Gobekli Tepe Temple - Sanliurfa, Turkey

The discovery of prehistoric cave paintings in the nineteenth century led to the shocking realisation that humans have been creating art for over 30,000 years. Episode two reveals how the very first pictures were created, and how images may have triggered the greatest change in human history.

To discover the first two dimensional paintings we need to look at the art created in caves such as Altamira, Chauvet and Lascaux; these were created roughly 35,000 years, the time Archeologists identify with a ‘creative explosion’.

The first of these cave paintings were discovered in Altemira by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, and his 8yr old daughter Maria, in 1879. The paintings they discovered on the walls of the caves were of animals such as aurochs, a long extinct relative of the bison. As these matched similar stone-age images he had seen, Sautuola concluded they were prehistoric. When the caves were opened to the public, however, they were considered a hoax, and unfortunately despite trying to clear his name, his discovery was not scientifically accepted until long after his death. Following this the caves of Lascaux and Chauvet came to light, and it is said that when Picasso saw images of the caves he declared “we have learned nothing”.

Today artists create images of every aspect of life, but back then the images were almost exclusively of animals,  in particular horses, bison and reindeer. The expert Henri Breuil believed the paintings to be linked to rituals that increased the chances of a successful hunt, however more recent archeology has shown that the animals depicted were not those eaten by the people of the time. In addition some of the paintings were in very hard to reach areas of the caves and featured dots and lines. However, it is easy to take a modern view such as this and miss the point completely, that being how did we learn to project our 3D world into 2D.

There are very similar paintings to be found in the Drakensburg Mountains of South Africa, however unlike their European cousins, these were not produced thousands of years ago, but much more recently. These images were produced by the San “bush men” and although they do not produce paintings like this today, Professor David Lewis Williams discovered papers from the late nineteenth century by a German settler that documented the life and rituals of the San people. It became clear to Williams that their religion was based around traveling in a trance state to a spirit world and that they documented in these pictures their experiences of the trance. Often these transitory states involved animals, and the animals depicted were normally large or powerful, such as the Eland, that were respected by the San people. Williams also noticed another similarity with their European counterparts, that of the dots and lines.

Research into altered states, such as the trances of the San people, show that on entering these states, visual disturbances similar to migraine aura that involved lines and dots occur. Furthermore, these images can also be produced through sensory deprivation, for example from being placed deep in a cave for a long time. Prehistoric people, it appears, had hallucinations , which took the form of things that were close to them, such as the horses, bison and aurochs. These hallucinations were remembered and prehistoric people then recreated them on the walls of their caves.

Returning to the European palaeolithic caves, it seems that 12,000 years ago people stopped painting. We don’t know why, but the discovery of Göbekli Tepe, in Southern Turkey may hold the answer.  When excavated the site revealed monolithic pillars built around 12,000 years ago, dated to just the time that the paintings in caves seem to stop. These stone pillars feature carvings of animals such as those in the caves. The effort in creating these stone pillars would have required considerable  labour and organisation, the workers for example, all needed feeding. Recent research has shown that modern wheat can be traced to wild wheat that grows within 20 miles of this site, which has lead scholars to speculate that this was the birthplace of agricultural farming and, in turn, complex society,'civilisation', itself.

A Figurine, from the Çatalhöyük settlement (7300 BC), with signs that tell us that, when compared to the signs at Gobekli Tepe, (11-12000 BC) they related to a center that marked the arising of Venus. Other information related to depicted sign language is collated and provides a reason to think that Gobekli Tepe was a center that was both cosmological based and a gathering place for the clans of the culture.

Karahan Tepe is a Pre-Pottery Neolithic sanctuary situated beyond the eastern limits of the Harran Plain in southeast Anatolia. Located on a roughly north-northeast to south-southwest hill ridge, it includes a series of stone settings, with the possible presence also of now lost stone enclosures of a similar age. Most likely Karahan Tepe was a regional centre for the veneration of natural forces, perhaps associated with the symbol of the snake. On site investigations indicate the rocky outcrop could have acted as a backsight for observations of the bright star Deneb (α Cyg) in the Cygnus constellation and the Milky Way's Great Rift, which in the proposed epoch of construction, ca. 8500-8000 BC, would have set into a prominent flat-topped hill located 1 mile (1.6 kilometres) north-northwest of Karahan Tepe. Also discussed is Karahan's true name, Keçili, as well as the sanctuary's possible relationship to Göbekli Tepe, 23 miles (37 kilometres) away, and the suspected changes in cosmologically beliefs and practices that accompanied the Neolithic revolution in southwest Asia, ca. 9000 BC.

