Begleittext zur Ausstellung "übersehen - Kunst in der DDR" (Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin), die im Rahmen des Seminars von Prof. Dr. Katja Bernhardt ("Kunst in der DDR" - WiSe 2018/2019) stattfand (04.06. - 12.07.2019) - in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Kunstarchiv Beeskow.

This book focuses on one of East Germany's most successful artists as a point of entry into the vibrant art world of the "other" Germany. In the 1980s, Bernhard Heisig (1925-2011) was praised on both sides of the Berlin Wall for his neo-expressionist style and his commitment to German history and art. Chancellor Helmut Kohl chose him to paint his official portrait, major museums collected his work, and in 1989 he had a major solo exhibition in West Germany. After unification, Heisig was a focal point in the Bilderstreit, a virulent debate over what role East German art should play in the new Germany. Challenging current understandings of Heisig and East German art, this book focuses on Heisig's little-known fight for modern art in East Germany. Examining major debates of the 1960s, it shows the key role he played in expanding the country's art from the limits of Soviet-style socialist realism to a socialist modernism that later gained recognition in the West.

This essay examines the debates around colour in East German architecture from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s. It traces the gradual relinquishing of the attempt to determine principles for the colouring of socialist architecture based on an idealised conception of socialist society as inducing “joy in life” (Lebensfreude). The relationship to prewar avant garde thinking is examined as problematic, but nonetheless present in the 1960s reconceptions. In the 1970s, colour was discussed not so much as reflecting “joyfulness”, but as a means of generating “pleasure” in residential areas. Colour was no longer to serve a projected abstract notion of the condition of socialism, but to relate to the everyday experiences of residents in housing estates and, indeed, to improve these experiences through the “emotional impact” of colour. In the closing phase of the GDR, residents of prefabricated architecture began to introduce their own colours to their
loggias, upsetting the predefined colour schemes. By the 1980s, differentiated manifestations of colour in GDR architecture arguably reflected the societal order of the closing years of the Republic—conflicted and fragmented.

