of the “Research Onion” (Saunders et al., 2012: 128) to illustrate how these final elements (the core of the research onion) need to be considered in relation to other design elements (the outer layers of the research onion).  It is the researcher’s understandings and associated decisions in relation to these outer layers that provide the context and boundaries within which data collection techniques and analysis procedures will be selected.

This article aims to contribute to recent debates on research methods in public administration by examining the use of quantitative methods in public administration research. We analyzed 1,605 articles published between 2001-2010 in four leading journals: JPART, PAR, Governance and PA. Results show that whereas qualitative methods are still predominant compared to quantitative methods (56 versus 44 percent), the field is becoming increasingly quantitative. Of quantitative methods used, surveys are most dominant, while a combination of methods is used far less often. In general, very few studies use a mixed methods design. As to the areas of research, we found that the use of quantitative methods is unequally distributed; some subfields (public management) use quantitative methods more often than others (policy and politics), and some journals (JPART, PA) publish articles on quantitative research more than others (Governance). Implications for public administration research are discussed.

Category-specific disorders are perhaps the archetypal example of domain-specificity -being typically defined by the presence of dissociations between living and nonliving naming ability in people following neurological damage. The methods adopted to quantify naming across categories are therefore pivotal since they provide the criterion for defining whether patients have a category effect and necessarily influence the subsequent direction and the interpretation of testing. This paper highlights a series of methodological concerns relating to how we measure and define category (or any) dissociations. These include the common failure to include control data or the use of control data that is inappropriate e.g. at ceiling, unmatched. A review of past cases shows that the overwhelming majority suffers from these problems and therefore challenges conclusions about the purported empirical demonstrations of dissociations and double dissociations in the category specific literature. This is not a refutation of category deficits, but skepticism about the current existence of any convincing empirical demonstrations of category specific double dissociations. As a potential solution, certain minimal criteria are proposed that might aid with the attempt to document category effects that are more methodologically convincing.

Offene Methoden in der Sicherheitsforschung. Zur empirischen Kritik von Forschungsergebnissen Wenn es um die Frage nach der Einschätzung von Sicherheit durch die Bevölkerung geht, besitzt die von dem Versicherungskonzern R+V in Auftrag gegebene Langzeitstudie über die " Ängste der Deutschen " eine Art Deutungsmonopol. In einer Pressemitteilung wird für das Jahr 2010 folgendes festgestellt: " Wirtschaftskrise, Umweltkatastrophen, Parteiengezänk und leere Sozialkassen treiben die Sorgen der Deutschen auf Spitzenwerte… Insgesamt sind die Ängste im Vergleich zum Vorjahr deutlich gestiegen und erreichen erstmals seit 2005 wieder ein Höchstniveau. " (Pressemitteilung R+V, Berlin, 9. September 2010) Die von R+V berichteten Ergebnisse erwecken den Eindruck, dass sich die Menschen in Deutschland in einem extrem unsicheren Land sehen: 68 % fürchten steigende Lebenshaltungskosten, 67 % eine schlechte Wirtschaftslage, 64 % haben Angst vor Naturkatastrophen und sogar 42 % befürchten einen Krieg mit deutscher Beteiligung. Aber was bedeuten solche Ergebnisse? Sind wir " wirklich " ein so unsicheres Land? Oder sind wir Deutsche besonders anfällig für Ängste? Der Begriff " German‐Angst " ist ja mittlerweile global verbreitet. Dann fällt auch folgendes auf: Einerseits wird in diesen Studien berichtet, dass die Sorgen der Deutschen wieder einmal Spitzenwerte erreicht haben. Andererseits ist aber verwunderlich, dass die Deutschen sich über bestimmte Dinge offenbar gar keine Sorgen machen: Sie hatten 2010 z.B. keine Furcht vor technischen Großunfällen wie Atomunglücke; sie waren unbeeindruckt von sozialer Ungleichheit und auch rechtsextremistische Gewalttaten machten ihnen – wenn man von diesen Studien ausgeht – keine Sorgen. " Was für ein merkwürdiges Land " muss man denken. Aber die Deutschen sind vielleicht weniger seltsam als es diese Ergebnisse vermuten lassen. Es könnte ja sein, dass dieses eigenartige Ergebnis ganz einfach durch die verwendeten Methoden erklärbar ist. Die von R+V berichteten Ängste kommen ja schlicht dadurch zustande, dass den Befragten eine entsprechende Liste vorgelegt wurde. Und die fehlenden Ängste lassen sich ganz einfach damit erklären, dass diese Ängste auf der Liste fehlten. Wie würde nun das Ergebnis aussehen, wenn man keine Liste vorgibt, wenn eine Studie mit offenen Methoden durchgeführt wird? Das wollten wir mit unserem Projekt herausfinden: ob es sinnvoll und möglich ist, Sicherheitswahrnehmungen in einer ganz anderen Weise zu erforschen. 1 Die hier berichteten Ergebnisse stammen aus einem Forschungsprojekt, das vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) gefördert wurde. Evidence-based practice has become an important approach to social work practice. This paper highlights some of the ethical dilemmas which may be implicated by this approach, and encourages social workers and social work researchers to carefully consider these potential quandaries.

