Trazemos neste artigo discussão sobre a película tailandesa The Iron Ladies, que mostrou em sua história o caso real de uma equipe que na década de 1990 disputou a liga nacional de voleibol masculino na Tailândia, composto por atletas com performatizações de gênero não
normativas, que designamos no texto como masculinidades queer. Para tal, nos utilizamos dos estudos queer e operacionalizamos análise fílmica pela metodologia pós-estruturalista etnografia de tela. Reconhecemos que o longa-metragem tailandês problematizou importantes deslocamentos de sentidos sobre o masculino no esporte, através da performatização queer dos jogadores de voleibol, ponto principal da película que se utilizou de deboche e ironia como
alavanca para a ruptura.

Zeitgenössische Literatur dient demnach als Spiegel wie auch als Quelle der jeweils gegenwärtigen gesellschaftlichen Vorstellungen darüber, wie Intimität codiert ist, nämlich: über die Kommunikation zweier Liebender inklusive ihrer Tücken. Die Literatur verhandelt Einzelfälle und modelliert damit Verweisstrukturen, in denen der Rezipient Anleihen findet, um Zusammenhänge und Problematiken innerhalb seiner eigenen System-Umwelt-Beziehung, insbesondere seiner vergangenen, potenziellen oder faktischen Intimbeziehung(en), benennen zu können. Das rezeptionsästhetische Paradigma rechtfertigt somit die Analyse von Belletristik zur Diskussion von gender-Konzepten. Der gender-orientierten Erzähltextanalyse wurde im Laufe ihrer Entwicklung immer wieder vorgeworfen, sie stelle Thesen auf, habe aber kein hinreichendes methodisches Instrumentarium entwickelt, um sie belastbar zu belegen. 7 In meiner Arbeit soll ein Beitrag dazu geleistet werden, diese theoretische Leerstelle zu füllen, indem der poststrukturalistischen feministischen Theorie die Systemtheorie Luhmanns zur Seite gestellt wird. Der große Beitrag der Systemtheorie besteht in dieser Kombination in der instrumentellen Betrachtungsweise, die die Frage nach der Funktion einer Handlung für ein System stellt: Dadurch hat sie die Möglichkeit, die gender-Theorie vor der Fallgrube einer emotional geprägten, dogmatischen Herangehensweise zu schützen, die sie selbst durch ihr politisches Interesse an Veränderung ausgehobenen hat. Wenn Diskurse soziale Wirklichkeiten schaffen, bedeutet dies, dass sie die Grenzen dessen abstecken, was innerhalb eines sozialen Systems verarbeitbar und damit akzeptabel ist. Daher gehören neben Diskursen dazu, was z.B. Wissenschaftlichkeit oder Höflichkeit bedeutet, auch Vorstellungen von Rasse, Klasse, Ethnie und nicht zuletzt Geschlecht. Diskurse stellen gesellschaftlich erfassbare und anerkannte Verweishorizonte auf und »bilden die symbolischen Ordnungssysteme, die die Wirklichkeit und Körperlichkeit, in der das Individuum lebt, vorgeben, dem Subjekt vorgängig sind und von diesem ›verkörpert‹ werden« 8 . Eine literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse muss danach fragen, inwiefern in einem Text Diskurse zur Anwendung gelangen oder gar mit ihnen gebrochen wird -ich werde analysieren, inwiefern das in den behandelten Werken für den Männlichkeits-Diskurs der Fall ist. 6 Liebesbeziehungen sind ebenso wie die Vorstellung von Geschlecht traditionell binär angelegt. Die meisten Darstellungen von Liebesbeziehungen orientieren sich auch heute noch an der als »natürlich« empfundenen Beziehung zwischen den sich biologisch ergänzenden, in Zusammenkunft Nachkommenschaft sichernden, Geschlechtern. 7 vgl. Wenn wir uns der Frage widmen, wie der »archaische Mann« in Texten Dekonstruktion erfährt, lohnt es sich zu fragen, was sich hinter diesem Begriff denn nun genau verbirgt. Das griechische Wort »archaĩos«, die Herkunft des deutschen Attributs »archaisch«, wird mit »alt; altertümlich; ursprünglich« übersetzt 9 ; es verweist auf eine Art naturgegebene, »wahre« Form von Männlichkeit 10 . Sie beschreibt das Ideal vor allem männerbündlerischer Vorstellungen, die um die vorletzte Jahrhundertwende prominent und zu guter Letzt im Nationalsozialismus und seiner dunklen Pädagogik fassbar wurden 11 . In seinem Beitrag »Männerbund und Politische Kultur in Deutschland« aus dem Jahr 1988 beschreibt der Kultursoziologe Nicolaus Sombart das der Männerbundvorstellung zugrunde liegende männlich-martialische Prinzip wie folgt: »Mann« ist nur der männliche, der soldatische, der heroische Mann. Das steht gegen den verweichlichten, weibischen Mann, den Zivilisten, den »Bürger«. Das steht gegen den Citoyen, den »Weltbürger«, den »Menschen« im Sinne einer universellen Menschheitsvorstellung. Es steht vor allem gegen alles, was mit dem Weib zu tun hat, und das ist, wie wir sehen werden, sehr viel. 12