Note: 1,0 Einleitung Die künstlerisch produzierten Bilder über den Alltag in der DDR unter den Machtverhältnissen der SED-Diktatur haben die heute gängigen Vorstellungen über sie entscheidend geprägt. Gerade die unverwechselbaren Ästhetiken von DEFA-Spielfilmen trugen zur Distribution einer phänotypischen Bildwelt dessen bei, was man sich einst als Sozialismus dachte. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie das Repräsentationssystem DEFA-Kino als (eine staatlich monopolisierte) Technologie des Geschlechts 1 operiert und in den 1950 und 60er Jahren Körper-und Geschlechterbilder produzierte, die ein, sich von westlichen Entwürfen unterscheidendes, Geschlechterbildgedächtnis der deutschen Teilung nach 1945 generieren. Sie interessiert sich darüber hinaus für die in der deutschen Teilung entwickelte kulturelle Ost/West-Alterität und ihre symbolischen Vergeschlechtlichungen. 2 Die Untersuchung geht davon aus, dass im kulturellen Diskurs verschiedener Identitätspolitiken die Verhandlung von Körper, Sexualität und Geschlecht eine zentrale Rolle einnimmt. Diese fungieren als Territorien, Markierungen und Reproduzenten der Mythen der Nation und politischer Utopien: Geschlechterbeziehungen stehen sowohl im Zentrum kultureller Bilder gesellschaftlicher Identitäten und Gruppen als auch im Mittelpunkt der meisten kulturellen Konflikte und Auseinandersetzungen. 3 Für die Modellierung von nationaler Identität ist der Komplex Körper-Geschlecht-Generativität gegenüber anderen Symbolsystemen wegen seiner epistemischen Verwandtschaft der beiden zentralen Figuren des Nationalcharakters und des Geschlechtscharakters von herausragender Bedeutung. 4 Vor diesem Hintergrund werden die Fiktionalisierungen von Köper und Geschlecht in DEFA-Spielfilmen als Aktanten nationaler Identitätsstiftung unter den politischen Machtverhältnissen in der DDR kenntlich gemacht. Dabei befindet sich die Geschlechterperformance des Neuen Menschen als liminaler Verhandlungsort von nationalkultureller Kontinuität und politischer Normierungspraxis im Mittelpunkt der Filmanalysen. Das DEFA-Kino wird als kulturelles Repräsentationssystem verstanden, das sexuelle Differenz und die Heteronormativität der symbolischen Ordnung (re)produziert. Kapitel 1 | Gender, Körper und Nation 1.1 Gender im Alteritätsdiskurs der deutschen Teilung Untersuchungsmaterial für westliche Projektionen einer ostdeutschen Kultur liefert die Bildpublizistik der deutschen Wiedervereinigung. Dort werden kulturelle Distinktionen und Leitdifferenzen zwischen Ost und West ganz selbstverständlich über Körper-und Geschlechterbilder ausgetragen: within the discourse of unification the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was often caricatured with female images, characterized by naiveté, dependency, and weakness, whereas the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) was depicted as strong, male, and aggressive. 7 In den Bildern eines wilden und natürlichen Ostens nährte der Westen sein Selbstbild einer überlegenen Zivilisation: In der Zone hatten sich die Menschen eine unverdorbene Natürlichkeit bewahrt und eine ungebrochene Beziehung zur Körperlichkeit 8 gepflegt, die angeblich keine sexuellen Tabus gekannt hatte. 9 Im Zentrum der westlichen Phantasien fand sich die Ost-Frau mit einem ihr zugeschriebenen natürlichen und exotischen Sexualcharakter 10 : Als die DDR-Frau sich nach 1990 rasch zur Ostfrau wandelte, glich ihr Bild einer postfeministischen Männerphantasie: In der Freikörperkultur hatte sie den unbefangenen Umgang mit dem eigenen Körper und im reizarmen DDR-Alltag die vollen Genüsse des Sex erlernt. 11 Die sexuelle Semantik setzte sich auch in der Bildpublizistik der Wiedervereinigung als Ehelichung eines heterosexuellen Paares durch, die jene Mischung aus Andersartigkeit und Einigkeit, aus Fremdheit und Zusammengehörigkeit, aus heftigem Begehren und alltäglicher Gemeinsamkeit, die auch auf den nationalen Vereinigungsprozess zwischen Euphorie, Ernüchterung und Selbstverständlichkeit zutrafen 12 , symbolisierte. Die Paarmetaphorik verweise auf eine Vergeschlechtlichung in den Deutungen der deutsch-deutschen Einheit, so Ina Dietzsch. 13 Im Ehebild bekam die DDR (Osten) stets den weiblichen Part zugewiesen, die BRD (Westen) den männlichen. Während die Bildpublizistik in der frühen Nachkriegsgeschichte beiden Teilstaaten noch als Brüder 14 darstellte, gingen alle Analogien des Vereini-7 . S.16. 4 gungsprozesses (...) von einem Ungleichgewicht zwischen beiden Teilen aus. 15 In der symbolischen Repräsentationsfigur eines weiblichen Ostens bediente man sich tradierter hegemonialkultureller Leitdifferenzen, denn der westeuropäischen Kulturtheorie des Ostens sind hierarchische Muster struktureller Ungleichheit implizit, so der Ethnologe Peter Niedermüller. 16 Die kulturelle Ostgrenze verlaufe dort, wo die Idee des zivilisierten, fortgeschrittenen und hoch entwickelten Westeuropa mit der Konzeption des zurückgebliebenen, unzivilisierten und barbarischen Osteuropa kontrastiere. 17 In das Klassifikationssystem Ost/West sind Hierarchien tief eingeschrieben und die Definitionsmacht über das, was als östlich gilt, liegt im Westen. 18 Die distinktiven Kodes mit denen sich der Westen den Osten bis heute konstruiert stammen dabei aus der Mottenkiste kulturevolutionärer Differenztheorien des 19.Jahrhunderts: Unizivilisierte Wildheit und Natur trifft auf bürgerliche Zivilisation und Kultur. In diesem Zusammenhang wurde der/die/das fremde ostdeutsche Gegenüber bildsemantisch kollektiv verweiblicht (effeminiert) und als wilde und natürliche Ost-Frau in einer heterosexuellen Ehe zivilisiert und versorgt. 19 Als weiblich markiert kam für die DDR nur die Verlierer-Rolle im historischen Prozess in Frage: Mit dem Verlust der staatpolitischen Souveränität verlor die DDR ihre Unabhängigkeit, ihre Modernität wurde in Frage gestellt, ihre Geschichte gleichsam entwertet. 20 Die Geschlechtermetaphorik der deutschen Vereinigung habe den Umgang mit den Ostdeutschen nach 1990 mit bestimmt, so Dietzsch. 21 1.2 Ideale Weiblichkeit und Natur der Frau Im Anschluss stellt sich die Frage, wie der Repräsentationszusammenhang zwischen einer DDR als Frau und Verliererin zustande kam und welche Deutungsmöglichkeiten sich darüber hinaus eröffnen? Die Rolle der ostdeutschen Frauen als Verliererinnen der Einheit 22 ist breit erforscht und einhellig beurteilt worden: Sie waren überproportional häufig von Arbeitslosigkeit, beruflicher Dis-15 7 zulassen. Im Folgenden soll es um Körper-und Geschlechterbilder in ausgewählten DEFA-Filmen gehen, mit denen die Identität der nationalen Gemeinschaft der DDR entworfen wurde. Kapitel 2 | Forschungsstand, Desiderata, Erkenntnisinteresse 2.1 DEFA-Film-Forschung Die DEFA-Filmforschung umfasst bis dato englischsprachige Forschungsarbeiten 44 aus dem Umfeld der Cultural Studies und einen breitgefächerten deutsch-deutschen Forschungsdiskurs 45 , um dessen Förderung sich insbesondere die DEFA-Stiftung verdient gemacht hat. 46 Es dominieren filmund medienwissenschaftliche Aufsätze, Monographien und Sammelbände, die sich zumeist mit Produktionskontexten von DEFA-Filmen beschäftigen. 47 Beliebte Untersuchungsobjekte sind weiterhin politische Ikonographien und Mythengestaltung 48 , Leit-und Feindbilder 49 , Jugendbilder 50 oder die Thematisierungen von Arbeits-und Alltagswelt 51 , Heimat 52 und Zukunft 53 vor dem Hintergrund der deutschen Teilung. Diese zumeist sozialhistorische Operationalisierung wird durch ideengeschichtlich motivierte Analysen der Ästhetiken und Inszenierungspraxen der symbolischen Ordnung ergänzt. 54 Die Zensurproblematik findet sich verstärkt im Zusammenhang mit der Rezeption der verbotenen, aus dem künstlerischen Kanon ausgeschlossenen, DEFA-Spielfilme der 1960er Jahre. 55 Die Genderthematik ist nach 1990 vornehmlich als berufliche und sexuelle Emanzipation von Frauen untersucht worden. 56 Dabei ging es häufig um den Wandel von Frauenbildern und gesellschaftskritische Aspekte des DEFA-Frauenfilms. 57 Sowie um die Darstellung sozial-, frauen-und geschlechterpolitischer Initiativen durch Filme. 58 Aufgrund der starken Präsenz von Frauenfiguren kursiert in der Filmforschung auch die These einer Entmaskulinisierung des DEFA-Kinos und einer Fe-

