They had me at tomato...

Blue Willow Tomato Chutney... Never tried it until Thursday, delicious with the fried green tomatoes. I decided to make it using the Blue Willow recipe. YUMMY!

Tomato Chutney

2 (14 1/2-ounce) cans diced tomatoes, un-drained
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 small green bell peppers, diced
1 medium onion, diced
2 tablespoons ketchup
1 teaspoon pepper
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon hot sauce.
BRING all ingredients to a boil in a medium saucepan, stirring occasionally; reduce heat, and simmer, stirring occasionally, 1 1/2 to 2 hours or until thickened. Yield: 5 cups. Prep: 15 min., Cook: 1 1/2 to 2 hrs.

I subsitituted sweet'n low for sugar and the rest of the recipe I cut in half. I used diced tomatoes with green chilis and that made it a tad spicy. But... it was delicious. I made baked breaded zuchini intead of the fried green tomatoes. It was yummy!

I started out my Friday at Kirkland's returning some pillows and spent hours in there. Love that store! I went to Hobby Lobby to get some bright flowers for my Mama and Daddy's cemetery. Spent some time there changing out the flowers until it appeared I was being stalked... so I gathered my goods while talking to my daughter and headed to the car. Still have to go back to finish but will not go back there by myself. I had a nice visit with my oldest Brother and to the grocery store to pack Justin another box to ship to Afghanistan.

It was a beautiful day, 60 degrees, sun was shining and it felt like April:) Rain later today but hey, Friday was gorgeous.

Love to all and enjoy your Saturday! I WILL!

  3. Stalked? How dare they!!!! Good thinking though. I don't think you should go back alone anymore. I'll ride with you sometime. I'm not very busy next week with work. Maybe we can hook up. I bet daddy would go with you too. Then they'd be sorry if they stalk!

Can't wait to try the chutney. I know you'll share sometime.

  4. Well, I saw the chutney on the stove and it looked and smelled really good! I am loving the new recipes lately! I have another one to post this weekend!! Giving the crock pot a rest today (maybe). Yeah, Marshall is the one you need to take. I agree with Kells. He is NOT gonna take any crap from that fool! I did not like that. Love you and see you at basketball! I got to talk to Justin!!!

  5. Do what?? That statement threw me off as I was just reading along and Boom, STALKED?!? Are you sure? That's just plain weird. I'm so naive, I never think anything's gonna happen. But I'm glad you were on your toes. My mama would be proud. She gets on to me anytime I go out along (which I do ALL the time).
Love you and be safe and I love that tomato chutney, too. It's so very, very good.

  7. Love your new banner. I adore old weathered barns and building. I am going to do a post on them soon. Lots of old building in the Gold Country.

  8. Theresa,

    Your chutney sounds outstanding.
Reminds me of my grandmother's constantly working stovetop! Always making stuff like that from their homegrown veggies on the farm.
I too love the things in Kirklands. I worked there a century ago when I was in high school!!
You are so nice, an awesome aunt taking care of your Justin. He will not go hungry with all that his loving family sends him, and neither will the guys around him.
    Be careful at the cemetary!!!!
Danger is everywhere in this world, is it not???
    Take care.

  10. You were stalked at the Hobby Lobby? How scary.

Baked breaded zucchini sounds delicious. How nice that you had a fairly warm, sunny Friday. Hope you enjoyed it.

  11. Oh, now I see that you were stalked at the cemetary, not Hobby Lobby. In any case, be careful.

  12. Hey sweet girl...

Just wanted to stop by to say hello and see what you've been up to! Hope that my little note is finding you and your sweet family all doing well!

Girl, it's been ages since I've had Tomato Chutney! My Grandma used to always make it and I loved it! Thanks for sharing your recipe with us...the photo looks sooo mmmmyummy!!! Sounds like you've been keeping busy (as usual...hehe!) Ohhh...how I love Kirklands! I used to shop there all the time when I lived in Texas...Colorado doesn't have them! Boohoo! They have some of the prettiest things and very reasonably priced too! OMG...I can't believe that you had trouble in Hobby Lobby...that's just plain scary, my friend! Please do be careful! You know, I hardly go anywhere without my husband these days so that is one problem that I never run into! Sheeeshh...you just never know...there really are some real "nut-cases" out and about these days!

Well sweet girl, just wanted to say hello!

    Love ya,
    Chari

  13. OK Miss Girl-with-the-same-middle-name who didn't DO IT!!!! (hehehe oh the pressure's on you now!)

Now this question will probably only come from some blond in So Cal who has absolutely positively no clue what to do with "chutney". Do you eat it hot or cold? By itself or on/in something? It seems like it would be a relish dish- correct?

Fried green tomatoes. I think I had them once - in fact recently - yes I DID! They were good! Have you ever had a fried avocado? Sounds perfectly disgusting I know but TO! DIE! FOR! . . . sigh. I will probably never eat one again - I can only imagine how many calories and bad fat grams there were in it, but I had to try it at our County Fair about 3 years ago. Ya gotta try everything at least once - right?
Waiting on our rain here - it should be an interesting week. We'll see!
    Have a good one! Karen