As Rothgerber (2012) states, as arguments become more prominent that meat consumption is harmful to the ‘environment, public health, and animals’ (p.1); those who consume meat products will experience pressure to justify their meat eating. This, incorporated with the comparatively lesser male concern for the rights of animals, and the apparent animosity towards plant-based diets may be analysed as a development of masculinity (Rothgerber, 2012). In this exploratory study, men (aged between eighteen and twenty-five) gave accounts of their experiences of participating in weight work and of their diet. The data were then integrated with pre-existing theoretical research whilst at all times seeking to analyse through an ethical-vegetarian-feminist lens. The data were gathered through the use of focus groups (Morgan, 1998) before being submitted to a process of thematic analysis (Stenner, 1993). All participants presented discourses where attaining muscular physique was a goal and consumption of meat was a considered aspect of that ambition. Having a body shape that did not conform to those ideals was discriminated against and those who did adhere to the standards were elevated to the superior within a social-hierarchy. As well as the construction of social hierarchies based upon physical attributes, they were also created along the lines of diet with the opposition of men’s versus women’s food (Rogers, 2008) becoming apparent throughout. Data are discussed in relation to the construction of masculine gender identity as well as its relationship to the hierarchies of body ideals, diet and physical characteristics.

From 2008 to 2009, “herbivore men (sôshoku danshi or sôshoku-kei danshi in Japanese)” became a trendy, widely used term in Japanese. It flourished in all sorts of media, including TV, the Internet, newspapers and magazines, and could even occasionally be heard in everyday conversation. As it became more popular its original meaning was diversified, and people began to use it with a variety of different nuances. In December of 2009 it made the top ten list of nominees for the “Buzzword of the Year” contest sponsored by U-CAN. By 2010 it had become a standard noun, and right now, in 2011, people do not seem particularly interested in it. Buzzwords have a short lifespan, so there is a high probability that it will soon fall out of use. The fact remains, however, that the appearance of this term has radically changed the way people look at young men. It can perhaps even be described as an epochal event in the history of the male gender in Japan.

A także stereotypy i uprzedzenia. Reprezentacje rodzaju w reklamach, tak jak i w przypadku innych typów przekazów medialnych z grubsza rzecz biorąc odbijają podstawowe cechy porządku społecznego oraz usytuowania w nim kobiet i mężczyzn. Jednak dzieje się tu coś więcej. Twórcy przekazów reklamowych przejawiają szczególnie dużą skłonność do ignorowania rzeczywistej różnorodności aktualnie podejmowanych przez kobiety i mężczyzn ról społecznych oraz do przesadnego powielania stereotypów i uprzedzeń związanych z rodzajem, chociaż nie ma jednoznacznych dowodów, że takie obrazy sprzedają więcej produktów . Tak jak w przypadku zasadniczej treści czasopism, sam fakt reklamowania innych produktów dla kobiet i mężczyzn jest odbiciem dychotomii w postrzeganiu cech osobowości, wyglądu, potrzeb i ról społecznych.

