Arberesh

In the 6th century BCE, the Roman civilization flourished as a continuation of the perfect culture in Etruria (Truri, alb., = The Brain, eng.) and Latium (Albanum / Arbanum). In the 5th century, the book Mythologiæ or the Science of Untruth got published for the first time. Since the book would not have tilted the scale if it was alone, the creation of the poems Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid co-occurred. Iliad itself does not prove the Castle of Star (Illi, Ylli, Illion, alb.) or Troy as a place at the entrance of the Strait of Dardanelles.

Vëllimi i fundit poetik i Buzëdhelprit Telet e zëmrës, botuar vitin e shkuar në Prishtinë, shënon një sukses të ri për letërsinë arbëreshe dhe atë shqiptare në përgjithësi. Në këtë artikull analizohen disa nga temat kryesore që trajtohen në këtë vëllim, të cilat e njohin lexuesin shqiptar të përtej detit me jetën e katundit arbëresh dhe njerëzve të tij. Interes të veçantë për autoren e shkrimit paraqet gjuha që përdor autori, një formë standarde e arbërishtes. Kjo formë përbën një pasurim të shqipes në përgjithësi dhe autorja e shkrimit këmbëngul që disa struktura bazë të kësaj forme t’u bëhen të njohura nxënësve në të gjitha trojet shqiptare që në shkollë në mënyrë që në të ardhmen ata të kenë mundësi ta shfrytëzojnë këtë burim të pasurimit të gjuhës së tyre dhe të shijojnë edhe këtë pjesë të letërsisë së tyre kombëtare.

Von einem nationalen Standpunkt betrachtet wurde die Kultur der Italoalbaner und Italogriechen als ,,linguistische Minderheit“ marginalisiert und aufgegeben – mit dem Ergebnis, dass ihre Sprachen nicht mehr an den Schulen unterrichtet werden. Musik hatte immer eine Schlüsselrolle in den Gemeinden gespielt und die besondere Verbindung aus Musik und dem Klang dieser Sprache verfehlt niemals seine Wirkung, unabhängig davon, ob sie verstanden wird. Sie begleitet die Italogriechen und Italoalbaner durch den Zyklus des Lebens, zu bedeutenden Festen, während des Karneval, zu Hochzeiten und Beerdigungen. In dieser Einführung möchte ich die reiche Kultur der ländlichen Musiktraditionen Süditaliens von einer anderen Seite betrachten, indem ich sie mit denen der Nachbargemeinden vergleiche, wo es auch Tarantelle und Kalimere gibt, obwohl der Dialekt nicht mit Balkansprachen vermischt ist und ihre Gemeinden keinen orthodoxen Hintergrund haben, die den mysteriösen ,,Süden“ (in der anthropologischen Schule Italiens kurz “Il Sud” genannt) einst dominiert haben. Auf diese Weise lassen sich die Formen entdecken, die die Gemeinden der Arbëresh gegenüber anderen auszeichnen, die vallje und ajrët und eine besondere Form des mehrstimmingen Musizierens, die von Musikethnologen als Weltkulturerbe des Balkan und Italiens anerkannt wird.

This paper explores languaging practices in the Sicilian Arbëresh communities of Piana degli Albanesi & Santa Cristina Gela. Arbëresh is considered an endangered variety of Albanian characterised by code-switching; which is marked as concomitant with language incompetence and attrition. At first glance, the instances of Romance (Italian and Sicilian) speech embedded within the Arbëresh matrix may appear to be code-mixing or code-switching; this paper argues that this is not the case. Rather, the use of Romance codes in Arbëresh speech is part of a distinct language practice - which this paper also names Arbëresh - defined by [fixed forms of] translanguaging, language mixing and fusion/syncretism. This study therefore build on current emergent theories of translanguaging, and suggests that translanguaging has practical implications for the maintenance of Arbëresh. Repositioning the focus from the lens of endangered languages to view the variety as speech practice involving translanguaging/mixing/fusion offers a practical alternative to previous studies which have addressed maintenance issues by suggesting the teaching of Standard Albanian or creation a hybrid form of Arbëresh and Standard Albanian. This paper argues that maintenance efforts should represent Arbëresh speech as it is, with the Romance code elements respected as part of a specific language practice, in preference to purist ideology which has already been found to have limited pedagogical impact.