With the opening of Sanliurfa's new archaeological museum full attention has been given to its incredible reconstruction of Göbekli Tepe's Enclosure D, complete with its twin monoliths standing an almighty 5.5 metres (18 feet) high, and its stone-by-stone reconstruction of Nevali Çori's cult building. Yet lurking in the back of one of its display areas is a stone carving from Göbekli Tepe that almost certainly shows either a penguin or the great auk. But which is it? Learning the answer could throw greater light on the geographical origins of the Göbekli builders.

Göbekli Tepe is the site of a series of stone enclosures built during the tenth and ninth millennia BC on an isolated mountaintop in southeast Anatolia (Turkish Asia Minor). Speculation has mounted regarding their orientation towards stellar objects, with Orion and Cygnus having already been proposed. Sirius is the latest star to be put forward as the primary focus of key monuments at the site. Yet such a conclusion is thwart with problems, not only in connection with the faint appearance and feeble movement of the star during the epoch in question, c. 9500-9000 BC, but also with respect to the orientation and layout of the enclosures themselves. Instead of being orientated to the south, the direction of Sirius, the enclosures are more likely directed to the north, the direction of liminal activities since the Upper Paleolithic age. In this respect, a more suitable stellar candidate for the orientation of the enclosures is Deneb, the brightest star in Cygnus, which marks the opening of the Milky Way's Dark Rift, seen universally in the past as an entrance to the sky-world.

Çalışma, ilkel insanın yaşamındaki dinamiklerin ne olduğunu görmeye çalışarak, kentlerin neden ortaya çıktığını anlamayı amaçlamıştır. İlkel insanın yaşayış şekli üzerine yapılan bu arayış daha önce birçok kez yapılmıştır. En ön plana çıkanı ise 18 yy. aydınlanma filozofları tarafından yapılan, toplum sözleşmesi fikrini oluşturdukları doğa durumu kurgusudur. Ancak ilkel insana dair bu algıysa günümüzde ciddi değişime uğramıştır. Aydınlanma filozoflarının akıl yürütme yoluyla ortaya çıkardığı kurgu yerini evrimsel biyoloji, arkeoloji, antropoloji, primatoloji gibi farklı bilimsel dayanaklar doğrultusunda oluşturulan kurgulara bırakmıştır. Bu çalışmada ise ilkel insanın toplumsal yapısının primatlara benzerken kent insanının toplumsal yapısının karıncalara benzetilmesi ayrımı sorgulanmıştır. İlkel insandan kent insanına, başka bir deyişle, primatlardan karıncalara olan serüvende, diğer primatlardan farklı olarak oluşan simgesel düşüncenin nasıl bir kırılma yarattığı gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır. Simgesel düşünceyle birlikte artık insan, insanı ve çevresini, benliğin ve nesnel dünyanın ötesinde temsiller üzerinden algılamaya başlamıştır. Gerçek, yerini temsilin doldurulmasını bekleyen bir boşluk halini almıştır. Simgesel düşünce mitlerin, efsanelerin, dinlerin, tam teşekküllü lisanın oluşmasını sağlamıştır. Kentlerin oluşum süreci ise, bu çalışma doğrultusunda, simgesel düşüncenin oluşturduğu temsiliyette, doğanın yerini insanın alması sonucu gerçekleşen bir mutasyondur. Başka bir değişle kültürün doğanın üzerine yerleşmesi sonucunda kentler oluşmuştur. Merkeze insanı alan düşünce yapısı mekânla etkileşiminde gayri doğal bir hal almasını sağlamıştır. Bu noktada ise niş inşası teorisi devreye girmektedir. Yani, canlıların çevre şartlarını kendi gereksinimlerine göre düzenlemesi. İnsanın doğayla olan bütüncül bağının çözülmesi ve algısında yaşadığı bu değişim, niş inşası sürecini insan tabanında, çevreden kopuk ve insanı temsil edecek şekilde oluşturmasını sağlamıştır. Sonuçta doğa artık kozmik ritmin, düzenin temsili değildir. Düzen yaratıcısı insandır. Kentlerde var olan “gayri doğal” kitlesel bağlılığın temeli kültürel yapıdır ve yine bu kültürel yapı mekânda, radikal değişimlere bizi itendir. Günümüz kentleri, niş üzerine niş inşa etmemizi sağlayan simgesel düşüncenin sadece ürünüdür. Kentlerin oluşumunda altyapıyı oluşturan ana etken, insanın fiziksel ihtiyaçları değildir. Ana etken, bilinen şekliyle, Göbekli Tepe ile başlayan ve Çatalhöyük başta olmak üzere birçok neolitik yerleşimde de etkilerini görebildiğimiz, kültürel altyapı, ritüellerin ve insanın temsilinin yaşadığı değişimdir.

