On 25 September September, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as the agreed framework for international development.

It is the successor to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). However, unlike the MDGs, the 2030 Agenda presents a much wider scope by deliberately and more fully incorporating economic and environmental sustainability, as well as the aspiration of many countries for peaceful and inclusive societies. The agenda also applies to all countries rather than just the developing countries. In this regard, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is more ambitious envisaging the eradication of poverty, the systematic tack-ling of climate change and building peaceful, resilient, equitable and inclusive societies. The Agenda, unlike the MDGs, has a stand-alone Goal on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. In addition, there are gender equality targets in other Goals, and a more consistent call for sex disaggregation of data across many indicators.

UN Women Communications and Advocacy Section in New York conducted an analysis of what the 17 SDGs adopted mean to women in order to inform strategic interventions building on the efforts of localization at country and regional levels. This analysis has been collated in this publication and linked to UN Women Eastern and Southern Africa Regional and Country Office priorities. Concrete examples programming interventions by UN Women country offices in the region are pro led in relation to specific SDGs and how those streams of interventions could lead to localization efforts. This has been done through an analysis of all annual reports submitted by regional/ multi/country offices to identify work streams feeding into the localization of sustainable development goals. The team comprising UN Women’s consultant on SDGs, Knowledge Management and Research Specialist and UN Women’s Regional Communications Assistant, under the leadership of the Deputy Regional Director, linked to existing analysis provided by UN Women on Women and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The publication showcases how women are affected by each of the 17 proposed SDGs, as well as how women and girls can — and will — be key to achieving each of these goals. Data and stories of the impact of each SDG on women and girls is illustrated. UN Women Eastern and Southern Africa region’s efforts and interventions as they relate to SDGs are also discussed under each SDG, including our programmes, intergovernmental work and advocacy for policy change.

This publication is intended to help countries in Eastern and Southern Africa understand and appreciate the linkages between SDGs and women and girls in their localization efforts and in establishing various partnerships and networks that feed into the vision of localizing SDGs at the country and regional levels.

Development has come, distrubed the tribal life, exploited the natural resources and dilluted the tribal areas and culture but the benefits of development hardly reached to the tribal women. Rather her life has made more vulnerable.

The empowerment of women has been identified as a way to overcome inefficiencies in the allocation of resources within the family and so improve agrarian households' productivity. However, achieving diversification is not necessarily empowering for women and some initiatives may worsen their position. When women earn an income, they are more likely than men to spend it on food, education and health care for their children and families. The participation of women is crucial for the growth of an economy. The involvement of women in income related activities increases the level of empowerment. An empowered woman can exercise her power in her own choice in making household decision, contribution to household income, and control over resources and political or development activities. She can enjoy more benefits or rights in access to resources, control over her assets, and participation in household decision making. An employed woman has more capacity to face sudden household shocks. There is relationship between economic development and women's empowerment defined as improving the ability of women to access the constituents of development in particular health, education, earning opportunities, rights, and political participation. Therefore, there is a need of empowering women for uplifting their status as well as the status of their family, community and nation. Keeping in view, the significance of the issue, present study was conducted. Introduction and Statement of the Problem Women empowerment is one of the most important issues in the present day of the world, women have a great contribution in the economic development process though employment. Women's economic empowerment is increasingly being acknowledged as a prerequisite for sustainable development and inclusive growth. Such empowerment is about the rights of the poor and the excluded and is part of an effort towards building equitable societies. In the past, there has been a general concern over improvements in conditions of health, education and the social well-being of women. It was, however, rarely recognized that such development is contingent on the realization of women's economic empowerment and autonomy in management and ownership of productive assets. Women's empowerment includes mobility, voice, decision-making in the family, property rights and freedom from domestic abuse. The explanatory variables are individual, household, husband, and geographical characteristics as well as differences in spouses' perspectives of women's empowerment. Women across the world continue to face problem, experiencing higher barriers than men in access to education, skills development and labour markets, lower salaries and income, as well as less access to productive assets and inputs, compared to men. Empowerment cannot be visualized with single dimension rather multidimensional assessment in terms of various components of women life and their status would bring a clear conception. So, this paper tries to give a basic idea about the condition and status of women in terms of employment, education, health and social status.