This paper reconstructs the historical events of the library of the Italo-Albanian College of Sant'Adriano, founded in 1794 in San Demetrio Corone, an arbëreshë common in the province of Cosenza, in Calabria. From byzantine seminary, the college became in the nineteenth century a secular school. The library of the institute did not follow the fortunes of the school, remaining in fact a seminar library. This caused a loss of interest and an unstoppable lowering of the use of the library by the collegiate population. Consequently, the library passed by the degree of auxiliary tool for the advancement of research, to the other, lessprestigious, of simple historical evidence.

'Guarda il golfo d'Ambracia dove una volta fu perduto un mondo per amor d'una donna, amabile, tenera cosa!' esclama il giovane Aroldo per bocca di Byron ( 1 )". In questi toni estatici, l'inviato del Corriere della Sera Ugo Ojetti salutava il profilarsi delle coste albanesi al suo arrivo a Prevesa il 1° luglio del 1901. Imbarcatosi a Brindisi per raccogliere notizie su un paese che stava occupando sempre più spazio nella politica italiana in Adriatico, Ojetti scrisse dei bellissimi reportage, con cui apriamo questa panoramica dell'immagine italiana dell'Albania nei primi decenni del XX secolo.

This paper discusses productive morphology in the integration of Sicilian verbs and nouns into the Arberesh linguistic matrix. Productivity is the grammatical processes of word formation used by native speakers of a language practice In Alto-Belice Arberesh of the Metropolitan City of Palermo region, lexical material of Sicilian origin were historically “converted” to the Arberesh matrix in specific ways; such as the borrowing of the Sicilian infinitive form -iri, -ari plus the dropping of the final /i/, which is then taken as the root verb, conjugated in all plural forms. These verbs retain older Sicilian form such as retention of /mb/ and /nd/ where Sicilian has evolved to realise this as /mm/ and /nd/ i.e. older Sicilian rispundiri ‘to respond’ > Arb. të rispundir, but modern Sicilian rispunniri. The /mb/ form continues to be a strong feature of Alto-Belice Arberesh speech, attested to by the forms Shëmbria ‘St. Mary,’ zëmbra ‘heart,’ mbishkar ‘mix’ < Sic. mischiari and mbrakulla ‘miracle’ < Sicilian miraculu. This paper will present data from natural conversations recorded for research on this topic.

Il volume ricostruisce l'intera vicenda biografica di Giovanni Strigari, interessante figura di avvocato e politico di origini italo-albanesi, figlio del patriota arbereshe Demetrio e nipote del noto storico Pasquale Villari. La sua attività si svolse tra Napoli e i Campi Flegrei: dal 1904 al 1913 rappresentò in Parlamento i comuni di Pozzuoli, Bacoli, Monte di Procida e le isole di Ischia, Procida e Ventotene, che ne costituivano il Collegio elettorale. Sulla base di documenti inediti sono ricostruiti i rapporti di amicizia e il sodalizio politico con Emanuele Gianturco, oltre al tentativo di costruire un partito di parlamentari meridionali. Pur essendo giolittiano, di idee liberali e democratiche, Strigari ricevette il sostegno di Matilde Serao che ne appoggiò la prima candidatura. In Parlamento collaborò con Enrico De Nicola e Francesco Saverio Nitti. Fu tra i redattori della legge per il suffragio universale maschile e riuscì ad ottenere la 'legge speciale' per il risanamento della 'bassa Pozzuoli'. Il saggio è corredato da numerosi documenti, articoli, tratti da riviste e giornali d'epoca, foto e immagini inedite che contribuiscono a ricostruire il contesto storico-politico di inizio Novecento (ISBN 978-88-99821-52-4).

