Coat of Arms

This paper suggests a journey through the history of the Lithuanian heraldry from the 15th century until nowadays in searching fantastic creatures such as Centaur, Griffin, Two-headed Eagle, Unicorn etc. Some of these creatures were sporadical and some of them played a significant role in the aristocratic heraldry during the period of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania or appeared in the state and civic heraldry of Lithuania as the main charges or supporters. Fantastic/mythical elements are the one group of more than ten groups of the motives in creating coats of arms nowadays. The fusion of two animals or one animal and one plant etc. into one fantastic being is praiseworthy in the contemporary Lithuanian heraldry when it is decided to create civic coat of arms using fantastic elements. The idea of using fantastic creatures in the heraldry of Lithuania persists almost six centuries but the ways how these fruits of human imagination came to the various coats of arms are different. Historical, political and cultural context shaped the function and meaning of such heraldry over the years making interesting stories.

The contribution left by Luigi Staibano to the local history of the Amalfi coast is the main theme of this paper. In the past his works were not appreciated but today we can affirm the value of his micro-historical researches as a container of interesting antropological suggestions about these lands. He was born into a wealthy family of lawyers and he lived between Maiori and Salerno during the second half of 19th century. Staibano was much more than a 'failed historian', he was a man of his time. The century of romanticism and Italian national unification influenced his works. Furthermore, the observation of his family's coat of arm is also an important element in order to understand his behavior and point of view as a member of a certain community.

This was a first presentation of Greek coats-of-arms as recorded at the then unpublished Codex No. 482 in the Old Archives of the University of Padua, Italy (17th -18th centuries).  Mostly belonging to students of the "Natione Ultramarina" (the Overseas Nation) i.e. the Venetian Greek-Speaking Levant, this heraldic source comprises arms from other parts of the then Greek-Speaking world as well.

Mstislavas Dobužinskis (1875-1957) almost became the author of the official Lithuanian state coat of arms and the flag. Despite his considerable heraldic and vexillological legacy, today, undeservedly, he is forgotten. Dobužinskis is known now only to a small group of experts and those interested in the activities of the artist. The analysis of Dobužinskis’s heraldic and vexillological heritage, its scale and quality, demonstrates that he is one of the most prominent figures in the history of Lithuanian heraldry. Looking from today’s perspective, in many cases, the artist’s works (both state symbols and the works of applied heraldry) are not exemplary from the heraldic point of view. Nevertheless one can argue that in the context of the interwar period, they are probably the best attempts. One cannot overestimate Dobužinskis perfectionist striving to improve the designs, his relentless enthusiasm to dig deep into the history of the Lithuanian heraldry, to publish the results of the research, to seek additional knowledge, and to work diligently. His efforts appear even more significant given his multicultural origin and self-awareness. Today we can rejoice at the fact that we have a significant heraldic treasure of the interwar period, most of which is composed of Dobužinskis’s works, characterized by historical substantiation, originality, and interesting solutions.

The  County    branch    of  the  National    Archives    in  Sibiu  holds  an impressive  collection  of medieval  documents.  Amongst  them,  there  is a high  number with  hanging  seal.  The latter  are hanging  either from  a small parchment  bit or from a string.  Only  a small  percent  of  these  shows  an  attached  double  royal  seal.  Our paper  aims to describe  and analyze  these  royal  seals  within  the County  branch  of the National  Archives  in  Sibiu.  We  managed  to  identify  7 hanging  great  royal  seals issued  by jive  different  Hungarian  kings:  Otto  of Bavaria  (1),  Mary  of Anjou  (1), Sigismund    of  Luxembourg    (3),  Matthias  Corvinus  (1)  and  Vladislaus  II.  (1).  The chronology  of these  seals  spans  over  the period  of two centuries,  between  the jirst decade  of  the  14th one  up  until  the  second    decade  of  the  16th one.  Through photographic units,  we  are  able  to  describe  the  seals  both from  the perspective    of their legend,  as well  as their  decorations  and visible  heraldic  symbols.  We shall  also try  to correlate  the heraldic  coat  of arms  represented  on these  seals  with  chronicles and other visual  sources  depicting  them.