The study explores the lives of seven sisters; the Cabrera sisters namely: Lorena, Abcede, Penelope, Minerva, Nelfa, Nemesia and Lualhati through the stages of their lives from childhood, adolescence, adulthood and through their old age. These women were born between 1920 & 1940. They survived the Second World War and witnessed the changes in their society until the present time.

Their stories reflect the struggles and changes in the women’s movement both in the Philippines and in the world in general. Oppression and discrimination happen in all institutions of society: family, Church and educational institutions. Throughout the women’s lives, they experienced oppression from the simplest forms to the worst. In the family, in many societies, particularly in Asia, sons are favored over daughters. Sons are given more responsibility in decision-making because they are believed to be the pillars of the families, while daughters are just seen as reproduction vehicles only since they cannot carry the name of their fathers upon marriage. At the workplace, sexual harassment and other name-calling is mostly experienced by women. In schools, service-oriented courses like nursing, tourism, and teaching are considered “women’s courses” because they are an extension of the domestic services women have traditionally provided in the home, while engineering, and other science-based courses are mostly taken by men since they are considered “rational”. Until now, some churches like the Catholic Church still prohibit women to become priests.

The research here tried to understand the meaning of sisterhood among the siblings and the women’s movement; as well as the innate feminism among the Asian women, which we call “organic feminism”.

Organic feminism is not influenced by Western form of feminism instead it is in every Asian woman’s psyche due to their shared experiences of oppression, exploitation and discrimination, not only among the men but also among other women.

The research strengthened the belief of other feminists in Asia, that Asian women are organic feminists that could be further strengthened in our fight against oppression and discrimination. Furthermore, organic feminists do not only see women as oppressed in the way the poor, differently-abled or children are seen regardless of sex and gender. Rather, they are seen as agents of change in society.

This report presents findings of a baseline study on the employment situation of Women and Girls with Disabilities (WGDs) in Mayuge and Iganga Districts. The study was undertaken for reasons; to reduce poverty among WGDs; to increase awareness and prioritization of WGDs in public and private sector employment policies and plans; to influence local Government legislation and policy to provide protection; and to eliminate discrimination and ensure equal rights and affirmative action for WGDs in the job market in Mayuge and Iganga Districts. The results are expected to inform the interventions aimed at improving the employment situation of Women and Girls with Disabilities (WGDs) in Mayuge and Iganga Districts In addition, the report provides a baseline assessment against which the project performance will be measured. The study used a mixed methods design and data was collected between 21st to 29th September, 2017 in eight sampled areas of Mayuge Town Council, Magamaga Town Council, Imanhiro Sub County in Mayuge District and Bulamagi Sub County, Iganga Northern Division, Iganga Central Division, Buyanga Sub-County and Namungalwe Sub- County in Iganga District.
IDIWA desires to reduce poverty among WGDs and to increase awareness and prioritization of WGDs in public and private sector. According to the Uganda Poverty Assessment Report 2016, 19.7% of the people live below the poverty line. Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) are the most impacted as it is estimated that 80% of PWDs live in conditions of long-term poverty. WGDs are discriminated and excluded from employment and economic opportunities, and are among the poorest in their communities. They do not own what they produce because the land belongs to their family members and spouses. They lack the required collateral to secure credit for investment, and the majority of WGDs are single mothers without any source of income. In addition, employers are hesitant to hire WGDs even when they are qualified for a position because they equate disability to inability to perform.
Four methods of data collection were employed: Questionnaire Survey, Interviews with Key Informants, Focused Group Discussions and Documentary Review. The survey was guided by key leading questions concentrated at establishing the background data of all respondents’ vis-à-vis the employment situation of Women and Girls with Disabilities (WGDs) in Mayuge and Iganga Districts; identifying institutions that can employ WGDs in the two districts; assessing the level of inclusiveness of human resource policies in terms of gender and disability; ascertaining human rights awareness and attitudes of respondents; and determining their willingness to establish facilities for reasonable accommodation for PWDs in the work place.
The findings are presented through the use of pictures, graphs, tables and maps and organized by objective. From the data collection, lessons learnt, recommendations and conclusions have been provided in such a way that they are specific to the demographic population, e.g. WGDs, Households (HHs) of WGDs, Government officials mandated to handle PWDs issues, Institutions that can employ WGDs in the two districts, etc.
