This article investigates the origins, significance and varied inflections of the figure of an angel in Renaissance representations of St Roch. Although presumed to derive from the saint’s biography—specifically, to depict his cure from bubonic plague by an angel—the exact relationship between text and image is more complex than one of straightforward narrative illustration. Textual priority cannot be assumed, as representations of the new saint preceded by nearly two decades the earliest extant biographies. Moreover, these early vite make no mention of angelic involvement in Roch’s healing. Rocketing to success as efficacious plague protector in the late-fifteenth century, Roch has been recently unmasked as a pious fiction. By interrogating the multiple reworkings of the angel—shown blessing, announcing or actively curing with the tools of contemporary medicine—the essay elucidates the processes of saint formation and the key role of visual imagery in shaping worshippers’ conception of the saint and the operation of his protective powers.

The essay argues for the origins of the theme in Venetian art, and identifies Andrea da Murano's St Vincent Ferrer altarpiece (c. 1477-79; Accademia, Venice) as perhaps the earliest extant version. Other works discussed include Bartolomeo Vivarini's triptych for S. Eufemia (1480), a watercolour probably by notary, lawyer and print collector Jacopo Rubieri, and altarpieces by Titian and Pordenone. Analysis of the extant lives of the saint suggests that the origins of the theme of Roch and the angel are likely visual rather than textual. Subsequent sections investigate modifications to the theme in Northern Renaissance art, where identification of the angel as Raphael, the “angelic doctor,” encouraged artists to represent him not simply blessing or pointing to the bubo, but actively ministering to the diseased saint, applying a healing salve or even taking up the surgical instruments of his earthly counterparts to lance Roch’s bubo. The final section of the essay highlights the continuing mutability of depictions of saint and angel in sixteenth century Italian art, where the grounded heavenly attendant is replaced by the angel aloft. Works analyzed include paintings by Lombard artists such as Vicenzo Civerchio and Titian's print of c. 1517 for the Scuola di San Rocco.

Santa Maria Gloriosa de’ Frari is one of the best-loved and most celebrated churches in Venice, renowned for its imposing Gothic architecture and its rich display of works of art, but it is in no sense a museum.  Founded as the principal church of the Conventual Franciscan order in Venice, the church has been the setting for ritual, sacred music, prayer and preaching ever since the Middle Ages.  This book presents the rich and varied history of the church in a new light.  This is neither a guide book nor a catalogue of the works of art.  Instead, it is the first true monograph on the Frari, whose role included charitable and educational functions as well as devotional life.  Spanning eight centuries, the book explores the lives of the friars, worshippers, local residents and artists, both within its walls and round about.  A profusion of new colour photographs offers the reader the chance to appreciate many details that have never before attracted attention.
The book considers the Frari in the context of the immediate neighbourhood and its local concerns and activities.  The present church was begun in 1328, and the Franciscans continued to occupy its spacious cloisters until the Napoleonic suppression in 1806, which led to their banishment for more than a century.  At this point, the church became the centre of a parish, incorporating the nearby areas of San Tomà and San Polo.  Meanwhile, Titian’s famous Assunta, one of the masterpieces of Venetian Renaissance painting, was removed from the high altar, to be displayed for nearly a hundred years in the galleries of the Accademia.  The altarpiece was not returned to the church until 1920, just two years before the return of the Franciscans. Remarkably, the complete list of the Franciscan guardians and parish priests survives back to 1241 and is included in the book. 
The twenty-three chapters guide the reader through this complex history, allowing a new appreciation of the works of art, whether familiar or little known, in terms of their meaning and devotional function.  The patronage of chapels by prominent families, and by immigrant communities such as the Milanese and Florentines, has enhanced the rich variety of painting and sculpture.  The role of women patrons is highlighted in several cases.  The book examines the importance of relics as the focus of local devotion, and explores the role of the local confraternities (scuole) in the ceremonial and music. 
An important aspect of the Frari was the commemoration of prominent individuals, whose tombs and monuments adorn the walls and floor of the church.  Doges, military leaders, bishops, artists, musicians and businessmen found their last resting place within its walls.  Because of its size and beauty, the church has played a major part in the lives of local residents, and the memorials enshrined within have inspired generations of Venetians and visitors alike.  This uniquely interdisciplinary book contains a wealth of new material and insights into this long and complex institutional history.

Giovanni Bellini (1435 ca.-1516) è unanimemente riconosciuto come il maggiore protagonista dell'arte veneziana fra Quattro e Cinquecento. La lezione si concentrerà monograficamente sulla produzione del maestro, da un lato, spiegando, attraverso la sua crescita, la successione degli stili nell'età dell'Umanesimo e, dall'altro, mettendone in luce la singolare coerenza di temperamento lungo circa sessant'anni di pittura.

