Translation and Multilingualism

This article brings together perspectives from world literature and translation studies to compare the international reception of two ‘glocal’ literary cases: Andrea Camilleri’s Montalbano books, and Elena Ferrante’s tetralogy L’amica geniale. The national and international success of these series raises important questions for scholars of translation studies, multilingualism, world literature and literary markets, and sheds light on the significance of different kinds of multilingualism in fiction and of their treatment in translation. The article addresses the following questions: how do monolingual book markets contain and discipline multilingual fiction? What happens when multilingual fiction travels through translation? How do we explain the present openness of the Anglo-American market to translated fiction with an emphasis on the vernacular? The author argues that while both Camilleri and Ferrante foreground cultural difference and linguistic incommensurability, the way in which they portray the experience of diglossia had an important impact in determining their national and international success as well as the route through which they achieved international visibility.

Språkmöten i skönlitteratur – perspektiv på litterär flerspråkighet är det första samlingsverket på svenska om temat litterär flerspråkighet, ett tema som under de senaste åren börjat intressera allt fler språk-, litteratur- och översättningsforskare både i Finland och utomlands. Syftet med boken är att ge en mångsidig och aktuell bild av flerspråkighet och språkväxling inom skönlitteratur såväl i ett empiriskt som i ett teoretisk-metodiskt perspektiv. Boken omfattar nio vetenskapliga artiklar där skribenterna anlägger olika perspektiv på fenomenet och samtidigt visar på forskningsbredden inom området. Boken är således ett tillskott till ett rätt nytt forskningsområde och den vill ge impulser till fortsatt forskning med ytterligare bredd och fördjupning.
Initiativet till boken har tagits av en grupp forskare vid Vasa universitet som medverkar i projektet Språkvariation i text, SVIT. Inom projektet kombineras perspektiv från de tre vetenskapsområdena språkvetenskap, översättningsvetenskap och litteraturvetenskap på ett inom den nordiska språkvetenskapen nytt sätt. Projektets syfte är att genom olika studier av texter som är skrivna på svenska och andra nordiska språk analysera den flerspråkiga komponenten i texter som representerar varierande genrer och tider och diskutera dess roll i den aktuella texten. Forskarna strävar även efter att utveckla en teoriram för hur två- och flerspråkiga kontexter återspeglas i texter. Forskarna koncentrerar sig i första hand på språkparet svenska och finska, men även andra språk och varieteter ingår i analyserna. Doktorander och andra forskare arbetar med sina avhandlingar och delprojekt inom SVIT. Utöver forskare vid Vasa universitet deltar också associerade forskare vid Göteborgs universitet, Helsingfors universitet och Stockholms universitet i verksamheten. Genom kvalitativ närläsning och analys av olika texter identifierar och kartlägger forskarna språklig variation och flera språks samexistens i enskilda verk. Studierna kännetecknas även av komparativa inslag. Jämförelser görs mellan olika enskilda författare och deras verk liksom mellan olika länder, främst Finland och Sverige. Både individuell och samhällelig två- och flerspråkighet fokuseras såväl inom de empiriska analyserna som i konstruerandet av en teoretisk modell för att analysera språklig variation i skönlitterära texter överlag.
Boken är indelad i tre avdelningar med tre artiklar var. Den första avdelningen består av artiklar som uppmärksammar den teoretiska och metodologiska diskussionen inom området. Teoridiskussionerna i avdelningen tar främst avstamp i aktuell två- och flerspråkighetsforskning. Siv Björklunds artikel handlar om kodväxlingens lämplighet som potentiell komponent i en analysmodell för litterär flerspråkighet, Hans Landqvist och Sofia Tingsell diskuterar och utvidgar tidigare existerande analysmodeller i kritisk belysning och Julia Tidigs ger en inblick i kritiken i massmedierna kring språkväxling i två finlandssvenska romaner. 
Den andra avdelningen innehåller tre empiriska studier av litterär flerspråkighet i finlandssvensk litteratur: Bodil Haagensen skriver om språkväxlingen i Kjell Westös Helsingforsskildringar, Maria Kvist diskuterar flerspråkighet i illustrationer i moderna finlandssvenska bilderböcker och Maud Rantala redogör för resultaten av en läsarundersökning där hon undersökt ungdomars reaktioner på texter som involverar flera språk. 
Den tredje avdelningen innehåller artiklar som utgående från olika språkkonstellationer behandlar hur översättare hanterar språkväxling vid översättning: Mona Enell-Nilssons och Minna Hjorts artikel handlar om översättning av svordomar och skällsord i den svenske författaren Jens Lapidus författarskap, Harry Lönnroth granskar språkväxlingen i den finska författaren Eila Pennanens historiska roman och dess svenska översättning (finska–svenska) och Sanna Pakarinen undersöker samma fenomen utgående från den svenske författaren Bengt Pohjanens roman och dess finska översättning (svenska– finska). 
Boken avslutas med ett efterord skrivet av den finlandssvenske författaren Lars Sund, som också deltog i en av SVIT-forskarna arrangerad paneldiskussion vid Vasa Littfest den 8 november 2014.