Um die Männlichkeitsentwürfe der SS, die aufgrund der weltanschaulichen Leitfunktion dieser Organisation einen Anspruch auf hegemoniale Geltung im Nationalsozialismus erhoben, historisch einzuordnen, müssen wir mit der Betrachtung der Diskursentwicklung lange vor dem Nationalsozialismus beginnen. In dem vorliegenden Aufsatz werden zunächst Vorläufer und Abgrenzungspunkte dieser Entwürfe benannt und anschließend die Vorstellungen von Männlichkeit in der SS selbst vorgestellt. Eine diskursanalytische Betrachtung vermag die Genese dieser Männlichkeit zu beschreiben, nicht aber mentalitätsgeschichtlich ihrer affektiven Aufladung nachzuspüren. Um zu verstehen, wieso sie als attraktives Selbstbild dienen konnte, wird im zweiten Teil des Aufsatzes ein psychoanalytisch-sozialpsychologischer Blick auf die Verankerungen von Männlichkeiten in der Psychodynamik geworfen und auch vor diesem Hintergrund in kritischer Auseinandersetzung mit Klaus Theweleits Studie über Männerphantasien die Spezifik der SS-Männlichkeitsentwürfe herausgearbeitet. Der Niedergang des ‚Patriarchen' Die bürgerlich-patriarchale Männlichkeit des langen 19. Jahrhunderts hatte sich in zweierlei Form auf die ihr korrespondierenden Weiblichkeitsentwürfe bezogen: Erstens bildeten Männlichkeit – als Ausdruck von Autonomie und Rationalität – und Weiblichkeit – als Ausdruck von Heteronomie und Sympathie (im Sinne von Verbundenheit und Mitgefühl) – ein sich komplementär ergänzendes Paar, zweitens aber war dieses ideologische Paar auch als eines von Allgemeinem und Besonderem aufgebaut: " Der Mensch und sein Weib ". In der patriarchalen Form der Ehe fand beides seinen Ausdruck: Die Ergänzung in der Arbeitsteilung und den zugeschriebenen ‚Geschlechtscharakteren', aber auch die Inklusion des Weiblichen in das Männliche durch die (rechtliche) Unterwerfung der Ehefrau. Schon im Kaiserreich wurde dieses Paradigma von der gesellschaftlichen Wirklichkeit in Frage gestellt. Der Wandel der deutschen Gesellschaft von einer weitgehend agrarischen zu einer industriell geprägten in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts schuf mit der Ausweitung der Lohnarbeit im Allgemeinen und der zunehmenden weiblichen Erwerbstätigkeit im Besonderen, mit den Tendenzen zur ‚Massen'-Gesellschaft, Urbanisierung und Säkularisierung neue, die Männer der bürgerlichen Leitkultur oftmals verstörende Phänomene wie die Arbeiter/innenbewegung und die Frauenbewegungen. While some critics argue that Gwendolyn Brooks' poetry remained generally un-political before the 1960's and she herself states that "until 1967 [her] own blackness did not confront [her] with a shrill spelling of itself," (qtd. in Melham 12) there are traces of racial awareness long before then. In her 1944 book of poetry, A Street in Bronzeville, Brooks presents a series of vignettes that not only "gives a cross-section of the residents…reveal[ing] their hopes, needs, commonality and differences" (Melham 22) but also shows the stark poverty in which these people lived, providing a glimpse into the living conditions of many African Americans. The characters in A Street in Bronzeville "dramatize a microcosm of black urban life…by focusing on them, Brooks has been able to engage some the major social issues of her time, including…racial justice" (Mootry 3). There are undertones of dissatisfaction with the political and social place of the African American, more specifically, the African American male. In particular, she exhibits a hyper awareness of the political and social powerlessness, or emasculation, of African American men in her poem, "The Sundays of Satin-Legs Smith." Because T.S. Eliot's "The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock" depicts one of the most notable examples of the emasculated male, it is important to establish that Brooks relies heavily on the similarities between the two in order to propel the poem forward and create a context through which Satin-Leg Smith's emasculation can be better understood. Throughout "The Sundays of Caro 2 Satin-Legs Smith" Brooks echoes Eliot. Judith P. Saunders notes that Brooks creates many parallels between the two texts, stating that:

