Kiilerich) main reason for Pacatus' admonition. 5 At Silahtaraga on the outskirts of Constantinople, slightly under life-size marble statues of Artemis, Selene, Helios (Fig. 1.1) and Heracles, and snake-tailed figures in dark grey limestone have come to light. 6 Similarly carved in dark stone, remains of snake-legged giants have been found in a fourth-century building at Valdetorres de Jarama in central Spain. 7 In Spain, as in Constantinople, the presence of the giants suggests a group composition with figures in dynamic poses and with dramatic potential. Since Pacatus refers to labours, triumphs and wars, he seems to be thinking of visual narratives rather than single figures. While some of Heracles' labours could be shown as abbreviated narratives, for example, the hero holding the apples of the Hesperides, other subjects would require more complex modes of representation: images set up as grand tableaux suggesting spectacular compositions. Due to the fact that mythological subjects were fashioned in a conventional manner, Idealplastik, by nature conservative, is quite difficult to date. Based on the belief that such statuary was no longer made in later antiquity, scholars formerly tended to assign works that were traditional in style and subject matter to the second or early third century. Thus the Silahtaraga sculptures were first assigned to the late second century, while recent research 5. N.

Affrontando il fenomeno della cristianizzazione dell'area iblea alla luce dei monumenti archeologici ed alcuni aspetti sociologici relativi, in particolare, alla realizzazione dei cimiteri ipogeici della Sicilia sud-orientale, è già emersa la necessità di fissare meglio la cronologia delle catacombe, di cui pure è stato già possibile proporre una sequenza tipologica 1 . Questa si fonda soprattutto sulle osservazioni che si possono fare in merito al succedersi dei vari tipi tombali all'interno degli ipogei, così come si evincono dalla stratigrafia "in negativo", e su altri notevoli contributi forniti dall'esame dei dati che vengono dai rinvenimenti di monete, di documenti epigrafici e di altri manufatti 2 .

La genesi del Digesto di Giustiniano coinvolge due aspetti, tecnico l'uno, l'altro culturale. Il profilo tecnico, ossia il metodo seguito dai compilatori per spogliare la letteratura giuridica e ricomporla in un'antologia, è il più esplorato, da Bluhme che lo chiarì in modo già pressoché definitivo nel 1820 a Honoré che, di recente, ha rinnovato le sue ipotesi circa la divisione e il ritmo di lavoro dei commissari. 1 Segnano il passo, invece, gli studi sulla genesi culturale, cioè sulle condizioni intellettuali che suggerirono e resero possibile un'operazione sofisticata quale fu compiuta, in breve tempo, dai commissari giustinianei. 2 Se una situazione di stallo storiografico ha un vantaggio, è che consente di prendere le distanze dalle opinioni e di riesaminare più liberamente l'impostazione data ai problemi. 3 Oltre alla dispersione delle fonti, su cui torneremo, a rendere impervia l'esplorazione delle premesse culturali dell'opera giustinianea è, infatti, lo stato della storiografia giuridica. Al tempo dell'interpolazionismo, il clima era per alcuni versi più favorevole (non sorprende che risalga a quella stagione il tentativo più ambizioso di spiegare la «genèse du Digeste»): 4 era l'ipotesi stessa che stava alla base di quel metodo, ossia che 1 T. Die nördlich der Alpen oft seit der Mittelkaiserzeit kontinuierlich genutzten Bestattungsplätze weisen ihre größte Belegungsdichte um die Limeskastelle und im 4. Jh. auf. Die meisten enden spätestens im 5. Jh. Im Verlauf des 6. Jhs. gleichen sich westlich der Enns die Grabausstattungen jenen Bayerns allmählich an und konzentrieren sich auf den oberösterreichischen und salzburgischen Zentralraum.
Für das spätere Karantanien fehlen sowohl um die großen Zentralorte Virunum und Teurnia die für Ufernoricum kennzeichnenden Nekropolen des 4. Jhs. Beim derzeitigen Forschungsstand ist das Phänomen nicht erklärbar, besonders in Anbetracht der Belegungsdichte in den beiden folgenden Jahrhunderten. Die Aufgabe der Zentralorte und der sie umgebenden Friedhöfe erfolgt rund drei Generationen später als an der Donau. 592 war das Gebiet bei einem Einfall des eben eingesetzten Bayernherzogs Tassilo I. (591-610) jedenfalls schon eine Provincia Sclaborum.
Für die folgenden eineinhalb Jahrhunderte wird das Fortleben spätantiker Bestattungssitten in Form weitgehend beigabenloser Körpergräber im weiteren Umland der ehemaligen Zentralorte diskutiert. Dies passt zur hohen Integrationsfähigkeit slawischer Gesellschaften passt, in denen Menschen unterschiedlicher Abstammung frei leben konnten und keine Abgaben zu leisten verpflichtet waren. Da dieses Modell auch für die provinzialen Unterschichten Anziehungskraft besaß, verfiel die komplexe Arbeitsteilung der Spätantike und mit ihr Kirchenorganisation, Staatlichkeit, Fernhandel und Schriftlichkeit. Sollte die Belegungsdichte der spätantiken und merowingerzeitlichen Gräberfelder die tatsächliche demographische Situation spiegeln, so ist nördlich der Alpen dichtere Besiedlung vorauszusetzen als in Binnennoricum. Bei einer stark bäuerlich orientierten Wirtschaft, die sich von der römischen Villenwirtschaft zu einer prähistorisch anmutenden Subsistenzwirtschaft zurück entwickelte, mögen die besseren naturräumlichen Voraussetzungen in Oberösterreich und Salzburg eine Rolle gespielt haben.