In the context of increased scrutiny of the methods in forensic sciences, it is essential to ensure that the approaches used in forensic taphonomy to measure decomposition and estimate the postmortem interval are underpinned by robust evidence-based data. Digital photographs are an important source of documentation in forensic taphonomic investigations but the suitability of the current approaches for photographs, rather than real-time remains, is poorly studied which can undermine accurate forensic conclusions. The present study aimed to investigate the suitability of 2D colour digital photographs for evaluating decomposition of exposed human analogues (Sus scrofa domesticus) in a tropical savanna environment (Hawaii), using two published scoring methods; Megyesi et al., 2005 and Keough et al., 2017. It is the purpose of this paper to make explicit the methodology (the theory of the methods) by which we conducted research for an Economic and Social Research Council-funded research project on the relationship of values to value. Specifically, we wanted to study the imperative of Facebook to monetize social relationships, what happens when one of our significant forms of communication is driven by the search for profit, by the logic of capital. We therefore wanted to ‘get inside’ and understand what capital’s new lines of flight, informationally driven models of economic expansion, do to social relations. Taking up the challenge to develop methods appropriate to the challenges of ‘big data’, we applied four different methods to investigate the interface that is Facebook: we designed custom software tools, generated an online survey, developed data
visualizations, and conducted interviews with participants to discuss their understandings of our analysis. We used Lefebvre’s [(2004).

This paper describes a quantitative method of measurement and evaluation of the information provided by hotel websites. It aims to measure the richness of specific and comprehensive information dimensions, which as a whole constitute the information services offered through the web. Data from an extended web search along with responses of hotel managers regarding the importance of the offered information services are used. A conceptual model that describes the hotel web sites information features is used in order to summarize the data and to present the overall information volume offered. The applied model combines seven data dimensions: facilities information, customer contact information, reservation and prices information, surrounding area information, management of the web site, company information and communication. O conceito de motricidade concebe um corpo de ação contínua e significante, um corpo vivo de/em movimento intencional e transcendente para/com o mundo e para/com os outros. Alinhado a este conceito, a ecomotricidade abrange este corpo vivo interagindo na/com a natureza (humano-e-não-humano) nos momentos em que esta interação é lúdica (sendo o prazer ou alegria/felicidade o que dá sentido à experiência vivida) e ecológica (ecosomaestética-ambientalmente ética-ecopolítica). Como manifestação que envolve a percepção espontânea e momentânea do sujeito envolvido na experiência, instrumentos, técnicas e métodos voltados para a análise indutiva e dedutiva a partir de bases cartesianas, em grande parte, se mostram falhos diante das realidades investigadas em pesquisas envolvendo contextos da ecomotricidade. Justificado por esse problema, o objetivo central desse projeto foi a investigação e experimentação de instrumentos, técnicas e métodos buscando elaborar metodologias adequadas/adaptadas aos objetivos da pesquisa em ecomotricidade. Havendo a necessidade de delimitação do campo de estudos, compreendendo a vasta produção científica relacionada a tipos de instrumentos, técnicas e métodos investigativos, o projeto abordou, especificamente, os “estudos em movimento” (mobile studies), modalidade que vem ganhando destaque no campo de pesquisa em educação ambiental. A pesquisa focou nas principais obras que descrevem os instrumentos, técnicas e métodos dos estudos em movimento, assim como publicações relacionadas a pesquisas que utilizaram essa modalidade metodológica.