This essay examines cultural attitudes to Nietzsche in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), which appeared to be changing in the mid- to late 1980s, after almost forty years of deliberate, officially sanctioned neglect of the thinker.
Nietzsche's voice had been effectively silenced in the GDR and his manuscripts carefully guarded. While it was not impossible to gain access to Nietzsche's manuscripts, scholars had to tackle a bureaucratic assault course in order to reach them. Reception of Nietzsche in the GDR tended to be limited and negative. There was nothing even resembling an open discussion in the GDR of Nietzsche and his legacies before 1986, and the first Nietzsche monograph to be published there did not appear until 1989. Discussions of Nietzsche in the GDR were rare, and they tended to focus only on his alleged role in paving the way for National Socialism and/or bourgeois imperialism.
The depth and intensity of official hostility to Nietzsche in the GDR can be traced, in part, to the founding ideas and self-understanding of that state. Its claims to legitimacy were based on two closely related ideas. The first was a Marxist-Leninist interpretation of historical development, according to which the GDR was the culmination of progressive ('zukunftsweisend') developments in German history. The second was the antifascist struggle of 1933-1945, which provided the GDR with its immediate raison d’être. The presence of the victorious Red Army on German soil, the sacrifices of the Soviet people in repelling the fascist invader, and the martyrdom of German antifascists in the Third Reich appeared to provide compelling evidence for both these claims to legitimacy. There was no room for Nietzsche in the ‘first antifascist state on German soil’, as his writings were perceived (and not only by communists) to have been an important underpinning of National Socialism.
A debate in 1986-87 in the GDR journal *Sinn und Form* on opening up Nietzsche's work to public debate seemed to be part of a cultural thaw in East Germany. This debate in the GDR was a curiously muted and oblique version of a process which, by 1987, was already well underway in Mikhail Gorbachev's Soviet Union: glasnost. In the event, in the GDR context it was too little, too late.

The author proposes post-imperial analysis as a new research agenda for the study of (post-)GDR literature and painting. The article models this kind of analysis with respect to works by the authors listed in the title, focusing on the representation/destruction of the Soviet tank as an object embodying imperial sovereignty. More specifically, the author explores a series of scopic scenarios that dramatize the confrontation with Soviet tanks, drawing on Carl Schmitt's 1950s concept of iconographic space for its political theory and tracing the genealogy of this iconographic object, its constitution as aesthetic object, in the work of Soviet artists. Reading the (textual and visual) demolition of the tank as post-imperial gesture, the article studies strategies that either destroy aesthetic conventions or explode the object through a process of de-scription.

My chapter focuses on the migratory journey of Hanns Eisler. I discuss how shifts in his compositional approaches reveal a musical turning away from nationalism in search of more internationalist idioms on the one hand, and a recourse to traditional Austro-German forms on the other. I argue that this seemingly paradoxical confrontation with the national manifests itself as a dialectical engagement. For example, as a migrant, Eisler re-focused his employment of certain compositional avant-garde idioms, notably that of the Schoenberg School.

Unlike most of his contemporaries, Eisler was displaced twice, falling victim to McCarthyism in the immediate postwar era. This second migratory journey saw Eisler re-emerge into the limelight of music history as composer of the national anthem of the GDR. He now confronted the national very directly, composing a national anthem and actively participating in the creation of new German folksongs for a new Germany. And yet, the socialist promise of the new nation, which resounds in Eisler’s music, ultimately disappointed his search for utopia. Even in East Berlin, Eisler thus confronted the national from a place of heterotopia.

In observing Eisler’s compositional strategies in the heterotopia of mobility, I highlight how, paradoxically, migration acted as a catalyst for a dialectic engagement with nationalism and, in the process, undermines nationalist historiographical approaches to understanding his musics fixated on place.

The article sets out to investigate the fundamental problem for the methodology of postwar German art history, namely, the unavoidable fusion of two markedly different perspectives, i.e., those of East and West Germany, into a coherent narrative. The reconstruction of key exhibitions and controversies sparked by East German art, in 1989 and beyond, suggests that the revision of the canon of art history may be faced with greater challenges whenever adopting the perspective of the close Other (political or ideological), rather than that of a remote Other (ethnic or cultural). The incorporation of the close Other into a uniform narrative on art history can be a moot point, most notably in those cases where the western concept of art calls for a necessary restatement, and one's identity needs to be critically redefined in the process. This is best exemplified by what happened in Germany after 1989.

