EXPLAIN CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION DIVISION

CHEMICAL REACTION

A process in which one or more substances, the REACTANTS,

are converted to one or more different substances , the
PRODUCTS.

What are the factors affecting the rate of chemical reaction?

7
COLLISION THEORY
-for a particle to react, they have to collide with each
other with sufficient energy (ACTIVATION ENERGY).

What is Activation Energy?

-the minimum amount of energy needed to start a reaction.

8
EXPLORE CURRICULUM IMPLEMENTATION DIVISION

What is Rate of Reaction?

-the rate at which chemical reaction proceeds (how
fast or slow a reaction occurs)

How does a Chemical Reaction occur?

Reaction occurs when two or more

molecules collide with each other.

Factors Affecting the Rate of Chemical Reaction

Concentration Surface Area

1) CONCENTRATION : If the concentration of reactant is

increased, the reactant particles become more crowded.
Therefore, there is greater chance of the particles colliding.
Thus, the rate of reaction increases.

Rate = k [A]
[A] Rate

11
2) TEMPERATURE : Once substance is heated, the
particles move more quickly and they have more kinetic
energy. The particles collide more often and more collisions
are successful. Therefore the rate of reaction increases.

T Rate

3) SURFACE AREA: Smaller reactant

particles provide a greater area with
Which increases the chance for particle
collision. Therefore, rate of reaction
increases.
4) CATALYST (Enzymes): lower activation energy of
a chemical reaction and increase the rate of chemical
reaction without being consumed in the process.
Catalyst Work By:
- Increasing the frequency of collision between reactants
- Altering the orientation of reactants
- Reducing intramolecular bonding within reactant
molecules.
- Donating electron density to the reactants
Therefore, the lower the activation energy, the faster the rate of reaction.
The higher activation energy, the slower the rate of reaction.

reactions applied in:
1) Food Preservation
2) Control of Fire