The Quincy lineage changed its coat of arms at the beginning of the Thirteenth Century, when Saer IV became earl of Winchester: the fess and lambel were abandoned in favor of seven mascles. This major change is probably due to the title gained by Saer de Quincy. The seven mascles were engraved very quickly on Saer’s new seal matrices and his wife’s, Margaret de Beaumont. Their descendants have kept using it for centuries, even if the title of Winchester had disappeared quickly after the death of Saer’s son, Roger, constable of Scotland.
The new blazon of the Quincy was sometimes used as proof of Briton origins, if one considers the coat of arms of the Rohan family, similar in its heraldic figures and colors. However, no other elements give indication of any familial or political alliance between the Quincy and the Rohan lineages. On the other hand, diplomatic mentions and feudal relationships tend to point towards the french Flanders, especially Cuinchy. Another flamish location could eventually be mentioned: Cuincy, whose lords wore a lambel on their shields. But, here again, this coat of arms isn’t proof enough of a familial link between the lords of Cuincy and the Quincys, even if the fess on Saer’s first blazon – instead of the lambel – could be considered as a brisure, just like the one on the coat of arms of his cousin Robert FitzWalter.

Известны три картины такого рода, а также гравюра, до нас не дошедшая, созданная в Москве в 1689 г. Автором гравюры был Лев или Александр Тарасевич (не исключено, что Александр Тарасевич и Лев Тарасевич-это одно и то же лицо, выступавшее под двумя именами); картины, по-видимому, воспроизводили гравюру. Это композиция западного происхождения: образцом для нее явилось изображение Леопольда І, императора Священной Римской империи. Вместе с тем в русском контексте портрет царевны должен был восприниматься как модификация российского герба, где традиционно в центре двуглавого орла находилось изображение монарха. Есть основания предполагать, что эти портреты были предназначены для готовящейся коронации Софьи Алексеевны 1 сентября 1689 г.

Ciechanów is one of the medieval towns of northern Mazovia. The town displays on its coat of arms the figure of St. Peter. However establishing the exact history of the town and genesis of the coat of arms of Ciechanów is not without some difficulties. There is furthermore a lack in addition of both documents and the seal of Ciechanów from the early Middle Ages.

El uso de la heráldica en Galicia se inicia a título personal como identificación del caballero, cubierto por su armadura, y sólo a partir del siglo XII comenzará a hacerse hereditario con el objeto de conservar el recuerdo de la procedencia de un origen común. El blasón junto con el apellido se convierte en el elemento identificador de un linaje, entendiendo el linaje como el conjunto de consanguíneos que proceden de un tronco común. De ahí que sea por varonía como se transmitan las armerías; es por ello que la mayoría de las Casas Infanzonas portaban en su escudo el cuartel de su varonía, cuyo uso estaba reservado a los miembros de dicho linaje, tanto los pertenecientes a la rama troncal del mismo como a las diferentes ramas colaterales que se habían ido desgajando a lo largo de las generaciones; mas en todo momento predominarán los escudos agnaticios, si bien sólo las Grandes Casas utilizarán en un principio el escudo cuartelado en los que se combinarán varias armerías, a fin de mostrar la importancia de los diversos enlaces contraídos, algunos de ellos procedentes del propio tronco real. A partir del siglo XVI, por influencia castellana, la mayoría de los títulos del reino cuartelarán sus escudos, lo que no tardará en extenderse al resto de los infanzones, conforme se fue imponiendo la necesidad de las probanzas como requisito previo para ingresar en las Órdenes Militares, los Colegios Mayores y otros institutos reservados a la nobleza. Así, un escudo cuartelado mostraba orgullosamente que su titular era noble por sus cuatro costados.