ABSTRACT
This study examines spoken Arabic language in Harran with examples. It
aims to find out the features of this language of this region and the proverbs used by
people.
The research has indicated that as in other Arabic dialects in Harran, the first
letter of the words in the shape of kashkasha, istinta„, taltalatu bahra, failun are read
by kasra (a vowel sing indicating a short i), and pronouns of third person (he/she) are
pronounced by shadda (doubled consonant), and that it has the features of such
dialects imala and akalun al-baragis. It has further showed that Harran proverbs
have words which are used in classic literary language.

Sobre una colina llamada Göbekli Tepe, ubicada al sureste de Turquía, las excavaciones encabezadas por Klaus Schmidt descubrieron múltiples recintos, largos y megalíticos que datan entre 10, 000 y 8,000 años a.C. su presencia señala, al igual que muchos otros lugares, el inicio del Neolítico.

Öz: Anadolu yerleşme tarihi boyunca birçok medeniyete beşiklik yapmış ve bu durum tarihi, kültürel ve arkeolojik açıdan zengin bir mirasın ortaya çıkmasına katkıda bulunmuştur. Kültür turizmi kapsamında değerlendirilen destinasyonlardan birini oluşturan arkeolojik alanlar, ulusal ve uluslararası açıdan önemli bir yere sahip olmakla birlikte, geçmişe ilgi duyan insanların ziyaret ettikleri yerler arasındadır. Bunlar içerisinde Şanlıurfa ilinin 15 km kuzeydoğusunda merkeze bağlı Örencik Köyü yakınlarındaki 800 metre yüksekliğinde Germüş platosu üzerinde yer alan Göbekli Tepe oldukça önemlidir. Birçok Neolitik Dönem yerleşmesinin aksine Göbekli Tepe su kenarı, vadi ya da ovada kurulmayıp, Harran Ovası'nın kuzeyinde yüksek bir sahada manzaraya hâkim, ayrıca çevreden gelebilecek tehlikelere karşı güvenli bir konumda yer almaktadır. 1963 yılında Peter Benedict ve Halet Çambel tarafından gerçekleştirilen yüzey araştırmaları sonucunda arkeoloji dünyasına kazandırılmıştır. Tarihi M.Ö. 10.000'e kadar dayanan Göbekli Tepe'de yapılan arkeolojik kazı ve araştırmalar sonucunda elde edilen bulgulara bağlı olarak Anadolu'da şuana kadar kabul gören en eski inanç ve yerleşim yeri olduğu tespit edilmiştir. " T'' şeklindeki anıtsal taşlar ile simgelenen bu yerleşim yerinde yapılan kazılar sonucunda çok sayıda hayvan heykelinin yanı sıra çakmaktaşından aletler, obsidyen aletler, takı parçaları ve taş kaplar, öğütme taşları, hayvan elleri, yassı baltalar ile küçük figürünler açığa çıkartılmıştır. Yapılan arkeolojik çalışmalar sonucunda Bu yönüyle özgün bir yere sahip olan Göbekli Tepe, arkeolojik turizm açısından değerlendirilmesi gereken önemli yerlerden birisidir. Bu çalışmada, Göbekli Tepe'nin arkeolojik turizm potansiyeli ile bu potansiyelin coğrafi açıdan değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmış ve sahanın arkeolojik miras olarak önemi ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu kapsamda, Göbekli Tepe'nin arkeolojik açıdan önemi nedir? Bu alanın arkeolojik turizm bakımından önemi nedir? Göbekli Tepe'de arkeolojik turizm yapılıyor mu ve ne düzeyde gerçekleşmektedir? Arkeolojik turizm ve alanın koruma kullanma açısından dengesini sağlayan bir planlama çalışması var mı? Göbekli Tepe ve çevresi turizm alt-üst yapı hizmetleri açısından yeterli düzeyde mi? gibi sorulara cevap aranmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu çerçevede araştırma sahayla ilgili yapılmış bilimsel yayınlar, çeşitli tematik haritalar ve saha çalışmaları sonucunda toplanan veriler ışığında şekillendirilmiştir. Ayrıca elde edilen veriler SWOT analiziyle değerlendirilmiştir.

