Modern & Contemporary Latin American Art

Tarsila do Amaral's paintings of rural Brazilian landscapes present a natural world replete with vibrant colors, whimsical creatures, and luxuriant plant life. By co-opting aspects of surrealism's visual lexicon, particularly biomorphism, Amaral created timeless myths that in their strangeness and indecipherability conveyed the uncertainly of the moment. When she exhibited these paintings in Paris in 1928, Amaral's adoption of surrealist notions of transformation, ambiguity and uncertainly was on full display. Her landscapes of this period present dichotomies between the rational and the irrational, the natural and the artificial, order and chaos, thereby challenging Parisians' imagined construct of Brazil, and creating an original and enigmatic interpretation of the natural world.

El artículo ofrece una valoración inédita del recorrido internacional de Max Jiménez Huete (1900-1947), figura nuclear para el arte de vanguardia costarricense y centroamericano. A pesar de haber sido marginado del relato canónico del arte moderno en América Latina, se busca esclarecer una cronología crítica de su itinerancia, permitiendo sistematizar el estu-dio de su obra y establecer una base documental rigurosa que vincule su proyecto estético con las vanguardias europeas, norteamericanas y latinoamericanas. Así, se hace énfasis en tres momentos radicales de su progresión artística: a) su formación en París (1922-1925); b) su contacto con la cultura española (1929-1931/1933); c) su madurez artística en Cuba (1935 -1945).

The article offers an unprecedented assessment of the international trajectory of Max Jiménez Huete (1900-1947), a seminal figure in Costa Rican and Central American avant-garde art in the 20th century. Despite being marginalized from the canonical narrative of modern art in Latin America, the aim is to elucidate a critical chronology of his travels, allowing for a systematic study of his work and establishing a rigorous documentary basis that links his aesthetic project with European, North American, and Latin American avant-gardes. Thus, it focuses on three key moments of his artistic progression: a) his training in Paris (1922-1925); b) his contact with Spanish culture (1929-1931/1933); c) his artistic maturity in Cuba (1935-1945).Keywords: Max Jiménez, Costa Rican art, Central American art, Latin American Art.

Este artículo estudia la inclusión de las mujeres en la política de la Buena Vecindad examinando en particular el rol de la directora del Museo de Arte de San Francisco, Grace Morley, una reconocida experta de los Estados Unidos.  Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial el gobierno de los Estados Unidos desplegó un conjunto de estrategias culturales para la creación de vínculos con los países de América del Sur, en particular políticas de intercambio y visualización del arte latinoamericano. Desde 1940, Grace Morley se incorporó como asesora a las actividades de la OCIAA (oficina de Asuntos Interamericanos, oficina liderada por Nelson Rockefeller) y en 1942 diseñó una exhibición itinerante del Arte Latinoamericano Contemporáneo con el propósito de que circulara por diversas instituciones en Estados Unidos. Este artículo describe cómo llevo el proyecto a pesar de los contratiempos de la falta de fondos y la poca atención de la OCIAA. El artículo analiza en detalle este proyecto y su competencia con otras iniciativas de la Oficina de Asuntos Interamericanos. Finalmente, describiremos el papel de Morley como una de las representantes más activas del mundo de las artes durante la política del Buen Vecino (1939-1945). Examinaremos su rol en tanto mujer y especialista en un contexto en el que la gestión cultural y política de la diplomacia cultural estaba en manos de hombres, y las mujeres ocupaban roles subordinados como secretarias o asesoras. Revisaremos los entramados y apoyos personales e institucionales en su tarea ligados a su reputación académica.

