What I Need to Know

Not all shapes have edges. Defined as the set of all points in a plane
with same distance from a certain point, circle gives us the idea of valuing
uniqueness from one another. Like other plane figures, it has distinctive
characteristics that can be used in studying Mathematics.

This module is designed for you to learn and understand the concepts
of the circumference of a circle; to appreciate its usefulness and importance
for many activities you encounter on a daily basis.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. visualize circumference of a circle (M5ME-IIIh-67);
2. measure circumference of a circle using appropriate tools (M5ME-IIIh-
68); and
3. find the circumference of a circle (M5ME-IIIi-70).

Lesson
Visualizing the
1 Circumference of a Circle

You have learned in previous years the idea of getting the perimeter of
a plane figure. Perimeter is defined as the distance around the polygon. Like
other figures, we can also measure the distance around the circle.

How do we measure the distance around the circle? Is there a formula

available in getting the said distance? Or can we just use appropriate tools to
determine it? Let’s find out in this lesson.

What’s New

Direction: Read and analyze.

Reese spends her time in her mini fish pond built by her father. One
day while she is playing, she thought that it would be dangerous to stay near
the deep pond. She realized that she needs to build a fence around the circular
pond for the safety of the people who wants to see it. How would Reese
measure the length of fencing materials she needs?

4
What is It

In order to find out how much materials Reese needs to build a fence in
her circular pond, she needs to determine its circumference.

What is circumference?

Circumference is the distance around the circle.

*The broken line represents circumference.

And there are different terms that can be associated with

circumference, these are Pi, diameter, and radius.
Let us define each term:

• Pi (π) read as “pie” is the ratio of circumference of a circle to its

diameter. It is an irrational number (a decimal that is non-repeating
and non-terminating) and it cannot be expressed as a fraction nor
decimal. This is why the Greek letter π is used to denote its value.
22
However, the rational numbers 3.14 and 7 are used as approximations
for π.

• Diameter (d) is a chord that connects two points on the circle and
passes through the center.

diameter
m.

*The broken line represents diameter.

• Radius (r) is a line segment from the center of the circle to any point on
the circle. It is one-half the diameter.

radius

*The broken line represents radius.

Lesson Measuring Circumference

2 of a Circle Using Appropriate
Tools

You have learned in the previous lesson the idea of circumference. It is

the distance around the circle.

How do we measure the distance around the circle? Are there

appropriate tools to determine it? Let’s find out in this lesson.

Let’s begin!

7
What’s New

Directions: Read and analyze. Write your answers on a separate sheet of

paper.

Piolo, a fisherfolk, is Reese’s father. He is helping his daughter to build

the fence on the circular fish pond he made. How can he measure the
circumference of the fence that Reese wants to build?

1. What is asked in the problem?

2. What are the tools can Piolo use to measure the circumference of the fish
pond?

What is It

In order to determine the circumference of the fish pond or anything

that is circular, we can use different measuring tools.

1. Tape Measure – a flexible measuring tool used for measuring soft or

rounded materials
2. Meter Stick - a measuring tool used to measure length up to 100
centimeters or a meter

8
3. Ruler – a measuring tool used to measure short distances

4. Diameter Tape - determines the tree diameter by

measuring its circumference

5. Rope/Yarn – use to aid unbendable/not flexible measuring

tool in getting the circumference

What’s More

Experiment Time!

Directions: You have discovered that the value of π is from the ratio of the
circumference of a circle to the length of its diameter. To understand this, let
us do the activity. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

Materials:
• 4 soda or tin cans or pet bottles of different sizes
• tape measure
• ruler

Procedure:
1. Label each tin can or pet bottle from A to D.

2. Using your tape measure, measure the distance around the four
bottles (circumference) in centimeters.

3. Measure the diameter of the base of the tin can using your ruler.

4. Divide the circumference by the diameter, are they related?

Lesson
Finding the Circumference
3 of a Circle

You have learned in the previous lessons the idea of circumference and
the tools to measure the circumference. Like other figures, we can also
determine the distance around the circle using some formulas.

What are the formulas that we can use to come up with the distance
around the circle? Let’s find out in this lesson.

Let’s begin!

What’s New
Directions: Read and analyze. Write your answers on a separate sheet of
paper.

Ma’am Rona, Reese’s teacher saw Piolo and his daughter measuring the
distance around the circular fish pond. She told the two that it would be easier
to get the circumference by measuring first the diameter or the radius of the
pond. The teacher left and Reese helped her father measure the pond. If the
diameter is 4 meters and the radius is 2 meters, what is the circumference of
the circular pond?

1. What is asked in the problem?

2. How would they solve for the circumference if they use the measurements
of its radius and diameter?

13
What is It

Again, Circumference is the distance around the circle. And we use

these formulas to solve it:
22
• C=πxd where π is equal to 3.14 or and d is the diameter.
7

22
• C=2xπxr where π is equal to 3.14 or and r is the radius.
7

Now that we have understood the concepts of the different terms

involved, let us solve for the circumference of Reese’s fish pond.
Using the formula with the diameter:

C= πxd
4 m.
C = 3.14 x 4

C = 12.56 meters

The circumference of Reese’s fish pond is 12.56 meters. Let us use the
other formula and radius as the given.

Using the formula with the radius:

C=2xπxr

C = 2 x 3.14 x 2 2 m.

C = 6.28 x 2

C = 12.56 meters

Using the other formula, the circumference of Reese’s fish pond is 12.56
meters.

What can you notice on the two answers? Yes, they are the same.

But why are the answers the same? Is it because one-half of 4 is 2 and
the half of the diameter is equal to radius?

Let us try other examples.

14
Example 1

Penelope walked across a circular garden and it is 8 feet across the

center. How far will Penelope walk around the garden?

Since the garden is circular, the distance around it is the circumference

and the distance across is the diameter.

Solution:

C= πxd
8 ft.
C = 3.14 x 8

C = 25.12 feet

The circumference is 25.12 feet.

Penelope will walk 25.12 feet around the garden.

Example 2

Maam Lisa created an improvised rolling pin to use as a teaching

tool for her learners in TLE. Its top circular face has a radius of 1.5 inches.
How far does it roll in one complete turn?

Since a rolling pin’s complete roll covers the distance around itself, it is
the circumference. And given the radius of 1.5 inches, we can use the formula
C=2 x π x r.

Solution:

C=2xπxr
1.5 in.
C = 2 x 3.14 x 1.5
C = 6.28 x 1.5
C = 9.42 inches

The rolling pin rolls 9.42 inches to make one complete turn.

Let us try to derive some other formulas that are related to

circumference. Refer to example 3.

15
Example 3
Let us complete this table.

Circle Radius Diameter Circumference

1 3 m.

2 15. 25 cm.

3 43.96 ft.

Solution:
1 2 3
Given: r = 3 m Given: d = 15.25 cm Given: C = 43.96 ft.

d=2xr r=
1
xd C=πxd
2
43.96 = 3.14 x d
d=6m 15.25
= 43.96
2 d= ft.
3.14
C=πxd
r = 7.625 cm
d = 14 ft.
= 3.14 x 6 m
C=πxd 1
C = 18.84 m r= d
2
= 3.14 x 15.25 cm
14
= 2
C = 47.885 cm
C = 7 ft.

Answer:

Circle Radius Diameter Circumference

1 3m 6m 18.84 m

2 7.625 cm 15. 25 cm 47.885 cm

3 7 ft. 14 ft. 43.96 ft.
