Abstract  This work presents the effect, in terms of  travel distance and material handling time reductions, of an optimal rather than a uniform item allocation in one-block picking warehouses, both with and without the use of a simple picking heuristic. Since developing efficient product-location strategies represents a critical issue in Operations Management, due to the impact on warehouse performance in terms  of both service level and operation costs, this paper focuses on an effective quantification of obtainable travel time reductions, obtaining a significant result for manufacturing companies aiming to determine the most appropriate material handling resource configuration. Building on previous work on the effect of slot-code optimization on travel times in single/dual command cycles, the authors broaden the scope to include the most general picking case, thus widening
the range of applicability and realising former suggestions for future research.

Warehouses constitute a key component of supply chain networks. An improvement to the operational efficiency and the productivity of warehouses is crucial for supply chain practitioners and industrial managers. Overall warehouse efficiency largely depends on synergic performance. The managers preemptively estimate the overall warehouse performance (OWP), which requires an accurate prediction of a warehouse's key performance indicators (KPIs). This research aims to predict the KPIs of a ready-made garment (RMG) warehouse in Bangladesh with a low forecasting error in order to precisely measure OWP. Incorporating advice from experts, conducting a literature review, and accepting the limitations of data availability, this study identifies 13 KPIs. The traditional grey method (GM)-the GM (1, 1) model-is established to estimate the grey data with limited historical information but not absolute. To reduce the limitations of GM (1, 1), this paper introduces a novel particle swarm optimization (PSO)-based grey model-PSOGM (1, 1)-to predict the warehouse's KPIs with less forecasting error. This study also uses the genetic algorithm (GA)-based grey model-GAGM (1, 1)-the discrete grey model-DGM (1, 1)-to assess the performance of the proposed model in terms of the mean absolute percentage error and other assessment metrics. The proposed model outperforms the existing grey models in projecting OWP through the forecasting of KPIs over a 5-month period. To find out the optimal parameters of the PSO and GA algorithms before combining them with the grey model, this study adopts the Taguchi design method. Finally, this study aims to help warehouse professionals make quick OWP estimations in advance to take control measures regarding warehouse productivity and efficiency.

In this study, we focus our attention on the warehouse logistics process. This project was developed in two phases: firstly, we made a comprehensive review on the basic concepts, mathematical models and some management strategies using a classical book; then, in the second phase, we propose an heuristic optimization method for positioning the products in the picking area of a warehouse, looking for minimize the walking distance to shipping orders. In the end we applied our method in a real Warehouse, aided for a partner Industrial Engineer Consulting and the results shows that our approach could reduce the tour length in all cases.

Internet of things is a new revolution in the capabilities of the endpoints that are connected to the internet, and is been driven by the advancements in capabilities of sensor networks, mobile devices, wireless communications, networking and cloud technologies.  The demand for high-individualized products and services is continually increasing. Global presence and diverse product portfolio further adds to complexity. Visibility is a key challenge in warehouse management as there is need for accurate and timely information on shipments. Due to its increasing complexity, it is difficult to handle with ordinary planning and control practices. In order to overcome the competitive business environment one has to take actions with the implementation of IoT in warehouses. This research work proposes an IoT architecture for order picking process in a warehouse. The major outcome of this work is the design of an IoT architecture for order picking process in a warehouse. The other outcomes are real time tracking and visibility into inventory, reduction of cost of warehouse operations and improved safety and reduced theft & pilferages. The future scope of IoT in warehouse is that while full automation is still relatively rare, even traditional man-to-goods warehouse operations have been impacted by new technologies, though people may still shoulder the greatest part of the workload.

This paper describes a system to improve indoor navigation through use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The terminal unit is an embedded system equipped with an RFID reader for localization, a mobile robot for navigation, and a combination of ultrasonic and IR sensors for obstacle detection and avoidance during navigation. To increase accuracy of an indoor guidance system, a triangulation method is proposed to accurately detect the location. While the proposed method can be verified by many methods, the accuracy is demonstrated through use of a mobile robot. It navigates to a designated location through continuously monitoring all RFID tags in the vicinity, localizing itself, and calculating the path to the destination.

A análise de investimentos é um recurso crucial para avaliação e tomada de decisão para qualquer investidor que vislumbra qualquer tipo de ganho, seja ele financeiro ou produtivo. Neste trabalho, será apresentado um estudo técnico e econômico quanto a substituição de um equipamento utilizado no congelamento de baterias de gelo utilizadas na distribuição de medicamentos de alta complexidade. A partir das análises apresentadas, verifica-se a viabilidade da implantação de um túnel de congelamento numa distribuidora de medicamentos. Foram consideradas como parâmetros técnicos as premissas estabelecidas na RDC 17 e o Manual de Boas Práticas na distribuição de medicamentos. Quanto às análises econômicas, foram consideradas as análises de custos operacionais, aspectos de depreciação de equipamentos, fluxo de caixa, Taxa Mínima de Atratividade, Payback, Taxa Interna de Retorno e Valor Presente Líquido.