Clothing and outward appearance as a means of expressing individual and collective identity were of great importance in Late Antiquity. This publication is the first interdisciplinary overview of source material and provides a critical view of opposing statements on the value of written sources, images, and archaeological finds on habitus barbarus  . Based on these sources, the book develops not only a new perspective on the meaning of “barbaric” clothing but also sheds new light on the Late Roman “barbarians” themselves.

Im Rahmen verschiedener Forschungsprojekte wurden metallische Fundstücke analysiert, an deren Oberfläche ankorrodierte Textilreste festgestellt werden konnten. Die Untersuchung dieser Fundgegenstände brachte immer wieder sehr interessante Details bezüglich deren Beschaffenheit und Machart zu Tage. Basierend auf diesen interessanten Ergebnissen wurde von den Autoren eine Untersuchungsreihe zu archäologischen Textilfragmenten begonnen. Im Artikel werden einerseits erste Detailergebnisse der Analysen an einem urnenfelderzeitlichen Armreif aus Vösendorf und einer frühmittelalterlichen Gürtelschnalle aus Mautern-Melkerstraße vorgestellt, andererseits wird auf die dabei auftretenden Schwierigkeiten und Einflussfaktoren aufmerksam gemacht.

By systematic survey methods were numerous previously unknown finding sites discovered also at the devastated villages "Klein Görigk" and "Kausche" in southern Brandenburg (Fig. 1). This illustrates the potentially richness of archaeological sites in this barren landscape as an exemplary case in an intensively examined region. The numerous workshops of the late Roman period in the 3rd to 5th century AD indicate a massive iron production in this region. The iron production was far beyond of own needs. It was the economical basis for trade. Interestingly, in the iron-smelting centers at the "Niederlausitz" no settlements and cemeteries of this period have been discovered. These are a little further away in the more fertile lowland basins. The workshops have been visited only temporarily for iron smelting. The stereotyped iron production workshops were built in close proximity to locally occurring iron ore. And they were established in the woodlands. By the mass production of iron, which required very much charcoal, is also presumed a negative impact on the prehistoric environment. Evidence of the alleged "ecological crisis" at the end of the late Germanic culture (mid of the 5th century AD), however, could not yet be proven.

Das interdisziplinären Projekt „Kleidung und Identität/Clothing and Identities – New Perspectives on Textiles in the Roman Empire (DressID)“ befasste sich mit der Erforschung der kulturellen Einheit und Vielfalt sowie ihre Widerspiegelung in den Textilien und Trachten innerhalb des Römischen Imperiums. Aus Österreich konnten im Rahmen des Projektes bis Februar 2010 128 Textilien aus dem Zeitraum zwischen dem Ende des 3. und des 5. Jhs. erfasst werden. Dabei handelt es sich vor allem um Textilien aus spätantiken Körpergräbern, die meist durch Metallkorrosion erhalten blieben.

In Assos, a three-nave basilica was built in the early Byzantine period in the Hellenistic-Roman necropolis in which a saint grave was integrated. The tomb is characterized by a channel through liquids could be directed into the interior of the tomb. In middle Byzantine times, the building was converted into a church with isolated aisles. The naos was used for liturgical purposes, the surrounding rooms and the area around were used as a burial place. A special feature was the newly built chapel east of the apse, in and around which a large number of dead-born babies were buried.