The article presents the lecture notes from the first of three university courses on Venetian painting taught by Roberto Longhi at the University of Bologna (1945-1946). Preserved in typescript form in the library of the Department of Visual Arts in Bologna, the volume regards the same topics addressed in a concise, razor-sharp manner in Longhi’s contemporary Viatico per cinque secoli di pittura veneziana (1946), embracing a period of about two centuries, from the Trecento of Paolo Veneziano to the Quattrocento of Giovanni Bellini. Through its dissection of the most significant parts of these notes, the article casts light on their concordance with other celebrated essays by Longhi (especially his “Lettera pittorica” a Giuseppe Fiocco, Giudizio sul Duecento and Viatico), offering a response to thorny questions concerning fourteenth- and fifteenth-century Venetian painting left unresolved or unaddressed in Longhi’s text of 1946.

Lazzaro Bastiani distinguishes himself as one of the most interesting yet less considered fifteenth-century Venetian painters. Noted in San Lio since 1456, where he seems to have settled with his workshop, Lazzaro enjoyed widespread appreciation among his contemporaries, as demonstrated by the importance of commissions and documentary evidence. Nevertheless, scholarly focused on rival artistic families, such as those of Vivarini and Bellini, academics have not sufficiently stressed the importance of Bastiani’s course for the development of Venetian painting in the second half of the Quattrocento. This paper deals with a reexamination of the artist’s career from the seventh to the ninth decade of the fifteenth century, specifying some new aspects regarding style and chronology and discussing the relationship between some autographs pieces and bottega works, with particular attention to the reuse practice of the same cartoons for different oeuvres. As a result, archaisms and medieval legacy seem to confirm the workshop culture in which Bastiani’s painting arose.

The article expands the oeuvre of Lazzaro Bastiani (documented 1456–1512) with a Virgin and Child in the Art Gallery in Northampton, formerly erroneously ascribed to Quirizio da Murano. The attribution aims to go beyond a mere revision of authorship, seeking above all to trace a new early chronology of Bastiani’s career, stretching from the 1450s to 1480, with a focus on the later dating of works until now unjustly interpreted as solely retardataire, as for example the Virgin and Child with Angels in the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan and the polyptych in Matera. In this new context of chronology and style, the panel in Northampton can be dated to 1476/1478, coming after a period marked by the impact of Marco Zoppo and Giovanni Bellini and showing the artist finally open to the art of Alvise Vivarini.

After completion of plain lists for Bolognese painters, other issues remain, such as better indexing and intermediate locations. Before that, the present part refers to foreign aka “forestieri” painters active in Bologna. Paintings inserted here respect a necessary but not sufficient condition: the oldest location is in Bologna. When the relevant date is recent, such as 19th century, the painting appears here only if the author has substratum or personal story that may be consistent with a stay in Bologna: for instance Filippo da Verona, Maestro Pesellinesco di Liverpool, Maestro di San Vincenzo, Maestro del Tondo Greenville

Considering the Madonna with the Child by Bartolomeo Vivarini kept in the throne hall of Palazzo Colonna in Rome and examine this for the first time in its entirety, is a very delicate operation today due to the vast bibliography dedicated to the venetian artist. This tempera on wood, signed on the cartouche on the base - 1471 -, shows the artist's "sculptural" intentions to use colors to recreate refined compositions of Venetian gold carpentry, present in other works by him. Until now little considered by critics, the panel brings to light new reflections on the use of gold, which in this case are no longer veterans of the International Gothic but new ideas for perspective and light in two-dimensional works: gold is not only synonymous with the Holy Spirit and Celestial Glory but becomes a technical tool and material that gives shape to the figures.

Il saggio anticipa un più ampio studio dal titolo "Antonio Vivarini, Giovanni Bellini e le forme dell’Umanesimo" in corso di stampa nel prossimo dossier della rivista «Humanistica». Nell’ambito della ricostruzione degli ultimi anni di attività di Antonio Vivarini, l’articolo aggiunge al catalogo dell’artista un Angelo annunciante, già posseduto dalla Matthiesen Gallery di Londra come opera del più giovane fratello Bartolomeo. Sulla base della lettura stilistica e delle fonti, se ne propone, da un lato, l’associazione con una Vergine annunciata di ubicazione sconosciuta e con i Santi Giovanni Battista e Agostino delle Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia e, dall’altro, l’appartenenza al polittico per la Scuola piccola di San Girolamo a Cannaregio, con una datazione fra il 1460 e il 1464.