When you can't go big like Amazon, it is not bad to think small. Niche retail and boutique stores that offer product with intricate details and personality are still in high demand. Customization could help smaller entrepreneurs fulfill market gaps and find their unique proposition.

Therefore, the objective of this research is to improve the process in the warehouse by applying radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. Methods: There are four steps in this research. First of all, the current of the receiving process and the picking process are studied. Second is to give the guideline for RFID application. Third is to implement of RFID system in this warehouse. The last one is to compare the result of the current process and the proposed process. Results and conclusions: The passive ultra high frequency (UHF) RFID is selected for used in this warehouse. The RFID readers are attached on forklift trucks, the warehouse entrance and loading dock area. The system used RFID tags in two forms: one form used to identify pallets and another to indicate the locations of shelves on which pallets are stored. After using RFID system in this warehouse, the results showed that the accuracy of inventory location increased from 78.2% to 100%. The cycle time reduces from 66 minutes to 47 minutes which is down to 28.79%.  Moreover, the empty storage location are known real time.

Central bank report (2009) emphasis that about 23% of the Gross Domestic Product( GDP) is logistics cost in Sri Lanka, while global bench mark is 10%. Hence, Sri Lanka has failed to utilize 13% of the GDP due to inefficiencies and ineffective logistics practices. Considering logistics, warehousing is one component which can add significant cost to the supply chain .This paper is an attempt to document empirically the relation between factors affecting warehouse efficiency/effectiveness and the overall performance of the warehouse operation. It has studied three factors which affect efficiency and effectiveness of the warehouse operations in Sri Lanka with respect to Fast Moving Consumer Goods( FMCG) industry. Such as, simplicity/complexity of the Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Product slotting techniques and layout planning of the warehouse. Findings indicate the expected significant correlation between factors affecting warehouse efficiency/effectiveness and the overall performance of the warehouse operation. The results of the research revealed that three factors which have studied, has positive impact to the performance of each warehouse operations. Research findings further revealed other related issues which has been affecting to the effectiveness of the operation. Most of the warehouses do not understand the importance of adopting best practices or may not be successfully implemented in order to increase the level of productivity. So that, this research has provided some recommended practices to the local warehousing sector as well.

One of an essential component of any supply chain is Warehouse. Its major rules are: to buffer the material flow alongside the supply chain to calibrate with variability caused by product seasonality and/or bundling in production and transportation; to consolidate products from different suppliers, unified delivery to clients; lastly to add value such as, labelling, pricing, kitting and product customisation (Gu et al, 2006) Main functional areas in warehousing operations described by Sabonski are inboundoutbound operations, value-added service operations, material returns, office functions and inventory control. On one hand inventory process is supported inbound operations since it consists of the material receiving, checking, sorting, stocking. On the other hand, material flow from inventory to a customer is supported by outbound operations since it consists of picking, packing, loading and shipping processes (Sabonski, 2009).

Nowadays, the warehouse acts as a competitive factor in any supply chain as it has a main role in linking all the partners in it. Hence, it has become very necessary to allocate its resources efficiently and manage it effectively. A sound warehouse management system can contribute to cost reduction and improve customer satisfaction. However, traditional warehouse management system models have become unsuitable and inefficient for today's market requirements. So, companies have started to adopt innovative approaches and technologies to be used for such applications; one of these technologies is the Internet of Things that enables the connection between several physical objects and produces a massive amount of real-time data that can be transferred to useful information that helps in managing and decision making. In this paper, the architecture of this application is illustrated, its potential benefits are overviewed, and a framework for implementing this technology in a warehouse is proposed. This system can help in achieving more control and monitoring on all the operations in the warehouse in real time, increase speed and efficiency, and prevent counterfeiting and inventory shortage. The proposed framework can be taken as a roadmap for enterprises to improve warehouses by using the Internet of Things. Also, the benefits of implementing the proposed framework and its challenges are proposed.

