In the present article, I wish to concentrate on what may be called “transgressive border-crossings” engaged in by the protagonists of Ferzan Özpetek’s Hamam in two poignant instances of “hamam spying”, which – though effected in different configurations, for different purposes, and with drastically different consequences – introduce positions of “uninitiated” novices kept outside looking in. What I intend to engage with is Istanbul as a “third space”; a liminal space looming as a challenge to the individual, instilling fear as much as unleashing temptation and a faint promise or threat of finding out and being found out, of revealing, taking in, laying bare, getting laid, getting lost. By looking at Francesco and Mehmet looking (from above) at unsuspecting women in the bagno, and Marta looking (from below) at Francesco and Mehmet looking at one another in the shelter of Francesco’s originally unwanted inherited hamam, I wish to investigate the implications of reversing the male gaz...

I am trying to explain that there is no relation between Turkish culture with homosexuality and masculinty and the culture of Ottoman empire can be a good example for that. It is related to events that occured in the old history. The events that occured in the old history always intersect with Western Europe where is  one of the most developed place in the world. Therefore I compare Turkish culture with West European culture as well.

ABSTRACT
Cinema as a means of communication reveals the change and transformation of the society being in a mutual relationship with the society itself. Having emerged since the mid-1990s and been acknowledged in the film festivals held both in Turkey and around the world, New Turkish Cinema has had a significant place by differing from Yeşilçam’s classical narrative in the 100 year-period Turkish cinema. However, in this period, the young generation film directors’ different approaches to film-making make it difficult to classify their films under the same category of New Turkish Cinema. This article aims to reveal the similarities and differences between the approaches of the film directors as Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Fatih Akın and Ferzan Özpetek believing that these directors have contributed to the acknowledgement of Turkish cinema worldwide and they cannot be categorised under any category easily. These film directors have all made a difference both in Turkey and in the world with their distinct film-making approaches. Even though there are common themes in these directors’ films, these themes have been revealed in different ways, having different effects on the audience. However, the social messages given through the themes like individuality, loneliness, identity issues, multiculturalism, desire, immigration, alienation and the characters created in these films enable both the individual and the society to have the chance to confront with their predicaments and contradictions. In this article, the relation between cinema and the society has been questioned through the analysis of the “new characters” created in the films questioning the place of the individual within the society in the 21th Century. These characters are totally different from the stereotypical characters we are used to watching in Yeşilçam movies. The analysis is done through the selected concepts, themes, symbols and the main characters of the films which are thought to be reflecting the transformation taking place in the society in the light of critical discourse analytical approaches analysing everyday life, social and cultural values, gender roles, and hermeneutic analysis as methods utilised eclectically as a part of critical discourse analysis.

ÖZET
Sinema, toplumsal değişim ve dönüşümü yansıtan, içinde bulunduğu toplumla karşılıklı iletişim halinde olan bir iletişim aracıdır. 1990’ların ortasından sonra ortaya çıkan, Türkiye’de ve dünyada festivallerde adından söz ettiren Yeni Dönem Türk Sineması’nın, Türk Sineması’nın 100 yıllık tarihsel sürecinde Yeşilçam’ın yerleşmiş anlatısının dışına çıkarak farklı bir yer kazanmasıyla, bu iletişim aracının toplumla kurduğu ilişki de değişmeye başlamıştır. Ancak bu dönemde genç kuşak yönetmenlerin ortaya koyduğu farklı sinema anlayışları, onların filmlerinin Yeni Türk Sineması başlığı altında sınıflandırılmasını zorlaştırır. Bu çalışma aslında kolayca herhangi bir başlık altında kategorileştirilemeyecek yönetmenlerden olan Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Fatih Akın ve Ferzan Özpetek gibi isimlerin Türk Sineması’nın dünya çapında tanınırlık kazanmasına yadsınamaz bir katkı sağlayan ve farklı sinema anlayışlarıyla Türkiye’de ve dünyada fark yaratan yönetmenler oldukları düşüncesinden yola çıkarak, yönetmenlerin toplumla kurdukları ilişkiyi ana hatlarıyla, benzerlik ve farklılıklarıyla ortaya koymak için yapılmıştır. Bu yönetmenlerin filmlerinde, ortak olan temalar olduğunda bile bunlar benzer şekilde resmedilmese ve seyircide farklı etkiler uyandırsa bile, filmlerin genel olarak bireysellik, yalnızlık, kimliksizlik, çok kültürlülük, arzu, göçmenlik ve yabancılaşma gibi temalarla toplumsal içerikli mesajlar verdikleri ve filmlerde yaratılan karakterlerin bireye ve topluma kendi çıkmazları ve çelişkileriyle yüzleşme olanağı sağladıkları ortadadır. Bu makalede, Yeşilçam’da görmeye alışık olduğumuz yerleşik kalıp ve stereotip karakterlerin dışında olan, 21. yüzyılda, kendisini ve kendisinin toplumdaki yerini sorgulayan sinema anlayışının yarattığı “yeni” tip karakterlerin analizi üzerinden sinema toplum ilişkisi sorgulanmıştır. Çalışmadaki analiz, toplumda yaşanan değişim ve dönüşümü yansıttığı düşünülerek seçilen kavram, tema, semboller ve filmlerde öne çıkan karakterler üzerinden ana hatlarıyla, gündelik hayat, sosyal ve kültürel değerler, toplumsal cinsiyet ve rolleri analiz eden toplumsal eleştiri yöntemi ve yorumbilgisel analiz yöntemi gibi eleştirel söylem analizinin yararlandığı metotlar ışığında eklektik olarak yapılmıştır.

