Modern Rome

Until the mid-twentieth century the Western imagination seemed intent on viewing Rome purely in terms of its classical past or as a stop on the Grand Tour. This collection of essays looks at Rome from a postmodern perspective, including analysis of the city's 'unmappability', its fragmented narratives and its iconic status in literature and film.

The University City of Rome (1932-1935), as well as being one of the most significant complexes of the Twentieth century in Italy, represents a chance to find a common ground for architects who are profoundly different in origin under Marcello Piacentini's general coordination;  a model that if at the time of its construction is already an icon ― or rather an "architectural text"― enjoying great consideration both in italian and foreign press, since the Second World War has been suffering the consequences of militant criticism still awaiting a complete rehabilitation.
The aim of this publication is to approach the work in a different perspective. Trying to highlight the theoretical assumptions and the many individual and hidden contributions through an analytical process, the reader will be accompanied to the project re-construction within an itinerary that touches on different themes and actors: the knowledge of the universities, the principle of settlement, the compositional genesis of the plan and the role of dynamic perception in the definition of public space, focusing on the buildings and their inherent problems. 
In the light of all these issues, the "Studium Urbis" can be considered neither the result of a mere political operation, nor only a complex dictated by functional principles, but a particular example which goes far beyond ‘genre’, a city endowed with an autonomous and complete sense, as well as a collective and unrepeatable attempt to root and develop the culture and forms of modern architecture in Italy.

La Città Universitaria di Roma (1932-1935), oltre a costituire uno degli interventi più significativi del Novecento, rappresenta l'occasione in cui architetti profondamente diversi per provenienza e formazione si confrontano su un terreno comune sotto l'egida e il coordinamento generale di Marcello Piacentini, come in una grande esposizione concertata. Un modello che, se all'epoca della sua costruzione è già icona, o meglio un 'testo architettonico', che gode di grande considerazione sia presso la stampa italiana sia estera, in seguito alle pesanti stroncature da parte della critica postbellica attende ancora oggi una completa riabilitazione. L'obiettivo è quello di affrontare l'opera secondo una diversa chiave di lettura. Evidenziandone i presupposti teorici e i numerosi insegnamenti e apporti individuali sottesi, attraverso un procedimento analitico, il lettore verrà accompagnato verso un'ideale ri-costruzione del progetto entro un itinerario che tocca diversi temi e attori: dalla conoscenza delle università estere al principio insediativo, dalla genesi compositiva del piano al ruolo della percezione dinamica nella definizione dello spazio pubblico, fino ad addentrarsi nella complessità dei singoli edifici e delle loro intrinseche problematiche. In quest'ottica lo Studium Urbis non può essere considerato l'esito di una mera operazione politica, né soltanto un complesso dettato da principi funzionali, ma un particolare esempio al di là delle classificazioni di 'genere', una città dotata di senso autonomo e compiuto che si inscrive nel tentativo collettivo, unico e irripetibile di radicare e sviluppare la cultura e le forme di una moderna architettura in Italia.

Pio IX reigned over Rome and Papal state since 1846 till 1870. During his long reign many urban changes were undertaken to upgrade the capital and the state to modern needs. Despite Italian Risorgimento and wars under his rule modern Italian capital skeleton took shape.

This article traces the extraordinary architectural production of the Roman branch of the Istituto Case Popolari (Institute of Public Housing, ICP) during the period between 1925 and 1930. This period was the most prolific and creative in the history of the Institute, delivering a rich repertoire of distinctive public housing projects in and around Rome with modest means and against the backdrop of a severe housing crisis. It was also the period when a single architect, Innocenzo Sabbatini, left his creative mark on the most significant of the Institute's executed projects. Under Sabbatini's creative lead, the ICP sought to advance a distinctive, coherent vision for public housing while also producing a singular architectural language that was both modern and unmistakeable 'situated' in the traditions and the ambience of Rome. I examine the three arguably most innovative ICP projects of this period bearing Sabbatini's signature (the Albergo Rosso in Garbatella; the so-called Casa del Sole in Tiburtino; and the unrealised Trionfale Nuovo project). Through these three projects, I seek to trace a fascinatingly singular Roman road to architectural modernism that predated the 'heroic' phase of razionalismo in Rome during the early 1930s but has been largely redacted from the narratives of modernist architecture .