Es ist eine häufig erzählte Geschichte, dass Paris am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts das Weltzentrum der Kunst gewesen sei. Dieses Buch fragt danach, welchen Beitrag Ausstellungen zwischen 1921 und 1946 zur Entwicklung und Verbreitung dieser Erzählung geleistet haben. Es beleuchtet Ausstellungen in den Cafés des Pariser Viertels Montparnasse und die internationalen Ausstellungen der „École de Paris“. So treten konkurrierende Sichtweisen auf Paris als Zentrum und Kreuzungspunkt der Kunstwelt hervor. Dieses Buch bietet erstmals einen chronologischen sowie topographischen Überblick über diese Ausstellungen. Zudem löst es die kunsthistorische Forschung zur „École de Paris“ aus ihrer auf Paris fokussierten Perspektive und analysiert seinen Gegenstand im Horizont transkultureller Dynamiken.

It is a frequently told story that Paris was the world center of art at the beginning of the 20th century. This book asks what contribution exhibitions between 1921 and 1946 made to the development and dissemination of this narrative. It highlights exhibitions in the cafés of the Montparnasse neighborhood of Paris and the international exhibitions of the "École de Paris." Competing views of Paris as the center and crossroads of the art world thus emerge. This book offers for the first time a chronological as well as topographical overview of these exhibitions. It also detaches art historical research on the "École de Paris" from its Paris-focused perspective and analyzes its subject in the horizon of transcultural dynamics.

Tropical: Stories from Southeast Asia and Latin America opened on 18 November 2023 and ran at the National Gallery Singapore (NGS) until 24 March 2024. NGS's website states that the exhibition is "the first large-scale museum exhibition to take a comparative approach across two regions united by their shared struggles against colonialism", comprising over 200 paintings, sculptures, prints and installations. The exhibition proceeds not always via direct formal or informal engagements between artists but by "an alchemy of shared narratives" (Teo Hui Min). Tropical endeavours to complicate the essential link between modernism and modernity by reflecting on how the "accursed European and American influence" is "absorbed" (Hélio Oiticica) into the local and indigenous, resulting in what might be called miscegenated art. El número doble Miradas 5 y 6 aborda los cuerpos y las modas en las Américas desde diversas perspectivas y analiza tanto los conceptos del cuerpo que se han transmitido artísticamente, como las reflexiones artísticas sobre ellas. La historia de la vestimenta en las Américas,
al igual que el entendimiento del cuerpo, están marcados por una historia
de interdependencias globales que se hace visible en las técnicas andinas
de tejido y no termina con los actuales blogs de fashion o los iconos en las redes sociales. Los traslapes híbridos de tradiciones europeas e indígenas, las referencias afroamericanas y asiáticas, así como las redes globales de comercio y distribución de mercancías en contextos políticos e históricos cambiantes hicieron surgir modas específicas del vestir y del cuerpo, facilitaron semantizaciones diferenciadas y las pusieron en una relación muchas veces llena de tensiones. Éstas se pueden apreciar en los medios visuales y en las obras artísticas, en cada contexto específico.

Resumen: Alrededor de 1930 el pintor argentino Antonio Berni desarrolla el "Nuevo Realismo". Dentro de esta corriente ejecuta grandes composiciones, con grupos de campesinos y obreros como la obra que aquí presentamos: "Chacareros" (1935). El soporte está constituido por la unión de varias telas de arpillera precedentes de sacos de azúcar cosidas entre sí. Su elección no fue una anécdota, sino la búsqueda consciente de un recurso expresivo. El importante deterioro de las fibras, ponía en riesgo la supervivencia de esta pintura, por lo que una intervención se hacía necesaria. Este artigo tem como objetivo principal analisar como Marta Traba, grande intelectual e crítica de arte latino-americana, tratou no início da década de 1960 a questão do comprometimento do artista com o fazer artístico e o meio social na América Latina. Para isso, analisa-se a sua obra intitulada “La pintura nueva en Latinoamerica”, publicada em 1961, entendida como um dos primeiros trabalhos de maior densidade que a autora estabeleceu reflexões comparativas sobre a pintura na América Latina. Dar forma al tiempo: dialogues with pre-Columbian heritage in Contemporary art in Peru and Bolivia The author proposes a review of the history of contemporary Peruvian and Bolivian art from the perspective of a profound relationship with antiquity ranging from the indigenist rediscovery of the beginning of the 20th century, with decisive antecedents at the beginning of the Republican period, to the present day. Antiquity is proposed here as a guiding thread in the development of a national language that effectively combines receptivity to Western artistic proposals with a conscious and calibrated choice of artistic and architectural motifs from local antiquity, eschewing the automatism of copying from its earliest manifestations.

