De tweede periode is zijn tijd bij De Bezige Bij-dat maakt de scheiding tussen wat eerder en later kwam absoluut. Maar bovenal is Schröder een oeuvrebouwer geworden, met een stapel van inmiddels zo'n veertien romans (het eerdere werk meegerekend), waarvan er vier een opvallend sterke samenhang vertonen. In een proloog ('Wat vooraf gaat') wordt, in 1984, een zesjarige jongen in zijn droom bezocht door een figuur die zegt zijn latere ik te zijn. In deel 1 (gesitueerd in 1999) worden de belangrijkste personen van het verhaal geïntroduceerd, van wie Etzel Aksma de spil is. Het dorp E*** waarin hij woont krijgt twee nieuwe bewoners die een oude directeurswoning betrekken. Ze blijken broer en zus te zijn, Gundula en Balder Ingelant. De zus is een rijzige elegante gestalte die buitenshuis steevast door haar twee honden wordt vergezeld. Balder is een geschiedenisstudent aan de universiteit, die zich altijd zelfverzekerd in regenjas in het dorp vertoont. Tussen Balder Ingelant en Etzel Aksma ontwikkelt zich een verborgen jaloezie, en naar Gundula koestert Etzel een heimelijk verlangen, dat belemmerd wordt door een onoverkoombaar ontzag. Etzel zet een discotheek op in een oude lijnwerkplaats, die nog allerlei spoorlijnen en treinwagons om zich heen herbergt. Dit wordt een ontmoetingsplaats voor de jeugd rond E*** en de naburige grotere stad H***. Er worden veel hallucinerende trips ondernomen, die een centrale rol in het verhaal gaan vervullen, omdat deze de personages naar ongeziene verten meenemen. Maar niet alleen de trips. Ook het zogenoemde Elzenbos leidt tot hallucinerende vergezichten, waarin lang vergeten figuren de nog levende soortgenoten adviseren, bespelen en verwarren. De trips leiden uiteindelijk tot de dood van Ingelant, die in een lege vuilnistrein wordt gegooid en op een vuilnisbelt de dood vindt. Of toch niet? Na omzwervingen komt hij na een bezoek aan een oude wijze kater terecht bij een vreemd wezen:

This paper traces the links between the cultures of the Dogon, Igbo and Beta Israel, mythologically tied to the Sirius star system and all emerging from Nubia and ancient pre-dynastic Egypt. Their spiritual purposes are reflected in the Egyptian teachings, to bring Heaven and Earth together. We may think of it today as balancing the divine and human elements of our being in a cooperative, harmonious expression of love and light-both within us and with those around us .

The priestly origins of these groups ultimately trace back to the oldest astronomically aligned structure yet discovered anywhere on Earth, the astro-ceremonial site of Nabta Playa. Established in the Stone Age in what is now the western Egyptian Sahara desert, it is likely situated in what the Igbo of Nigeria consider their first cradleland.

Africa's astronomical heritage is not locked in silent stones; it exists in still-living and exceedingly rich, pre-scientific myths of the constellations, tools for expressing hidden knowledge and power. By using ancient stellar symbolism, claims of heavenly authority can be substantiated. The actions of the direct heirs appear in line with the ancient Egyptian tenet of linked dualities.
The Dogon of Mali and the Igbo of Nigeria present their knowledge overtly but coded in the form of dramatic masked dance rituals. The Beta Israel of Ethiopia covertly and at odds with Old Testament biblical narrative, screen their Sirius ritual with Torah liturgy.

Note: The author focuses on tracing the Sirius star system for continuity in writing this paper, but is aware that the placement of Nabta Playa menhirs were set to track other star systems movements and helical risings as well. Details can be found in Thomas Brophy's, The Origin Map.

Inanna, Aya and Ninlil; goddesses of the Sirius star Imprint number 38 This imprint pictures a sexual intercourse of sun god Utu with Inanna, a goddess of the Sirius star. On the right stands the moon god Suen dressed in a woollen skirt. This trio: the moon god, the sun god and the Sirius goddess are pictured on many cylinder seals. In this paper I examine some of them. Around 2000 B.C. the Sirius star and the sun were in conjunction from about half April until about half June: rising and setting at the same time: "Egyptians based their calendar on the heliacal rising of Sirius, namely the day it becomes visible just before sunrise after moving far enough away from the glare of the Sun. This occurred just before the annual flooding of the Nile and the summer solstice, after a 70-day absence from the skies. Sirius was identified with the great goddess Isis, while the 70-day period symbolized the passing of Isis and Osiris through the duat (Egyptian underworld)". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirius This meant that for 70 days Sirius and the sun formed a couple. In the next verse the conjunction of Sirius with the sun is described as Inanna riding together with her brother, the sun god Utu:

Göbekli Tepe is the site of a series of stone enclosures built during the tenth and ninth millennia BC on an isolated mountaintop in southeast Anatolia (Turkish Asia Minor). Speculation has mounted regarding their orientation towards stellar objects, with Orion and Cygnus having already been proposed. Sirius is the latest star to be put forward as the primary focus of key monuments at the site. Yet such a conclusion is thwart with problems, not only in connection with the faint appearance and feeble movement of the star during the epoch in question, c. 9500-9000 BC, but also with respect to the orientation and layout of the enclosures themselves. Instead of being orientated to the south, the direction of Sirius, the enclosures are more likely directed to the north, the direction of liminal activities since the Upper Paleolithic age. In this respect, a more suitable stellar candidate for the orientation of the enclosures is Deneb, the brightest star in Cygnus, which marks the opening of the Milky Way's Dark Rift, seen universally in the past as an entrance to the sky-world.

During archaeological excavations at the Keava hill fort, 137 artefacts and approximately 1680 potsherds were recovered from the area of 88 m 2. Most of the recovered artefacts belong to types, which were used during the 11th-13th centuries. In the deeper layers of excavation area I, pottery fragments dating to the Viking Age were found. A spearhead found earlier in the hill fort belongs to the 11th century. All of the other artefacts that can be dated with reasonable certainty belong to the late 12th century or the first quarter of the 13th century. Finds from Keava are ample but also typical of the Estonian Final Iron Age hill forts (e.g. Varbola, Soontagana and Lõhavere). The assemblage is mainly composed of ornaments, personal belongings, metal parts of clothing, scrap metal and bronze work residues. 1

Known to the ancients as Khenu, the ancient site of Gebel el Silsila is divided into east and west by the Nile at its narrowest point, and is foremost famous for its many New Kingdom stelai, cenotaphs and Speos of Horemheb. Located between Kom Ombo and Edfu, it features ancient Egypt's largest series of sandstone quarries running for approximately 2.5-3 km2 on both sides of the Nile, presenting evidence of extraction methods and transportation techniques, a wide variety of graffiti including hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic, Greek and Latin inscriptions, petroglyphs and elaborated pictorial representations: carved and painted commemorations dating from Prehistory and throughout all subsequent ancient periods.

Written in a journalistic format, the book/report covers the first 10 expeditions carried out in the Theban Mountains (Wadi’s el Sikkat, el Taqa. el Zeide, Gabbanat el Qirud & Wadi el Gharby) by Dr John Ward & Dr Maria Nilsson as part of the ongoing projects under The Sirius Project.

The expeditions cover the Southern Wadis of the West bank of Luxor and follow in the footsteps of Howard Carter and other early pioneers who against all odds managed to survey and gather evidence of early human habitation and interference in the wadis. Since those early expeditions, the wadis have remained relatively quiet with very few archaeological expeditions being carried out in the vicinity.
The team have been able to catalogue, record and document various inscriptions from a plethora of periods not to mention archaeological remains and artifacts which litter the ancient pathways in the wadis. A large majority of the inscriptions have already been recorded and documented by other expeditions carried out there other the years. However the team has been fortunate in discovering many new inscriptions as yet undocumented and recorded and has also surveyed and recorded the ancient pathways with their signs of human interference and basic structures which line the routes.
Establishing times lines and verifying existing theories and shedding new light on the migration of early man as he took shelter within the wadis and their associated plateaus. The team has also been able to catalogue many flint implements which litter the current Paleolithic and Neolithic stations on and around the plateaus.  Again following in the footsteps of the early pioneers such as Pitt-Rivers and Proff Hall.