La ricerca evidenzia che nel Mediterraneo, tra la seconda metà del V e il primo quarto del VI secolo, i rapporti commerciali continuarono a essere floridi anche tra la parte orientale e quella occidentale. I Vandali non turbarono, dunque, rapporti ed equilibri commerciali nel mare internum.

This contribution investigates perceptions of Arab nomads in the hagiography of the Late Antique East. Over the past decades, these texts, mostly saints' lives and episodes from church histories, have often been used to provide social and cultural historians with information on the ethnography, geography, customs and manners of those labelled "Saracens" or "Ishmaelites" in the texts. However, the historicity of the narratives is difficult to assess, and a closer inspection reveals that most of the motifs used in Late Antiquity revert to older models from Classical Antiquity. The article therefore focuses on specific aspects, such as how the writers depicted the Arabs' manners and customs as contrasting with their own societies and constructed a dichotomy between the civilisation and the animal-like ferocity of the former. It becomes clear that Christian authors used the depiction of the Arabs' seemingly deviant lifestyle in order to both reassure their readership and excite its curiosity. The display of God's omnipotence in a large number of the texts discussed here offered a chance to demonstrate that Christian saints could eventually convert such people, or, when conversion was not possible, could still hope for very potent miracles.

Gregory of Tours has, over the past few decades, become one of the most extensively studied authors of the Late Antiquity. Notwithstanding the progress achieved in the study of his historiographical work, his attitude towards eschatology has not yet been adequately addressed. Gregory refutes the arguments of his contemporaries who believe that the world is coming to an end, though he himself appears to question his own anti-apocalyptic attitude by registering the signs he understands as foretelling the coming apocalypse. Those apparently contradictory notions can be reconciled by the study of the way his Historiae are structured. Gregory, writing at the end of the sixth century, begins his narrative with the creation of the world and the fall of Adam and Eve. However, his work lacks any ending that is comparable with the divine act of creation it begins with. He settles this issue in a later part of his work by stressing the signs of the apocalypse that he is perfectly aware will not come soon. Thus, somehow artificially, he gives his narrative the Creation-Apocalypse frame which the contemporary Frankish history he describes could not provide him with.

welches den Kern der folgenden Untersuchung bildet, wurde vor einiger Zeit auf dem Antiquitätenmarkt erworben 1 . Über seine Herkunft war nichts in Erfahrung zu bringen. Das Siegel ist nahezu rund, hat einen Durchmesser von etwa 22 mm, eine Dicke von durchschnittlich 3 mm und wiegt 8,14 g. Der Erhaltungszustand ist sehr gut. An der Vorderseite ist ein dreieckiges Stück ausgebrochen, und auch an der Rückseite fi ndet sich eine kleine Beschädigung.

Through the systematic review of the finds of the early medieval slavic hill fort of Kopchin in Upper Lusatia, some pottery fragments were identified that are probably older than previously believed: They are dated to the migration period. This is of particular relevance. Traditionally, a gap in settlement in northeastern Germany of the 5.–7. centuries AD is postulated. This hiatus is apparently due partly to the rather difficult secure dating of the often non-specific ceramic types of this period. With increasing knowledge of these ceramics over the last years, new finding sites of the migration period were localized especially in northern Brandenburg and the German-Polish Pomerania. In northeast Saxony, the presented pottery fragments are still singular discoveries of the 5.–7. centuries AD without parallels in this region.

Zusammenfassung
Durch die systematische Sichtung des Fundmaterials des frühmittelalterlichen Burgwalls von Kopchin in der Oberlausitz konnten einige Keramikscherben identifiziert werden, die wohl älter als bisher angenommen sind und in die Völkerwanderungszeit datieren. Dies ist von besonderer Relevanz, da für Nordostdeutschland traditionell eine Besiedlungslücke im 5.–7. Jh. AD postuliert wird. Dieser Hiatus ist offenbar teils auch der schwierigen sicheren Datierung der oft recht unspezifischen Keramiktypen geschuldet. So konnten mit wachsendem Kenntnisstand dieser Keramiken in den letzten Jahren auch einige völkerwanderungszeitliche Fundstellen, besonders in Nordbrandenburg und im deutsch-polnischen Pommern lokalisiert werden. In Nordost-Sachsen sind die vorgestellten singulären Funde des 5.–6. Jhs. AD jedoch bisher ohne sichere Parallelen, auch wenn mittlerweile einige Fundstellen der Völkerwanderungszeit in der Region erkannt worden sind.

