Cognitive Philology

"This special issue of Comparative Literature Studies brings together talks, some extensively revised, others virtually unchanged, that were delivered at a conference entitled "What is Philology?" The gathering took place on Saturday, March 19, 1988 at Harvard University under the aegis of the Center for Literary and Cultural Studies. The depth and breadth of interest in the conference was deeply gratifying. I had not experienced another occasion when so many scholars from different language and literature departments gathered at Harvard, and I hope that publishing the proceedings will benefit a larger community outside the University.

By way of introduction I will describe how the event originated. My description will explore a few of the reasons why an interdisciplinary conference of a dozen speakers and respondents attracted an audience of more than two hundred, and why a topic that 'may sound rarefied drew participants whose main fields of research and teaching interests ran the gamut from the most ancient Indo-European languages to the most recent African American literature. In short, I will offer tentative explanations for the urgency of the topic to students, professors, and independent scholars who engage in philology, linguistics, literary history, literary criticism, and literary theory."

Nell'ambito delle teorie e dei metodi di tipo comunicativo, si sono andate sviluppando delle tendenze che considerano lo studio del lessico focale nella prassi didattica e che, nell'insieme, sono riconducibili a quello che viene definito "approccio lessicale" (si veda almeno Lewis 1993 e, in relazione alla didattica, Nation 2001; per gli sviluppi più recenti Lo Cascio 2012):

Il contributo sviluppa una riflessione su quei particolari stati di coscienza che identifichiamo come ‘estasi mistiche’ e sulle caratteristiche che, secondo gli studiosi, esse hanno in comune con la condizione propria dell’ispirazione poetica. Una digressione sulla scienza della coscienza evidenzia come sotto la definizione di ‘stati alterati di coscienza’ si raccolga un insieme eterogeneo di fenomeni nei quali rientrano quelli estatici e mistici. Sia nelle pratiche estatiche che nella creazione poetica la ripetizione di certi suoni o parole sembra essere un elemento importantissimo per il raggiungimento di una specifica disposizione mentale ed emotiva. Attraverso lo studio dei testi è possibile incrementare la conoscenza e la comprensione di tali meccanismi: in questo modo la ricerca filologico letteraria apporta nuovi strumenti e sensibilità ad una scienza che sta ampliando i propri metodi di investigazione.

The analytic assessment of the vv. 247-398 from Chrétien de Troyes’ Chevalier de la Charrette makes it possible to show that the description of the natural and social environment is proportional to the description of opportunity for actions required by the novel for the development of its main themes. Accordingly, the ecology of the medieval verse novel revolves around the knight and his courtly ethos and emerges from descriptive systems which are based on current social and cultural models. Such remarks leads to an idea of ‘realism’ which allows to explain why so-called ‘fantastic adventure novels’ and so-called ‘polyphonic social novels’ have been part of the very same literary system throughout the whole history of the genre.

Major theorical studies approached the crucial subject of mimesis focusing on the relationship between literature and reality, maintaining that novels imitate reality through language, translate facts and events into semiotic acts or they establish consistent fictional worlds intersecting the so called actual or ‘real’ one. The present account maintains a different point of view, introducing an ecological theory of narrative reference. According with J. J. Gibson’s Theory of Affordances and recent findings in the field of neuroscience, stories are addressed as being understood on the basis of individual action-related knowledge. A case study about the Chevalier de la Charrette by Chrétien de Troyes will show how medieval verse romances textually encode actions.  Narrative descriptions of sensory experiences and interoceptive responses, such as emotion, feelings, thoughts, deductions or decisions, are tightly connected, and to some extent dependent on description of previous or ensuing actions. The impact of an ecological theory of narrative description on philological investigation concerning storytelling is also discussed.

La concepcion oral de la lirica medieval nos permite plantear nuevas hipotesis mediante la comparacion entre repertorios liricos contemporaneos con distintas lenguas y con diferentes sistemas metricos y ritmicos. La musica es el elemento comun que permite la comparacion y, por tanto, se impone una consideracion plurilinguistica y, por tanto, intersistemica. El elemento melodico es susceptible de ser interpretado como portador de significado mediante analisis intertextuales e intermelodicos. Plurilinguismo, intermelodicidad e imitacion intersistemica.

What is the relationship between time, the philological truth (or the "true text") and canonical works, such as the Bible? Is textual truth related to time, space and culture, and how? And does the digital dimension open new scenarios in this millenarian struggle? In this paper I explore the theological bias of philological methodologies, which far from being neutral instruments in the hands of textual scholars have shaped, and often manipulated, the history of the transmission of our cultural heritage.

The present study capitalizes on recent advances in neurophysiology concerning the involvement of the sensory-motor system in language recognition and understanding during reading and listening so as to explain the various roles played by negation in novelistic descriptions since the medieval origins of the genre. Textual evidence from a famous medieval verse novel, Chrétien de Troyes’ Chevalier de la Charrette, demonstrates that negation does not simply complicate the processing of a given description. Indeed, negative descriptions can be completely understood only if fully integrated in a complex context which entails the conceptual representation of the negated state of affairs.