Schrifttumsliste zur deutschen Nobilität für die Erscheinungsjahre 1500 bis 1999 "Bei der ungeheuren Menge von literarischen Erzeugnissen jeder Art, welche jährlich zu vielen Tausenden sich vermehrt, ist es dahin gekommen, daß man in der Literatur sozusagen den Wald vor Bäumen nicht sieht! Der Gelehrte muß ein Drittel der Zeit, die er nachher auf das Durchstudieren der ihm nötigen Werke wendet, vorher mühselig verbrauchen, um sich über diese Werke Nachweis zu verschaffen." Dieser leidgeplagte Ruf eines Forschers, abgedruckt in der Zeitung für den deutschen Adel (1840-1844), stammt zwar aus dem Jahre 1840, er gilt aber bis zur heutigen Zeit. Denn trotz des multimedialen Zeitalters erscheinen so viele Bücher wie noch nie. Da sind zuverlässige Wegweiser zur Literatur eines speziellen Fachgebietes gesuchte Werke. Was bietet die Bibliographie? Sie erschließt-erstmals in diesem Umfang-Aufsätze aus vielen heute nur noch schwer ermittelbaren Periodika ebenso wie Zeitungsartikel und selbständig erschienene Werke von der Erfindung des Buchdrucks bis in die Gegenwart, nennt auch die jüngst erschienenen ersten CD-ROMs zum Thema "Deutscher Adel vom Mittelalter bis zur Jetztzeit". Ferner wurden alle relevanten Artikel aus sämtlichen Jahrgängen des Deutschen Adelsblattes für den Zeitraum 1833 bis 1999 per Autopsie aufgenommen! Nicht enthalten ist dagegen Literartur zu einzelnen Familien oder Personen des Adels. Für wen ist die Bibliographie gedacht? Sie wurde erstellt für alle, die sich in irgendweiner Weise mit dem deutschen Adel als Wissenschaftler, Studenten, Schüler oder Laien befassen. Deshalb sind sowohl Historiker, Sozial-, Staats-und Rechtswissenschaftler, als auch Genealogen, Seminar-, Staats-und Landesbibliotheken, Forschungsinstitutionen und Universitäten die Zielgruppe. Namentlich ist die Bibliographie auf die Bedürfnisse von Multiplikatoren des Bildungs-und Forschungswesens zugeschnitten. Einheitliche Literaturerfassung und umfangreiche Register ermöglichen einen effektiven Zugriff auf zum Teil nur an sehr entlegener Stelle veröffentlichte Literatur, die sonst nur unter immensem Zeitaufwand ermittelbar wäre. noch besser recherchierbar ist die Printversion, da in ihr zusätzlich Rergister mit Synonymen erarbeitet wurden. Systematik der Bibliographie Diese Bibliographie umfaßt das Schrifttum deutscher Zunge in bibliographischer, rechtlicher, soziologischer, gesellschaftlicher, kultureller, militärischer, geographischer und mehrerer anderer Hinsicht, daneben aber auch einige ausgewählte wichtige auslandssprachige Werke. Aufgenommen wurden Publikationen, die sich mit dem Adel als Stand im weitesten Sinne beschäftigen. Es handelt sich dabei um Schriften seit Erfindung des Buchdrucks, so daß seltene und alte Drucke aus dem 16.Jahrhundert genauso aufgeführt werden wie die erst 1997 erschienene Compactdisc zum höheren deutschen