All'interno dell'archivio privato dei Sanseverino, collocato all'Archivio di Stato di Napoli, è conservata la “Dichiarazione della p.nte Pianta del Feudo d’Acquaformosa”, una mappa del centro abitato di Acquaformosa, comune in provincia di Cosenza.
La cartografia fa luce sulle evoluzioni urbanistiche e sul paesaggio agrario di un territorio, all'interno del Parco Nazionale del Pollino, che in età medievale conobbe uno slancio demografico causato dalle migrazioni albanesi.
L'articolo si pone l'obiettivo di inaugurare una serie di studi storico-archeologici relativi ai paesi arbëreshë del Pollino in età medievale e moderna.

Proprio in virtù del loro statuto di elementi legati fortemente al discorso (cfr. Bazzanella 1990) e considerata la rilevanza che il contesto, sia linguistico che extra-linguistico, ha per una loro corretta interpretazione, i segnali discorsivi consentono di affrontare alcune importanti questioni legate a#$ 0('5#+4%$ 6+##3'5/'#+scenza linguistica in contesto minoritario. 1 Costituisce una felice eccezione il lavoro di Silvia Dal Negro 2005 che tuttavia è dedicato soprattutto a varietà di tipo walser.

Vena di Maida, as an Albanian speaking village is part of the Comune of Maida in the province of Catanzaro. Originally it had a separate administration ad for several times the vinoti (as are called the inhabitants) asked for a new authonomy. The article speaks about this problem.

The ruins of the ancient town of PIRI are in southern Albania. A French royal map clearly depicts Southeast Europe in 1705. In continuance, it reaffirms  E-PIR-US (e Pirit, Alb.) was Lower Albania. The European legacy for the Arbëresh reign of George Castrioti Scanderbeg is in his title as the Leader of Epirus and Albania.

Heschel) Nel panorama della ricezione dei documenti del concilio Vaticano II vari studi sono già stati dedicati alla dichiarazione Nostra aetate del 28 ottobre 1965, riguardante le relazioni fra la Chiesa cattolica e le reli-gioni non cristiane. Ci si riferisce sia a monografie circa la sua genesi ed approvazione, sia a saggi che ne presentano l'attuazione, gli approfon-dimenti e gli sviluppi, fuori e dentro l'Italia. 1 Il presente contributo vuol colmare la lacuna che ha per orizzonte particolare gli italo-albanesi resi-denti in Italia, in modo specifico i fedeli e i pastori dell'eparchia di Piana degli Albanesi (Palermo).

This paper discusses discourses about the sociolinguistic character of the Arberesh language in the context of revitalization and maintenance efforts, and the need for a shift from a focus on diglossia to polynomic approaches. Theories of diglossia and polynomy make different claims about identity and language, and in the context of Arberesh this is particularly salient due to the varied approaches to identity and its relationship to language maintenance. I argue that diglossia-centric approaches to Arberesh language fail to recognise aspects of Arberesh identity that are rooted in the local regional and national Italian context, and thus posit Italian or the regional Romance languages as a threat. One of the consequences of diglossia-centric language policies is the reproduction of dominant language hierarchies that tend to divide rather than unify. By drawing comparisons with the Corsican approach, whereby [importantly] native Corsican academics have introduced the notion of polynomic language defined by internal variation (multiple centers of authenticity and authority) and by speaker recognition of unity in diversity. In the case of Arberesh, speakers have always recognised unity in linguistic variation, and this challenges the principles of dominant language ideologies, which have impacted on the speaker population in negative ways, leading to misrecognition of their own capacbilities to speak in their native language. I will argue that Arberesh studies and maintenance programs need to take the lead from the polynomic approach and thus avoid speaker misrecognition.