Der Beitrag widmet sich der Darstellung mentaler und körperlicher Einschränkungen bei Gabriele Stötzer und Cornelia Schleime. Gefragt wird, inwiefern der jenseits von Body Art auch für andere künstlerische Artikulationen bezeichnende Einsatz des Körpers als Material und Werkzeug bis hin zur (inszenierten) Entsagung als Kritik und Überwindung der Reglementierungen künstlerischer Praxis in der DDR gelesen werden kann. In der Analyse ausgewählter Foto/Performances und literarischer Texte wird nachgewiesen, dass die Betonung der Repression, der eingeschränkten Mobilität und Kommunikation bei Stötzer und Schleime weit über die metaphorische Wiederholung patriarchaler und realsozialistischer Unterdrückungsmechanismen hinausgeht. Es handelt sich dabei um Formen der kritischen Aneignung und Wendung bekannter Motive, die bei beiden Künstlerinnen zur Ausbildung eines auf Souveränität, Vitalität und Ironie gründenden subjektiven Blicks führen.

Palast der Republik, by the photographer Christoph Rokitta, is an independent photobook published in 2013 in Berlin. In Palast der Republik different semiotic resources interact with one another, in order to reveal a new experience about the demolition process of the homonymous building. In opposition to the trivial notion of icon as sign that stands for its object in a relation of similarity, we are going to analyze the book as an icon whose main feature is the possibility of discovering new information about its object through its manipulation. This specific feature is called operation criteria of iconicity. Our aim is to describe and analyze the relations between semiotic resources in this photobook, by exploring not only the operational criterion of iconicity, but also the roles of diagrams in reasoning, and how models function models as epistemic artifacts. Therefore, it will be presented here how semiotic resources with different morphological features in the photobook interact in order to create a diagrammatic epistemic artifact of its object: the demolition of the Palast der Republik.

Der Wettlauf ins All, das sogenannte Space Race, war vom ersten künstlichen Satelliten im Orbit 1957 bis zum ersten Mann auf dem Mond 1969 ein zentraler Kampfplatz des Kalten Krieges. Im Falle der Sowjetunion verband sich die Eroberung des Weltraums mit dem Glauben an die Überlegenheit des Sozialismus und den Aufbau einer neuen, " besseren " Gesellschaft. Auch in der DDR wurden die Errungenschaften der Sowjetunion auf diesem Gebiet rezipiert und später durch technische Zuarbeit (insbesondere des VEB Carl Zeiss Jena) und personelle Zusammenarbeit aktiv unterstützt. Im Zentrum des Dissertationsprojekts steht die in der DDR in unterschiedlichen Medien inszenierte künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit der Eroberung des Weltraums, zum Bei-spiel auf Wandbildern, Gemälden, Plakaten, Postkarten oder Briefmarken. Dieses zentrale Thema der DDR-Fortschrittspropagierung ist bisher noch nicht systematisch erfasst und aufgearbeitet worden. Untersucht wird das Wechselverhältnis von Utopie, Imagination und Realität in den Raumfahrtbildern, ihre Rolle als Bestandteil politischer Ikonographie sowie die Frage nach Herrschafts-und Technikdiskursen, die sich in den Bildern und Bild-motiven manifestieren. Ziel des Dissertationsvorhabens ist zum einen die Lokalisierung und systematische Aufar-beitung der DDR-Kunstproduktion mit Raumfahrtbezug in verschiedenen Kunstgattungen und zum anderen die Untersuchung ihres historischen und symbolischen Gehalts. Gleich-zeitig sollen die Raumfahrtbilder nicht nur als Propagandamittel im Kalten Krieg verstanden werden, sondern Einblick in eine Zeit technischen und technisierten Umbruchs gewähren und somit zur Moderne-Forschung beitragen. Es gilt, die Raumfahrtbilder der DDR zu his-torisieren und in Bezug zu setzen zu Weltraum-und Raumfahrtvorstellungen seit der Frü-hen Neuzeit und zu politischen, kulturellen sowie sozialen Entwicklungen in der DDR. Da-rüber hinaus soll auch die zeitgleiche künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit Raumfahrt in anderen Staaten nicht außer Acht gelassen werden.

This paper discusses the Exhibition Project and Research Process Up Till Now – Reconsidering historical performance and actionist Art from the former German Democratic Republic (8th March - 26th May 2013, Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig, Germany).
Up Till Now was particularly interested in experimenting with different curatorial strategies, which help to initiate and enable an updated reception of historic performative works. By questioning the relationship between performance and its documentation or ‘mediatization’ (video, photo, oral narratives, texts, scores, requisites etcetera), the curatorial team questioned what it meant to work with these artefacts today, and to stage this documentary material. How could artistic approaches, which denied importance of ‘the object’, be shown in an appropriate way? Moreover, questions around the archive arose: who works with what material, who gets access, how is/was the material contextualized, and what is put on show or not?