Elisa Bergel Melo, artista venezolana residenciada en República Dominicana, ha desarrollado una práctica en la que confluyen aspectos de su propia biografía con el modo como se cuestiona la manera de producir imágenes. Siendo hija de migrantes y viviendo ella misma procesos de migración variados desde su adolescencia –primero internamente en Venezuela, y luego hacia Estados Unidos y países del área del Caribe– el movimiento físico del cruzar fronteras se ha convertido también en metáfora del desplazamiento y traslado de las estrategias que utiliza para hacer obra.

Four men sit on a street curb in the early afternoon. They are roughly dressed in the worn, generic manner of the lower classes. Their collective attention is fixed on the eastward passing of cars and trucks through the intersection of Heroes de Granaditas and Florida, ten blocks north of the old city center in Mexico City. At the same instant as the vehicles in the six lanes of Heroes de Granaditas roll to a stop at the red traffic signal of Florida, the four men, joined by three others from the opposite curb, run into the throng of cars. As they approach the drivers, the seven men lift short-handled, wide-headed hammers and vigorously pound them through the empty air on to imaginary surfaces. The signal changes to green and the hammer men return to their places on the curb to wait for the next red light to stop their audience again. This is a ritual of signs, all of which work together, all of which are understood only in the context of this particular intersection in Mexico City. The changing traffic signals are understood worldwide, but only here do they trigger a response from the hammer men that depends on the meaning of the signals, but which opposes that meaning. The hammer men go into motion on the red signal and stop on the green because it is only when the traffic is stopped that they can effect their purpose. Because the action is so specific as to movement, timing, and location, it must mean something quite specific in the geographic context of this street intersection, and it does. The people in the cars understand what the hammering means because it is happening here, in the center of the barrio (ghetto) of Tepito. Were it to happen elsewhere, the same gesture could produce panic at the prospect of attack by hammerwielding hoodlums. In Tepito, the behavior is a ritual which, when decoded as a sign operating in the code of this barrio, means something quite particular and harmless. As the street Florida continues north of Heroes de Granaditas, the first block on the east side is filled with the sound of hammers striking metal. In a double-length 2019 Dance Chronicle article, Francisco Sagasti surveys a history of what he calls "computer choreography": uses of computers for staged dance, with a particular emphasis on the use of computers to choreograph dance through rudimentary types of "AI." 1 Moreover, he submits, in 1968, he led such a project at Pennsylvania State University (where he was pursuing a doctorate in operations research), writing software that scored a student-performed dance. Sagasti expresses boundless faith in computers, predicting that "interactions between human and machine intelligence will bootstrap each other, opening new and extraordinary opportunities for joint advance." 2 As suggested by his sanguine tone, Sagasti is no typical performance scholar. He may not be the first engineer to write for Dance Chronicle, but I expect he is the first former chief of strategic planning for the World Bank, first former chairman of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Science and Technology, and first sitting deputy of the Congreso de la República del Perú to have done so. In fact, one year after the publication of his article, Sagasti, as the intellectual leader of the center-right technocratic Purple Party, assumed office as president of Peru in the aftermath of a failed far-right coup. Giovanna M. Bassi Cendra analyzes Argentinean-Czechoslovakian artist Gyula Kosice’s installation La ciudad hidroespacial (1946, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) as a challenge to the notion of a functional city, an idea jointly conceived by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier and the International Congress of Modern Architecture in 1933. Critical of the core principles that guided functionalist architecture and urbanism (i.e., dwelling, trans- portation, work, and leisure), Kosice envisioned a city built with floating, mobile cells through which people would be free to travel—and be unbound to notions of private property and political boundaries. Thus, La ciudad’s relevance resides not only on its art historical value and precocious challenge to conventional and modernist paradigms, but also, Bassi argues, in the manner that this installation’s setup is conducive to the acknowledgment of the consumptive relationship that modern and contemporary societies have created with their environment.