Der Beitrag bietet eine Zusammenfassung des Forschungsstandes
zu dem Palastkomplex Cercadilla in Córdoba und seiner
späteren Umnutzung als christliche Kultstätte. Die unterschiedlichen Thesen,
die in den letzten Jahren in Bezug auf die Funktion und den Eigentü-
mer des Palastes geäußert worden sind – ob es sich um eine private Villa,
den Sitz des Statthalters der Baetica oder des vicarius hispaniarum oder aber
den Bischofspalast des Ossius oder anderer, späterer Bischöfe gehandelt hat
–, werden einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen. Mit Blick auf die verschiedenen
Argumente wie insbesondere die Größe der Anlage, den Zeitpunkt
des Baus, die Ausgestaltung mit Inschriften u. a., wird schließlich das
Fazit gezogen, dass diese Thesen abzulehnen sind. Cercadilla erschließt sich
einem nur dann, wenn man davon ausgeht, dass es als Kaiserpalast konzipiert
worden ist.

The discussion about the construction period of the Late Roman bridge over the River Rhine in Cologne has lasted since the 1960s. The concepts of archaeologists and ancient historians seemed to be incommensurate with those of the dendrochronologists. With this essay in honour of Ursula Tegtmeier the authors, an archaeologist of the Roman provinces and a dendroarchaeologist, try to draw a historically coherent picture based upon a re-evaluation of the facts from both disciplines with special regard to military strategic events during the 4th century AD. This was done to solve the apparent discrepancies persisting to date.

SUMMARY: The question of Gregory's of Tours awareness of the persuasive potential of his learning he demonstrates in his works is discussed. The Touronian bishop's high evaluation of the erudition of other men is clearly shown and juxtaposed with his opinion concerning his linguistic competence. Gregory's ability to embellish his style, being a sign of the literary training is demonstrated. His degree of acquaintance with the classical literature is assessed and his familiarity with Latin poetry is underlined. The literal meaning of his statements concerning classical literature as detrimental to a Christian soul is contrasted with the subtle and indirect play those statements engage his readers in; their implicit meaning is shown to contradict their direct significance. Various examples of Gregory's efforts to display his erudition in the field of literature and his high degree of learning, including a fair number of erudite digressions are brought forth. Gregory's unambiguous statement concerning the intention with which he inserted them into his text is evoked. Finally, the Touronian Bishop's positive judgement about his audience's capacity of properly evaluating the erudite content of his writing is demonstrated and corroborated with the external evidence provided by contemporary sources.

Zusammenfassung: Die Quellen zur spätantiken Religionsgeschichte der Iberischen Halbinsel werden durch eine christliche determinierte Voreingenommenheit dominiert. Die Tendenz der Quellen geht dahin, die Existenz des Heidentum im 5., 6. und 7. Jahrhundert zu bestreiten: Stattdessen wird behauptet, alle Einwohner seien Christen und religiöse Konflikte ergäben sich lediglich aufgrund von Aberglauben, magischen Praktiken oder christlichen Häresien. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die These auf, dass das Heidentum sehr viel länger mit dem Christentum koexistiert hat, als allgemein angenommen wird.

Abstract: Sources about the religious history of the Iberian Peninsula in Late Antiquity are dominated by a Christian bias. The general tendency of those sources is to negate the very existence of Paganism in the 5th, 6th, and 7th century: Instead, it is claimed that all inhabitants are Christians and religious conflicts are explained as arising from superstition, magical practices or Christian heresies. This article argues that Paganism co- existed with Christianity much longer than is commonly assumed.

