Learning Guide: 4.2

Topic: Occurrence of Chemical Reaction

I. Introduction:

Chemical change is a central concept in chemistry. The goal of chemists is to know how and

why a substance changes in the presence of another substance or even by itself. Because

there are tens of millions of known substances, there are a huge number of possible chemical

reactions. In this chapter, we will find that many of these reactions can be classified into a

small number of categories according to certain shared characteristics.

Chemistry is largely about chemical changes. Indeed, if there were no chemical changes,

chemistry as such would not exist! Chemical changes are a fundamental part of chemistry.

Because chemical changes are so central, it may be no surprise that chemistry has developed

some special ways of presenting them.

II. Objectives: In this module, you should be able to:

1. Apply the principles of conservation of mass to chemical reactions;

2. Explain how the factors of chemical reactions are applied in food preservation and

production, control of fire, pollution and corrosion; and

Learning Area Science

Content/Topic Occurrence of Chemical Reactions

Content Standard The learners demonstrate understanding of chemical reactions

associated with biological and industrial processes affecting life and the

environment

Performance The learner should be able to use any form of media, present chemical

Standard reactions involved in biological and industrial processes affecting life

and the environment.

MELCs Investigate the relationship between:

 Apply principles of conservation of mass to chemical reactions

 Explain how factors affecting rates of chemical reactions are

applied in food preservation and materials production, control of

fire, pollution, and corrosion

VI. Evaluation

A. Identify the term being described.

________________1. A new substance formed.

________________2. It is a substance that increases the rate of chemical reaction.

________________3. This tells how fast or slow the reaction occurs.

________________4. What chemical reaction causes corrosion of iron?

________________5. What chemical reaction causes rancidity in food?

________________6. What substance causes a chemical reaction without itself being

affected?

________________7. What is the ratio of the volume of hydrogen and oxygen

present in water?

________________8. What reaction involves the absorption of energy to form new

products?

________________9. What reaction does a compound break down into simpler

substances?

________________10. A reaction where one is reduced and the other is oxidized.

B. Identify the type of reaction in each of the following chemical equations.

1. 2H2(g) + O2(g) 2H2O(g)

2. CaCO3(s) CaO(s) + CO2(g)

3. C6H12 + 9 O2 6 CO2 + 6 H2O

4. MgCl2 + Li2CO3 MgCO3 + 2 LiCl

5. Pb + FeSO4 PbSO4 + Fe