Artist and designer Elena Izcue first encountered pre-Columbian objects as part of her training in the 1920s at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Lima. Spurred by new archaeological activity in the region, her access to these collections and resulting work in the arts parallelled a growing national recognition of the relevance of pre-Columbian history to a modern Peruvian identity. In 1927 Izcue sectured government sponsorship to move to Paris to continue her studies in textile design. This argument will examine varying contexts for the display of Izcue's work in Paris and New York between 1927 and 1939. Ranging from department stores, exhibitions and fashion media, also notable is the artist's involvement in Peruvian national pavilions at world expositions in these cities. Additionally, her innovations in design would lead to collaborations with the House of Worth and Elsa Schiaparelli. Examining Izcue's textiles and garments produced and displayed in these transnational contexts indicates a troubling factor in the historiography of modernism. Appropriated motifs in Izcue's fashion collaborations were praised for their formal qualities and lent prestige to her European collaborators. However, Izcue's own work was usually displayed in tandem with pre-Columbian artifacts and traditional dress, inherently binding her practice to a constructed nationality. Critically reframing these display practices provides a case study in methods to collapse historically binary narratives of modernism that privilege the universal over national, instead pointing to the global trajectory and continued relevance of Izcue's work.

The prolific production of Arab-Argentine artist Bibí Zogbé remains
relatively underexplored in art historical scholarship, largely due to the
complex transnational nature of her creative production between Latin
America, the Levant, and beyond. By closely examining the creative
trajectory of this twentieth-century diasporic painter and the critical
reception surrounding her work through texts housed in the Espigas
repository, Zogbé emerges as a uniquely positioned global artistic agent in
the crafting of modernism. An early 1934 exhibition catalog featuring Zogbé
at the Galerías Witcomb of Buenos Aires—a key document reproduced
here from the abovementioned repository (Fig. 1)—allows an analysis of the
distinct modes in which the artist was initially positioned before the broader
public and the transnational dimensions infused within her body of work.
Shifts in the critical discourse and reception of the artist in the following
decades are revealed via a brief comparison with a later catalog dedicated
to Zogbé from 1937, also held in the Espigas repository. By surveying these
texts, the multifaceted artistic trajectories of Zogbé between her adopted
country and the “old country,” as well as the layered identities negotiated
between local and global imaginaries, are revealed.

The main goal of this article is to analyze how Marta Traba, a
great intellectual and Latin American art critic, dealt in the early 1960s with
the issue of the artist's commitment to artistic work and the social
environment in Latin America. To do this, we analyze her work entitled “La
Pintura Nueva en Latinoamérica”, published in 1961, one of the first works
of greater density in which the author established comparative reflections
on painting in Latin America. The present work is part of the relationship
between art and history, culture and power, and uses theoretical and
methodological contributions from the Social History of Art and Intellectual
History. It is assumed that with this first broader essay, Marta Traba made a
diagnosis of painting in the post-World War II period, criticized existing
trends and movements in the region's art and culture and indicates new
directions for to the new generation of artists, having as based on examples
from the history of art in Latin America