This work is a pilot study that used neurometric indexes during the listening of selected pieces of Dante's "Divina Commedia" in 20 participants. Half of them had a literary formation (Humanist; university students of literature) while the other half of is attending other university courses (Not Humanist). The study applied the electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms variations, the heart rate (HR) and galvanic skin response (GSR) during the listening of the excerpts. The neurometric indexes here employed were the Approach Withdrawal (AW), the Cerebral Effort (CE) and the Emotional indexes (EI). Results for the comparisons of the estimated AW, CE and EI related to the perception of the canticas showed as the Humanist group reported higher AW and EI values when compared to the Not Humanist sample (p < 0.03 and p < 0.01, respectively). Results suggest that the perception of the aesthetic experience is significantly modulated by the previous specific knowledge experienced by the participants. Finally, results of this kind of research could find application in the implementation of software and devices based on symbiotic relation with the perspective reader or listener of a literature opera, in order to personalize and maximize the fruition of them.

Finita da tempo la polemica anticrociana sui generi letterari, circa la loro utilita, quantomeno come «comode etichette» (Gianfranco Contini li definiva cosi), ormai non si fa piu questione. Viene anzi da ripensare al Curtius, quando scriveva che «senza uno schema formale ... il poeta non puo comporre» e individuava gli ‚schemi‛ nei generi letterari o nelle forme metriche e strofiche: essi, pur seguendo la legge del ‚rendimento decrescente‛, costituiscono un fattore di stabilita 1 . Tuttavia la metafora utilizzata dallo stesso Curtius del «giardino delle forme letterarie», nel quale fioriscono i generi dichiarati irreali dal Croce («per forzata coerenza col suo sistema filosofico»), le forme metriche o strofiche, le formule fisse, i motivi narrativi, gli artifizi linguistici2 mostra chiaramente quanto lontano fosse lo studioso tedesco dalla nozione di sistema e ci induce a riflettere su nozioni che possono anche apparire non passibili di sistematizzazione categoriale, aristotelico more, e ci induce vieppiu a rimeditare il problema della scelta degli elementi tassonomici, che, a questo punto, puo discriminare fra un approccio che potremmo definire ‚scientifico‛ e una visione impressionistica del fenomeno.

El presente trabajo parte de la convicción de que la filología y la musicología que estudian los textos y las melodías trovadorescas medievales deben tender a observar más allá de los textos y las melodías conservadas, e hipotetizar tanto sobre los textos como los contextos, a partir de una serie de preguntas que podemos plantear a los documentos conservados y a sus posibles respuestas, contrastando la información que de esas preguntas se desprenda con otros textos e informaciones de tipo histórico, arqueológico, iconográfico, etnográfico… ¿Qué hay de revelador en contextos desconocidos que nos permita reflexionar sobre los textos? En el año 2006 impartí una serie de lecciones en el marco del Seminario de Investigación dirigido por Jerusa Pires Ferreira en el Departamento de Comunicação e Semiótica de la Pontificia Universidade Católica De São Paulo (Brasil) y asistí a la exposición de una investigación realizada por Caroline Paschoal Sotilo y dirigida por la profesora Ferreira. La investigadora proponía una reflexión sobre los contextos que se evocan a partir de los márgenes invisibles pero existentes de las fotografías familiares. Cuando estas imágenes fotográficas son compartidas por sus protagonistas y/o familiares generan numerosos comentarios sobre personas no presentes, espacios o situacionies ajenas a la fotografía en cuestión. Todo ello supone una evocación de la memoria de lo ausente o de lo desaparecido, siempre a partir de esos contornos virtuales de la fotografía. Esa es la facultad de evocación de la imagen como fuente iconográfica y como "aide mémoire" del pasado de los individuos que no son conscientes de la información que alberga su cerebro hasta que una imagen conotativa despierta el recuerdo. Como afirmaba la investigadora se trataba de una "imagem multiplicada". Salvando distancias, creo que es necesario interrogar a los textos medievales pensando en esos contornos.

Novels (and Medieval Romances as well) typically (and necessarily) describe character-specific emotional responses to perceptual events or memories and emotional decisions which underly purposeful intentional actions. Accordingly, the study of emotions is crucial to the understanding of the integrated descriptive system that joins together perceptual events, emotional modulations and proper actions in a narrative whole which aims at working in the very same way the actual human experience of nature and society does. A study focusing on meaningful episodes of Chrétien de Troyes’ Chevalier de la Charrette (vv. 362-81; 1420-44; vv. 2732-39; 3047-54) aims at showing how recent advances in neuroscience make it possible to address novelistic descriptions of emotions in a way which contributes to explaining why novels are made the way they are and why the novelistic genre evolved into a global standard for storytelling.