Adel oder diverse Mikroformen wie Filme und Fiches. Obgleich der Titel nur den Zeitraum 1200-1999 nennt, wurden auch Aufsätze mit aufgenommen, die das Thema "Adel"-in der jeweiligen Definition des Verfassers solcher Artikel-in der Ur-und Frühgeschichte behandeln; dabei handelt es sich meist um Schrifttum zu vorzeitlichen Funden von Adelsgräbern. Nicht enthalten ist hingegen Literatur zu einzelnen Familien oder Personen, auch keine Biographien und keine Familiengeschichten! Einzelne Personen werden nur dann erwähnt, wenn "Enthält"-Angaben aufgeführt werden und sie für den Adel eine allgemine Bedeutung erlangt haben. Dies ist beispielsweise der Fall bei einzelnen hervorragenden adeligen Künstlern, die in Titeln wie "Der Adel in der Kunst" genannt wurden. Nicht aufgenommen wurden weiterhin Hinweise auf Veranstaltungen von Gruppen der Landesabteilungen der Deutschen Adelsgenossenschaft (DAG) von 1883 bis 1956 bzw. der landschaftlichen Adelsvereinigungen innerhalb der Vereinigung der Deutschen Adelsverbände (VdDA) von 1956 bis zur Gegenwart. Eine Ausnahme hiervon wurde nur gemacht, wenn diese Tagungen adelsthematisch reiches Material enthielten und Texte zu Vorträgen brachten, in denen Adelskundliches erörtert wurde. Nachweise zu Tagungen und Veranstaltungen von Adelskorporationen werden seit einigen Jahren sukzessive vom Institut Deutsche Adelsforschung erfaßt und sind für die Jahre 1945 bis 1959 im "Deutschen Adelsalmanach" veröffentlicht worden. Die vorliegende Schrifttumsliste eignet sich daher nur zu bestimmten Recherchen, während für spezielle Fragen nach Einzelfamilien andere Werke der Literatur als Hilfsmittel heranzuziehen sind. In einer Zeit, da unkommentierte, schwerpunktlose und rechnergenerierte Bibliographien den Markt dominieren, wird der Leser dankbar sein für diesen "intelligenten" Literaturbericht, der weit über die einfache Aufzählung von Literatur hinausgreift. In oft zeitraubender Kleinarbeit wurden die Quellen vom Verfasser fast vollständig selbst gesichtet, außerdem die Bibliographie mit vier Besonderheiten ausgestattet, die in dieser Kombination in bisher keiner Schrifttumsliste zu finden sind! Gelegentlich bereitete die Abgrenzung gewisser Themenbereiche Schwierigkeiten. Hier mußten vom Verfasser Entscheidungen getroffen werden über die Aufnahme oder Nichtaufnahme von Titeln. So enthält die Rubrik "Adel, Kultur und Bildung" auch typische Romane zum Adel, Stellungnahmen von Dichtern und Staatsmännern zum Adel und behandelt Fragen der adeligen Pädagogik vom Mittelalter bis zur Jetztzeit-auch wenn das Wort "Adel" nicht immer im Titel vorkommt. Im Bereich "Die Edelfrau" wurden weniger Aphorismen nach dem Motto "Junge Fürstinnen sind zuweilen in andern Umständen-in andern als ihr Land" aufgenommen, sondern vielmehr Veröffentlichungen, die sich speziell mit dem Zusammenhang "Weiblicher Adel" beschäftigen.