Questo contributo mira a rintracciare alcune delle possibili declinazioni del modello monografico tradizionale per lo studio del percorso biografico e figurativo di un pittore della seconda metà del Quattrocento veneto troppo spesso dimenticato come Lazzaro Bastiani (doc. 1456-1512). In presenza di un unico, datato tentativo di chiarimento dell’intera vicenda del maestro (l’articolo del 1939 di Licia Collobi Ragghianti su ‘Critica d’Arte’), si rende innanzitutto necessaria una ricognizione delle inesattezze interpretative e delle aporie metodologiche messe in campo dagli studi parcellizzati (singole attribuzioni, schede di catalogo ecc...) o da quelli contenuti entro un più ampio e globale disegno di ricerca storico-artistica (opere di carattere generale sulla pittura veneziana), per illustrare uno schema alternativo di ricerca. Facendo perno su una precisa casistica storica, si tenterà di dimostrare l’essenzialità dell’integrazione biografica attraverso dipinti non superstiti (il polittico di San Samuele del 1460-1468), l’importanza di una rete di rapporti fra gli artisti documentata dalle carte d’archivio e richiamata dalla materialità delle opere d’arte (i rapporti con i Vivarini, Giovanni Bellini e Benedetto Diana) e le potenzialità dell’occhio del conoscitore nell’organizzazione di un eventuale bozza catalogica, secondo un progetto di studio bastianesco che abbia come finalità ultima quella di ricompattare la personalità del pittore per rileggere, in chiave storica, un itinerario.

The relationship between disegno and Renaissance Venetian art has historically been a problematic one, with emphasis instead being placed on the Venetian predilection for colore. Scholarship of the past few decades has, however, challenged this perspective and drawn attention to the importance of the Venetian disegno. This digital conference brings together an international group of scholars and some of the most novel research in this field in order to establish a new frontier. Disegno is applied in its multifaceted nature to encompass the physical act of drawing, the tangible drawn object and the role of design in artistic practice. Papers will bear witness to this mutability by addressing topics including printmaking, workshop reuse, under-drawings and the adoption of diverse graphic media by Venetian artists active between circa 1430 and 1620. The term 'Venetian' is here taken in its broadest sense to encompass both Venice and its mainland territories. Also under consideration are artists who relocated to the Veneto and their contribution to the region's artisanal culture. In its broad chronological, geographical and technical scope, this conference will reinvigorate consideration of what defines both Venetian art and the Venetian disegno.

Il 28 aprile 1473, dalla sede del Balio di Costantinopoli, il mercante ed orafo veneziano Antonio Corradi scrive al cognato Niccolò Gruato per ottenere, oltre ad una copia della Bibbia, una “figura di Jesu Cristo” da far dipingere a Lazzaro Bastiani o, nel caso in cui questi si fosse mostrato impossibilitato, a Giovanni Bellini. Il documento, da tempo ritenuto associabile ad un quadretto bastianesco, suggerisce di tornare a riflettere sulle forme, le funzioni e gli stili della pittura di devozione a Venezia secondo le direttrici di un confronto fra i due artisti rimasto sinora sconosciuto agli studi. La mancanza di un’indagine complessiva sulla vicenda di Bastiani non ha consentito di individuare i motivi di allineamento e collisione della sua produzione devozionale con gli esiti vertiginosi raggiunti sul tema da Giambellino. Questo contributo intende soffermarsi su tale ordine di problemi, privilegiando il significato assunto, nello sviluppo dello statuto quattrocentesco del quadro per la preghiera e la meditazione privata, dai rapporti fra il patriarca del moderno dipingere lagunare e il campione di una richiestissima pittura di marca artigianesco-muranese. Se in più di un momento della carriera di Bastiani si registrano debiti precisi nei confronti del magistero belliniano, la comune volontà di adeguamento al formulario della tradizione religiosa più antica si accompagna, in Giovanni, ad un’alta poetica degli affetti, in Lazzaro a posizioni sottilmente austere ed arcaizzanti. Sulla scorta di opere poco studiate quando non inedite, si considereranno le scelte dei due artisti in materia di stile, genere ed iconografia (il passaggio dalla tavola di pertinenza cristologica o mariana alla ‘sacra conversazione’), senza trascurare il piano dell’organizzazione del lavoro di bottega (il riutilizzo di disegni standardizzati e cartoni preparatori): il che vorrà dire ricostruire un episodio della pittura veneziana ingiustamente trascurato come quello bastianesco e, soprattutto, ripensare a Bellini come al genio creatore di paradigmi figurativi duraturi e tipizzanti.

The book, whose cover appears here, analyzes three groups of artistic works undertaken in early sixteenth century Venice and their connections with policies in international finance and power relations espoused by the groups or individuals with which they were associated. They are the series of paintings and funerary monuments created for the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, the literary portmanteau Bodleian Canonician Ital. 36 hypothesized to have been compiled by Stefano Magno, and the performances of Angelo Beolco il Ruzante at the invitation of patricians with whom his family had been in contact for the preceding two generations. A coda analyzes the visit of Niccolo' Machiavelli to the city in the context of Venice's state lottery and the war of the League of Cognac. Among the scores of archival documents discussed are ones demonstrating that Beolco's Milanese family saved the investment of Venetian patricians in a delayed Flanders galley round in the 1480s and a possibly autograph document of a young Gaspare Contarini concerning a dispute between his family and a group of peasants over the boundary between their respective rural holdings.