Manual order picking is considered as one of the costliest and time-consuming processes in a manual picker-to-order system. The process starts with customer orders release. After distributing the orders to multiple order pickers, order picking associates starts to fulfill customer demands. Picking is the process of collecting (picking) the order items from their storage locations. Finding the most efficient route to visit all items locations is the main goal of optimizing order picking routing path. Due to the fact that each warehouse runs its operations with multiple pickers, and the pickers may work in the same zone to pick items on customer orders, congestion may occur during the picking time. This can affect the order picking finishing time. The optimization solution obtained without considering the order picking congestion might not provide the most satisfaction result. Most of the studies focus on the single picker to order systems, where the effect of the congestion does not exist. However, in reality, multiple pickers are used. Therefore, this research will focus on the congested order picking problem, and solve for the best picking route. Literature will be reviewed to identify the studies that consider the congestion effect in multiple picker systems, and to review the models used to represent this problem.

This technical report summarizes the SCMS training in warehouse operations management, conducted in 2011 and 2012 in South Africa, and its impact on warehouse improvement in Ethiopia. Although some of the lessons learned in South Africa are not yet applicable to Ethiopia, the impact the training has had on staff and warehouse operations to date is significant.

Feedback from staff indicates that knowledge has increased in a number of key areas, resulting in the development of site-specific action plans. Through hands-on training and site visits, the training enabled trainees to gain practical skills and see how operations work as a whole. These experiences have not only built skills, but facilitated a new vision of warehouse operations and management. At the same time, during the last two years of training, staff retention, long perceived as a problem in developing countries, has remained high, at 87 and 86 percent for PFSA and SCMS trainees, respectively.

Qualitative assessment, which looked at 58 warehouse improvement indicators, shows that significant improvements were realized at all sites after the training. The data should be understood as progress made as a result of the training; however, some sites do not have the ability to implement all the changes as outlined in the checklist. For example, eight indicators refer to a cold chain, which is not available at all sites. The indicators should be viewed, then, as improvements to the operations and processes.

From this perspective, each site has made significant improvements. Based on the lessons learned by the Ethiopian delegation, sites made improvements in 17 to 32 different areas, as outlined in this report. These improvements have enabled enhancements to a wide variety of operational procedures, which have in turn improved the operations of each hub and the system as a whole.

In recent years, the continuous increase of greenhouse gas emissions has led many companies to investigate the activities that have the greatest impact on the environment. Recent studies estimate that around 10% of worldwide CO 2 emissions derive from logistical supply chains. The considerable amount of energy required for heating, cooling, and lighting as well as material handling equipment (MHE) in warehouses represents about 20% of the overall logistical costs. ⎯ Storage activities, provision of warehouse location, handling of products, and removal of warehouses according to customer demand are important points affecting supply chain performance. The optimal placement of the products in the warehouse provides the advantage of customer satisfaction and cost minimization at the point of responding more quickly to the demands of the customers for the enterprises. Considering the high impact on the total warehouse costs of manual operations in warehouses, both time and cost enterprises prefer various automatic systems. At this point, automated storage and retrieval systems (AS / RS) are important for the supply chain by providing space, time and cost advantages. In this study a case for the integration between the IoT and the warehouse operations was conducted. A conceptual framework for the relationship and the integration of two notions was discussed.

Warehouse Management Systems (WMSs) have been developed for monitoring, tracking and controlling the warehouse operations, but with the increasing dynamicity of the market, traditional systems have become less efficient and unsuitable for today's market requirements, that is why new technologies have started to emerge to be used for such applications. Internet of Things (IoT) is a promising technology that can be used in the context of Industry 4.0. In this paper, a smart WMS framework based on IoT is proposed; this system helps the warehouse manager to achieve more control and monitoring of the operations in real time. A review of WMS and IoT implementation in warehouses is presented. Also, the blocks and layers of IoT are illustrated. Finally, the benefits and challenges of implementing IoT in the supply chain and the warehouse are discussed.

Recently many firms adopted a "green warehousing" approach in order to improve their environmental performances. The common driver of the solutions identified is in the reduction of the energy consumptions, considered as the key "greening element". The optimization of energy required by order picking (estimated to count up to 55% of the total energy for warehousing activities) can be obtained by means of the adoption of forklift equipped by different engines or by means of the optimization of operational activities such as the pickers routing, the movements for material handling, etc. In literature, the type of forklift and the storage configuration to be adopted are addressed as different issues. In this study a support decision tool based on an iterative nonlinear integer model is developed. The tool allows identifying the strategy (the type of forklift and the storage configuration to be adopted) optimizing the environmental performances of warehouse activities.

