When fishermen go out to sea to catch fish, they are generally heavily burdened with fuel for the electric generator engine for lighting, boat propulsion engines and cooking utensils on fishing boats. In the ocean around the boat, there is abundant potential for solar energy, but it has not been used as a source of electrical energy for lighting and driving fishing boats to increase the productivity and economy of fishermen. If the energy is used properly, fishermen will get cheap, sustainable electrical energy and improve the welfare of fishermen. The purpose of the study was to test the performance of solar power generators on fishing boats as a cheap and sustainable energy source. The method used is assembling and installing components, testing the solar electric generator placed on the roof of the boat, then electricity which is partly used directly and partly stored in the accumulator to stabilize and supply energy to other electrical loads. This essay is an attempt to better understand the hydrodynamics behind flat-bottom
boat design. Boat length, stern design and bow design are the specifically addressed
aspects of the research question, “How does a change in hull design and dimensions
affect the velocity of a boat?”
With regards to Archimedes’ principle - when an object floats, it displaces a volume
of water equal to its own mass – three predictions were made. The first was that the
length overall of a boat affects its velocity such that a longer boat with more surface
area will have a higher velocity than one of smaller surface area but of the same
weight. The second and third predictions respectively, were that a bow and stern,
when more lateral to the water would achieve a higher velocity due to higher
buoyancy and a shape more incumbent to the plane of the water, allowing it to plane
over the water
The experiment was conducted in a modified water tank, using a motion sensor and
data logger. Five CAD models were designed, in accordance with the variables
mentioned above (Standard, long, short, bow and stern), and 3D printed. An
underwater motor was attached to the models’ hull undersides, and their velocities
were measured over a number of trials.
The results were graphed, and summarized, while taking uncertainties into account.
It was determined that the length vis-à-vis the surface area, affected the velocity as
predicted, until the increase in velocity could not overcome the water resistance on
the longest boat’s draft The bow prediction followed through, unlike the stern
prediction. The reason for the latter can be attributed to the stern changing the draft
of the boat and the angle of the motor. Finally possible systematic and random errors
were discussed, and ways of improving future experimentation were explained.

This project focused on Mechanical and Hydrodynamic design of Pedal operated
boat. Numerous preliminarily conceptual design were evaluated and among them we
have select the better one based on the best way of power transmission, cost, easy
ways of transportation and recreational value. Based on the selected preliminarily
conceptual working design concept the mechanical and hydrodynamic analysis is
done for each components. The Hull is designed for carrying of up-to four persons
and meta-center distance value were find by mathematical calculation using the
equation of Meta centric Radius; while the thrust force of the boat is FT = 520.12 N, which is evaluated by analytical methods. Eventually, our design analysis have
showed that pedal driven boat is feasible for up to four person as a result of that the
project is concluded with a conclusory consensus of pedal driven boat is safe and Ecofriendly way of providing thrust force for boats.

The only natural material for building boats is wood. There are various designs in the art of wooden boat building. The techniques for building wooden boats depends on the type of boat, the technique and procedure for making day sailors is different from the one used for construction of powerboats, cruising boats, or performance rows among several others.

This thesis describes the construction of two models of La Belle, a light frigate constructed in France during the late seventeenth century. The archaeological remains of La Belle are important as a unique example of a little understood vessel type and as an informative example of several construction techniques that were in use in the French shipyards at the end of the seventeenth century.


Using data recorded during the excavation and conservation of the original ship's timbers, historical documents, and contemporary drawings and models as guides, various configurations of La Belle's structure were created to determine her probable appearance. Whenever possible, the original materials and construction techniques were closely approximated to determine their effect on the overall appearance of the ship. Many of the artifacts excavated from the original vessel were reproduced in scale and incorporated into the model to determine their influence on the layout of the ship's structure.


The resulting model provides not only a picture of a specific ship type, but also, a glimpse into the technologies that existed at the time La Belle was constructed. The vessel may have been small in comparison to other naval vessels of the 17th century, but her contributions to our knowledge of shipbuilding and ship design are immense.

El presente ensayo ofrece una sistematización de un corpus de información etnográfica relativa a ciertos seres y objetos del agua entre los mayas chontales de Tabasco; se analiza la lógica por la que dichos seres se vinculan conceptualmente con los fenómenos de propiciación, reproducción o interconexión de las distintas clases de agua en la cosmología yokot’anob. En análisis se concentra en dos deidades -Ix Bolon y Yumpa’-, una serie de animales acuáticos mitológicamente emparentados -como el lagarto o cocodrilo, las tortugas hicotea y guao, y el pejelagarto-, así como un tipo de embarcación de uso tradicional en la navegación indígena regional: el cayuco, cuya agencia y animacidad derivan, desde la perspectiva chontal, del chapopote con el que se recubre durante su fabricación, atribuido a la deidad Ix Bolon.