La Antigüedad Tardía se caracteriza por la transformación del mundo urbano y rural respecto a la época romana, teniendo como uno de sus ejes principales de cambio la difusión del Cristianismo. Al amparo de la nueva religión se extendió la influencia de la Iglesia en la organización del territorio. El objetivo principal de nuestra investigación es analizar la existencia de élites locales y regionales vinculadas al poder político y religioso, así como su papel en el desarrollo de una nueva red de centros de poder que modificó el paisaje urbano y rural durante la fase post-romana. Por esta razón, prestaremos especial atención a las huellas materiales vinculadas a los grupos dirigentes, sin olvidarnos de las fuentes escritas contemporáneas. Utilizando ambos recursos y con la ayuda de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) desarrollaremos un discurso histórico que trate la evolución política, administrativa pero también social de la región, en un contexto de profundos cambios.
Late Antiquity is characterised by the transformation of the urban and rural world as compared to the Roman Age. One of the main axis of this change would be the spread of Christianity. Under the new religion the influence of the Church in the organisation of the territory was extended. The main focus of our research consists in analysing the existence of local and regional elites related to political and religious power, as well as their role in the development of a new network of power centres that modified the urban and rural landscape during the post-Roman phase. This is the reason why special attention will be paid to the tangible traces left by the leading groups, besides focusing on the contemporary written sources. By using these two resources and being assisted by Geographic Information Systems (GIS) we will be able to develop a historical discourse about political, administrative and social evolution of the Region within a context of significant changes.

El rigor de la transposición de una figura histórica al mundo cinematográfico no debe medirse en terrenos de fidelidad arqueologizante a las fuentes originales. Una muestra está en la película Simón del desierto de Luis Buñuel. El director aragonés se informó con todas las noticias conservadas sobre la figura de Simeón el Estilita. A partir de ahí extrajo los datos que le interesaban acerca de su penintencia en soledad y de su relación con el mundo, los recreó empleando imágenes inspiradas en la primera iconografía cristiana y los organizó con pinceladas de humor personal. El resultado es un extraordinario film en el que se combina la erudición con la libertad creativa, ingredientes ambos propios de un auténtico autor.

Aus Ephesos liegen dank der jüngsten Grabungen in der Residenz südlich der Marienkirche, aber auch aus der Marienkirche selbst, dem sog. Byzantinischen Palast, dem Vediusgymnasium, dem Theater, sowie aus den Grabungen an der Kuretenstrasse, im Hanghaus 2 und im Lukasgrab eine mittlerweile beachtenswerte Anzahl an Fundkomplexen vor, die gesichert in das 7. Jh. datiert werden können. Besondere Bedeutung kommt allerdings der Residenz südlich der Marienkirche zu: Sie wird zum einen seit 2011 flächig freigelegt, zum anderen sind die Auffindungsbedingungen einmalig. Das Gebäude wurde nach bisherigem Kenntnisstand im 5. Jh. n. Chr. errichtet. In der zweiten Hälfte des 7. Jhs. n. Chr. wurde es durch einen Brand zerstört und offensichtlich überstürzt verlassen, sodass das Mobiliar, Haushaltsgeräte und Alltagsgegenstände, die vor der Zerstörung in Benutzung standen, zurückgelassen und begraben wurden. Dadurch ist ein einzigartiger Einblick in die materielle Kultur des 7. Jhs. n. Chr. möglich. Die kontextuelle Auswertung aller Fundgattungen ermöglicht eine umfassende und wohl für ganz Ephesos exemplarische Rekonstruktion des Alltagslebens der Oberschicht im 7. Jh. n. Chr. Das Feinkeramik- und Glasgefäßspektrum, aber auch die in der Residenz zuletzt in Verwendung gestandenen Amphoren, sowie die Küchenware und die Gebrauchskeramik bezeugen Speise- und Trinksitten, Kochgewohnheiten, aber auch Handelsaktivitäten und das Konsumverhalten einer – vermutlich adeligen – ephesischen Familie, der die Residenz im 7. Jh. gehörte. Besonderes Interesse verdienen außerdem Fundensembles, die Rückschlüsse auf die Funktionen der einzelnen Räume des Gebäudes zulassen. Bislang wurden rund 4.000 Münzen gefunden, aber auch prachtvolle Ausstattungsgegenstände wie ein ursprünglich an der Wand eines Raumes befestigtes, auf dem Boden aufgefundenes Schwert, zudem Schmuck, Accessoires von Kleidungsstücken und christlich Wallfahrtsandenken wie z. B. sogenannte Pilgerfläschchen. Gregory of Tours has, over the past few decades, become one of the most extensively studied authors of the Late Antiquity. Notwithstanding the progress achieved in the study of his historiographical work, his attitude towards eschatology has not yet been adequately addressed. Gregory refutes the arguments of his contemporaries who believe that the world is coming to an end, though he himself appears to question his own anti-apocalyptic attitude by registering the signs he understands as foretelling the coming apocalypse. Those apparently contradictory notions can be reconciled by the study of the way his Historiae are structured. Gregory, writing at the end of the sixth century, begins his narrative with the creation of the world and the fall of Adam and Eve.