This collection of essays tackles the issues that arise when multilingualism meets translation and discusses the findings with a particular focus on Slavonic migrant languages. Despite its high relevance from both the theoretical and the applied perspective, the intersection of multilingualism and translation has been rather neglected in international research on multilingualism. This volume intends to create a new angle within this wide field of research and to systematize the most relevant approaches and ideas on this topic in international Slavonic studies.

Since I have known that Indonesia is one of the success examples of democratic nation, I’m interested to arrange my master thesis of M.Hum about the quality of English and Arabic UUD 45 TTs to help promoting the constitution to the world. This paper is presented in front of my class to solve some of my problems that are hanging out in the air. There are six problematic questions that I have tried to answer. Some of them are integrated to the other. First and second answer is that MTC attempts to encounter the phenomenon that is described by House & Rehbein (2004: 41) as multilingual communication mediated by translation. Third, fourth, and fifth answer is that grade quality written by number and letter and its meaning is based on Machali’s book (2009: 156-157). The sixth answer is that explaining the factors that influence the given value.

Sound instrumentation of poetic speech as one of the drivers producing direct influence on the emersion and genesis of sound symbolism in the tissue of poetic texts has always been, and remains a subject of vivid scientific interest and polemics among linguists and literary theorists of both the past and nowadays. A correlation between phonetic significance and semantic meaning still remains a subject of clarification and more precise definition. Those who tried to find a correlation between the formal and the notional used to apply for studying appropriate stylistic means of sound arrangement of poetical works, such as paronymic attraction, parallelism, and poetical etymology. In the later research works it is stated that while the stylistic means foregrounded by the precursors are comprehended as those deliberately used by poets to their full extent, the area of the subconscious mind should be considered of at least equal importance in this regard, as the latter produces great influence on the ways of artistic imagery formation as well as ability of its further perception and appreciation. In this sense it appears that the connection between sounding and meaning, or sound symbolism, can hardly be revealed in monolingual poetic sample. Contemporary linguistics has no doubt about the fact, that sounds of speech, even spelled separately, do have an ability of forming non-sound associations and images. The aim of this article is to find links which unite a unique poetic whole with its multilingual translations.

The role of the translator is not really distinct from that of the communicator in any typical intercultural communication/verbal exchange encounter. In both cases, the translator and the communicator are called upon to deliver what is intended in the written or spoken language code. That being said, the task on which they are both required to focus is the same or similar, as it assumes that each possesses a high level of competence in two linguistic and cultural systems in order to accomplish the very task they are called upon to perform.

Therefore, this paper aims to highlight the family resemblance or interconnectedness between the process of translation and that of the intercultural communication encounter ; and to emphasize the merits and benefits of treating translation as an act of intercultural or interlingual communication since the constraints faced by the translator are quite similar to those faced by the communicator.
