Electronic Music Distribution (EMD) is in demand of robust, automatically extracted music descriptors. We introduce a timbral similarity measures for comparing music titles. This measure is based on a Gaussian model of cepstrum coefficients. We describe the timbre extractor and the corresponding timbral similarity relation. We describe experiments in assessing the quality of the similarity relation, and show that the measure is able to yield interesting similarity relations, in particular when used in conjunction with other similarity relations. We illustrate the use of the descriptor in several EMD applications developed in the context of the Cuidado European project.

This paper introduces an object-passing model for parallel and distributed application development. Object passing provides the object-oriented application developer with powerful yet simple methods to distribute and exchange data and logic (objects) among processes. The model extends message passing, while exploiting the advantages of the object-oriented paradigm. In addition, the model provides a portable framework for executing applications across multiple platforms, thus effectively exploiting available resources to gain more processing power. A number of advantageous aspects of adopting object passing are discussed, in addition to highlighting the differences between message passing, represented by MPI, and object passing. Another advantage is the model's suitability for heterogeneous systems. When implemented with a portable language like Java, it can support parallel and distributed applications spanning a collection of heterogeneous platforms. This form of execution will eventually allow for full utilization of available resources for any given application written using this model.

With rapid technological advances in network infrastructure, programming languages, compatible component interfaces and so many more areas, today the computational Grid has evolved with the potential of seamless aggregation, integration and interactions. This has made it possible to conceive a new generation of realistic, scientific and engineering simulations of complex physical phenomenon. These applications will symbiotically and opportunistically combine computations, experiments, observations, and real-time data, and will provide important insights into complex phenomena. However, the phenomena being modeled are inherently complex, multi-phased, multi-scaled, dynamic and heterogeneous (in time space and state). Furthermore, their implementations involve multiple researchers with scores of models, hundreds of components and dynamic compositions and interactions between these components. The underlying Grid infrastructure is similarly heterogeneous and dynamic, globally aggregating large numbers of independent computing and communication resources, data stores and sensor networks. The combination of the two results in application development, configuration and management complexities that break current paradigms that are based on passive components and static compositions. In fact, we have reached a level of complexity, heterogeneity, and dynamism that our programming environments and infrastructure are becoming unmanageable/insecure .

ABSTRACT The World Wide Web is currently considered as the most appropriate software platform for the deployment of applications in wide area networks (telematics) as well as corporate intranets. Such applications are, in the majority of cases, tightly coupled with legacy databases hosted by relational management systems. However, the nature of the database enabled WWW systems is quite different from that of classical database applications developed with tools like 4GLs, Forms, Menus, etc. The basic difference lies in the stateless character of the WWW. The `user session' concept, encountered in conventional database applications, does not apply in the WWW environment. Instead, interaction with the information server is accomplished through a series of hits (request–response interactions) which are treated independently. This paper presents an architecture for the deployment of stateful database gateways for WWW servers. Although the server still treats each individual hit independently, state information maintained in the WWW browser as well as in specialized agents that operate behind the WWW server renders the WWW appropriate for a `session-aware' database application. The effort required to port an existing `session-aware' database application to the WWW environment is minimal.

Energy-efficiency is key to meet lifetime requirements of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) applications. Today's run-time platforms and development environments leave it to the application developer to manage power consumption. For best results, the characteristics of the individual hardware platforms must be well understood and minutely directed. An Operating System (OS) with suitable programming abstractions can micromanage power consumption of resources. We demonstrate with the Mote Runner platform how the inherent overhead of managed application code is compensated for by a platform-independent communication API together with sleep optimizations. The proposed abstractions and optimizations can be applied to other modern sensor network platforms. To quantify the effectiveness of our approach, we measured the energy efficiency of a realworld WSN application using a custom TDMA communication protocol fully implemented on both Mote Runner and TinyOS. Mote Runner's power management and sleep phase optimizations outperforms TinyOS in our test application for duty cycles below 10% on the Iris hardware.

This thesis presents a three dimensional (3D) graphics library, JavaGL, and a multiparticipant network library, JavaNL, both of them are written in pure Java programming language. Therefore people can use the applications developed with these two libraries on Internet through a Java enabled browser or on a Java enabled machine.