Social work educators have found a variety of experiential and creative methods to be valuable aids in teaching culturally sensitive social work practice. By utilizing experiential/creative methods as tools of self-reflection, faculty can help students develop their "professional use of self" for practice with diverse populations. This paper presents a development in qualitative research, the research poem, which has powerful implications for teaching culturally sensitive social work. It explores how the research poem was has been used as a vehicle for teaching students culturally sensitive social work practice with Native Americans.

In der Soziologie wird vermehrt für eine Verwendung von Labor-und Feldexperimenten plädiert. Bis heute stößt die experimentelle Methode aber auf ein gewisses Unbehagen und gehört auch weiterhin nicht zu den Standard-verfahren der empirischen Sozialforschung. Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrags ist es, verzerrende soziale Faktoren experimenteller Laborsettings zu benennen und kon-struktiv-kritisch zu besprechen. Dazu wird auf Befunde aus eigenen Verteilungsex-perimenten (n=213) in Kombination mit anschließenden problemzentrierten Interviews mit Teilnehmenden (n=39) zurückgegriffen. Ursprünglich wurden die Interviews in das experimentelle Setting integriert, um Aufschluss über die zugrundelie-genden Entscheidungsstrukturen der beteiligten Experimentteilnehmer*innen zu gewinnen. Unter anderem wurden Teilnehmer*innen nach ihren persönlichen Erfahrungen mit Experimenten und ihren Teilnahmemotiven befragt. Die Ergeb-nisse der qualitativen Befragung weisen auf ein in der Literatur bisher vernachlässig-tes Problem hin: So zeigen unsere Interviews neben dem in der Literatur antizipier-ten strategisch-nutzenmaximierenden Typen noch weitere Teilnehmertypologien, die wir als ,Interessierte Forscher' und ,Kritische Experten' bezeichnet haben. Wäh-rend für den nutzenmaximierenden Typus ,Homo Oeconomicus' die zentrale Teil-nahmemotivation die monetären Anreize darstellt, spielen für die ,Interessierten Forscher' erste Erfahrungen mit Experimenten aus Fachinteresse eine zentrale Rolle. Die ,Kritischen Experten' schließlich nutzen die Experimentteilnahme um ihr eige-nes Handeln in spezifischen Situationen kritisch zu hinterfragen und eigene Hand-lungsentscheidungen zu reflektieren. Da Experimente in der Regel mit Studieren-den von Universitäten durchgeführt werden, stellen diese Befunde eine weitrei-chende Herausforderung für die experimentelle Sozialforschung dar und sollten als solche auch in zukünftige konzeptionelle Überlegungen aufgenommen werden.

We need, I argue, racial methodologies for our research in composition studies but more particularly writing assessment. An attention to the ways race functions in and is produced by our research methods is absent in most of the published research in writing assessment. To illustrate, I compare three writing assessment research projects, an early quantitative one on writing placement scores by Edward M. White and Leon Tomas that considers race, a recent qualitative project by Cathy Spidell and William H. Thelin that considers student reactions to grading contracts, and the quantitative portion of a research project I currently conduct on grading contracts. !en I suggest ways that racial methodologies are needed and may be used in future research.

