More About Polygons
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners,
can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions,
directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to
understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-
step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teachers are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how
they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part
of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and
tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the
tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you!

What I Need to Know
Good day!
So, this module will help you to understand more about polygons.
After going through this module, you are expected to:
1. visualizes, names, describes and draws polygons with 5 or more sides.
(M5GE-IIIc-19)
2. describes and compares properties of polygons, regular and irregular
polygons. (M5GE-IIIc-20)
3. visualizes the congruent polygons. (M5GE-IIIc-22)

1 Polygons With
5 or More Sides
Polygons are closed plane figure formed by line segments that meet at
a common point. These line segments also known as sides meet at a common
point which is called vertex.

What’s New
Jasmin, a grade 5 student, was walking her way to her school, Look 2nd
Elementary School, suddenly, rain started to pour. Luckily, she brought her
umbrella.

One common polygon that we use is the umbrella. This polygon is called
an octagon. The capital letters written at each vertex are used to name each
side of the polygon. It is also used to name the angles and the polygon itself.
This polygon has 8 sides. They are AB, BC, CD, DE, EF, FG, GH and AH.
This polygon has 8 angles. They are ∠A, ∠B, ∠C, ∠D, ∠E, ∠F, ∠G, and ∠H.

BCDEFGHA FGHABCDE
CDEFGHAB GHABCDEF
DEFGHABC HABCDEFG
Now that we can identify the sides and angles of a polygon, let’s learn
more about its type and classification. There are three types of polygon.
Types of Polygon:
a. Regular polygon has all equal sides and angles while the irregular polygon
has an unequal side or angle.
Regular Irregular
5
b. Convex polygon has every interior angle less than 180° while concave
polygon has at least one angle greater than 180°.
Convex Concave
c. Simple polygon has only one boundary and does not intersect the area of
the polygon while a complex polygon intersects itself.

What I Have Learned
Directions: Supply the missing words. Choose your answer from the box
below. Write your answer on a sheet of paper.
1. A closed plane figure formed by line segments that meet at a common point
is a ____________. These line segments also known as 2.___________ meet at
a common point which is called 3.__________.
8. A polygon with only one boundary and does not intersect the area of the
polygon is ________.
What I Can Do
Direction: On a sheet of paper, draw at least 5 polygons that you can see
inside your home.
Additional Activities
Direction: Make a polygon out of a recyclable material.
Example: Fiesta Banderitas made from cut-out wrappers of fruit juices.

What’s New
During their Mathematics Class, Renz, a Grade 5 learner from Look 2nd
Elementary School, noticed that the section of the beehive is shaped like a
hexagon.
9
What is It
AB= 6 mm DE= 6 mm
BC= 6 mm EF= 6 mm
CD= 6 mm AF= 6 mm
We can also observe that the beehive section has equal sides and equal
angle. We can classify it as a regular polygon. Given that angle A measures
120°. Let’s give the measure of all the angles.

Let’s take a look at its angles:
∠ABC ≅ ∠GHI
∠BCD ≅ ∠HIJ
∠CDE ≅ ∠IJK
∠DEF ≅ ∠JKL
∠EFA ≅ ∠KLG
Since ∠ABC ≅ ∠GHI, given that ∠ABC is 120°. Then ∠GHI is 120°.
Since ∠BCD ≅ ∠HIJ, given that ∠BCD is 120°. Then ∠HIJ is 120°.
Since ∠CDE ≅ ∠IJK, given that ∠CDE is 120°. Then ∠IJK is 120°.
Since ∠DEF ≅ ∠JKL, given that ∠DEF is 120°. Then ∠JKL is 120°.