Сва је српска древна символика у знаку распећа нашег народног на раскршћу светова. Христоцентрична и крстоцентрична је и на мистичан начин осликава наш повесни ход по мукама, али и благочестиво успињање Богу Правде по Речи Господњој: «Али који се надају Господу, добијају нову снагу, подижу се на крилима као орлови, трче и не сустају, ходе и не заморе се» (Ис. 40, 31). Стога је и непретенциозна намера овог скромног рада да, кроз речи и слику, обавести, макар у основним цртама, и мотивише на даље истраживање по богатим ризницама наше заједничке баштине и оне, који нису детаљније упућени у тајне српских грбова, застава и химни. Његова је ненаметљива намера да заинтересује за даље созерцање сопственог наслеђа и оне, који нису до сада били посвећеницима ових, помало мистичних знања. Језик символа и оплемењујућа порука, коју они преносе српским грбом, заставом и химном, могу нам бити од неслућене ползе на нашем путу остваривања нашег народног завета и одговарања изазову времена данашњег, као што је била и пре небројених столећа и као што ће бити до испуњења тог нашег призива у Есхатону.

A partir du milieu du XIIIe siècle, l'art occidental est saturé d'images héraldiques au point d'être marqué, à la fin du Moyen Âge, par une véritable "héraldisation" - l'application des principes chromatiques et graphiques du Blason - des grands courants stylistiques. Et pourtant l'intérêt des historiens de l'art pour le sujet est très récent. Il s'est souvent focalisé sur des questions d'identification et de datation sans se pencher plus avant sur les questions proprement artistiques ou esthétiques. Qu'est-ce qui caractérise une image héraldique, à l'origine du système et au fur et à mesure de ses évolutions ? La représentation héraldique est-elle une œuvre d'art ? Qui sont les auteurs de ces milliers d'images qui nous ont été conservées ? S'agit-il d'artistes, d'artisans spécialisés ? Quelles sont finalement les conditions nécessaires à la réalisation d'une "bonne" image héraldique au Moyen Âge ?

During the 20th and early 21st centuries, a good number of articles were published, the authors of which had expressed their ideas about the Byzantine origin of the Golden Horde double-headed eagle, as well as borrowing a similar Russian symbol from the Golden Horde (resp. Chingizid) set of emblems. Coins of the Ulus of Juchi, Byzance and some oriental dynasties were used as evidence therefor. The present article deals with the analysis of the numismatic heritage of the Juchids, Seljuqs of Rum, Ilkhans and some Turkish beyliks, revealing the fallacy in the conclusions of supporters of both versions. It has been shown that the «double-headed eagle» emblem had first emerged on the contemporary coins of the eastern part of Asia Minor, from which it would spread throughout the Crimean peninsula, and only then it penetrated into the Golden Horde coin production. The numismatic evidence, in fact, provides no data for eliminating the Russian coat of arms from the images on the Juchid copper coins.

RESUMEN: La heráldica fue un lenguaje visual que se consolidó como la manera más universal de mostrar el poder real, eclesiástico y, esencialmente, nobiliario en Europa durante siglos. Su uso estaba reservado legalmente solo para las clases privilegiadas, pero un exhaustivo rastreo familiar nos muestra cómo numerosos escudos de armas que se exhibieron en palacios o capillas pertenecían a familias de origen judío o ricos mercaderes que una vez que alcanzaron alto nivel social quisieron imitar los usos de vida de la aristocracia emulando sus blasones, engañando de este modo al sistema estamental como también lo hicieron con la falsificación de apellidos o genealogías. Así, muchas familias ocultaron con éxito sus oscuras raíces, y sus falsos escudos de armas se tomaron como prueba indiscutible de su nobleza. Con este estudio se pretenden ppues analizar una decena de casos para Córdoba de este fenómeno histórico y social. No obs-tante, contamos con las limitaciones que suponen la pérdida de patrimonio con el paso de los siglos, y la complejidad que conlleva destapar el origen 'impuro' de estas familias a través del cruce de documentación histórica. En cualquier caso, supone el primer estudio de conjunto al respecto hecho en nuestro país.

'SHIELDS PAINT COAT OS ARMS': CONVERSOS AND MERCHANTS HERALDRY IN CORDOBA IN EARLY MODERN PERIOD

ABSTRACT: Heraldry was a visual language that was consolidated as the most universal way of showing royal, ecclesiastical and, essentially, nobility power in Europe for centuries. Its use was legally reserved only for the privileged classes, but an exhaustive family tracking shows us how numerous coats of arms that were exhibited in palaces or chapels belonged to families of Jewish origin or rich merchants that once they reached high social level wanted to imitate the uses of life of the aristocracy emulating their blazons, thereby deceiving the estates system as they did with the falsification of surnames or genealogies. Thus, many families successfully hid their dark roots, and their false coats of arms were taken as indisputable proof of their nobility. With this study we intend to analyze a score of cases in Cordoba of this historical and social course. However, we have the limitations of the loss of heritage over the centuries, and the complexity involved in uncovering the 'impure' origin of these families through the crossing of historical documentation. In any case, it is the first study of the whole made in our country.

Coats-of-arms, portraits and annotations about bishops who ruled the episcopate of Nardò (Lecce, Southern Italy), a chronotassium begun in the 14th century and reached the current diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli with forty-six prelates, a "precursor" and a vicar.