Questo articolo discute i discorsi sul carattere sociolinguistico della lingua arberesh nel contesto degli sforzi di rivitalizzazione e mantenimento, e la necessità di passare da un focus sulla diglossia ad approcci polinomici. Le teorie della diglossia e della polinomia fanno affermazioni diverse sull'identità e sul linguaggio, e nel contesto dell’Arberesh ciò è particolarmente rilevante a causa dei vari approcci all'identità e alla sua relazione con il mantenimento del linguaggio. Sostengo che gli approcci diglossia-centrici alla lingua arberesh non riescono a riconoscere aspetti dell'identità arberesh che sono radicati nel contesto italiano locale regionale e nazionale, e quindi pongono l'italiano o le lingue romanze regionali come una minaccia. Una delle conseguenze delle politiche linguistiche diglossia-centriche è la riproduzione di gerarchie linguistiche che tendono a dividere piuttosto che unificare. Facendo confronti con l'approccio corso, in base al quale accademici corsi hanno introdotto la nozione di linguaggio polinomico definito dalla variazione interna (centri multipli di autenticità e autorità) e dal riconoscimento del parlante dell'unità nella diversità. Nel caso dell’Arberesh, i parlanti hanno sempre riconosciuto l'unità nella variazione linguistica, e questo sfida i principi delle ideologie linguistiche dominanti, che hanno avuto un impatto negativo sulla popolazione dei parlanti, portando a un misconoscimento delle proprie capacità di parlare nella propria lingua madre. Sosterrò che gli studi e i programmi di manutenzione dell’Arberesh devono prendere l'iniziativa dall'approccio polinomico e quindi evitare il misconoscimento del parlante.

In the beginning, humans had a tongue (gjuhën, Shqip). Then, they could or couldn’t let go of the tongue (len…gjuhën, Shqip). Albanian natural tongue (Shqip) implies the use of the tongue in the mouth for
articulating (shqiptoj, Shqip) words. The eternity of Shqip (Speech) is in its words that are wordy clauses, phrases, parts of or short sentences. The Speech (Shqip) and other lan…guages (len…gjuhët, Shqip) carry these kinds of wordy clauses to prove the permanency of Shqip.
    The Speech (Shqip) had local and schooled forms in distant antiquity. Therefore, various types of writing appear now. Since the schooled style was in general use and carried later in the papers and books of lan…guages (len…gjuhëve, Shqip), it has been preserved unchanged. Its pieces, no matter how small are, every time get easily read and quickly understood using contemporary Shqip.
    The Speech (Shqip) was the first stratum in the Euro-Mediterranean area. It was the Speech (Shqip) of Nephilims (Nëfillimëve). The Shqip of today can be used to read and understand both words in other idioms and ancient writings.

Mercoledì 18 settembre 2019, anno del primo Centenario dell'istituzione dell'Eparchia degli Arbereshe dell'Italia continentale, Lungro ha vissuto la grande festa della visita del Patriarca ecumenico Bartolomeo. Cronaca di quei momenti carichi di storia e di gioia profonda.

The Central State Archive of Tirana (AQSH) keeps in store twenty one letters sent by Santori to De Rada in the period 1843-1869. They are of relevant importance since they contain first hand information on Santori’s life, work and religious activity, as well as an important evidence of the long-standing relationship and cooperation (often at a distance) between the two Arbëreshë writers. A careful reading of the letters allowed us to understand also the genesis and the process of publishing some literary works by Santori, e. g. the Canzoniere and Il prigioniero politico (1848). In the case of the Canzoniere it was also possible to determine the place where it was printed and published, Naples.
All letters are written in Italian but one written in Albanian and sent in April 1869 from San Marco Argentano to Corigliano Calabro, where De Rada worked as a teacher in the local Gymnasium. In this letter (even with many missing parts) Santori informs De Rada about his economic difficulties and how he tries to earn some money thanks to his intelligence making original multiple spinners. Here we present only some of the letters and try to draw a thematic path regarding alphabets, places, editions etc. quoting from time to time excerpts from the letters.

Breve resoconto del ritrovamento del manoscritto originale dell'opera più famosa di Vincenzo Stratigò, autore lungrese del XIX secolo, e ritenuto fino al 2011 definitivamente smarrito. Il manoscritto si conserva a Tirana presso la biblioteca del settore di albanologia dell'Accademia delle Scienze (oggi QSA).

A chronicle by Gjovalin Shkurtaj about the second visit of Arberesh students from the Università della Calabria (Rende) to Albania during the summer 1978. The group of 11 students was leaded by prof. Francesco Solano, head of the chair of Albanian Language and Literature at the same University.