We present eighteen examples of mission-critical spreadsheets used by diverse people and organizations for application software development, financial risk management, executive information systems, sales and marketing business processes, business operations, and complex analytics. We argue the spreadsheet is a Rapid Development Language, an Integrated Development Environment, and a Fourth Generation Language, and has unusual challenges regarding source code protection. We note that intentional spreadsheet applications are largely absent from the error literature. We explain why people might prefer a spreadsheet to an application developed by the IT department, and show how some spreadsheet programmers choose to avoid-or do not have-an IT department. We find that 1) Spreadsheets are widely used for mission-critical functions; 2) Spreadsheets are an effective application development platform; 3) There is diversity of development skill in creators of mission-critical spreadsheets; 4) Sophisticated programmers sometimes choose spreadsheets over other languages; 5) Spreadsheets are amenable to formal development practices, but such practices seem rare; 6) Spreadsheets play a central role in the evolution of business processes and work systems; and 7) Spreadsheets are a source of "accidental legacy systems". We provide the Skill-User Programming Paradigm to help interpret and explain our observations. We conclude that spreadsheets are vitally important to business, and merit sustained research to discover techniques to enhance quality, productivity, and maintainability.

Edutainment may be considered a developing contemporary research field particularly as new and open source game development environments are made available to the research community. Nevertheless, most edutainment scenarios are usually limited in terms of interactivity, design and aesthetics, a fact that may be attributed to the task complexity, which requires an integrated approach addressing all related fields. This work introduces a conceptual/operational framework for the development of edutainment scenarios, which is both game-based and rich-media oriented. The proposed framework, which for the main part must be considered an educational effort, combines theoretical background -within the fields of human-computer communication, interaction/educational design and entertainment studies-and practical solutions and techniques regarding software and digital games development, for the creation of custom edutainment scenarios. These abstract and more or less theoretical scenarios due to the seamless embodiment of technical practices may be easily developed as fully fledged products, be them games, applications or any kind of digital media that provide the unified service of education and entertainment. In such a case the end product (a digital system) permits the user to interact with the environment in a game-like manner, which enhances learnability and contributes to knowledge acquirement as the underlying objective. The framework, although not a rigid one but rather subjected to ad hoc adjustments, consists of welldefined stages, which include modern educational theories and state-of-the-art development environments. This paper describes in details the proposed educational framework for the edutainment scenarios and presents a recent case study that validates its effectiveness. Despite the fact that the framework is still under development in a continuous feedback process with respect to the scenarios conceived by higher education students who utilise it, the results achieved so far are rather encouraging in terms of creativity, interaction design and aesthetics, thus addressing in a satisfactory manner the above mentioned deficiencies which -in our opinion-characterise a large portion of commercial edutainment scenarios

J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) is Java's platform for building distributed enterprise applications. The platform takes advantage of a wide range of new and evolving technologies and has been enriched by proven design solutions. These solutions are formulated and documented in what is known as J2EE design patterns. Rather than applying the patterns in isolation, a complete design system can be composed of the patterns. This pattern-based system can significantly ease the development process of J2EE applications and improve the quality of the produced software. In this paper, we will show how a general architectural tool (Fred) can be used to model such a pattern system and to generate an architecture-centric environment for developing J2EE applications. The environment is a task-based wizard that guides the user through the development of the application by enforcing certain design rules.

There is a wide range of standards available for the integration and interoperability of applications and information systems, both on domain-specific and domain-neutral levels. The evaluation and selection of interoperability standards are necessary in the application development and integration projects, when there is a need to assess the usefulness of existing models or to find open solutions. In addition, standards have to be evaluated when recommendations are made for a given domain or when their quality is examined. The evaluation of the scope and other aspects of interoperability standards is usually performed against project-specific requirements, but generic frameworks can be used for supporting the evaluation. In this article, we present a conceptual framework which has been developed for the systematic evaluation of interoperability standards. We also present an overview of a process for the evaluation of interoperability standards. We illustrate the use of these models with practical experience and examples.

Distributed computing environments have evolved from in-house clusters to Grids and now Cloud platforms. We, as others, provide HPC benchmarks results over Amazon EC2 that show a lower performance of Cloud resources compared to private resources. So, it is not yet clear how much of impact Clouds will have in high performance computing (HPC). But hybrid Grid/Cloud computing may offer opportunities to increase overall applications performance, while benefiting from in-house computational resources extending them by Cloud ones only whenever needed. In this paper, we advocate the usage of ProActive, a well established middleware in the grid community, for mixed Grid/Cloud computing, extended with features to address Grid/Cloud issues with little or no effort for application developers. We also introduce a framework, developed in the context of the DiscoGrid project, based upon the ProActive middleware to couple HPC domain-decomposition SPMD applications in heterogeneous multi-domain environments. Performance results coupling Grid and Cloud resources for the execution of such kind of highly communicating and processing intensive applications have shown an overhead of about 15%, which is a non-negligible value, but lower enough to consider using such environments to achieve a better cost-performance trade-off than using exclusively Cloud resources.