Reconhecendo que o voleibol tem se mostrado o esporte em que, com flagrante recorrência, colocam-se questões quanto aos sentidos mais normalizadores do masculino, tanto pelas performances de gênero, como pela visibilidade da orientação homossexual de seus atletas, que têm sido protagonistas em potentes processos de rompimento com a dominância da heteronormatividade nos contextos esportivos, o foco desta pesquisa se desenvolve no referido esporte. Deste modo, buscou-se, nesta tese, problematizar os processos de significação da masculinidade entre jovens adolescentes atletas de voleibol e estudantes da educação básica, que se identificavam como gays e bissexuais, a partir da produção e discussão de narrativas que abordassem essa temática relativamente aos diferentes espaços-tempos do esporte e da escola. Como etapa inicial, realizou-se revisão da produção acadêmica do campo de estudos sobre homens e masculinidades, nas áreas de Educação e Educação Física, em publicações de periódicos da última década (2007-2016), buscando assim, o diálogo da tese com as pesquisas dos referidos campos de estudos. Foram mobilizadas as teorizações desenvolvidas por Jacques Derrida e Judith Butler, com destaque para as noções de performatividade da linguagem e performatividade de gênero, para discutir a categoria masculinidade, e procurou-se, ainda, a aproximação com a perspectiva queer, propondo os operadores de pesquisa masculinidade normalizadora e masculinidade queer para a interpretação das narrativas produzidas pela pesquisa. Os jovens adolescentes, em seus relatos, enunciaram a imposição da masculinidade normalizadora como performance nos espaços-tempos do voleibol e, principalmente, da escola, que os apreendia como corpos abjetos e precários. Entretanto, também foram frequentes as desestabilizações destes sentidos normalizadores, em particular no espaço-tempo do voleibol, quando os jovens adolescentes, nos clubes em que se constituíam como atletas, resistiam à exigência da masculinidade normalizadora por meio de enunciações subversivas e paródias de gênero, aproximando-se de uma significação da masculinidade que denominou-se como lançada em horizonte queer. As narrativas também apresentaram a categoria masculinidade atravessada por marcadores da diferença, como: orientação sexual; raça; classe social; idade; deficiência; e religião, mobilizando reflexões em abordagem interseccional sobre o agravamento da condição de precariedade destes jovens adolescentes nos espaços-tempos do voleibol e da escola, além de contribuírem para desmontar os essencialismos, usualmente postos nas identificações dos sujeitos. O desejo de um horizonte queer para a masculinidade, na contemporaneidade, expressa um ideal que se quer chegar e alcançar, potencializando ao infinito suas performances de gênero, ao mirar a ruptura radical das opressões e desigualdades que, as estabilizações identitárias promovem sobre os sentidos do masculino e de “ser homem”.

Teens Love James Franco: A Study of a Life and Works is a study of the raunchy comments left by teens and young women on James Franco’s since deleted Instagram account, a look at the popularity of “the daddy thing” in popular culture, and an analysis of nympholepsy (i.e., a passion aroused in men [i.e., nympholepts] by beautiful young girls) and the sexual nature of teens in James Franco’s oeuvre.

This paper critically examines the extent to which the modern psychological study of masculinity—what has been called the “new” psychology of men—engages with issues of male privilege in its theoretical orientations and research foci. Exposing the operation of privilege in the construction of gender and gendered relationships has long been central to feminist  projects, both political and academic. As I will argue, it is also necessary to any effort at understanding the construction of masculinity and promoting gender equality. Given the allegiance of the new psychology of men to these goals, and to feminism in general, it seems a worthwhile task to explore how the field has incorporated analyses of men’s conferred dominance and its effect on their psychology. To pursue this goal, I first outline the history of the new psychology of men, especially its early connections to feminist scholarship. Next, I summarize theory and research from each of the three main areas of study within the new psychology of men—Gender Role Strain, Gender Role Conflict, and the study of masculine norms—in order to paint a picture of how the field theorizes and studies the psychological issues related to masculinity. Finally, I investigate how the three areas of scholarship mentioned above conceptualize and contend with men’s relative position of privilege within a hierarchical gendered social order. In conclusion, I hope to demonstrate the importance of the simultaneous exploration of the costs men incur and the benefits they accrue as a result of masculine socialization, and to propose some directions such research might take.