Abstract
In recent years the sophistication and application of Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) has increased significantly and they are now seen as vital systems for gaining efficiency improvements and cost savings within the logistics industry. However, the successful implementation of a WMS is rare. Therefore, this study’s aims were to explore the key factors that influence the success of a WMS development project. Twenty two interviews were conducted with Directors, Senior Managers and Consultants that had been associated with WMS implementations. The findings show that there are conflicting views between Directors and Senior Managers with both groups focusing on different priorities during a WMS project. In addition, appointment of a project champion, frequently an external consultant is important in ensuring that there is good communication between all the stakeholder groups. The study concludes that many Directors need to develop their understanding of WMS development projects, in order to avoid becoming completely reliant on a consultant project champion who is always likely to leave the organisation at some point.

This effort provides insight into the interactions of the supply chain, the need for impact evaluation of the supply chain relationships and information sharing. Companies that manage regional distribution centers are expected to implement the system in order to maintain their competitive edge in the global market place.

Abstract Given the increasingly  significant impact of  an efficient product-location strategy on warehouses’ performance from a service level and operational costs perspective, this paper presents a possible operations research-oriented solution to provide a tangible reduction of the overall required warehousing space, thereby translating the storage location assignment problem (SLAP) into a vertex colouring problem  (VCP). Developing the topic of their previous work on the development of an effective multi-product slotcode optimization heuristic, the authors focused on finding a cost-effective way to solve the SLAP through a mathematical-optimization approach. The formulation validation on a real industrial case showed its high optimization potential, and benchmarking simulations displayed performances significantly close to the best theoretical case. Indeed, the optimized value results were definitively close to the SLAP lower bound calculated assuming a randomized storage policy which, distinct from the developed solution, must inevitably be supported by warehouse management system software. On the  contrary, the proposed methodology relies upon a  dedicated storage policy, which is easily implementable by companies of all sizes without the need for  investing in expensive IT.

Tidak sedikit perusahaan yang sudah menggunakan sistem warehouse management ini masih banyak yang terjadi kesalahan dalam mengatur stok gudang. Seperti yang terjadi pada PT. Bakti Nugraha Yuda Energy. Jika hal ini dibiarkan atau didiamkan saja maka akan berdampak kerugian bagi perusahaan tersebut. Salah satu contoh adanya perbedaan stok barang yang terdapat pada sistem informasi dengan stok barang yang terdapat di gudang. Hal ini dapat menyebabkan terjadinya perbedaan stok pada saat adanya permintaan barang dari pengguna, karena jumlah stok barang yang tidak terkontrol dengan baik. Perbedaan stok barang ini terjadi karena barang pindah ke gudang departemen yang lain, kesalahan dalam menginput data keluar atau masuk barang, lokasi barang yang tidak tertata, kode barang tidak sesuai dengan barang, kode rak pada sistem informasi dengan rak di gudang berbeda.

In this paper we approach a typical warehouse problem that is common to most industrial businesses, were efficiency is given by the best arrangement of items in the warehouse (slotting) and the best picking routes selected for each order (picking). Yet, when implementing picking and slotting optimization techniques, the information used is historical data that, in most cases, would fail to work given the many factors that affect daily
warehousing operations. On the other hand, simulation models have been used to make virtual scenarios of a warehouse and can predict, with some accuracy, what would happen if a specific decision was made, but these models also fail to work, due to the fact that the data collected is not a reliable one. Given the complexity of most warehouses, we have designed a
Warehouse Management System (WMS) that functions dynamically with real-time data, through the use of RFID technology and the integration of simulation and optimization
models.

Driven by both technological developments and the boom in e-commerce, the logistics sector is currently undergoing far-reaching changes in its production processes. These dynamics could well lead to radical changes in working and employment conditions in a sector in which the demand for manual labour is very high. This edition of Training & Employment addresses the various challenges – including digitalisation, the sector’s attractiveness to workers and skill and career management – that French warehouses and logistics platforms are currently having to face.

Materials and methods: Primary research data was gathered using questionnaires; the questionnaires containing both open-ended and close-ended questions were administered. The research data was analyzed using qualitative techniques. Presentation of the quantitative analysis results was done in form of pie charts and bar graphs. Multiple regression analysis was used to establish the relations between the independent and dependent variables. Results: The study established that the Relationship framework agreement helps the parties to understand to what extent they can build the foundation for their relationship. The more trust, transparency and cultural fit between a buyer and supplier, the more the parties are comfortable making investments in the relationship, innovations and continuous improvement opportunities that benefit both parties. Recommendations: The study recommends that Relationship framework agreement Businesses and business people should tend to view a relationship in balance sheet terms: each side should be equal. This is especially true in buyer supplier relationship. As a defined and establish supplier relationship develops, communication improves. Suppliers gain a more complete understanding of the businesses they serve, and this allows them to meet their needs more effectively.