1 ABSTRACT The past years have shown an enormous increase in efforts to open up telecom network functionality for application development. This means that applications can access core network functionality by means of open standardised APIs based on open technology. One value of opening up of the network is the emergence of new business models where applications can be developed and provided by enterprises outside the traditional network operator domain.

Cloud computing systems fundamentally provide access to large pools of data and computational resources through a variety of interfaces similar in spirit to existing grid and HPC resource management and programming systems. These types of systems offer a new programming target for scalable application developers and have gained popularity over the past few years. However, most cloud computing systems in operation today are proprietary, rely upon infrastructure that is invisible to the research community, or are not explicitly designed to be instrumented and modified by systems researchers.

This article provides an overview of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the issues surrounding their use in mortgage finance and related industries. After a brief introduction to GIS and geographic data, the application of GIS technology to mortgage finance is explored. The article also examines organizational challenges in developing in-house GIS capability. GIS's greatest potential contribution is to credit, property, and agency risk management; marketing; regulatory compliance; and research and development. It is less useful in managing prepayment risk and less still in managing interest rate risk. Most existing applications draw heavily on spatial database management and map support functions of a GIS, with little emphasis on its spatial analytical capabilities. Prototype applications and research and development applications, however, draw on more powerful spatial analytical methods such as spatial statistics, spatial econometric modeling, and optimization methods. Spatial research is critical in building next-generation mortgage finance business applications.

The automation of engineering processes through Knowledge Based Engineering methods and technologies can provide significant savings in project scheduling and cost, increasing competitiveness in a changing aerospace market. In this paper we present outcomes of a research project aimed at improving engineering automation capability through development of a system for automatic rule based path-finding for the complex engineering task of aircraft electrical harness and pipe routing.

Grid computing facilitates the aggregation and coordination of resources that are distributed across multiple administrative domains for large-scale and complex e-Science experiments. Writing, deploying, and testing grid applications over highly heterogeneous and distributed resources are complex and challenging. The process requires grid-enabled programming tools that can handle the complexity and scale of the infrastructure. However, while a large amount of research has been undertaken into grid middleware, little work has been directed specifically at the area of grid application development tools. This paper presents the design and implementation of ISENGARD, an infrastructure for supporting e-Science and grid application development. Non-functional requirements such as performance, program size, and energy consumption significantly affect the quality of software systems. Small devices like PDAs and mobile phones have little memory, slow processors, and energy constraints. The C programming language has been the choice of many programmers when developing application for small devices. On the other hand, the need for functional software correctness has derived several specification languages that adopt the Design by Contract (DBC) technique. In this work we propose a specification language for C, called CML (C Modeling Language), focused on non-functional requirements. CML is inspired on the Design By Contract technique. An additional contribution is a verification tool for hard real-time systems. The tool is the first application developed for CML. The practical usage of CML is presented through a case study, which is a real application for a vehicle monitoring system.

The simulation of medical procedures through virtual reality systems can offer realistic training environments for new professionals. This paper presents the development of a simulator for medical training, based in a previous study case. The application was completely developed using a free system called CyberMed which provides high-level access to several functionalities expected in a virtual reality simulator. Details of the application development will be presented. The results obtained will be compared with the previous case study.

This project was primarily funded by the LDRD office at Sandia National Laboratories. During the course of this three year project, the EPA, DHS, and SNL's CSRF funded other but related algorithmic extensions, which are included in this report. The EPA funding continues to support additional algorithmic development for the security of water distribution systems. DHS funded additional algorithmic research for security of internal facilities, both forward modeling and source inversion for transient simulations. CSRF funded research of the air security portion for the first year of this LDRD project. We wish to thank Dan Quintana and members of the engineering department from the Tucson Water utility company for very useful meetings and technical information exchanges, in addition to access to datasets. Most of our algorithms were tested against these datasets which are representative of real and production quality networks.