In Hamam (1997) and The Ignorant Fairies (2001), Turkish-Italian director Fernan Özpetek places a bisexual/bicultural game at the centre of the diegetic space. Three characters whose emotions are in flux become psychologically intimate in honest, non-competitive ways. In the process, each discovers a new self within. In Hamam, a successful, married male professional from Italy discovers bisexual pleasure while in Istanbul. In The Ignorant Fairies, a successful female physician in Rome becomes part of the gay/immigrant community. Players define happiness in their own terms and learn to generate the emotional environment that will sustain it. By modelling erotic behaviours that are conducive of cognitive explorations, the bi-games address global issues like religious intolerance, immigration, and cultural difference. In the context of queer theory, my article analyses the bi-tropes at the centre of Özpetek's films as ludic structures conducive of self-knowledge and self-definition, and as cooperative games in which players maximize their chances for emotional sustainability. 163 NCJCF 2 (3) 163-174

This paper is concerned with the way in which the form of the film synopsis reifies both the film itself and the processes at work in its production, distribution and recognition. In line with recent Lacanian film theory (inter alia, Žižek, McGowan, Vighi), I treat film as a site of excess meaning, or antagonism, and therefore argue that we need to look to extra-filmic material if we are to understand the ideological process of resolving antagonism. I examine synopses of films given by international, competitive (“A list”) film festivals, and consider how they condense the meaning of an award-winning film in order to present a sellable product: the “festival film”. In doing so, I aim to show three things. First, the process of reification – “taming the excess” – at work in the film synopsis form. This can be understood by the ideological process of inclusion and exclusion at work in film synopses – their attempt to fix, or quilt, the meaning of a film. Second, the way in which this process is conditioned by a particular set of values, in this case the values associated with and reproduced by the film festival brand. This is a necessary aspect of the circulation of symbolic capital on which film festivals and award-winning films depend (Elsaesser, 2005, De Valck, 2014). Finally, I aim to indicate the possibility of considering the international film festival network as part of the cultural state apparatus, which has taken on a transnational dimension.

Sinemada kentler, filmin öyküsünün geçtiği arka fon olmaktan çok öte bir konuma sahiptir. Kent, filmde duygu ve atmosfer yaratmak için kullanılan önemli araçlar arasında yer almaktadır. Sinemasal evrende öyküye anlam katan ve atmosferi etkileyen güçlü bir öğe olan kent, filmin karakterlerinden biri olarak da değerlendirilebilmektedir. Bu bağlamda Paris, New York, Roma, Moskova, Hong Kong gibi kentler, filmler aracılığıyla sinematik bir nitelik kazanmıştır. Istanbul da, Avrupa ve Asya kıtalarını birleştiren coğrafi konumu, tarihsel ve kültürel özellikleri nedeniyle aynı kategoride bulunmaktadır. Yurtdışında film üreten Türk yönetmenlerden biri olan Ferzan Özpetek sinemasında İstanbul, bu çalışmanın konusunu oluşturmaktadır. Özpetek'in Hamam (1997) ile İstanbul Kırmızısı (2017) filmlerindeki İstanbul, İtalya'da yaşayan bir Türk yönetmenin gözünden sunulmaktadır. Bu sunum, doğu/batı ikiliği gibi temel bir karşıtlığın yanı sıra, İstanbul'un pharmakon olarak yorumlanması üzerinde temellenmektedir. Yunanca kökenli bir kelime olan pharmakon, şifa ve zehir anlamına gelmektedir. Pharmakon kelimesinin bu paradoksal yapısı-ya/ya da‖ ayrımına değil,-hem/hem de‖ birlikteliğine dayanmaktadır. Buradan hareketle, Ferzan Özpetek sinemasında İstanbul kentinin, film karakterleri üzerinde aynı anda ilaç ve zehir etkisi gösteren pharmakon niteliği taşıdığını söylemek olanaklıdır. Bu çerçevede, Jacques Derrida'nın pharmakon sözcüğünün çok yönlülüğüne yaptığı vurgu dikkate alınmıştır. Çalışmada ilk olarak amaçlanan, Ferzan Özpetek filmlerinde İstanbul imgesini pharmakon kavramı aracılığıyla incelemektir. İkinci olarak ise, İstanbul'un barındırdığı doğu/batı ikiliği başta olmak üzere diğer karşıtlıkları, pharmakon sözcüğünün çok yönlülüğü kapsamında irdelemektir. İstanbul'un yakın tarihli temsillerinin incelenmesi amaçlandığı için çalışmada örnek olarak Hamam ile İstanbul Kırmızısı filmleri ele alınmıştır.