This paper critically examines the nature of participation amongst adolescent to young-adult, heterosexual males, approximately ages 15-25, in the sphere of fashion, and additionally explores the notion of sartorial presentation or "style" as a function of age. Framed with reference to historical men's dress practice, and the respective sociocultural institutions-most notably against midcentury postmodernity, as well as against the continually controversial meta-modernity-it is uncovered how agents such as masculinity, media, and aspiration to social norms work to manipulate youth males' perception of, and expression through fashion. Moreover, it is theorized how the sartorial stylistic discontents between traditional, and "new" masculinities can be ameliorated across generational lines.

Spectrogram representations of acoustic scenes have achieved competitive performance for acoustic scene classification. Yet, the spectrogram alone does not take into account a substantial amount of time-frequency information. In this study, we present an approach for exploring the benefits of deep scalogram representations, extracted in segments from an audio stream. The approach presented firstly transforms the segmented acoustic scenes into bump and morse scalograms, as well as spectrograms; secondly, the spectrograms or scalograms are sent into pre-trained convolutional neural networks; thirdly, the features extracted from a subsequent fully connected layer are fed into (bidirectional) gated recurrent neural networks, which are followed by a single highway layer and a softmax layer; finally, predictions from these three systems are fused by a margin sampling value strategy. We then evaluate the proposed approach using the acoustic scene classification data set of 2017 IEEE AASP Challenge on Detection and Classification of Acoustic Scenes and Events (DCASE). On the evaluation set, an accuracy of 64.0 % % % from bidirectional gated recurrent neural networks is obtained when fusing the spectrogram and the bump scalogram, which is an improvement on the 61.0 % % % baseline result provided by the DCASE 2017 organisers. This result shows that extracted bump scalograms are capable of improving the classification accuracy, when fusing with a spectrogram-based system.

This opinion piece explores some of the causes and possible solutions to domestic and family violence. The author proposes that the core of the issue of domestic violence  is a rigid generational schema about ways of relating to women and of dealing with conflict.

In this article, we investigate how gender-based violence (GBV) affects the sexual and reproductive health of impoverished adolescents and young adults. We analyse data from a 2011 survey of 450 young women and 300 young men aged 15–29, living in poor neighbourhoods of three middle-sized cities in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this survey we used a closed-ended questionnaire to collect data from 150 women and 100 men in each city. Our main goal was to explore the relationship between GBV and young women's autonomy in relation to their sexuality, using indicators appropriate to Brazil. Our results showed a decreased prevalence of condom use at first intercourse and an increased prevalence of teenage pregnancies among young women who were in a relationship with a controlling and violent partner. Lower condom use was observed mostly among young men who acknowledged being violent and controlling towards a partner and they also were more likely to have made a partner pregnant as teenagers themselves. We conclude that some variables utilized here as indicators of control and violence from a partner and of young women's autonomy can help us to understand how GBV inside relationships affects the reproductive and sexual health of young men and women, and how empowering them can reduce their susceptibility to unwanted pregnancies and HIV and other STI infections.

This article employs descriptive and explorative methods concerning father absence and missional parenting. It identifies numerous ramifications caused by father absence and the failing role of men. Father absence has been a serious social issue in South Africa, which has become more tenacious in post-colonial South Africa because of economic reasons, untold fatherhood, refused fatherhood, fatherhood accountability, divorce and dissolution of households. This social issue influenced and affected both family and society dysfunction and created a vicious cycle of poverty in many South African homes. This article aimed to lessen the predicament of fatherlessness by considering the role of missional parenting where the father and mother form a partnership and collaborate for the family’s progress and actualise God’s pre-eminent plan for families in South Africa. The literature review and methodology provided rich insights and considerable knowledge to help support families who do not have a father figure and men in their fatherly role. Missional parenting is gospel-centred and can be a detriment to father absence. Parents follow the example of Jesus Christ as saviour in missional parenting.