Ce texte étudie deux cas bien documentés où des individus et leurs familles adoptent les armoiries de personnages de fiction, ici issus du cycle arthurien. Les Albret adoptent les armes de Perceval dès le XIIème siècle, sous l'impulsion d'Amanieu d'Albret, familier de la cour du roi Edouard Ier qui a fréquemment recours à l'emblématique et la symbolique arthuriennes pour soutenir ses projets politiques. Régnier Pot adopte lui les armoiries à l'échiqueté du chevalier Palamède à la cour de Bourgogne où naissent au XVème siècle les emprises et les pas d'armes qui poussent à leur paroxysme le goût des nobles pour l'imitation des personnages arthuriens.
Ce texte fait notamment usage d'un armorial inédit conservé au kuperstichkabinett de Berlin (HS 77A10) dont je prépare actuellement l'édition.

This paper aims studies two well-know cases of adoption of fictional coat of arms by individuals and families, the Albret and the Pot. It's also a way to witness the importance of the Arthurian fiction in the minds and the behaviour of any medieval individual, wether a prince or a heraldic painter.

[...] L’interpretazione araldica non vuole essere quindi un semplice esercizio di erudizione ma aspira ad essere parte di un più largo e ambizioso progetto che raccolga sistematicamente e scientificamente dati per la costruzione di una vera e propria anagrafe della committenza. Queste pagine si intendano quindi come mera esemplificazione metodologica di un approccio di ricerca che appare soltanto agli inizi e che si avvale spesso dei dati provenienti dall’analisi sigillografica su documenti d’archivio. Значаја свог хералдичког идентитета и његовог очувања Срби су одавно потпуно свесни и та се свест особито чувала и култивисала у крилу наше Свете Цркве, која је разумевала сву потентност и готово мистични значај поуке и поруке, којих је грб носилац и иконични репрезент у једном народу. Нарочито на тлу Српске Војводине од краја XVII до почетка XX века!
Управо зато целокупно Српство дугује овим српским областима из поменутог периода вечиту благодарност. Уосталом, неоспорно је да за настанак и почетак развоја данашњих грбова Србије и Војводине ми имамо да заблагодаримо пионирском подвигу двојице Сремаца, тј. Димитрију Давидовићу из Земуна и Јакову Живановићу из Обрежа.

Starting from Song of Songs 2, 1: "I am a rose (chabatseleth חֲבַצֶּ֫לֶת) from Saron, a lily (shoshanשׁוֹשָׁן) from the valleys. "I try to identify Hibiscus und Lily as symbols and emblems of Israelites' identity, in places where the Israelites passed through in the course of their history. My focus lies in Korean sources hardly dealt with by schoolars so far.

In Jeremiah 31, 21, Jehovah commands to the Israelites in the dispersal:

Which waymarks can we discover in places where the Israelites have lived in the past?
We find symbols of Hibiscus and Lili mentioned in Song of Songs Chapter 2 as tamgas, emblems and coats of arms in Asia, India, and Europe. Babylonian religion and pantheon were common peculiarity in these regions. The Aramean-Phoenician alphabet was used by the Xiongnus, Huns, Koreans, Ancient Germans, Franks etc.. We can identify or associate biblical names of tribes and persons with peoples throughout ages and territories. Assuming the genes responsible for alcohol intolerance as Israelites’ gens we can bring forward may be the strongest evidence of the dispersion of the Israelites in the Eurasian territories.