Nel 1928 lo scrittore agrigentino scrive il “Film-Novelle”, "Sex Personen suchen einen Autor", una sceneggiatura in tedesco a due mani con Adolf Lantz, Pirandello racconta l’antefatto al dramma dei "Sei personaggi": l’incontro delle persone con l’autore e la loro trasformazione in personaggi teatrali. Nel passaggio dalla scrittura drammaturgica alla versione cinematografica, Pirandello non intende realizzare semplicemente un adattamento ma, piuttosto, una vera e propria riscrittura. Una riscrittura che a distanza di quasi ottanta anni sembra trovare piena consapevolezza nel testo cinematografico di Ferzan Ozpetek, "Magnifica presenza", che ripercorre le tappe della riscrittura pirandelliana. L’intervento vuole dimostrare come un grande regista abbia recuperato il materiale più nascosto dello scrittore siciliano per creare una nuova forma intertestuale che supera la dimensione letteraria.

Yılmaz’ın, filmlerinde mutlaka arzu, gerçek ve başarısızlık arasındaki bağ ile ortaya konulan kızgınlığa yer veren İspanyol yönetmen Luis Bunuel’in Viridiana, Simon Del Desierto ve La Voie Lactee Filmlerinde Katolik İnancı Yansımaları Üzerine Bir İnceleme adlı çalışmadır.
Üçüncü metin ortak çalışma olarak hem benim hem de yüksek lisans ikinci tez danışmanlığını yaptığım Ebru Beyazıt Aptourachman’a ait Sıra Dışı Bir Atinalı Theodoros Angelopoulos’un Sinemasına Yolculuk adlı bir çalışmadır. Bu metin Ebru’nun “20. yüzyıl Yunan tarihindeki politik dönüşümler ve bunun Theodoros Angelopoulos sinemasındaki temsili” adlı yüksek lisans tezinden üretilmiştir. Bu kitapta böyle bir çalışmanın
olmasıyla birlikte kaybettiğim değerli yönetmen ve arkadaşım Theodoros Angelopoulos için bir saygı duruşu niteliği taşımaktadır.
Dördüncü metin yüksek lisans öğrencim Serdar İleri’nin  dünya sinemasının en çok izlenen yönetmenlerinden olan Pedro Almodovar ile ilgili hazırladığı “Almodovar’dan Daha Almodovar”: Acı ve Zafer Filmi İzleğinde Bir Almodovar Monografisi adlı çalışmadır.
Beşinci metin Faik Kartelli’nin hazırladığı her yeni filmde daha farklı anlatım biçimlerini cesurca deneyen ve bunları estetiğine kalıcı olarak ilave eden yönetmen Ferzan Özpetek Sinemasında İnsan Mekân ve Zaman İlişkisi Bağlamında Görselİşitsel Kompozisyon adlı çalışmadır.
Altıncı metin ise benim hazırlamış olduğum Sinemada Docudrama

Sekizinci metin, ortaya çıktığı günden beri televizyon dizilerinin izleyiciler üzerinde etkili mesajlar oluşturan yapımlar vardır. Bu yapımlara Melih Tomak eleştirel bir bakış açısıyla hazırladığı Erkek Kimliği Üzerinden Şiddetin Meşrulaştırılması: Eşkiya Dünyaya Hükümdar Olmaz adlı çalışmadır. Kitabın son olarak dokuzuncu metni Osman Dikiciler’in hazırladığı sinemanın asıl sorunsalı olan izleyiciye ulaşabilme durumlarının nasıl olduğuna dair 2000 Sonrası Türk Sinemasında Salon Sorunu ve Tekelleşmeye Karşı Alternatif Gösterim Arayışları adlı çalışmadır.
Bu kitapta özgün derleme olarak yer alan makalelerin yazarların en büyük ortak özelliği benim öğrencilerimin olmasıdır. Her birinin hangi yıl fakültede öğrencim olduklarını tam olarak anımsayamamakla birlikte benimle olan iş arkadaşlıkları ve her şeyden önemlisi gönül dostlukları sanki dünyada var olduğum günden bugüne kadar gelmiş gibi…

