Looking Back to Your Lesson

Before we compare and arrange decimal numbers, try to answer the following:

1. 94.7632 is read and written as

A. ninety-four point seventy-six thirty-two
B. ninety-four and seventy-six thirty-two hundredths
C. ninety-four and seven thousand six hundred thirty-two thousandths.
D. ninety-four and seven thousand six hundred thirty-two ten thousandths

2. In 9.8645 what is the place value of the digit 4?

A. tenths
B. hundredths
C. thousandths
D. ten thousandths

3. Give the value of the underlined digit in 97.5821.

A. eight
B. eight tents
C. eight hundredths
D. eight thousandths

BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Decimals show values that are less than one. They use a continuation of the place
values that show whole numbers. Each place value is ten times less as you move to
the right. This means that the first place to the right of the decimal point (the
decimal point separates the whole units from the decimal parts) is tenths, the next
is hundredths, and then thousandths.

A. COMPARING DECIMALS:
To compare decimals, we can use tenth grid chart or a 10 x 10 grid. Let us study the model
below.

Compare the
tenths place,
0.6 is
greater than
0.06.
Therefore
0.6 > 0.06

= 0.06
 = 0.6

4

= 0.3

Since 0.3
and 0.6 have
the same place
 value,
= 0.6 0.3 < 0.6

Analyze this problem:

Lola Felisa prepares a square shaped special puto for special occasions.
In her grandson’s birthday, she cooked special puto. Each special puto is exactly the same
size and is divided into equal parts called slices. At AJ’s party each child had 2 out of 10
slices from a single special puto. At Carl’s party, each child had 15 out of 100 slices from
a single special puto. To whose party did each child have more puto?

Answer the following questions before proceeding to the illustration.

• How do you describe Lola Felisa?

• If you were AJ and Carl what food will you request your lola to cook?
Why?
We can solve the problem using these diagrams.

AJ’s Party Carl’s Party

2 slices out of 10 slices of puto 15 slices out of 100 slices of puto each child
get each child get

Through this illustration, can you tell now whose party did each child have
more puto?

5
You can also solve the problem using these tables.
A. Write a fraction to represent each party

Party Number of slices Fraction

AJ’s Party 2 out of 10

Carl’s Party 15 out of 100

B. Write them in decimal form

Party Fraction Decimal

AJ’s Party 0.2

Carl’s Party 0.15

Align the digits according to their place values, then start comparing from
leftmost digits.
You can use zero
as a place holder,
so 0.2
0 . 2 0 is equal to 0.20

0 . 1 5

Comparing 0.20 with 0.15

0.20 > 0.15 or 0.2 > 0.15

Answer: The children in AJ’s Party got more puto.

B. ARRANGING/ORDERING DECIMALS:
Let’s study the illustrations below to arrange decimals based on the shaded
amount.
-
Smallest/Least: 0.33 – C
0.51 – D
0.6 – A
Largest/Greatest: 0.8 - B

REMEMBER
To compare and order decimals, follow these steps;
1. Align the digits according to their place values.
2. Start comparing from leftmost digits.
3. Find the place value where the digits differ.
4. The decimal with the greatest digit is the greatest number and the decimal
with the least digit is the least number.
* Affixing or removing zeros after the nonzero digit of a decimal does
not change its value.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Arrange the decimals from least to greatest.
