Nanni Moretti

In 21th century, the word "carnival" refers to a series of touristic activities which are related to feasting, masquerading, and merrymaking in specific cities like Venice, Rio or Cologne. Contemporary carnivals typically involve parades and public celebrations, with certain elements like masks, circus and open air parties. The word's etymology shows that "carnival" is derived from the Italian word; carne + vale, alteration of earlier carnelavare (Latin carnelevarium o r carnem levare) which means the removal(lavare) of meat(carne) from flesh. In medieval Europe, it was the continuation of the Roman Catholic festival tradition; known as the "farewell to meat or farewell to the flesh". Carnival festivities and the comic spectacles had an important place in the life of the medieval man. Some of the most well-known traditions, including carnival parades and masquerading, were first recorded in medieval Italy. The carnival of Venice, was first mentioned in

"Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma" (1975) di Pier Paolo Pasolini e "Todo modo" (1976) di Elio Petri: due film gemelli ed estremi, dalla medesima tonalità apocalittica e dall’identico destino censorio. Due film che si trovano uniti anche nel confronto implicito con il pensiero di Michel Foucault, proprio in quei mesi impegnato in una svolta significativa nei suoi lavori con il passaggio da "Sorvegliare e Punire" (1975) a "La volontà di sapere" (1976). Attraverso l’analisi comparata dei due film e di alcuni passaggi del filosofo francese dedicati al concetto di potere pastorale, questo libro si concentra su una fase cruciale della storia della cultura critica europea, nella quale prende compiutamente forma, all’incrocio tra arte e filosofia, la riflessione sul ruolo della verità nell’esercizio del potere. Un momento originario che influenzerà ampiamente la teoria critica successiva nonché gran parte del cinema italiano più recente, da Nanni Moretti a Paolo Sorrentino e Matteo Garrone, e che propone alcune chiavi di lettura decisive per comprendere la nostra attuale ossessione per il vero e l’autentico nei comportamenti e nei sentimenti quotidiani.

Questo saggio sostiene che c'è stato un abuso della nozione di 'crisi' nel contesto critico italiano, il quale ha spesso trascurato aspetti cruciali inerenti la produzione cinematografica e proponendo analisi alquanto schematiche, spesso fortemente ideologizzate, rispetto al rapporto tra estetica e politica. Il saggio critica inoltre il legame causale, proposto da alcuni critici italiani, tra la comparsa di un'estetica postmoderna nel cinema italiano e un generale declino delle strategie politiche emancipatorie nell'arte. Una breve panoramica sulla produzione cinematografica recente dimostra la necessità di non dissociare il giudizio di 'valore' di un determinato periodo della storia cinematografica nazionale dal suo particolare contesto di produzione; in termini estetici concetti quali 'realismo' o 'postmodernismo' dovrebbero essere intesi come 'modi' narrativi che possono essere più o meno efficaci in termini politici secondo i diversi contesti storici di ricezione. Come verrà dimostrato attraverso una breve analisi di Palombella rossa di Nanni Moretti, Gomorra di Matteo Garrone e Il divo di Paolo Sorrentino, da una parte queste due modalità possono coesistere nella stessa opera; dall'altra una particolare idea di impegno politico emerge evidente in film in cui la modalità narrativa dominante è proprio quella auto-referenziale, metanarrativa e postmoderna.

Among the comments made last night, one in particular was pursued after our discussion. Several of our viewers underlined the fact that Moretti criticizes the tendency of the Roman suburbia of the eighties and nineties to no longer go to the cinema or to the pizzeria for a night out. The scene brought to my attention was the one where Moretti is riding through the suburbs of Rome on his Vespa in the first episode "On My Vespa." At some point he stops to talk to a man who is getting out of his car, and is holding VHS cassettes in his hand. Moretti says he is terrified by the smell of VHS cassettes, pizza boxes, and slippers. It is obvious that Moretti, as a film director, is concerned with the fact that the cinemas are not as full as they used to be, and even when they are American films are dominating over the Italian product. This is eloquently expressed when he meets Jennifer Beals from the film Flashdance (1983). He first says the film changed his life, and then adds that since he saw it he has wanted nothing more than to learn how to dance like Jennifer Beals. As many may know, the actress did not do the dancing in the film. Moretti was probably aware of this and in a very comical way expresses the effect of American cinema in Italy. That is, what is fiction in American cinema has in many ways become a model for reality in Italy. Flashdance is one version of the American dream: a young girl with no formal training in dancing, gets a chance to study dance at one of the most prestigious dance schools in America. This film, Moretti seems to imply, is one of many that has dominated the imagination of Italians. In the scene where he actually meets the real Jennifer Beals, it is not by chance that Moretti chooses to be portrayed as being "off centre." It is as if he were commenting on the extent to which the Italian masses have given themselves to an idea of American culture filtered through cinema and TV.

