My leadership philosophy over 40 years of my academic and administrative career is to be entrepreneurial in value creation by bringing multiple stakeholders, especially business and community partners, to meet teaching and research goals. I believe in two basic principles: 1) Bring the strength of multiple stakeholders and diverse viewpoints to co-create value with a shared vision that will benefit all involved, and 2) Develop, differentiate and sustain each endeavor using definable metrics and a systems approach.

However, very little guidance on the granularity of " services" has been provided, which has an impact on the trade-off between flexibility and coordination effort. We suggest that the lack of granularity guidance is due to the lack of the explicit positioning of " services" in the traditional enterprise architecture literature. After clarifying the relationship between " services" and " processes" , we provide an approach to define " process complexity" along certain dimensions and use this complexity metric to decide on the appropriate granularity of the " services" .

Background: Healthcare providers have focused on improving patient care transitions to reduce una... more Background: Healthcare providers have focused on improving patient care transitions to reduce unanticipated readmission costs, improve patient care quality post-discharge and increase patient satisfaction. This is especially true in US since the introduction of the Affordable Care Act. While there are several practices and evidence-based programs discussed in the literature to address care transition post-discharge, the key challenge remains the same -how to structure the care transition program to influence its effectiveness. In this paper, we focus on modeling one particular care transition -moving a patient from a hospital to a skilled nursing facility (SNF) -and discuss how improved capacity building and use of intermediaries such as advanced nurse practitioners have shown promise in reducing patient readmissions. Methods: The methodology proposed here uses service dominant (SD) logic research to inductively derive a model for service exchanges between the two provider ecosystems. This model is then used to analyze service gaps and look for opportunities to innovate within an SNF and improve its capacity to deliver care. Use of intermediation that expands the service model with the addition of more care providers besides the hospital and SNF is also discussed to reduce patient readmissions. The study demonstrates that a number of actors have to work collaboratively to make care transition effective in meeting the patient and provider goals. Specifically, when two care facilities, hospital and SNF, are involved in care transition, opportunities exist to improve their internal capacity to address care within and across facilities. The paper makes two important contributions. It shows the role of SD Logic in identifying opportunities for service innovations in support of care transition, and it shows the role of actors in provider-customer ecosystems to make the transition effective.

Complexity theory argues for bounded instability to allow organizations to run operations at a re... more Complexity theory argues for bounded instability to allow organizations to run operations at a regular speed while also allowing them to explore innovations at a faster speed in support of digital transformation. HeXie management theory uses a mix of systems engineering and holism to argue for a theme around which empowered employees can explore and couple the dividends from such explorations to the organizational vision and mission. Authors integrate these two theories and multiple leadership processes (administrative, enabling, and adaptive) around four guiding principles: alignment around theme, dynamism of employees, transitiveness of dividends, and adaptiveness to support organizational growth and capacity building. These principles are used to discuss how digital leadership has guided healthcare transformation both inside and outside a hospital in multiple use cases, thus providing insight for thought leadership in digital health.

Research has associated intensive care unit (ICU) readmissions with increased risk of morbidity a... more Research has associated intensive care unit (ICU) readmissions with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Readmitted patients are also exposed to complications as they are transferred between hospital units. Moreover, due to their unexpected nature, readmissions increase ICU costs and the complexity of managing ICUs. Existing studies on ICU readmissions have mainly used logistic regression for identifying patients who are more likely to be readmitted. However, such studies do not account for the imbalanced nature of the data where the class of interest (readmitted patients) is the minority group. This paper empirically compares three approaches for handling the imbalanced ICU readmissions data: misclassification cost ratio, synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE), and random under-sampling. We used three classification techniques for identifying patients who are more likely to be readmitted to the ICU within the same hospital stay: support vector machines, C5.0, and logistic regression. We evaluated the classification performance of the three methods using recall, specificity, accuracy, F-measure, G-mean, confusion entropy, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. Our results showed that SMOTE is the best approach for addressing the imbalanced nature of the data. The sensitivity analysis identified prolonged ventilation, renal failure, and pneumonia as the top three predictors of ICU readmissions. Our findings can be used to develop a decision support tool to help ICU clinicians and administrators in identifying patients who are more likely to be readmitted and hence provide the patients with the appropriate care to minimize their risk of readmission.