In this article, we investigate how gender-based violence (GBV) affects the sexual and reproductive health of impoverished adolescents and young adults. We analyse data from a 2011 survey of 450 young women and 300 young men aged 15-29, living in poor neighbourhoods of three middle-sized cities in Minas Gerais, Brazil. In this survey we used a closed-ended questionnaire to collect data from 150 women and 100 men in each city. Our main goal was to explore the relationship between GBV and young women's autonomy in relation to their sexuality, using indicators appropriate to Brazil. Our results showed a decreased prevalence of condom use at first intercourse and an increased prevalence of teenage pregnancies among young women who were in a relationship with a controlling and violent partner. Lower condom use was observed mostly among young men who acknowledged being violent and controlling towards a partner and they also were more likely to have made a partner pregnant as teenagers themselves. We conclude that some variables utilized here as indicators of control and violence from a partner and of young women's autonomy can help us to understand how GBV inside relationships affects the reproductive and sexual health of young men and women, and how empowering them can reduce their susceptibility to unwanted pregnancies and HIV and other STI infections.

Is Dr. Curry at fault for illustrating to readers of Philosophy, and those who read his work in various disciplines, that the problem with any concept especially one such as freedom is that it offers a continuity of enslavement with conditions. These conditions are that the previously enslaved accept what our perpetrators offer us as freedom, without question, even if we know that one is never truly free from the person who owns the definition of your freedom! There is a problem with a construction of a concept then the concept continues to exist in a continuum of death and murder, because the beneficiaries of slavery deny that the death of Black people was their objective, and resent Dr. Curry for pointing out, vis-a-vie the Fanonian contention that White people may have to undergo the very process of death they inflict on Black people in order for Black people to be truly free. What is so unthinkable about the logic of murder? If you kill should you not expect to be killed yourself?  White America cannot run away from the Theatre of Cruelty it created as it still sucks Black blood blood through a White straw. Just because you don't like what Dr. Tommy Curry has to say does not make it less true.  Learn how to read, and learn how to be gracious . . . especially when someone offers you the untold and uncensored version of your history of White Supremacy.

This book will examine the unique way that fathers around the world contribute to the positive educational outcomes of children. From ages 3 to 18 (Pre K – 12), fathers play a distinct, developmental and directed role in their children's schooling. We seek empirical research-based submissions, both quantitative and qualitative, that highlight what fathers do to help their children get ahead in school. We define fathering as biological or non-biological male parenting. Submissions are not limited to but can include: race, gender, socioeconomic status, and/or comparative analysis from around the world.

Jøde“ veröffentlicht wird, ist der Autor von einer Gesellschaft umgeben, deren Zeitgeist geprägt ist, durch abstrakte binäre Oppositionspaare, die sich gegenseitig definieren, voneinander abhängig sind und in deren Mittelpunkt die Familie steht. Zeitgenössische Vorstellungen von
Familie und Männlichkeit, sowie daraus resultierende Problematiken für das Individuum, spiegeln sich auch in Goldschmidts Figurenkomposition wider. Die Intersektionen der Kategorien Geschlecht, Religion und Nationalität sind Teil des Konflikts. Ausgehend von dieser Überlegung,
möchte ich die im Text enthaltenen Männlichkeitsbilder analysieren, die im ersten Teil von Meïr Aaron Goldschmidts Roman „En Jøde“, besonders durch drei väterliche Männerfiguren: Vater,
Onkel und Rektor; vermittelt werden. Begleitet wird diese Figurenanalyse durch eine Betrachtung der (literarischen) Räume und Orte, die mit diesen Figuren verknüpft sind und zwischen denen die Hauptfigur Jakob sich bewegt, um abschließend zu überlegen, welchen Einfluss die
herausgearbeiteten Männlichkeiten auf Jakobs Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und sein Verhalten haben.

Leïla Marouane is a maghrebian writer and feminist. The Sexual Life of an Islamist in Paris is her 5th novel. It’s a story of a 40 year old Maghrebian man born in Algeria who spent his life in France in a traditional muslim family. The tensions between the country of origin and the host country appear at all levels. The protagonist can’t combine his traditional side; religion and family life, with his modern side; his work and desires. These contradictory elements constitute his identity, but his psyche is occupied by the question of sexuality. Contrary to expectations of the reader, "sexual life of an Islamist in Paris" is ultimately non-existent, at least for the hero. The dissonance between the title of the novel and the story of the protagonist's life reveals its schizophrenia. Thus, inability to realize that it is impossible to achieve this "myth of masculinity" can lead to mental disorder, as in the case of Marouane’s hero.