Andreotti, Berlusconi, Moro, Mussolini: ciascuno incarnazione di una specifica immagine del potere, tutti protagonisti di film che hanno segnato l’immaginario recente. Il cinema biografico è in continua espansione e il mondo della politica cattura sempre di più il suo interesse, soprattutto in Italia. Anziché considerarlo un semplice fenomeno commerciale, questo libro propone di pensare il biografico-politico come l’espressione più tipica del cinema contemporaneo: è qui infatti che si possono comprendere con chiarezza gli incroci tra estetica e politica, le strategie di costruzione del senso comune, le forme di autorappresentazione di una comunità nazionale. E se l’intreccio originale di vita, storia e politica definisce il carattere peculiare del pensiero italiano, il cinema biografico-politico è allora il luogo più fecondo per riflettere sulla memoria storica e sul futuro della nazione.

The religious landscape in Europe is changing dramatically. While the authority of institutional religion has weakened, a growing number of people now desire individualized religious and spiritual experiences, finding the self-complacency of secularism unfulfilling. The "crisis of religion" is itself a form of religious life. A sense of complex, subterraneous interaction between religious, heterodox, secular and atheistic experiences has thus emerged, which makes the phenomenon all the more fascinating to study, and this is what Religion in Contemporary European Cinema does. The book explores the mutual influences, structural analogies, shared dilemmas, as well as the historical roots of such a "post-secular constellation" as seen through the lens of European cinema. Bringing together scholars from film theory and political science, ethics and philosophy of religion, philosophy of film and theology, this volume casts new light on the relationship between the religious and secular experience after the death of the death of God.

L'Italia degli ultimi sessant'anni ha attraversato numerosi cambiamenti dal punto di vista storico, politico, e socio-culturale. Il cinema e la letteratura riflettono e documentano questi momenti di transizione e di crisi proponendo una interpretazione di come la società italiana sia arrivata al suo attuale momento di emergenza politica e culturale. Attraverso lo studio di alcuni degli autori e registi che hanno popolato la scena culturale italiana a cavallo di due secoli, questo volume intende investigare in maniera concreta la coscienza letteraria e cinematografica di una nazione che continua ad esprimere memorie del passato mentre tenta di risolvere le ansie e le irrequietudini del presente.

This article presents a new reading of Nanni Moretti's latest films through the lens of Maurizio Ferraris' New Realism. While Moretti's first productions 'encounter' reality in order to bring to the screen a critical image of Italy that is charged with political implications, the last films define a new relation with the real that is centered on the concept of "unamendability" of reality. This opens up new forms of engagement that go beyond the strictly political.

Pasolini e Moretti sono due registi-intellettuali di generazioni diverse, considerati figure di grande rilievo per la portata delle loro opere. Le similitudini che li accomunano sono molte e notevoli altrettanto quanto le differenze che li dividono: controverso e scandaloso il primo, meno "anomalo" ma non meno innovativo il secondo, sono entrambi registi politici dichiaratamente comunisti e capaci di intuire il futuro. Perché studiarli insieme? Anzitutto per l"ottica in cui si pongono nei confronti della società, per le loro riflessioni sul ruolo dell"intellettuale e per l"importanza attribuita da entrambi al linguaggio e alla comunicazione. Poi, per il fatto che Moretti ha apertamente riconosciuto fra i suoi punti di riferimento cinematografici proprio Pasolini. Quest"ultima ragione può essere presa come spunto per cercare quanto c"è di pasoliniano nei lavori di Moretti, a livello di pensiero e di tecnica cinematografica. Caro diario (1994), in particolare, è un omaggio esplicito a Pasolini, che probabilmente va persino oltre le intenzioni iniziali del regista romano, e va pertanto tenuto in particolare considerazione Il presente lavoro è composto da quattro parti. Nella prima, si discute la figura di Pasolini. La seconda parte è un breve excursus su Moretti, le sue idee, le sue opere. La terza parte contiene l"analisi di Caro Diario. Nelle conclusioni, infine, dai punti salienti dell"analisi si trarranno alcuni spunti di riflessione. 1