Le Corpus des émaux méridionaux n’est pas seulement un outil de travail incontournable et providentiel pour quiconque mène une recherche sur l’émaillerie médiévale, il est aussi un fabuleux point de départ à l’approfondissement des recherches actuelles sur les objets et leur matérialité, leur histoire et leur recontextualisation. Il a en effet contribué à mettre en évidence la singularité et la virtuosité de la production des ateliers limousins d’objets plus ordinaires qui, à côté des chasses, reliquaires et autres artefacts liturgiques, passaient relativement inaperçus. À ce titre les modèles de luminaires mobiles de l’Œuvre de Limoges inventoriés de façon exhaustive dans le cadre de ce travail titanesque restaient jusqu’à présent les objets suscitant le moins d’intérêt par rapport au reste de la production émaillée médiévale. Leur fonction plus modeste ne les ont pourtant pas privé de l’attractivité qui explique le succès des créations limousines: dorure, couleurs vives, décors foisonnants d’une étonnante diversité mêlant emblématique, motifs naturalistes et iconographie domestique ou religieuse. Parmi les multiples modèles produits  figurent deux types de luminaires à décors émaillés portatifs, emboîtables ou articulés, dont la fonction exacte n’est pas encore tout à fait certaine. Un souci pratique, le gain de place et la maniabilité, semblent être à l’origine de la particularité de leurs formes sans équivalent dans le reste de la production médiévale de luminaires mobiles. Cet article propose dans un premier temps de présenter le corpus restreint d’exemplaires actuellement conservés et d’en proposer un classement typologique. Puis d’en questionner les usages et la spécificité et d’interroger, à travers l’étude des décors et particulièrement des armoiries, les caractéristiques de la production émaillée limousine.

The article studies the activity of Gianantonio Lazier, alias Ioannes IX Antonius I Flavius, Angelus, Comnenus, (Ducas), Lascaris, Palaeologus in early 18th century Vienna when he take advantage of having declared himself the only legitime heir of the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George and granting titles and regions. Lazier, a very remarkable impostor, revived the idea of the Byzantine Empire and acted, remarkably supported by the Habsburg Emperor Charles VI as a quasi Byzantine emperor. A lot of his privilege documents with detailed prefaces reveal the gradual development of his idea of a virtual Byzantine emperor.
The article presents new documents issued by him and his successor (and opponent) Radu Cantacuzino.

A short paper on the origins and privileges of the Polish-Lithuanian nobility, on the rules for coats of arms and on the Russian Imperial procedures to confirm or obtain nobility. A description is given of article 92 § 12 of the Charter that provides a special procedure for families that could not present authentic documents. I also give the text (I did not find this elsewhere on the Internet) of the eighteen checks that the Assemblies of Nobility had to carry out, in accordance with Volume IX, Art. 40 of the Code of Laws, in order to recognize "irrefutable evidence of a noble state" of a family.

W książce zaprezentowano działalność polityczną, kościelną i gospodarczą przedstawicieli rodu Prusów na obszarze ziemi łęczyckiej, sieradzkiej i sandomierskiej. Odtworzono stan majątkowy ośmiu rodzin szlacheckich reprezentujących wspomniany ród heraldyczny. Na przykładzie konkretnych familii można dowiedzieć się o ich statusie społecznym oraz polityce matrymonialnej, a w przypadku niektórych z nich nawet o ekspansji na Wschód w XV–XVII wieku. W monografii ukazano również zjawiska protekcji i współpracy, co poszerza dotychczasową wiedzę na temat zasady solidarności współrodowców. Ważnymi elementami publikacji są tablice genealogiczne, część ikonograficzna dotycząca herbu Prus oraz indeks osobowy. Książka dostarcza wielu informacji o społeczeństwie szlacheckim doby średniowiecza, powinna więc zainteresować mediewistów, genealogów, heraldyków i regionalistów.

The monograph is a part of the research trend concerning the society of Central Poland in the Middle Ages. It describes the history of the noble family of Prus coat of arms with particular emphasis on its political, economic and property role until 16th century. The title matter under consideration includes two important historical lands. They were initially duke’s provinces. Then (from 14th to 18th century) they were the autonomous Łęczyca and Sieradz voivodeships. The research includes the part of Sandomierz voivodeship (Opoczno county), where the estate of Prus family was located. It is important to emphasize it is not a typical genealogical monograph. It does not present biographies of Prus family’s members, but it concentrates on different aspects of their activity in a problematical order

Edycja krytyczna szkicu "Poezja szlachecka, legendy herbowne" autorstwa Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego z 1854 r. Książka zawiera poza wprowadzeniem tekst ustalony oraz obszerny  rejestr odmian. Książka została wydana nakładem Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie.