The aims of the learning sciences (LS) are to understand the nature of learning from
a broad range of perspectives, and to shape the ways that learning environments
and resources are designed and used. LS incorporates both systemic and elemental
approaches to investigating questions about learning, as a complement to the
primarily elemental approach emphasized in cognitive science research. Thus, its
greatest potential is in the integration of systemic and elemental perspectives.
Four major themes are central. First, research in LS attempts to bridge the divide
between research and practice. Second, research in LS is motivated by limitations
of theories of learning and cognition for specifying instruction. Third, research
in LS embraces the importance of analyzing and assessing complex interventions
through both experimental and design-based research. Fourth, research in LS
emphasizes the learning and behavior of the individual in interaction with the
physical, social, and culturalworld, aswell aswith semiotic and technical resources.
Research in LS can be conceptualized along a continuum of time scales, from the
more microscopic to the more macroscopic. The time-scale framework illustrates
how disparate research traditions and research methods can function within a
unifying framework for the study of learning and complex behavior. The effort to
‘scale-up’ from more elemental findings to more complex, authentic settings has
been generative for LS, but faces serious challenges. There is an alternate route to
establishing a cumulative scientific knowledge base, namely, ‘scaling down’ from
more complex, ecologically valid levels to more elemental levels. Studies of basic
learning processes, framed in the context of the larger system, are well positioned
to support impact in authentic settings.

This paper is an integration of paradox theory and the paradoxical lens into strengths regulation as an alternative way to enable optimal performance. Various conceptualizations around strengths, talents, and traits are discussed to provide a sound theoretical framework. The nature and characteristics of strengths, as well as its ‘dark side,’ are likewise elaborated to explain the use of various strengths regulations, their features and limitations. The central theme of the paper is its introduction of a novel approach called “paradoxical strengths regulation,” where an old concept such as paradox finds a new way of application to the science of positive psychology. The use of paradoxical strengths regulation can help advance positive psychology’s ultimate goal of contributing to optimal human functioning.

In the International School of London (ISL) Qatar, we have been exploring different approaches to assessment as a crucial element of learning. We have identified some methods and tools that teachers might use. This case study will investigate the phenomenon and processes of assessment in the context in which the school finds itself now. The aim of the case study will be to see if there is a common understanding of the concept of assessment and to help guide further development of our overall approach to assessment. We hope our findings we also be useful to other academics if they can relate to our findings, and apply them as they navigate the complexities of modern assessment in their own schools. My own background affects the choice of topic and approach, having done research on post-modernism and assessment.

For the past twenty years, archaeometallurgy has developed substantially, as did the archaeometry of archaeological metals. Regarding the complexity of the understanding, during the excavations, of the sites, structures and data related to ancient metallurgic techniques, experimentation may be an appropriate way of generating new methodologies or interpretations. It can be construed as an effective mean for testing or validating the artefacts and the technical devices. The conference aims at taking stock of the inputs and limits of experimentation in these fields.

The first day will be devoted to pharaonic Egypt and the major steps in antique metallurgy, from extraction to final production. Through multidisciplinary speeches on case studies about European an African archaeology, and through workshop sessions, the second day will be more specifically dedicated to the epistemology of experimental archaeology.

Il case study è una delle etichette più utilizzate per definire e intitolare ricerche e pubblicazioni nelle scienze sociali. Ciononostante, esso rappresenta di fatto un "non tema" della metodologia sociologica. Il volume si propone di colmare tale lacuna, ricostruendo e analizzando il percorso di sviluppo che questo approccio ha avuto sino ad oggi nel vasto panorama della ricerca sociale. Nato nella Scuola sociologica di Chicago e oggetto di dibattito tra sostenitori di metodi quantitativi e di metodi qualitativi fino agli anni Quaranta del secolo scorso, in seguito ha vissuto una "eclissi" della discussione metodologica nei suoi riguardi. Le differenti visioni che negli ultimi anni si sono affermate in altre discipline, come le scienze politiche e dell'educazione, pongono, tuttavia, la necessità di riflettere su una sintesi che si possa adattare anche alla ricerca sociologica. Che cosa è dunque un case study? Come e perché fare un'indagine di questo tipo? Qual è la sua specificità e in che cosa si distingue da altri approcci di ricerca empirica? Nel rispondere a queste domande, il libro conduce il lettore in un percorso che prende in esame tutti gli aspetti-storici, epistemologici, tecnici, applicativi-chiarendo, alla luce della ormai vasta letteratura internazionale sul tema, le peculiarità del case study, le questioni rimaste ancora irrisolte nel dibattito metodologico e le tendenze più recenti che lo vedono collocarsi tra i mixed methods.