The last 4 films directed by Nanni Moretti − La stanza del figlio (2001), Il caimano (2006), Habemus papam (2011), and Mia madre (2016) − have all made the top 20 of Italian cinema’s box office results in France in the last 20 years. This invites further inquiry into the circulation and impact of Moretti in the French cultural context, as an emblematic case study of how the notion of the “Italian auteur” is constructed abroad. Going beyond the success of his films at the Cannes Film Festival and the institutional retrospectives (such as the one at the Cinémathèque Française in September 2011), we will focus on domains that are less known but equally influential. The visibility of Moretti, in fact, depends on a larger media presence than that of the specialist press (such as the numerous articles in Cahiers du cinéma and Positif): TV airings of his films, interviews in various media, his presence in newspapers and cultural magazines, his festival participations, marketing strategies and theatrical distribution, and so on. This paper’s objective, then, is twofold: on the one hand, to trace the multiple ways in which Moretti’s work circulates in France, including theatrical and televised distribution; on the other, to highlight the forms of construction of his “star” image in this specific cultural context. For these purposes, in the first two sections we adopt a media industry perspective, based on quantitative data of film distribution and television broadcasts. A second part, composed of sections 3 and 4, focuses on qualitative sources through a cultural studies methodology. This integrated approach aims to investigate how industrial strategies intersect with the cultural repercussions of Italian cinema’s circulation abroad, through a case study characterized by multiple exchanges between Italy and France.1

Ewa Mazierska and Laura Rascaroli’s The Cinema of Nanni Moretti: Dreams and Diaries is a welcome volume. The first book-length study on Moretti in English, it takes its place in a remarkably sparse field of writing on the Italian film-maker (even the bibliography in Italian is slim, with just a couple of monographs, including one from the familiar Castoro Cinema series already into its third edition).

Looking at media coverage of three earlier, very prominent murder cases, Murder Made in Italy explores the cultural issues raised by the murders and how the reflect developments in Italian civil society over a period reaching from 1989-2011. This is Chapter 7, and is part of the book's section devoted to "Filicide" and the case against Annamaria Franzoni for the bludgeoning death of her three-year-old son, Samuele. This particular chapter explores spectacular mourning, with readings of a variety of documents and, very attentively, Sandro Veronesi's Caos Calmo and  Nanni Moretti's La stanza del figlio.

Chez Nanni Moretti, la cinéphilie est partout et prend toutes les formes : dans tous ses films, il est fait référence à d'autres films, qu'ils soient simplement cités, qu'ils fassent l'objet de débats, qu'ils soient rapidement montrés ou largement convoqués. Sa cinéphilie est tout à fait originale car interprétant lui-même les personnages principaux de ses films – et des personnages en partie autobiographiques –, il peut dire dans son cinéma ce qu'il pense du cinéma des autres : ce qu'en tant qu'exploitant d'une salle de cinéma indépendant à Rome, il aime du cinéma actuel (dans Le Jour de la Première de Close Up, 1996, on le voit faire les cent pas en espérant fébrilement que le film de Kiarostami qu'il projette fera recette), ce qu'en tant que cinéaste arrivé dans la profession en amateur, il a aimé du cinéma bis (dans Je suis un autarcique, 1976, Michele a des discussions passionnées contre le cinéma érotique et pour le cinéma porno), ce qu'en tant que spectateur-lambda il a aimé des grandes fresques hollywoodiennes (dans Bianca, 1983, les personnages sont tous absorbés par Le Docteur Jivago de David Lean, 1965, et notamment par la fin du film où Omar Sharif reconnaît Julie Andrews mais est terrassé par une crise cardiaque en essayant de la rejoindre), ce qu'en tant qu'Italien il a aimé (ou pas) de son cinéma national (dans Ecce bombo, 1978, Moretti lance un agressif : « On n'est pas dans un film d'Alberto Sordi ! », soulignant son dégoût de la comédie à l'italienne).