The intention of this essay is to phenomenologically explore the ways in which a Neolithic person may have interacted within the space of Göbekli Tepe in light of archeological evidence. Specifically, we will examine 1) participation in construction, 2) possible understandings of symbolism, and 3) what rituals may have occurred therein. More specifically, we will attempt to limit our study to Enclosure D at Göbekli Tepe. Without ignoring the surrounding context, this micro scale approach should allow a more direct focus on understanding how a Neolithic person may have viewed this obviously meaningful space {NOTE: this paper was written before an understanding of the Taş Tepeler culture was developed and follows many of the suppositions originally posited by Schmidt}

ABSTRACT
“Göbekli Tepe which is stationed in Turkey’s southeast province Şanlıurfa, has profoundly effected the comprehensions regarding both history of humanity and the constitution of human sociality. Common knowledge regarding how the human history evolved, must be reevaluated after the findings acquired from “Göbekli Tepe”. The construction of a sanctuary before herding and agricultural acitivities, refutes the common argument which relates the emergence of religion and symbolic communication to settlement. “Göbekli Tepe” provides new insights related to the discussions on which characteristics cuased mankind to the stage of society from tribes. There is a resemblance between the the sources of human communication and the development of religious symbols. The major aspect distinguishing humans from other living things depends on the ability of acting cooperatively and using symbolic and linguistic communication at the same time. “Göbekli Tepe” displays the resemblances between human linguistic communication and the development of religion.

Türkiye’nin Şanlıurfa ilinde bulunan “Göbekli Tepe”deki kazılar, insanlık tarihinin yanı sıra, insani toplumsallığın nasıl bir biçimde tesis edildiğine dair kavrayışları da derinden etkilemiştir. İnsanlık tarihinin nasıl bir biçimde gerçekleştiğine dair ortak kabullerin, “Göbekli Tepe”de elde edilen bulgular ışığında yeniden gözden geçirilmesi zorunludur. İnsanların, tarım ve hayvancılık faaliyetlerinde bulunmadan önce bir tapınak inşa etmiş olmaları, dinin ve gelişmiş sembolik iletişimin, yerleşik hayata geçildikten sonra geliştiğine dair ortak kabulleri ortadan kaldırmıştır. “Göbekli Tepe,” insanın kabileden topluma geçmesini sağlayan asıl niteliklerinin neler olduğuna dair tartışmaların, yeni veriler ışığında yeniden ele alınmasını sağlamıştır. İnsani iletişimin kökenleri ile dinsel sembollerin gelişimi arasında benzerlikler mevcuttur. İnsanı diğer canlılardan ayıran başlıca niteliği, eşgüdümlü bir biçimde eylemde bulunurken, sembolik ve dilsel iletişimi en mükemmel bir biçimde gerçekleştirebilmesidir. “Göbekli Tepe,” insani dilsel iletişim ile dinin gelişimi arasında benzerlikler olduğunu göstermektedir.

Göbeklitepe kazılarından, insanların bundan 12 bin yıl önce gök hesapları yaptıklarını ve bunları simgelere indirgeyerek üç boyutlu metinler/mekanlar oluşturduklarını anlıyoruz. Bunları Göbeklitepe insanları mı oluşturdu yoksa daha eski başka insanlardan mı ödünç aldılar? Bu simgeselleştirmenin başlangıcını ne kadar eskiye götürülebiliriz? Bunlar heyecan verici sorular.

Göbekli Tepe is regarded as one of the oldest temples of the hu-
manity according to archaeologs. In this work, by going back twelve
thousand years, we will attempt both to provide information about
this structure and to make interpretations by highlighting the theolog-
ical and philosophical associations of this structure. In our study, we
will examine Göbekli Tepe not from the perspective of archaeology
and history of art but from that of philosophy of religion and religious
symbolism. In our research, we benefit from the data of archeology
and historical geography. The basic aim of this search is archaeological
data that is obtained in the region and to evaluate  these datas based
on the historical geography and the history of religions. When it is,
we have interpreted according to language of religion and religious
symbolism. As a result, contrary to popular belief, we saw important
reasons Göbekli Tepe area that is sacred structures, the people of the
Stone Age is not primitive and faith is as old as humanity. We have
reached the conclusion that must be rethought the development of human civilization on the Göebekli Tepe Temples.  Our main objective is
to connect Göbekli Tepe with philosophical and theological literature
and to propose a method and subject as to how to accomplish this.
Thus, our study is just an attempt at interpretation.