This paper offers a systematization of a corpus of ethnographic information concerning certain water beings and objects among the Maya Chontal of Tabasco; it analyzes the logic and representations by which these beings are conceptually linked to the phenomena of propitiation, reproduction or interconnection of the different types of water in the Yokot'anob cosmology. The analysis is focused on two deities -Ix Bolon and Yumpa'-; a series of mythologically related aquatic animals -such as the alligator or crocodile, the Hicotea (Trachemys venusta) and Guao (Staurotypus triporcatus) turtles, and the pejelagarto (tropical gar)-, as well as a traditional canoe used in regional navigation: the cayuco, whose agency and animation are given by the chapopote-asphalt, which is dispensed by Ix Bolon.

In the present thesis, the principal types and classifications of composites have been introduced and the various possible constituents have been described. Furthermore, the benefits and demerits of composites have been discussed. Moreover, composites’ unique production methods have been summarized. Then, the main mechanics and design concepts have been shortly reviewed in order to form a basic background that can be used as a tool in composite structural design. After that, a review of the current composites applications in marine industry has been conducted for commercial, pleasure and naval fields, the review has been conducted on complete composite hull vessels and also on composite parts.
As a case study, the application of composites as an alternative material for marine steel hatch covers has been studied. Two separate approaches have been considered; “weight reduction approach” and “strengthening approach”. For both approaches finite element analysis (FEA) was performed using ANSYS software. Critical design parameters of the composite hatch cover and FEA are discussed in details. Regarding the weight reduction approach; steel hatch covers of a bulk carrier were replaced by composite covers and a weight reduction of 44.32 % was achieved leading to many benefits including fuel saving, Deadweight Increment and lower center of gravity of the vessel. For the strengthening approach; the foremost hatch cover was strengthened to withstand 150% of the load required by IACS for safer navigation while no change in weight was made between the steel and composite covers. Results show that both approaches are feasible and advantageous.

Model Kapal ini dapat mempermudah masyarakat dalam hal penyeberangan sungai dan danau. Model ini dapat menjadi acuan untuk pembangunan kapal penyeberangan di daerah-daerah yang memiliki sungai,. utamanya bagi masyarakat yang memiliki sepeda motor dan terkendala dalam proses penyeberangan, motor ini dapat dimanfaatkan untuk sumber tenaga penggerak dari model kapal ini. Hal lainnya, dapat pula kita jadikan sebagai usaha pembuatan kapal bagi daerah daerah yang membutuhkan.

The residual liquid biomass from agricultural and agroindustrial processes, in general
way, represents a renewable resource in significant amount, without an economically and
environmentally sustainable destination. For instance, the solution concerning glycerin stocks, remaining from the vegetable oil transesterification for obtaining biodiesel, has been postponed due to the lack of engineering alternatives appropriate to the proper utilization of this biomass. Therefore, the development of a liquid biomass gasification reactor based on partial oxidation has been initiated, where a non conventional combustion technology has been employed, Filtration Combustion, as a design basis for the reactor conception, in which the reference biomass used was glycerol. This work, eminently experimental, was carried out to build a gasification reactor prototype, in laboratory scale, in which its burner is completely filled by ceramic spheres of alumina (Al2O3), thus forming a inert porous matrix, which is partially immersed in glycerol at its bottom end and which involves a heat exchanger installed at the top of the reactor. The process is investigated to identify some key design features such as: reactor operation limit in terms of fuel-air mixtures; occurrence of instability phenomena; combustion wave propagation velocity; and influence of the main operation parameters, equivalence ratio, fuel consumption rate, and air and water flow rates into the reaction. Although all experimentation has been restricted to test the gasifier for the production of synthesis gas by partial oxidation method, theoretical investigation was broader, comprising the autothermal reforming. The experiments, supported by monitoring instruments and chromatographic analysis, were supported by a theoretical study based on a simplified analytical model, considering the global reaction of partial oxidation associated with water-gas shift reaction. Experimental results have demonstrated the feasibility of the process, providing operational stability over a wide range of equivalence ratio, and conversion efficiency (>20%) of glycerol to syngas, while maintaining energy extraction from reaction.

U.S. Coast Guard proposed a boat propeller safety rule for houseboats / house boats in 2001 known as USCG-2001-10163. USCG withdrew the proposed rule in 2007. This report analyzes that decision and points out multiple errors led to the proposal's rejection. Propeller Guards, propeller safety measures, houseboat propeller accidents, and houseboat propeller accident statistics are among the topics covered.

James Hornell in his historic work 'The Origins and Ethnological Significance of Indian Boat Designs' (1920) mentioned about Rampon - the boat type that form the identity of Goan fishermen. According to him these boats are found on the southern region of Konkan and dominate on the Goan coast and are mostly employed for beach seining (Hornell 1920: 21). Nothing more is mentioned by him and not much is known about these regional boats which are still been used along the coast of Goa but at the verge of decline. There is no established antiquity for these boat types. How they originated in the subcontinent, how they are constructed, who construct them and how they are technologically different from other regional boat types of Goa and what makes them unique to serve as a Goan identity.