In Michelangelo Antonio’s L’Eclisse (1962), Cold War Rome is conceived of as a sequence of controlling frames from which the camera seeks liberation. In the opening sequence a reversed picture frame vies with an electric fan in a modernist flat to convey the grueling endgame of a long-term love affair in terms of the conflict between traditional and contemporary art media. This paper examines the film’s contribution to an understanding of the emotional necessity behind contemporary art’s rejection of the past and the birth of new media in 1960s Italy.

L'Idroscalo di Ostia è un " borghetto " di case autocostruite sorto nel secon-do dopoguerra sull'ultimo lembo della periferia romana prima della foce del Tevere. Come in numerose zone autocostruite di altre città del mondo, molti abitanti rifiutano il discorso ufficiale che li stigmatizza, legittimando sfratti e demolizioni, e rappresentano invece il territorio come un quartiere accogliente che permette loro di affrontare in comune le difficoltà economi-che e sociali della vita urbana. A partire dall'Idroscalo si può riflettere sulla " storia nascosta " dell'autocostruzione a Roma, e su come le demolizioni e i trasferimenti degli abitanti dei " boghetti " romani degli anni Settanta e Ottanta abbiano disatteso le aspettative dei beneficiari, producendo spesso risultati estremamente negativi.

Cette contribution se propose de mettre en relation la commande de cartons aux suc-cesseurs de Le Brun et la gestion institutionnelle du stock royal de tapisserie dévolu à l'Académie de France à Rome. L'une des fonctions initiales de l'Académie de France était précisément de faire copier les chefs-d'oeuvre de la peinture romaine à destination des Gobelins. À partir des années 1720, l'Académie de France à Rome, nouvellement installée dans les murs du Palazzo Mancini, entreprend la mise en valeur systématique de la production des Gobelins. Savamment assortie aux lambris par les menuisiers, les peintres et les doreurs, elle participe alors d'une réelle intégration symphonique du mobilier dans l'architecture, que vont relayer les peintres alors pensionnaires de l'institution durant les trois décennies suivantes. Après 1760, bien que la commande de cartons de tapisserie reste impor-tante, elle est mise au service d'attendus autres que la réflexion décorative. Abstract-In this paper I propose to connect the commissioning of tapestry cartoons to the successors of Le Brun and the institutional management of the royal stock of tapestry by the Académie de France in Rome. One of the original functions of the Académie de France was precisely to copy the masterpieces of Roman painting for the Gobelins manufacture. From the 1720's on, the Académie de France in Rome, newly housed in the Palazzo Mancini, began the systematic exposition of the Gobelins production. Carefully matched to the paneling by carpenters, painters and gilders, it was part of the symphonic integration of furniture in architecture that resident painters of the institution were to transmit for the next three decades. However, after 1760, although the number of commissions for tapestry cartons remained important, that medium was used for other purposes than that of finding new patterns of decoration.

Il convegno tenuto all’Accademia d’Ungheria in Roma l’8 aprile 2016 e il presente volume, che ne raccoglie le relazioni, mirano a circoscrivere cosa si debba intendere per chiesa nazionale nella Città Eterna nei secoli XV-XVIII, come si evolva tale concetto nel corso dei secoli e se e quanto esso contribuisca alla definizione dell’idea di “natio”. In particolare si è voluto investigare sui tratti comuni delle chiese nazionali in Roma attraverso una definizione delle loro differenti tipologie e sulla loro identificazione dal punto di vista giuridico-amministrativo, se fossero inserite o meno nel tessuto parrocchiale della diocesi romana e se appartenessero o meno a ordini religiosi (sia pure a forte connotazione nazionale) o al clero secolare. Abbiamo voluto analizzare tutto a partire da un modello della cui esistenza, sino a questo momento, le
ricerche storiche romane non hanno affatto ‒ o solo in minima parte ‒ tenuto conto: il paradigma delle istituzioni a Roma delle nazioni dei territori ai confini dell’Europa, più o meno periferiche dal punto di vista della Chiesa cattolica, per la maggior parte considerate obiettivi di attività missionaria.

Kallis explores this through a journey across the sites, monuments, and buildings of the fascist capital.