Im Jahr des Mauerbaus drehte Jürgen Böttcher in Dresden die DEFA-Dokumentation Drei von vielen. Sie erzählt von drei Freunden – einem LKW-Fahrer, einem Chemigraph sowie einem Steinmetz –, die in ihrer Freizeit malen, zeichnen und bildhauern. Ein Trio, wie es nicht besser das Bitterfelder Ideal verkörpern könnte. Doch statt heroischem Arbeiterpathos sieht man junge Künstler, die jenseits des sozialistischen Ideals nach individuellen Lebensformen à la Bohème suchen. Gleich einem Atelierrundgang möchte die Tagung nach dem Raum, nach den Funktionen und nach den Topoi des Ateliers in der DDR fragen. Dieses wird als espace autre verstanden, in dem Gespräche über den kreativen Prozeß geführt wurden, wo man sowohl dem Klassenfeind als auch der Stasi begegnete, das als sozialistischer Lehrraum diente, in dem sich der Staat und seine Künstler inszenierten, Drei von vielen produktiv waren und wo man alternativ im Kollektiv arbeitete. Zugleich gilt es zu untersuchen, inwieweit die alternativen Formate der künstlerischen Praxis in der DDR der späten 1980er Jahre als elementarer Beitrag zu einer sich wandelnden, „anderen“ kulturellen Identität und zu einem „Dritten Weg“ verstanden werden können. Von diesen Prämissen ausgehend, diskutieren ausgewiesene Experten sowie Nachwuchswissenschaftler das Atelier als eine réalité, die die Kunstgeschichte der DDR in all ihren Modi und Ästhetiken, Ambivalenzen und Brüchen widerspiegelt.

This article looks at the impact that East Germany’s gender policies had on the visual arts and especially women painters across four decades. The first two sections focus on women’s participation in the national art exhibitions in Dresden during the Ulbricht and Honecker years, looking at how their artwork responded to official gender policies, and at the emergence of three women—Heidrun Hegewald, Gudrun Brüne, and Doris Ziegler—as nationally prominent painters. The third section focuses on the paintings and agitations of Angela Hampel in the 1980s as an example of a new phase in the pursuit of gender equality in East Germany, one abruptly cut short by the unification process. Ultimately this article argues that East Germany’s gender policies, despite not having achieved the stated goal of true equality, had a positive impact on women artists, and especially painters, in East Germany, increasing the number of women included in major exhibitions, encouraging greater complexity in their work, and ultimately fostering a socialist-feminist critique of lingering patriarchal biases.

The car is one of the few luxury items that historically is widely accepted in Germany, the land of “discreet consumption.” This contribution draws on social science research, includes writings on popular culture, and presents examples from people and their cars in the media that give evidence of how luxury is increasingly emotionally charged, enriched, and negotiated. Cars were status symbols in Germany as a divided nation, with people in West Germany driving a Mercedes and people in the East driving a Trabant. Today, German rappers praise their “sick” cars, and paradox 'Bio-Germans' shield their luxury body in an expensive SUV. These examples illustrate luxury consumption that aesthetically and narratively links identities to cultural heritage. The media discourse reflects the symbolic and also the increasingly affective nature of luxury, while healthy “luxury” bodies remain in a competition for limited resources in a social context.

Il tema - molto dibattuto fra gli anni Settanta e Ottanta del secolo scorso - di uno sviluppo autonomo della lingua tedesca nella DDR è diventato, dopo la Wiedervereinigung, una questione puramente accademica relativa alla storia della Germania nel XX secolo. Ciononostante esso merita di essere ricordato come un interessante esempio di "adeguamento" linguistico motivato da necessità politiche e sociali del quale si sono occupati (e continuano a occuparsi) molti linguisti tedeschi e non. Al di là delle difficoltà comunicative create dal DDR-Wortschatz per quanto attiene alla semantica, uno dei più evidenti ostacoli alla comprensione dei testi prodotti nella Germania orientale durante gli anni della divisione è posto dall'uso preponderante di sigle, acronimi e altre forme di abbreviazione. Un Abkürzungsfimmel che è conseguenza diretta di un'altra propensione dei burocrati: quella a creare Komposita e sintagmi lessicali sempre più lunghi. Alcuni di questi Kurzwörter erano conosciuti anche al di fuori dei confini nazionali, altri erano ovvi per i soli parlanti orientali, alcuni rappresentavano un problema per gli stessi DDR-Bürger e altri ancora sono riscontrabili prevalentemente nei linguaggi specialistici, nonché nelle migliaia di "documenti riservati" presenti negli archivi della SED, della Stasi, ecc. ai quali si è avuto accesso solo dopo la caduta del Muro di Berlino.

This chapter focuses on the series of murals Heisig created for the Hotel Deutschland in Leipzig in 1965. The murals became the centre of an intense debate shortly after they were finished, one of several between artists and GDR cultural functionaries. The primary disagreement revolved around a proper definition of socialist realism, which was left purposefully vague by the party. An investigation of these murals and the controversy surrounding them demonstrates that East German cultural politics were more complex than is currently thought and provides a deeper understanding of how Cold War-era thinking impacts current scholarship about East German art.