This paper presents a 3D graphics engine which is specifically designed to minimize the hardware cost while providing sufficient computing capability for consumer electronics with small to medium screen sizes (up to 800times600) such as digital television. The presented 3D engine consists of a fixed full 3D graphics pipeline for both geometry and rendering operation. This engine provides a standard AHB interface that makes it easily to be integrated into an AMBA-based SoC. The development of the 3D engine has gone through a rigorous design process: starting from system modeling (using System-C), RTL implementation, hardware/software co-simulation and FPGA verification to test chip fabrication. This 3D engine provides 3.3 M vertices/s and 278 Mpixels/s in maximum performance at 139 MHz using 0.18 silicon technology with 987 K gates that is sufficient for most applications for digital television. At the same time, a complete OpenGL-ES 1.1 API, windowing system, Linux operating system, device driver and a 3D performance monitoring tool have been developed for our 3D engine. This performance monitoring tool provides run-time performance information include frame rate, triangle rate, pixel rate, involved OpenGL function list, function counts, memory utilization and etc. Moreover, a built-in real-time AHB bus tracer is also provided to monitor the bus activities of the 3D engine and other components on the system bus. The bus tracer captures on-chip bus signals at ether cycle accurate or transaction levels and applies real-time compression to both levels of signals. With the performance monitoring tool and the bus tracer, the 3D application developer can easily analyze the communication of the components and fine tune the 3D application to optimize the entire SoC system performance and to satisfy performance/cost constrains on consumer electronics. Network-aware Applications is a promising new concept in which applications are aware of network conditions and thus can adapt to the varying environment to achieve acceptable and predictable performance. This paper reviews the current research on network-aware applications, with a focus on their appliance on mobile multimedia applications. First, different frameworks or architectures of networkaware applications are introduced. Research issues and activities are then discussed in detail from two basic aspects of network-aware applications: network awareness and network adaptation. After the discussion about network-aware applications in general network environments, special problems and requirements of mobile multimedia applications are summarized, and different network-aware application approaches for mobile multimedia delivery are compared with respect to these requirements. Finally, we provide some suggestions to network-aware mobile multimedia application developers and identify current challenges in this area.

Offshore outsourcing to vendors in foreign countries causes unique challenges which need to be understood and managed effectively. This paper explores cultural differences in IS offshoring arrangements involving German client organizations that outsource application development activities to Indian vendors. For this purpose, a research framework is developed based on both theoretical considerations and specific empirical observations from multiple case studies. The goal is to (1) explore the nature of cultural differences in offshore outsourcing arrangements in depth and to (2) analyze the relationship between those cultural differences and offshore outsourcing success. Based on the case findings, implications and practices for the management of offshore development projects are outlined. The results indicate that cultural differences in terms of power distance, IS designer values, and an active versus passive working attitude critically affect several dimensions of relationship quality, thereby influencing offshore outsourcing success. A clear definition of roles and mechanisms, strong leadership, and an active management of culture by adapting to either the client's or the vendor's national culture appeared to be effective ways to manage cultural differences.

Even though the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) projects have been going on for many years, with many groups of stakeholders involved, it was found that there was no clear guidelines in terms of the stakeholders' role in the EMR projects. This paper attempts to fill in the gap in the existing implementation plan by introducing the pre-implementation framework for the EMR projects. This framework focuses on the role and responsibilities of all the stakeholders that have been identified from the literature. Six stakeholders are involved in the EMR projects:-1) the Government, 2)the healthcare organization, 3) the IT personnel, 4) the end-users, 5) the healthcare application developer, and 6) the suppliers. The pre-implementation framework for the ERM project was constructed by using the Activity Diagram with the Unified Modeling Language (UML) notation to show the clear roles of all stakeholders. This paper also describes four elements involved in the pre-implementation framework:-1)Preparation of the Stakeholder , 2) Hardware Preparation, 3) Preparation of the Developer, and 4) Software Preparation. It is hoped that the pre-implementation framework proposed in this paper could be used as a guideline to implement the EMR system.

In this tutorial, we will present the Human Interface Guidelines for both iPhone and iPad and offer hands-on experience in designing user interfaces for these devices. We will also discuss how to integrate the guidelines in higher education and give examples from our lecture on iPhone application development. The goal of the tutorial is to provide the participants with a basic understanding of the iPhone Human Interface Guidelines and enable them to review and design iPhone apps according to the standards.

Monitoring and diagnosis of electrical equipment, in particular power transformers, has attracted considerable attention for many years. It is of great importance for the utilities to find the incipient faults in these transformers as early as possible. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) is one of the most useful techniques to detect incipient faults in oil-filled power transformers. Various methods have been developed to interpret DGA results such as IEC ratio code, Rogers method and Duval triangle method. One of the most frequently used DGA methods is Duval triangular. It is a graphical method that allows one to follow the faults more easily and more precisely. In this paper a detailed implementation of Duval triangle method was presented for researchers and utilities interested in visualizing their own DGA results using a software program. The Java language is used for this software because of its growing importance in modern application development.

Support of voice services, whether via direct customer care agent, IVR, or deposit of voicemail, is done in real time. Real-time data support might be via Web access frequently asked questions, an avatar, or an online customer care agent using instant messaging. These require real-time interactive responses but low data volumes. The help desk function might also include nonreal time (IVR and data) support for both MFI personnel and MFI customers. Nonreal-time support can involve call back or use of chat, voicemail, or electronic mail to correspond with the person making the request. Basic connectivity and access to such services are all that is required.
