Lust

The recent scandals over clerical pedophilia have raised anew ancient church battles over the propriety of clerical celibacy. Using a sensational sixteenth-century case as a laboratory, this Article analyzes the traditional Roman Catholic arguments in favor of clerical celibacy and the attacks on those arguments by the sixteenth-century Protestant reformers. It then draws from this historical battle several modern lessons about clerics, children, and sexual crimes.

Este trabajo se centra en el estudio de la figura de la Lujuria en el arte románico y gótico de la península Ibérica. Para ello, antes se contextualiza este tipo de representación, la cual se engloba en el grupo de arte marginal por su condición. La Lujuria, mayormente representada en forma de mujer, respondía en la Baja Edad Media a connotaciones altamente negativas que a su vez se asociaban al género femenino. Por ello, este trabajo estudia los diferentes tipos iconográficos relacionados con la mujer que se utilizaron en el medievo para representar dicho pecado. (Trabajo de Fin de Grado. Junio 2016)

Masalah seksual remaja dekad ini sudah menjadi satu perkara yang amat membimbangkan. Lebih membimbangkan remaja kini terlibat dengan salah laku seksual seawal usia 11 tahun. Justeru, artikel ini dilaksanakan bertujuan mengenal pasti sama ada remaja perempuan cenderung melakukan hubungan seks di atas dasar cinta atau nafsu. Pengumpulan data melibatkan satu kajian fokus terdiri daripada lapan orang penghuni Asrama Bahagia Kampung Pandan. Analisis kandungan tema telah digunakan dalam mencari makna terhadap isu ini. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan remaja perempuan cenderung melakukan hubungan seksual untuk mendapatkan cinta dan kasih sayang daripada pasangan. Namun, perasaan cinta tersebut mampu berubah menjadi keinginan seksual atau nafsu apabila remaja mula aktif melakukan hubungan seksual bersama pasangan. Pengkaji juga mendapati remaja turut cenderung mendefinisikan hubungan seksual sebagai cara untuk menyatakan perasaan cinta dan kasih kepada pasangan. Dalam masa yang sama, kajian ini turut mencadangkan beberapa alternatif dalam usaha membendung salah laku seksual di kalangan remaja kini.

‘Kanchana’ is a popular Assamese novel, written by Anuradha Sharma Pujari. ‘Kanchana’ revolves around the tragic story of a young lady who was a victim of patriarchism prevailing in the society. ‘Kanchana’ has not been portrayed as an ideal women. In fact, the author has shown her as a simple woman, who was forced to let loose her body to men who are regarded as ‘high class’ people of the society. Her only love betrays her by leaving her with many lust hungry men. Kanchana finally becomes a mental patient with a serious psychological disorder. She forgets everything about her life, and returns to her childhood where there were no worries. It is an inspiring story of moving forward by letting go of the heavy burden of her past and live for her present and hope for a better future.

We explored themes related to sexual desire (lust) and romantic desire (love) in the lyrics of popular music over the past forty years.  Specifically, we examined whether there have been changes in the prevalence of lust and love themes and changes in how these themes inter-relate in music lyrics over time.  The study sample consisted of the top 40 songs of Billboard Hot 100 year-end songs for every five years from 1971 to 2011 (N = 360).  Coders assessed whether the themes of lust and love were evident in the song lyrics.  Findings indicate a linear decrease over time in the proportion of songs with a love theme and in the proportion of songs with a combination of love and lust themes.  In contrast, there was a significant increase in the proportion of songs with a theme focusing on lust in the absence of love.  Follow-up analyses indicated that themes of lust in the absence of love are especially prevalent in hip hop/rap music, although music genre does not account for the changing themes over time.  Rather, these shifts in lyric themes likely reflect a growing cultural acceptance of sexuality outside of love relationships.

Ownership of wild animal furs in Renaissance Italy was a sign of prosperity and social status. In addition to the explicit aspect of wealth, owning wild animal furs also meant that the wearer came from good lineage and could dress as befitting a noble station thanks to the exemption from the restrictions imposed by sumptuary laws. Contrary to modern expectations of conspicuous display these valuable skins were used as linings for clothing with the fur in contact with the body. Wearing fur on the outside of the garment raised a series of moral issues concerned with the animal origin of fur and the wearer's relationship to the animal world. Renaissance eroticism was mainly associated with the baser, sensual faculties and sexual appetites, that is, animal behaviour. Because it was linked to the emotions, it had the power to disturb the mind and the soul, and to disrupt order by posing a threat to a rational, civilized community. For that reason, the suspicions surrounding animal skins have to be taken into account when considering the rage for using valuable pelts in Europe. This paper will delve into the complex meanings attributed to fur: its status as a luxury good as well as the visual and symbolic associations to eroticism that inhibited its open display.

Ausgehend von Nietzsches emphatischem Votum für eine tragisch-dionysische Welt zeigt sich, dass diese Welt zwar tragisch, aber nicht miserabilisch ist. Sie fungiert als Folie für zukünftiges Denken und Tun, insbesondere des Künstlers.

À la fin des années 1960, alors que la croissance bat son plein et promet le bonheur pour tous, Jacques Ellul et Paul Ricœur, deux intellectuels protestants engagés, dénoncent la société de consommation. Tous deux estiment qu’elle ne suffit pas à répondre à la quête d’un sens et trouvent dans le don, la pointe de leur interrogation. Ils en tirent pourtant des conclusions opposées. L’un porte son accent sur la production et la consommation, l’autre sur la distribution. L’un voit le don comme un signe eschatologique ; l’autre veut inscrire la logique de la surabondance au cœur du réel. L’un dénonce le modèle économique comme une aliénation ; l’autre tente de l’orienter par une interrogation sur le sens. Dans leur écart et leur opposition, ces deux perspectives complémentaires nous invitent à repenser encore dans l’économie la place du don et l’économie elle-même.

At the end of the 1960s, when growth was in full swing and promised happiness for all, Jacques Ellul and Paul Ricœur, two committed Protestant intellectuals, denounced the consumer society. They both felt that it was not enough to respond to the quest for meaning and found in giving, the tip of their questioning. Yet they draw opposite conclusions. One focuses on production and consumption, the other on distribution. One sees gift as an eschatological sign; the other wants to inscribe the logic of superabundance at the heart of reality. One denounces the economic model as alienation; the other tries to orient it by questioning its meaning. In their divergence and opposition, these two complementary perspectives invite us to rethink the place of gift in the economy and, finally, the economy itself.

On 8 December 1660, following a long history of the prohibition of actresses in England, a feminine presence took to the London stage and altered it. The addition of women to the professional stages of England led to changes in the way in which plays were written and presented. This piece explores the relationship between page and stage, looking at it as one that is mutually reflective but non-deterministic. This essay first contextualises the presence of the actress by looking at the sparsely documented contemporary theatre culture in Renaissance and Restoration England, while raising questions about the male narrative. Subsequently this piece uses a comparison of William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure with Sir William Davenant’s 1662 adaptation, titled The Law Against Lovers, to demonstrate that, at least in terms of adaptations, the feminine presence on the English stage may have resulted in a toning down of the more licentious and sexualised content in Shakespeare’s original.