L’Association internationale d’histoire économique (International Economic History Association - IEHA) est née à la fin des années 1950 et a organisé à partir de 1960 une série d’importantes conférences internationales. Celles-ci réunirent des historiens venus de l’Europe entière, par-delà les divisions du « rideau de fer ». Bien qu’internationale, l’organisation a été créée et dirigée par des Européens. Les pays d’Europe de l’Est participèrent eux aussi dès l’origine à l’organisation des conférences de l’association, l’Union soviétique les y ayant autorisé au titre des « échanges scientifiques ».
En RDA, l’intégration de l’histoire de l’économie au sein de l’association eut une importance capitale dans l’affirmation internationale de cette discipline par le biais de son « Nestor », Jürgen Kuczynski (1904-1997). Il décidait seul quels historiens d’Allemagne de l’Est auraient accès aux événements internationaux. Il fut lui-même très actif dès le début des conférences internationales et siégea au comité de l’IEHA jusqu’à l’âge de 82 ans.
Pour les scientifiques est-allemands, encouragés par les autorités dans cette démarche, la participation à l’Association internationale entraînait de facto une reconnaissance du caractère scientifique de leurs méthodes et travaux, au même titre que ceux des universitaires d’Europe de l’Ouest ou d’URSS. La participation aux congrès et aux comités avait une importance particulière pour les universitaires de la RDA, car, au sein de l’Association, les chercheurs est-allemands pouvaient participer à la circulation d’idées en Europe. Le développement d’un véritable espace public transnational nécessite l’existence de débats contradictoires, au-delà de la simple opposition idéologique. Dans le contexte de la Guerre froide, les liens interpersonnels entre les membres de l’association purent ainsi contribuer à la pérennité de ces débats.

Diese haben Historiker aus ganz Europa, der Teilung durch den „Eisernen Vorhangs“ zum Trotz, versammelt. Obwohl der Verband offiziell international war, wurde diese Organisation von Europa bzw. von Europäern eingerichtet. Die sozialistischen osteuropäischen Länder nahmen an der Gestaltung der Veranstaltungen von Anfang an Teil, denn die Sowjetunion hatte es im Rahmen der „wissenschaftlichen Austausche“ erlaubt.
In der DDR hatte die Integration des Faches Wirtschaftsgeschichte in diesen Verband eine entscheidende Bedeutung für die Behauptung dieses Faches und dies mit Hilfe von seinem „Nestor“, Jürgen Kuczynski (1904-1997). Er entschied allerdings allein, wer von den ostdeutschen Historikern an den internationalen Veranstaltungen teilnehmen dürfen würde. Er war auch selbst in der Organisation der Konferenzen vom Anfang an tätig und war bis zu dem Alter von 82 Jahre Mitglied des Beirats der IEHA.
Die ostdeutschen Behörden haben die Wissenschaftler der DDR ermuntert, dem Verband anzugehören. Es war für sie die Gelegenheit ihre Forschungsarbeiten und Forschungsmethoden de facto wissenschaftlich zu untermauern, indem sie diese denen der westlichen und sowjetischen Akademiker gegenüberstellen. Die Teilnahme an den Kongressen und Beiräten war auch für die ostdeutschen Akademiker wichtig, weil sie einen Bestanteil der intellektuellen Eigendynamik in Europa sein könnten. Die Bildung einer echten transnationalen Öffentlichkeit kann nur entstehen, wenn ein wissenschaftliches Streitgespräch – unabhängig von den ideologischen Widersprüchen – möglich ist. Im Kontext des Kalten Krieges haben die im Rahmen des Verbandes gebildeten zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen bei der Fortdauer der innereuropäischen Debatte mitgewirkt.

This article focuses on Heidrun Hegewald, one of East Germany's best-known female artists. Known in particular for drawings, prints, and paintings of women and children that often raised unsettling questions about family life or global issues, Hegewald received many awards for her work in East Germany. Since unification, however, she has largely disappeared from the art scene, the result of her double marginality as a woman and an East German. This article focuses on a handful of her paintings and their reception in East Germany in order to show the importance of her work for the study of both East German art and women artists more generally. In particular, it examines the theme of the family as it appears in her paintings and how she used this theme, and especially mothers and children, as a lens from which to discuss political issues important to East Germany on both a national and global scale.

The essay deals with the role played by Gabriele Mucchi (1899-2002) in the context of the cultural relations between Italy and the German Democratic Republic in the 1950s, thus before the two states established diplomatic ties and bilateral agreements. A realist painter and communist activist, Mucchi was a key figure in the artistic debate of the GDR, where Italian “Realismo” played a key-role within the process of self-determination of a German and socialist art. Following a growing
interest towards his work, the GDR authorities invited him as guest professor to the Art Academy in East Berlin, where he took up residence and lived throughout his life, albeit alternating with stays in Italy. On the basis of unpublished archive sources and press reviews, the article highlights the premises and the early stages of Mucchi’s art writing, teaching and exhibiting activity in East Germany, shedding light on his status as an example of cross-border partnership across divided Europe and as a significant case study for the cultural Cold War.

How many good ideas are needed to rehabilitate unused buildings? How many positively-intentioned investors are necessary to reactivate spaces with no clearly visible potentials? What if the buildings have an unpleasant political past?
The buildings of the LPGs (Agricultural Production Cooperatives) of the former German Democratic Republic stand nowadays in the landscape as silent
memorials to a failed economic utopia. This paper focuses on presenting the former production buildings of the LPGs and discusses their role as heritage and their uncertain future. After a short introduction of the historical moment and a presentation of the reasons why they were built, the building typologies will be briefly introduced. The paper will conclude with a presentation of some of the ideas developed after a semester of research and work with bachelor architecture students of the Design Studio at the Technical University of Berlin.