When the film Hamam was screened in Turkey, there was a great outcry claiming that this was a totally distorting, orientalizing, and wholly untrue account of what goes on in a traditional Turkish bath. Reading any tourist guide, one indeed will be informed that no Turkish man after his circumcision will ever show himself naked in front of another man. The true movie's scandal, however, was not the depiction of male nudity and intimacy as such, but the public disclosing of a strictly tabooed homosocial and indeed homosexual practice. While homosexuality is not forbidden by law, it nevertheless still does not exist in an acknowledged social space, unless in the very marginalized and stigmatized practice of cross-dressing and transsexuality. Recent developments like the tentative emergence of a gay club scene in cities like Istanbul, Izmir, and Bodrum notwithstanding, the fact remains that coming out of the closet proves to be an extremely painful, if not impossible act for most Turks. But while it is quite easy as a man to have sex with men in Turkey (with those men hardly ever calling themselves gay), lesbian sexuality remains completely invisible in public life.

This essay explores the potential for both transcultural thinking and methodological diversity in translation studies through a discussion of three twentieth-century Turkish cultural figures: national leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, revolutionary poet Nâzım Hikmet and openly gay-identified filmmaker Ferzan Özpetek. In drawing out and reexamining the possible textual points of communication that link them, as well as the divergent models of modernity, masculinity, linguistic invention and creativity that set them apart, the discussion thus reengages with the ever-present possibility for a decentered, multiple and migrant “Meta-terranean” translational culture: one that complicates present understandings of fixed territorial divisions, gender identities, and linguistic zones and renews the potential for alternative conduits for communication across space, time and cultural difference.

After the scandal caused by Özpetek's 1997 directorial debut Hamam, the then Turkish Minister for Culture withdrew the film from competition for Turkey's entry for the 1998 Academy Awards. Needless to say, the act only garnered Özpetek more international attention, elevating Hamam to a nearly 'cult' status, made even more acute by the its being officially 'stigmatized'. It is almost as though the film offers 'too much' in terms of potential for critical enquiry, perhaps quite in line with the excess that defines Istanbul itself, within the space of which the grand narrative of the post/imperial city and the micro-narratives of self-discovery, gender, identity and belonging constantly ebb and flow, clashing and re/inventing one another. In the present paper, I wish to concentrate on what may be called 'transgressive border-crossings' engaged in by the film's protagonists in two poignant instances of 'hamam spying', which – though effected in different configurations, for different purposes, and with drastically different consequences – introduce positions of 'uninitiated' novices kept outside looking in. That the Turkish bath constitutes one of the most potent tropes of the eroticised 'Orient' in imaginings of the East is of little surprise. Bathers, odalisques, shimmering pools, sweltering stone chambers and characteristic domed roofs have been amply recorded by artists of various proveniences and aesthetic proclivities. That Istanbul occupies the fabled and mythologized strategic location of at once a gateway and a wall – even less so, what with its architecture of borders and thresholds. Ferzan Özpetek’s films are known for overtly breaching the subject of queer identities in Italian mainstream cinema. Popular music, however, often complicates the inclusive representations claimed by films in which queer and other non-dominant identities are visible. Where these identities are positioned and which space their members can claim are other key factors for a critical appraisal of their representations. Songs and their placement can produce different associative audiovisual combinations between Italian and non-Italian music on the one hand, and queer and other non-dominant identities on the other. The few camp songs heard where queer characters are shown outside their space and their systematic aural erasure illustrate the limited ‘audibility’ these films allow for queer identities despite their visibility. In this article, I discuss the interaction between popular music and space in the films of Ferzan Özpetek, looking at what I term ‘conditions of the audible’ and considering how these audiovisual representations can situate queer identities in the shifting landscape of Italian mainstream cinema. The way these identities are spatially and musically contained, I argue, can complicate their newly found visibility and the transnational dimension in which Özpetek’s films are often located. While Özpetek did make queer identities visible, these representations inescapably negotiate the national – a dimension where queerness remains spatially and musically contained and Othered.