Unfortunately, past articulations of the theory are limited by their inability to incorporate effectively organizational learning, a key organizational capability thought to contribute to competitive advantage. This paper presents a model designed to incorporate organizational learning into the resource-based view and demonstrates the need for such a model through a number of case examples. Our fundamental argument is that organizational learning is a strategic capability and that resource-based theory must be able to incorporate organizational learning if it is to explain adequately the process of achieving sustainable competitive advantage. With the emergence of the global economy and the accelerating dynamics of the marketplace, firms everywhere have realized the need to improve constantly their products and processes in order to create and retain competitive advantage (cf. . The current interest in organizational learning (OL) among management scholars and practitioners reflects this new competitive landscape. Nevis, DiBella and Gould (1995) have defined organizational learning as "the capacity or processes within an organization to maintain or improve performance based on experience" (Nevis et al., 1995, p. 73). This definition is similar to those advanced by Schon (1978), Dodgson (1993), and . According to Dodgson, "Learning is a dynamic concept, and its use in theory emphasizes the continually changing nature of organizations" (Dodgson, 1993, p. 376). Within this broad conceptualization, theorists have recognized different types, or levels, of learning. For example, have emphasized the need for double-loop learning -learning required to make fundamental changes in basic assumptions about the competitive environment -in addition to single-loop learning, which relates to improvements in existing organizational processes. Similarly, Senge (1990) contrasts "generative" with "adaptive" learning. Digital artifacts such as performance dashboard track operational data and transform these into key performance indicators (KPIs) to set organizational goals and align unit level operations. However, the velocity of change occurring in the marketplace needs a dynamic approach: a real-time aggregation of operational data into KPIs for a daily or weekly review to gain insights and respond quickly to evolving market expectations. This chapter discusses how an rtDashboard (real time dashboard) has evolved to become a key artifact that transformed the way a hospital in SE Michigan engaged in its strategic planning process.

This paper focuses on agent-based approach to study the relationship between the individual behav... more This paper focuses on agent-based approach to study the relationship between the individual behavior of participants and the overall development of a virtual community, to help people to better understand the interactive process, forecast and manage the community development. In this paper, we first analyze the strengths of agentbased approach and the features of virtual communities. We argue that agent-based modeling and simulation approach is well suited to study virtual communities. We then build an agent-based model for virtual learning communities (VLCs). Each participant in VLCs is modeled as an agent with cognitive and social characteristics. The interactive activities are decomposed into four modules: registration module, activation module, action module, and adaptation module. A discussion of general observations of the community behaviors and managerial implications is presented based on series of comparative simulations.

However, acquiring information system based tacit knowledge used in decision‐making has been a major challenge in the last three decades. This task became even harder as technology enabled firms, especially manufacturing began to distribute their operations globally and in turn also globally distributed their decision makers. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) involves many practices as well as processes. Singularity, cohesion and cued availability are some of the unique characteristics of these practices. Start and smart parts and Virtual Collaboration Rooms are some prevalent approaches used to address these practices. In this article, a knowledge provenance framework is used to develop a broader approach to elicit and structure some of the knowledge associated with these practices and is illustrated with an example.

Creating user awareness of new technology and managing its organizational diffusion effectively i... more Creating user awareness of new technology and managing its organizational diffusion effectively is a major objective of many contemporary MIS organizations. In a centralized MIS environment, the onus of technology introduction and diffusion often falls upon the MIS function. This article recounts the experiences of the MIS department of the Carrier Corporation in introducing expert systems technology to its users. These experiences highlight the importance of effective management of the process, of tempering user enthusiasm so that expectations remain realistic, and of ensuring that the ultimate adoption of the technology can be adequately cost-justified. Lessons learned at Carrier from the technology introduction effort are presented.