My dissertation, “‘Drawing for me means communication’: Anke Feuchtenberger and German Art Comics after 1989,” investigates the art of East German graphic artist Anke Feuchtenberger, one of the most important individuals and teachers working in German comics today. Trained during the GDR’s most experimental decade of artistic production, Feuchtenberger brought elements of the East German avant-garde, traditional printmaking techniques, the legacy of German expressionism, and politics of German unification to bear on art comics after 1989. She thereby pushed German graphic novels into a new realm, redefining the medium in cultural, political and aesthetic terms. My dissertation analyzes the content and visual language of her work as it engaged the politics of unification and transnational discourses on feminism, reflects the aesthetic legacy of the East German avant-garde and contributed to the development of an independent German art comics scene.
Chapter One provides historical contexts for the dissertation’s investigation, outlining the history of German comics and the process of East Germany’s adoption of German expressionism into official aesthetic policy before examining the sources of Feuchtenberger’s German expressionist visual rhetoric. Integrating the influence of Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly’s RAW magazine (1980-1991) as an important factor in the development of Feuchtenberger aesthetics, I explore how her expressionist visual rhetoric connects a number of art historical periods, including early twentieth century expressionism, East German neo-expressionism and poster art, and the visual language of American alternative comics.
Chapter Two situates Feuchtenberger’s comics within the politics of German unification to investigate how her activism and her poster work for the East German Women’s Movement informed the content, atmosphere and aesthetics of the her graphic art between 1989 and 1995.
Chapter Three applies the previous chapter’s understanding of Feuchtenberger’s feminist politics to a formal analysis of her comics and their intertexts. I identify the visual, verbal and narratological language that she engages in Mutterkuchen (1995) as part of a project to develop a feminine form of graphic expression that undermines patriarchal master narratives formally and in terms of content.
Chapter Four examines Feuchtenberger and Katrin de Vries’s Hure H triology as it deconstructs the cultural nexus of the whore figure through an abstracted and highly symbolic representation of female experience. The analysis focuses on how Feuchtenberger engages commonly occurring literary and rhetorical tropes to draw out a more potent understanding of female sexuality, one that is defined by the agency of the women themselves, that differs in every individual, and that is in conversation with Camille Paglia’s Sexual Personae (1990).
My conclusion considers the larger impact of Feuchtenberger, investigating her role in contemporary German comics as both a practitioner and teacher. As one of the most prevalent artists working in graphic art after 1989, who contributed fundamentally to the forming of a German comics avant-garde by developing a new visual and narratological grammar of political art comics, I argue that the history of German comics – and specifically the graphic art of this artist – is an important and heretofore underestimated chapter in the larger art history of united Germany.

Visual media played a crucial role on nearly all levels of everyday private and public life in the GDR. This essay intends to readjust the focus on GDR visual history by investigating its margins, including ephemeral and semi-official film archives beyond the “official” state-controlled production of images. It does not reexamine such ephemeral cinematic remnants as historical sources but rather as traces that have to be understood in context and appropriated, arranged, and re-read, assembling them as fragments of the past. The specific focus here is on the works of Thomas Heise, a filmmaker who—although prohibited from producing and publicly releasing films during the existence of the GDR—managed to create during that time various audio and visual artifacts as contributions to archives for the future.

We do research in various archives and in conversations with lesbian contemporary witnesses, because we are interested in how lesbians in the former GDR experienced being lesbian back then; their (survival) life strategies, political and cultural activities. What did they fight for?

In this chapter I explore how the  ‘borscht-western’ “Blutsbrüder” (1975) reflects dreams of a new ideal of nudism and tribal phantasies (common in the 1960s and 1970s), the utopian visions of a healthier and simpler socialism, while maintaining the “clean” and “proper” aesthetics between the sexes, prescribed by the 1968 Party Congress.
I focus on the symbolism of the brown-faced DEFA-Indianer as othered, racialized, sexualized and gendered bodies, representing similarity and difference to appeal to the spectators in the GDR. Here I am mainly concerned with the triadic mutual attraction of the white American deserter Harmonika (played by the GDR rock star and heartthrob Dean Reed from the United States), the Native American maiden Rehkitz (Gisela Freudenberg) and her brother, the warrior Harter Felsen (played by sex symbol Gojko Mitić from Serbia). In this context, I examine when this Eastern counter-western is appropriating generic Hollywood tropes and when it is “writing back,” changing and reversing familiar western plot patterns.

The German Democratic Republic undertook mass surveillance of its
citizens during the period 1950–1989 undertaken by its secret police
service, which took the form of documents, audio recordings, moving
footage, and approximately two million photographs. In late 1989 and
early 1990, citizens of the GDR stormed the offices of the Ministry
for State Security, commonly known as the Stasi, following a series of
revolutions that shook Eastern Europe, marking the end of the postwar
era and the division of Germany. Citizens occupied offices in
Berlin, Leipzig, and other locations in order to halt the destruction of
files by staff officials under orders to erase traces of its unlawful state
surveillance actions. The regime is known for the precise rendering
of its nation’s citizens in observational reports and photographic
recordings and this article considers the ways in which photography
was utilized by the surveillance regime to infiltrate everyday lives.
Further, the article examines in what ways these photographs reveal
various surveillance techniques and indicate its limits in what can be
considered as inadequate or illegible photographs. Lastly, it considers
the remedial possibilities of the Stasi archive and its afterlife, or
extra-archival legacy via artistic mediation.