In this chapter, Benini examines Nanni Moretti’s relationship with grief in his latest movie Mia madre, produced in 2015. Moving from a diaristic imprinting, Moretti projects his mourning onto a female figure, the filmmaker Margherita, creating two intersecting triangles of characters. One triangle is a female genealogy between the mother, Ada, the daughter, Margherita, and the granddaughter, Livia. The second triangle consists of Moretti’s own diffracted alter-egos: Margherita, her brother Giovanni and her most prominent actor, Barry Huggins, with an interesting gender roles’ inversion between Margherita and her brother, who is the mother’s caretaker. Margherita lives in a liminal dimension porous to the intermittences of memory, imagination, and the subconscious. Moretti creates oneiric sequences that are uncannily real, giving the sense of a present enmeshed with the memories of the past and the fear for the future. Nous avons déjà traité, dans le numéro 11, de l'impureté comme spécificité cinématographique -non pas une curiosité caractéristique du cinéma, mais bien son essence même. Rappelons ici que nous en donnions pour définition la capacité du cinéma de convoquer un art en l'arrachant à sa destination initiale, selon un mouvement local ou global du film (ou dans un nouage du local et du global).

Los estudios sobre autoficción han experimentado un notable crecimiento en los últimos treinta años. El objetivo de este trabajo es ahondar en el estudio de esta teoría en la película Aprile, del director Nanni Moretti. Para ello, se realizará un breve acercamiento previo necesario a lo escrito sobre esta tendencia, y se utilizará el modelo descrito por el francés Vincent Colonna para realizar el análisis de la autoficción en la película del creador italiano.

The proposal aims at giving a new reading of Nanni Moretti's latest films through the lens of Maurizio Ferraris' New Realism. If Moretti's first productions 'encounter' reality in order to bring to the screen a critical image of Italy charged with political implications, the last films define a new relation with the real that is centred on the concept of unamendability of reality. This opens up new forms of engagement that go beyond the strictly political. Many elements connect the early films of Nanni Moretti to Italian Neorealism: the encounter with a reality that was not showed on screen before, the time of " visual emergency " in which the films were produced (post-Fascist Italy and the crisis-ridden nation of the 1970s), the low budget nature of the productions (that in turn had an influence on the cinematic language), different filmic elements (the gaze of the child, the use of non-professional actors, Rome, the documentary style). Throughout the years, Moretti and his 'cinema of encounter' were able to create an original representation of Italy that comprised elements of radical criticism. The latest production of Moretti, instead, includes films that deal with life changing events: the death of a son, a separation and an encounter, an escape, the sickness and death of a mother. The characters complete a transformative journey that redefines their place in the world, their relation with the real. In these stories the protagonist (a grieving father, a failed filmmaker, a newly elected Pope and a grieving son) accepts the unamendability of reality 1 : the knowledge that reality cannot be corrected leaves the way to a new life.