Y creo que éstas se vivían-aún se viven-a través del trato con la servidumbre. RA: Sí, algunas familias tal vez tenían indígenas en sus casas, pero recuerdo que en casi todas había gente ladina, o sea, gente mestiza. MV: ¿Cuándo comenzó a pintar? RA: Tuve una enfermedad muy grave, ni los médicos sabían lo que era. Mi padre y mi hermano me revivieron con una botella de alcohol cuando ya estaban rezando por mí en el Colegio de Infantes, que era donde estudiaba. Esto fue en 1945, entonces ya dibujaba, me encantaba. Tuve un premio del colegio a los nueve años, en el tercer grado. Mientras estaba convaleciente, mi padre estaba con la construcción de la plaza de toros de Jocotenango, y me llevaba afiches, reproducciones, fotos de toreros. RA: No fuimos forzados en ningún momento a seguir la tradición palestina. MV: Guatemala aún tiene estructuras feudales de consanguinidad. Hay grupos de familias que han perpetuado sus feudos. Muchos llegaron como emigrantes y casi de inmediato se convirtieron en grupos de dominación del indígena. ¿El espacio de relación familiar que ustedes tenían era solo con otras familias palestinas? RA: Había relación, no solo con palestinos, sino con familias libanesas y sirio-libanesas. Todos eran amigos de mi padre. Por cierto, cuando había una fiesta venían casi todas las familias y mi abuela materna, que era una gran cocinera, hacía comida del Medio Oriente. MV: ¿También comían tortillas? RA: Por supuesto que sí. Yo me quedé con la tortilla y los frijoles, aparte de la dieta natural de la casa. Mi nana era una señora increíble y sabía hacer todos los guisos autóctonos. Este artículo examina cómo la política de buena vecindad, llevada adelante por el Gobierno norteamericano, construyó un corpus de obras de arte latinoamericanas que se exhibieron en Estados Unidos durante la década de 1940. Analizamos la creación de la Oficina del Coordinador de Asuntos Interamericanos, liderada por Nelson Rockefeller entre 1940 y 1945, y el papel de intelectuales y académicos que realizaron dos tareas centrales en la conquista informal del imperio estadounidense: coleccionar y exhibir. En particular, estudiamos las acciones que construyeron la colección de arte latinoamericano del MoMA en 1943. En este contexto, analizamos la tarea que Lincoln Kirstein y Grace Morley llevaron a cabo, con especial atención a sus percepciones y evaluaciones sobre el arte latinoamericano.

This research focuses on Mexican Muralism as a part of an educational initiative introduced following the Mexican Revolution of 1910. Functioning as a didactic art form, the intention of the murals was to educate the masses about its history, new national identity and promising modern future. This work not only examines Mexican Muralism and its recurring themes and representation of Indigenous subjects, but also tracks the appearance of these images from mural walls to movie screens in Mexican film of the Golden age. Using the 21st century theory developed by Django Paris and Samy Alim, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, this work asserts and finds that elements of the pedagogical theory, however small, can be traced from the Mexican Muralism movement of the 1920s to Golden Age films of the mid 20th century and finally in the 21st century where the theory is established. This paper looks at Colombian artist Feliza Bursztyn's work in relation to women artists in the Europe, Japan, and the United States who, like Bursztyn, made feminist-inflected art in the 1960s and early 70s, shortly before the Women's Movement had fully emerged. They worked at a time when there was little in the way of an established theoretical basis to support them.  .

La lectura es, a lo largo de los siglos XIX y XX, puesta obsesivamente en imagenes. En Argentina, el catalogo de pinturas y grabados de lectores resulta proliferante y disperso: estamos hablando de cientos, varios cientos de imagenes. El retrato de lectores es uno de los generos con mas continuidad dentro de las artes visuales modernas; se constituye en el Renacimiento (Stewart, 2006: 31-79), pero en el pais cobra importancia central despues de la Independencia. En el siglo XIX, artistas asentados en Buenos Aires como Adolphe D’Hastrel, Alphonse Femepin, Jean-Leon Palliere, Prilidiano Pueyrredon y Carlos Enrique Pellegrini trabajan una y otra vez el tema; en el siglo XX, nombres consagrados -desde Antonio Berni a Carlos Alonso- lo tratan sistematicamente. Estas imagenes son tan potentes como lugar del deseo que en algunos artistas constituyen la figura decisiva de un modo del relato.