Although long recognised as one of the most influential trades in medieval society, this is the first book to offer a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the London mercers from the twelfth to the sixteenth century. The variety of mercery goods (linen, silk, worsted and small manufactured items including what is now called haberdashery) gave the mercers of London an edge over all competitors. The sources and production of all these commodities is traced throughout the period covered. It was as the major importers and distributors of linen in England that London mercers were able to take control of the Merchant Adventurers and the export of English cloth to the Low Countries. The development of the Adventurers' Company and its domination by London mercers is described from its first privileges of 1296 to after the fall of Antwerp. This book investigates the earliest itinerant mercers and the artisans who made and sold mercery goods (such as the silkwomen of London, so often mercers' wives), and their origins in counties like Norfolk, the source of linen and worsted. These diverse traders were united by the neighbourhood of the London Mercery on Cheapside and by their need for the privileges of the Freedom of London. Extensive use of Netherlandish and French sources puts the London Mercery into the context of European Trade, and literary texts add a more personal image of the merchant and his preoccupation with his social status which rose from that of the despised pedlar to the advisor of princes. After a slow start, the Mercer's Company came to include some of the wealthiest and most powerful men of London and administer a wide range of charitable estates such as that of Richard Whittington. How they survived the vicissitudes inflicted by the wars and religious changes of the sixteenth century concludes this fascinating and wide-ranging study.

As the premier livery company, the Mercers Company in medieval England enjoyed a prominent role in London's governance and exercised much influence over England's overseas trade and political interests. Proving a comprehensive edition of the surviving Mercers' accounts from 1347 to 1464, this substantial two-volume set opens a unique window onto the day-to-day workings of one of England's most powerful institutions at the height of its influence.The accounts list income, derived from fees for apprentices and for entry to the livery, from fines (whose cause is usually given, sometimes with many details), from gifts and bequests, from property rents, and from occasional other sources, and then list expenditures, on salaries to priests and chaplains, to the beadle, the rent-collector, and to scribes and scriveners; on alms payments; on quit-rents due on their properties; on repairs to properties; and, on a whole host of other costs, differing from year to year, and including court cases, special furnishings for the chapel or Hall, negotiations over trade with Burgundy, transport costs, funeral costs or those for attendance at state occasions, etc. Included also in some years are ordinances, deeds and other material of which they wanted to ensure a record was kept. Beginning with an early account for 1347-48, and the company's ordinances of that year, the project then provides the entire block of accounts from 1390 until 1464.The material is arranged in facing-page format, with a faithful transcription of the original document mirrored by a modern English translation. A substantial introduction puts the material into its contexts and explains the accounting system used by the Mercers and the financial vocabulary associated with it. Exhaustive name and subject indexes ensure that the complete project is accessible and will become an essential tool for all studying the social, cultural or economic development of late-medieval England.

Sirius, the brightest star visible in the sky, has many myths and legends associated with it. It lie in the constellation of Canis Major, the Great Dog. It is almost in line with the 3 stars making up the Belt of Orion. Sirius owes its apparent pre-eminence to the fact that it is one of our nearest stellar neighbors.

ABSTRACT
Mainstream naval history debate focuses on the Western tradition. A study of Ancient Egyptian sea power provides a useful contrast; Egypt being amongst the first civilizations to employ sea power, and a civilization formed with little outside influence. The abundant well preserved evidence of the Egyptian civilization remaining today also contributes to Egypt’s value as a case study. The book outlines a series of firsts for sea power that the Egyptian navy set a precedent for. It was the first to conduct ‘joint’ operations, first to use manoeuvre as a maritime warfare approach, first to conduct maritime power projection operations in foreign lands, first to blockade an enemy stronghold and first to conduct amphibious operations.

This book outlines the applicability of sea power during the formation of the Egyptian state, its central government and state building processes. The earliest Egyptian boats were rafts made from papyrus reeds used by hunter/gatherer groups. During the Neolithic period (approx. 5500 BCE) wooden boats were developed. In the Predynastic period (3700 to 3050 BEC) ceremonial boats and war-canoes were also used. The peak of ancient Egyptian warship design was during the reign of Rameses III. These ships were 25m long and 4.5m wide. They had loose-footed sails, 17 oarsmen a side and a lookout post on the mast-head. Naval organisation, titles, roles and terminology developed also; in similar ways to the West. However, unlike Western navies, a distinction was never made between the army and navy. Officers would often command both in their careers within a single Egyptian military.

Egyptian maritime forces were used to support diplomacy and land operations, to protect commerce and conduct constabulary operations. This versatility of naval activities is a major attribute of modern navies. These naval activities were also key factors in the formation of the Egyptian state by unifying the Minoan, Mycenian and other Eastern Mediterranean cultures. It was the resultant Egyptian state that built an organised Egyptian navy and solidified its role in Egyptian life.