Η περίπτωση της Ρώμης είναι ίσως μοναδική μεταξύ των μεγάλων Ευρωπαϊκών πρωτευουσών. Το Λονδίνο, το Παρίσι, η Μαδρίτη, η Βιέννη και το Βερολίνο ήταν πρωτεύουσες πόλεις ήδη από τον Μεσαίωνα ή την Πρώιμη Νεότερη περίοδο. Κατά τον 19ο αιώνα με την εισαγωγή νέων τεχνολογιών οι οικονομίες τους εκβιομηχανίζονται και ο πληθυσμός τους αυξάνεται ραγδαία. Γίνονται κέντρα των εθνικών ιδεών και μετασχηματίζονται για να ανταποκριθούν στη νέα εποχή. Οι πόλεις αυτές δημιουργούν ένα πρότυπο πρωτεύουσας.
Η Ρώμη αντίθετα υστερεί κατά πολύ σε όλους τους τομείς, όχι μόνο από τις άλλες πρωτεύουσες αλλά και από πολλές πόλεις της Ιταλικής Χερσονήσου. Το χάσμα αυτό θα κλιθεί να γεφυρώσει μετά το 1870, όταν εντάσσεται στο Ιταλικό κράτος.
Η μελέτη της διαδικασίας αυτής είναι αποκαλυπτική όσον αφορά την συμβολική σπουδαιότητα της πρωτεύουσας ενός έθνους-κράτους του 19ου αιώνα. Επιπλέον αναζητούνται οι μέθοδοι και οι αντιλήψεις της αστικής αρχιτεκτονικής της εποχής αλλά και ο τρόπος εφαρμογής τους. Τέλος τονίζεται η σχέση της ιστορίας της πόλης με τις πολιτικές εξελίξεις, την ιδεολογία και τους κοινωνικό-οικονομικούς παράγοντες.
Τα χρονικά όρια της εργασίας επιλέχθηκαν κατά βάση λόγω των ιστορικών τομών. Η περίοδος που θα μελετηθεί ξεκινάει με την ένοπλη είσοδο των ιταλικών στρατευμάτων (20 Σεπτεμβρίου 1870) και λήγει με την κινηματική είσοδο των φασιστών και του Μπενίτο Μουσολίνι (30 Οκτωβρίου 1922) στη Ρώμη. Οι δύο αυτές είσοδοι στην πόλη ορίζουν την λεγόμενη "Φιλελεύθερη Περίοδο" του Ιταλικού Κράτους.

Quale era il «sistema di welfare» che prima dell’introduzione del «welfare state» rispondeva ai bisogni della popolazione anziana? A quanti anni si era considerati vecchi tra Cinquecento e Ottocento? A che età ci si ritirava dal lavoro? Come sopravvivevano gli anziani prima dell’introduzione dei moderni sistemi pensionistici? Nel passato i figli erano necessariamente il bastone della vecchiaia dei propri genitori? Che ruolo avevano nella vita degli anziani le istituzioni di assistenza? E in che misura il diritto agli alimenti era garantito dai tribunali del tempo?
Questi gli interrogativi da cui ha preso origine l’indagine sui rapporti tra vecchie e giovani generazioni nella Roma dei Papi. Un’indagine che smentisce i luoghi comuni che idealizzano i valori solidaristici delle famiglie del passato, mostrando come il sostegno agli anziani, ieri come oggi, sia il risultato di una
competizione/negoziazione tra famiglie e collettività in cui spesso sono chiamati in causa anche gli apparati giudiziari. Un’indagine storica che, in un tempo in cui lo stato sociale è sotto assedio in nome del progressivo invecchiamento della popolazione, fornisce utili spunti al ripensamento delle politiche di welfare.

A Ponte Galeria, tra spiaggia e fiume, l'Homo Sapiens sa che può trovare enormi giacimenti di carne: basta solo organizzarsi per la caccia collettiva. Con micidiali strumenti come giavellotti di legno appuntiti e asce con schegge di selce, può facilmente aver ragione dei grandi pacifici pachidermi. Non ci sono allora insediamenti umani stabili a Ponte Galeria ma periodiche scorribande di tribù nomadi di 30-40 persone al massimo, rette da un capo e basate su rapporti solidaristici: tutti mangiano le carni delle grandi prede, anche anziani, donne e bambini, indipendentemente dal contributo dato nella caccia collettiva. E se qualcuno muore viene anche seppellito, per un innato senso di pietà, in modo che del corpo del defunto non sia deturpato dalle bestie selvatiche.