Acest mit al paradisului poate fi privit ca un reflex cultural generat de schimbările de paradigme sociale. Ca urmare a trecerii umanităţii de la stadiul de societate de indivizi vânători-culegători la cea sedentară a agricultorilor civilizaţia umană a început să se raporteze altfel la natură, ajungând să o conştientizeze mai profund. De asemenea conştientizând mediul înconjurător mai intens şi-a dat seama de propriile limitări, cunoscându-se astfel şi pe sine mai bine. "Apoi Domnul Dumnezeu a sădit o grădină in Eden (..)a făcut să răsară dm pămînt tot felul de pomi plăcuţi la vedere şi buni la mîncare şi pomul Vieţii în mijlocul grădinii şi pomul cunoşinţei binelui şi răului" 1 . "...ei (n.p. oamenii) aveau din belşug fructele din pomi, şi din tot restul naturii, fructe crescute nu prin agricultură, ci pentru că pămîntul le dădea de la sine" 2 .

This paper is a comparison of the Urfa Man figure and a  Female figure from Sardinia that has a similar appearance. Despite the differences in the male and female figures size, geographic location, and time periods their underlying cosmological themes are similar. The figures were interpreted through the ancient depicted sign language system.

Despite the limestone's poor condition. It was thought worthwile to attempt a translation as a means of illustrating how ancient cultures used the depiction of spirit essences to create phrases related to their cosmology. In the paper this mini "T" shape pillar was mistakenly attributed to Gobekli Tepe.

İnsanlar varsayımları dinlemek yerine, ayrıntılı sorular yöneltiyor ve yönelttiği sorularına kesin cevaplar istiyor. Kültür-turizmi işlerinin profesyonel düzeyde ele alınacağının, fonların idaresinin akılcı şekilde yapılacağının işaretleri de devletin en üstünden makamlarından gelmeye başladı.

DİN ARKEOLOJİSİ BAĞLAMINDA HARRAN VE ÇEVRESİ
Tarih boyunca insanlar sayısız kentler kurmuş, ancak bunların bir kısmı tarihsel süreç içerisinde yok olurken bazıları günümüze kadar ulaşmayı başarmıştır. Kuşkusuz bu şehirlerden bir tanesi de Şanlıurfa’dır. İlk tarım faaliyetlerine ev sahipliği yapan Karacadağ’dan Nevali Çori’ye, dünyanın bilinen ilk üniversitelerinden biri olan Harran Okulu’ndan Edessa’ya birçok hazineye sahip olan bu bölge; din arkeolojisi açısından da oldukça zengin bir mirasa sahiptir. Günümüzde, İbrahim peygamber ile özdeşleşen Urfa’nın dünyanın bilinen en eski devasa yapıdaki rituel alanlarına sahip olması, aslında dinler tarihi açısından süpriz değildir. Mircea Eliade’nin de haklı olarak belirttiği gibi kutsal her defasında yeniden tezahür etmektedir. Uzak geçmişte kendisini Göbekli Tepe ile ortaya koyan kutsal, daha sonraları İbrahim peygamber, Harraniler, Sabiiler ve diğer birçok dini geleneğe ev sahipliği yapmış olan Urfa günümüzde de insanların dini amaçlarla ziyaret ettikleri bir mekân olmayı sürdürmektedir. Urfa ve çevresi birçok yönden olduğu gibi din arkeolojisi açısından da incelenmeyi haketmektedir. Antik inançlardan günümüz dünya dinlerine birçok inanç açısından izler taşıyan bu kentin, popüler yaklaşımların ötesinde akademik bir yaklaşımla ele alınması büyük bir önem arz etmektedir. Bu çalışmada günümüz Şanlıurfa sınırları içerisinde yer alan ve din arkeolojisi disiplininin çalışma sahasına giren konular ele alınarak, Şanlıurfa’nın bugün sahip olduğu zengin mirasın anlaşılmasına katkı sağlanması amaçlanmaktadır. Kuşkusuz böyle bir çalışmanın başarılı olması arkeoloji ile dinler tarihinin birlikteliğiyle ortaya çıkacak olan disiplinlerarası bir yaklaşım ile mümkün olabilir.