Beginning with an overview of painting in East Germany, this article examines the German-German Bilderstreit (image battle) of the long 1990s and two major art exhibitions in the new millenium, Kunst in der DDR (Art in the GDR, 2003) and Abschied von Ikarus (Farewell to Icarus, 2012-13). It ultimately argues that the history of East German art has been rewritten since unification in ways that reflect Western expectations and desires more than socialist realities, and shows how art historians, scholars of the German Democratic Republic (GDR, or East Germany), and those seeking alternatives to the neoliberal present can benefit from a less biased view.

In 1997, the summer before Johannes Bauer formed the band on this CD, I saw him perform in various contexts around Berlin: At Kulturhaus Peter Edel’s final concert, with Peter Brötzmann and drummer Shoji Hano, with his older brother Conrad in their two-bone/two-guitar group DoppelMoppel, with trumpeter Axel Dörner and a post-rock guitarist in a hole-in-the-wall called Anorak, and with his similarly East-Berlin-edgy guitar-horn band Slawterhaus...
But this CD is most redolent with another gig I caught that summer, one itself redolent with East German as much as Bauer’s own personal history in the music. It was a trio with his younger brother Matthias on bass and British drummer Mark Sanders, at East Berlin’s oldest continuously operating jazz club, the Jazzkeller at Parkhaus Treptow...

[English version below] Das Lindenau-Museum Altenburg bewahrt den weltweit größten Werkbestand von Gerhard Altenbourg (1926-1989) und fühlt sich der Pflege seines Werkes in besonderer Weise verpflichtet.
Zum 25. Todestag von Gerhard Altenbourg widmete das Lindenau-Museum dem Künstler eine umfassende Schau mit Arbeiten aus allen Schaffensphasen und in allen Techniken: Bleistift- und Kohlezeichnungen, dunkle, aber auch leuchtende Aquarelle, farbenfrohe wie zurückhaltende Mischtechniken, lichte Lithographien, subtile Holzschnitte, zum Teil kombiniert mit den dazu gehörigen Druckstöcken, zarte Radierungen und Künstlerbücher.
In der Ausstellung traten neben Arbeiten aus dem Museumsbestand und dem von der Stiftung Gerhard Altenbourg betreuten Nachlass zahlreiche Werke aus Privatbesitz, die sonst den Augen der Öffentlichkeit verborgen sind. So bot die Schau mit fast 120 Werken einen spannenden und vielseitigen Querschnitt durch das landschaftliche Œuvre eines der bedeutendsten deutschen Künstler der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, der noch immer viele Überraschungen und Entdeckungen bereit hält.
Bleistiftzeichnungen von Bäumen und eine Lithographie mit einer Landschaft stehen Ende der 1940er Jahre am Beginn von Altenbourgs künstlerischem Schaffen; Landschaften machen einen großen Teil seines Œuvres – neben den Figurenszenen und Köpfen – aus.
Altenbourgs Landschaften sind auch „Seelenlandschaften“: Hügel und Täler, Bergzüge und Flüsse, Bäume – vor allem die geliebte Pappel – und Gesträuch sind eingebunden in das Gewebe der Linien, Striche und Farben. Der Blick des Künstlers gilt nicht allein dem Sichtbaren in der Landschaft. Er macht sie sichtbar bis in das Geflecht des Wurzelwerkes hinab, bis in die geologischen Schichtungen und Schnitte.
Oft sind Figuren in die Landschaft eingebettet oder es entstehen „Kopf-Landschaften“.
„Altenbourgs Revier“ war die Umgebung von Altenburg, das thüringische Hügelland, das sich für ihn aber auch mit Gestalten der griechischen Mythologie verband: Artemis-Land und Pan-Wiesen oder „Wald minotaurisch“, wie es in einem Gedicht im Künstlerbuch In den Hebrosfluß hinab aus dem Jahr 1963 heißt.
The Lindenau Museum in Altenburg preserves the world's largest collection of works by Gerhard Altenbourg (1926-1989) and is particularly committed to the cultivation of his oeuvre.
On the 25th anniversary of Gerhard Altenbourg's death, the Lindenau Museum dedicated a comprehensive show to the artist with works from all creative phases and in all techniques: Pencil and charcoal drawings, dark but also luminous watercolours, colourful as well as restrained mixed media, light lithographs, subtle woodcuts, some combined with the corresponding printing blocks, delicate etchings and artists' books.
In the exhibition, works from the museum's holdings and the estate cared for by the Gerhard Altenbourg Foundation were joined by numerous privately owned works that are otherwise hidden from the eyes of the public. Thus, with almost 120 works, the show offered an exciting and varied cross-section of the landscape œuvre of one of the most important German artists of the second half of the 20th century, who still holds many surprises and discoveries in store.

Altenbourg's landscapes are also "soul landscapes": Hills and valleys, mountain ranges and rivers, trees – especially the beloved poplar – and shrubbery are integrated into the fabric of lines, strokes and colours. The artist's gaze is not only directed at what is visible in the landscape. He makes it visible down to the weave of the root system, down to the geological stratifications and cuts.
Figures are often embedded in the landscape or "head landscapes" are created.
"Altenbourg's stomping ground" was the surroundings of Altenburg, the Thuringian hill country, but for him it was also associated with figures from Greek mythology: Land of the goddess Artemis and meadows of the god Pan or "forest minotauric", as it says in a poem in the artist's book „In den Hebrosfluss” hinab from 1963.