Il volume propone il frutto di quaranta anni di ricerche, che affrontano problemi sia di carattere storico generale sia mirati ad alcuni aspetti dell’urbanistica, dell’edilizia, della topografia, dell’archeologia della produzione e del consumo di Roma medievale e moderna. Pazienti riscontri tra i dati del terreno e quelli offerti dagli archivi danno sostanza al tentativo di ricostruire anche dettagliatamente alcuni paesaggi della città, sia nel cuore del suo tessuto urbano sia nella periferia del “disabitato” interno al circuito difensivo.

La potente iniezione di archeologia di questi ultimi decenni ha rinsanguato la ricerca storica ponendola su nuovi binari, nei quali la vita economica, sociale, culturale e istituzionale di Roma ha trovato palcoscenici un tempo impensati, colti attraverso le strutture materiali ma in una costante ricerca delle persone, che quei paesaggi ebbero a costruire e animare nel corso di una evoluzione più che millenaria.

Articolul analizează dezvoltarea Romei prin prisma planurilor sale urbanistice din perioada 1870-1931, între definitivarea unirii Italiei, când aceasta a devenit capitala noului regat , până la debutul instaurării totalitarismului fascist în Italia, statuat conceptual prin „Doctrina fascismului“  în 1932. În această perioadă, au fost elaborate trei planuri urbanistice aprobate și câteva variante intermediare, iar Roma s-a dezvoltat spectaculos, ieșindu-și continuu din limitele administrative. Este interesant de aflat modul în care cei responsabili de procesul urbanistic, ghidați de situația istorică în care activau, au definit problemele orașului și felul în care aceștia au tradus o societate dezordonată într-o reprezentare coerentă, pe care au crezut că o pot controla.
În cadru mai larg, articolul se înscrie într-o preocupare științifică ce urmărește înțelegerea procesului de construcție a orașului în relație cu nou-constituita disciplină a urbanismului, la începutul secolului XX. Urbanismul avea drept scop ameliorarea cadrului vieții și acomodarea sanitară a orașului la noile provocări ale evoluției tehnologice și ale schimbărilor sociale majore, adică, ghidarea restructurărilor teritoriale impuse de evoluția orașului, evoluție acceptată ca fiind benefică, ce trebuia încurajată.

This article is pursuing the urban development of Rome regarding its comprehensive plans developed between 1870 and 1931, a period that begins with the city becoming the capital of reunified Italy and ends with the onset of Mussolini’s totalitarianism and fascist regime. At that time, Rome was confronted with three approved major urban plans and it faced an extraordinary development exceeding its territorial limits. Thus, there are illustrated those specific methods used by stakeholders and officials to identify and understand the problems of the new capital city, considering that their attitude was deeply influenced by their present historical consciousness. The main idea that arises and evolves throughout this entire article is that of the urban plan as an instrument for development, caught between the forces that restructured the city and engraved their symbols of power in the city structure.

Questo articolo ripercorre la genesi e lo sviluppo del salotto romano della contessa e archeologa Ersilia Caetani-Lovatelli (1840-1925). Verso la fine degli anni ‘60 dell’Ottocento la contessa cominciò a invitare amici intellettuali e altri personaggi di spicco nella Roma coeva, continuando in questo modo una tradizione inaugurata dal padre Michelangelo Caetani. Negli anni Settanta gli incontri intellettuali organizzati dalla Caetani-Lovatelli si fecero più regolari e il suo salotto divenne un punto di riferimento per la vita politica romana e italiana. Tra i frequentatori del salotto furono in molti a ricoprire cariche politiche all’interno delle istituzioni del giovane Stato nazionale italiano. L’analisi presentata in questa sede è infatti incentrata sul ruolo politico del salotto e sviluppa due linee di ricerca principali. In primo luogo, un approccio quantitativo e un’analisi della prassi discorsiva devono far luce sulle politiche sociali e sull’accessibilità del network della contessa. In secondo luogo si indaga il significato politico del salotto nell’Italia liberale, mettendo a fuoco le conversazioni politiche sostenutevi, e in particolare i dibattiti sulle questioni politiche che animavano il giovane Stato nazionale italiano.

Despite some hiccups in the process of ratification of the Treaty of Maastricht, the progressive diminution of the sovereignty of individual European nation states is already well under way. While national capitals like London and Paris and assured of continuing prominence as centres of finance, publishing, advertising, media and fashion, the future of Rome is less predictable. This paper looks at historical, social and cultural developments which are intersecting with institutional changes to determine Rome's future beyond 2000.