Cinema, as act of resistance, opposes the standardization characterizing the present audiovisual universe, proposing alternative solutions to conciliatory representation of world spread by mass-media. The political and ethical value of these images - antithetical to clichés in Deleuze's theory - is a pivotal feature that analysis should point out. This is one of the main goals of the different theoretical inquiries developed in these last years around cinema studies, whose ultimate aim is to remark the difference between the everyday praxis of the rule and the singular dimension of exception. More deeply, it seems that the most radical examples could be found in directors who pursue a constant comparison with this imagery, creating therefore devices able to reflect on sense construction mechanisms and strategies for representing the present. These theoretical objects - which carry out a perpetual movement between theory and praxis, between a general system and a local one - are elected places to testify theories efficacy and, at the same time, to implement analytical tools; such a process interpolates analysis and critics in order to achieve a broader comprehension of these texts meaning (Barthes, Greimas) and their feedback over the iconosphere (Lotman).
My proposal is an attempt of investigation of filmic text through an interdisciplinary approach which could interpolate Semiotics and Aesthetics, focusing on the political value inherent artistic experience. The starting point is the specific notion of "re-mediation" (Bolter&Grusin), seen as peculiarity of contemporary audiovisual dimension. Although it could remind former concept of "intertextuality", "re-mediation" introduces the idea of comparison between media (i.d. system of rules, instead of specific device; Sontag), extending its effectiveness. The aim of this work is therefore to probe how cinema works in relation to those rhetoric strategies and devices (Foucault, Agamben) which propose a "normal" and "agreeing" representation of society and the present (Rancière).
Contemporary Italian cinema represents the chartered ground of this reconnaissance. As a matter of fact, in its more self-conscious expressions, it seems to have renew its political attitude, tracing back Sixties and Seventies heritage of Pasolini, Rosi, Petri. Nanni Moretti, Matteo Garrone, Paolo Sorrentino, Alina Marazzi and Marco Bellocchio are directors who, more than other, have tried to reflect on conditions of representation of the real conceived by mass-mediatic system. In doing this, they oppose stratified and complex images, which demand to the beholder a cognitive work, to stereotyped and "already-given" ones: for instance, the different masks adopted to represent the figure of Silvio Berlusconi in Il caimano by Nanni Moretti, the confrontation with the historical or social inquiry in Gomorra and Il divo by Garrone and Sorrentino respectively, the use of found-footage in Marazzi's films, the iconic efficacy into a collective imagery construction in Bellocchio's Vincere. Through an analysis of these texts, the challenge consists therefore in finding those distinctive elements which could give an account of that ethical dimension conceived as image's double capability: "to declare itself in lack of witness, and to invent the right forms to assume the whole debt" (Montani).

Da dove deriva la forza del brand Italia? Simon Anholt mette in evidenza quanto il fenomeno di brandizzazione del nostro Paese sia legato a prodotti culturali e personaggi di alta, canonizzata e globalmente riconosciuta qualità. Prodotti di consumo come Gucci o Alessi, destinazioni vacanziere come la Toscana o la costiera amalfitana, e personaggi legati al nostro patrimonio artistico-culturale come Leonardo, Dante e Michelangelo fanno parte del palco di promotori riconoscibili del brand Italia all’estero. Nell’epoca della rivoluzione digitale e del nation branding, autori e scrittori italiani si muovono all’interno di ecosistemi transmediali diventando veri e propri “marchi umani”. Se infatti in parte la cosiddetta Ferrante fever che ha conquistato i mercati culturali transnazionali ruota naturalmente intorno all’enigma legato al nome d’autrice, anche quello che è stato definito il brand Gomorra è difficilmente scindibile da un brand Saviano, determinato dallo scrittore che legittima ogni produzione transmediale con la propria immagine e la propria presenza. Così, anche il successo internazionale de Il commissario Montalbano non può essere analizzato separatamente dall’affermazione all’estero della voce autoriale di Andrea Camilleri, e, andando ancora più indietro nel tempo, si può notare come la figura di Umberto Eco, già conosciuta a livello internazionale quantomeno in ambito accademico, a partire dal successo mondiale de Il nome della rosa abbia contribuito a plasmare un modello di romanzo storico facilmente riconoscibile e spendibile sul mercato estero come marchio di italianità del prodotto culturale. Anche nello studio del cinema e dei prodotti audiovisivi, pertanto, l’italianità evocata nel titolo va analizzata come oggetto di rappresentazione che investe sia i testi filmici sia la costruzione dell’immagine pubblica dei registi. In che modo gli autori italiani contemporanei si fanno portatori di un brand riconoscibile in prospettiva transnazionale? In che modo riescono a legittimarsi in riferimento a logiche di marketing, reputation building o economia della cultura? Un esempio: la riflessione critica sull’italianità operata spesso da Nanni Moretti diventa un caso di studio paradigmatico se rapportato alla circolazione dei suoi film all’estero (soprattutto in Francia) e alla spendibilità del suo personale brand d’autore. Per affrontare queste e altre questioni, i gruppi di ricerca della quattro università coinvolte nel progetto PRIN Italian Na(rra)tives: la circolazione internazionale del brand-Italia attraverso i media hanno invitato esperti di letteratura, editoria e cinematografia italiana. Il workshop si terrà il 23 marzo 2021 dalle ore 17.00 alle 19.30 e verrà ospitato sulla piattaforma Zoom e trasmesso in diretta streaming sulla pagina Facebook della Consulta Universitaria del Cinema.