This article is, thus, an attempt to investigate these regional craft of Goa locally called as Ramponchem Vode and present the results of the survey and recording. Emphasis is on the technology and its construction method. Comparison of these boat type is also been made with other regional craft types of Goa and its distribution pattern. This study, thus, is a humble attempt to throw more light on the construction method, usage of these regional boat types and to find out how it’s different from other boat types of Goa and their vital role in Goan society and culture.

In the process of designing a new kind of sailing craft that relies in part on a flat planing surface, explanations and mathematics could not be found that could explain the observations, most of the research [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] being more relevant to powered motorboats with chined hulls. The motion and physics of surf boards, kiteboards, and skimboards, the more obvious planing surfaces, seemed to fall outside of any research and were explained by casual observations and rules of thumb.
It was decided to develop a theoretical system that would predict the lift forces and Centre of Effort (CoE) of a planing surface in relation to Angle of Attack, area and velocity.
A number of interesting concepts were discovered that apply to the author's work. Other designers may benefit from these as well and wish to investigate them further or verify them with practical experiments.

Abstract: The classical Greek trireme has an aphlaston in a fishtail shape, an akrostolion in dorsal fin shape and eyes. What fish wants to be like? This study aims to identify the behavior of wood in the marine environment as well as its use in interior and exterior design of small cruise passenger ships. The cruise industry is among the most exciting and fast-growing categories in the leisure marketplace, especially ın Mediterranean region, so that is a need for constant improvement of services and passenger comfort. Although the wood as a building material has the most significant influence on interior design and furniture production, the material choice and building methods are first defined in the design-phase. This study is founded on actual experience during the refurbishment of the passenger ship Anna Maru during the spring of 2016 in Psaros shipyard in Perama, Greece. The beginning chapter is formed by bringing out the vessel characteristic, design essentials, design process and design methods, which facilitated the successful completion of full treatment. In add-on, also are mentioned problems of noise and vibrations, which requires monitoring of international standards, proper usage of materials and reduction of costs. The final chapter discusses the examples of practical usage and execution of traditional wood products such as tropical hardwood, combined with the contemporary composite materials, as well as finishing techniques.

A short ethnographic research on the boat community living on London's Regent's Canal near King's Cross (conducted March-April 2016). With particular focus on the boat community's tangible and intangible means of place-making, as well as their living conditions in relation to the urban development site nearby.

In the Cedynia-Gozdowice-Siekierki Region of National Remembrance (Gryfino county, Poland) a wreck of a military boat was discovered in 2015. The boat was identified as an element of light pontoon bridge park NLP, used by Red Army and Polish People’s Army during World War II. The boat sank in Odra (Oder) river, probably during the fights with Nazi German troops in 1945.

This paper is concerned with contrasting the impact of globalization pressures on industrial development in particular localities, with specific reference to the relative performance of regional clusters. A multiple case study approach is adopted in order to examine the decline of volume yacht manufacturing in a long-established English cluster and to compare its responses to globalization with those of major competitors located in other parts of Europe. The case study opens with an analysis of three sector-specific drivers of globalization that have exercised a decisive impact on the sector over the last three decades. In the main analytical section, two alternative approaches to the analysis of clusters (Porter 1990, 2000, Best 2001) are applied to the empirical material. The application of Porter’s ‘diamond’ framework suggests some distinctive performance-related characteristics, while Best’s ‘cluster dynamics’ model provides a more sophisticated explanation of the differential responses and outcomes identified in the English case. The implications for policy are that cluster-level outcomes may be predicated on the internal dynamics of their respective ‘entrepreneurial fïrms’, and that regional development initiatives would benefit from conceptual and empirical studies that can better address the historical and spatial complexity of the underlying processes.

The present paper is an attempt to study the traditional method of boat manufacturing techniques in Varanasi and to study the socio-economic condition of the boatman community in Banaras residing on the ghats from an ethno-archaeological approach. Varanasi is also known as Benaras, Banaras and Kashi. The city of Banaras now developed as a major pilgrimage centre of Hindus and a key destination for foreigners to search for the true soul of Indian culture. However, Banaras is incomplete without focusing the role of boatman, boat manufacturing technique and their cultural context. Boatman of Banaras plays an important role in introducing the city to its visitors. Although, traditionally the boatman community belongs to “Mallah” caste group, but this features is now diminishing, as different caste groups entering into this profession day by day. In this perspective, this paper ethno - archaeologically describes the traditional method of boat manufacturing techniques by the boatman at the ghats of Varanasi, their social structure, material culture and other aspects of boatman community. The major source of data for this paper has come from the fieldwork through personal interaction with the boat makers in Banaras by the authors and other sources like academic journals, books, research articles etc. The study concludes that despite their significant role in continuing the charm of Banaras, their livelihood is in poor state and need special care from government and private sectors.
