This user-friendly book provides a step-by-step guide to using the five major approaches to research design: quantitative, qualitative, mixed methods, arts-based, and communitybased participatory research. Phronetic organizational research is an approach to the study of management and organizations focusing on ethics and power. It is based on a contemporary interpretation of the Aristotelian concept phronesis, usually as ‘prudence’. Phronesis is the ability to think and act in relation to values, to deliberate about ‘things that are good or bad for humans’ in the words of Aristotle (1976:1140a24–b12). Phronetic organizational research effectively provides answers to the following four value-rational questions, for specific problematics in management and organization studies: 1. Where are we going with this specific management problematic? 2. Who gains and who loses, and by which mechanisms of power? 3. Is this development desirable? 4. What, if anything, should we do about it?

Sifat televisi yang demikian, disebut sebagai penyampaian pesan sepintas atau transitory maka pesan harus mudah di pahami dalam sekilas dan dengan jenjang konsentrasi yang tidak setinggi membaca. Televisi merupakan media massa yang sangat dekat dengan kehidupan masyarakat sekarang ini. Stasiun televisi swasta yang perkembangannya cukup pesat diantaranya adalah Trans tv. Trans tv adalah salah satu stasiun televisi yang memposisikan diri sebagai televisi gaya hidup atau life style. Selain Trans tv ada beberapa stasiun televisi seperti ANTV, RCTI, SCTV, MNC, Tv One dan lain sebagainya. Hal tersebut dapat dilihat ketika Trans tv mempersembahkan tayangan-tayangan garapan sendiri dan mendapatkan perhatian lebih dari masyarakat serta mampu menyaingi tayangan dari stasiun-stasiun televisi swasta lainnya. Keberhasilan tersebut dilihat dari banyaknya program garapan mereka masih eksis di dunia pertelevisian, dan banyak tayangan yang sampai saat ini masih tayang dan dipercaya dapat menghibur masyarakat. Salah satu program garapan sendiri yang kurang lebih sudah tayang satu tahun dan sampai saat ini masih eksis di dunia pertelevisian khususnya di Trans tv adalah My Trip My Adventure. Selain kebutuhan primer (sandang, pangan dan papan) manusia tentunya perlu memenuhi kebutuhan skunder dan tersier. Salah satunya yaitu melakukan perjalanan 5 atau travelling untuk melepas penat dan lelah. Namun, tidak hanya itu melakukan perjalanan atau travelling sering digunakan sambi melakukan pekerjaan guna untuk menambah pengetahuan dan menjadikan diri lebih fleksibel. Fenomena tersebut yang mendasari banyaknya tayangantayangan perjalanan di televisi. Selain Trans tv yang menayangkan "My Trip My Adventure" ada juga tayangan "Rute Keren" yang di siarkan oleh ANTV, di MNC "Mata Pancing", "Ring Of Fire" di Metro Tv dan lain sebagainya. Diantara banyaknya tayangan perjalanan dan petualangan yang ada di televisi, tayangan My Trip My Adventure lebih banyak menarik perhatian pemirsa. Hal tersebut dapat dilihat dari respon mayarakat melalui akun media sosial mereka terutama twitter, karena media sosial itulah yang peneliti amati serta eksistensi tayangan tersebut yang sudah berjalan kurang lebih satu tahun belakangan ini menambah bukti bahwa tayangan ini disukai masyarakat luas. The norms of science are deteriorating in American sociology. Deceptive research practices are now rewarded by being published in the top journals in the field. The sociology of race and ethnicity is increasingly dominated by a narrow ideological perspective. The rising ideological character of the sociology of race and ethnicity is associated with pervasive groupthink, publication bias, and the enhanced market power (“economic privilege”) of elites both in the field of sociology and in American society at large.

A theory that the economic benefits of volunteering are contingent on social class (as defined by similarities in labour market situation) is tested using seven waves of longitudinal data from the British Household Panel Study gathered between 1996 and 2008 and fixed-effects models. Volunteering has a positive effect on earnings, but it is confined to people in professional and managerial occupations. Employees in white and blue collar jobs do not benefit. The study suggests that inconsistent results from previous studies might be due to failure to consider occupational heterogeneity among volunteers.

The paper reports on both methodological and substantive findings. It presents a method for generating simplified representations for regional urban populations, their geographical sub-populations and communities. the method generates greatly simplified high-resolution socio-economic profiles of populated geographical areas from complex large census data sets.

Multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) are conventionally recommended in mental health
care literature as an important way to offer holistic treatment provision to patients. This
study aims to explore multidisciplinary teamwork in contemporary mental health
settings, particularly what aids and hinders the process of multidisciplinary teamworking,
and the social work contribution in such teams. In order to attain an in-depth
exploration of these phenomena, a single case study design was employed. Within this
design, data were generated through semi-structured interviews and structured
observation of a mental health MDT in Ireland. These data were analysed using
interpretative phenomenological analysis. The research highlights how the concept of
mental illness is contested within this MDT, with the medical model dominant within
an environment of fluid working arrangements. Professional role blurring and
stereotyping were found to impact the division of labour on this team, with role
negotiation found to be an integral part of retaining a professional’s practice identity.
This research raises concerns for social work’s capacity to function within mental
health MDTs in Ireland, and highlights ways in which social work educators might
respond in order to empower Irish social workers to meet the challenges of mental
health multidisciplinary teamworking.

For over fifty years, successive waves of critique have underscored that the apolitical character of much of Political Science research betrays the founding mission of the discipline to have science serve democracy. The Caucus for a New Political Science was originally based on such a critique, and the Perestroika movement in the discipline included a call for more problem-driven as opposed to theory- or method-driven work that would better connect Political Science research to ongoing political struggles. In recent years, movements for a public Sociology and public Anthropology as well as dissonant movements in Economics and related fields have added to the insistence that social science research was too often disconnected from the real world. Phronetic Social Science has emerged out of the ferment for change in the social sciences, starting with the much-debated book by Bent Flyvbjerg, Making Social Science Matter (Cambridge 2001). Flyvbjerg critiqued the social sciences for mimicking the natural sciences while proposing an alternative approach that focuses research on helping people address the problems they are facing in the context they are facing them. Today, Phronetic Social Science goes beyond the call for an alternative approach to social inquiry and its growing adherents are providing evidence that this alternative approach to doing research can enrich the social sciences by more effectively connecting research to efforts to address real world problems as people experience them. This essay provides a genealogy of efforts to connect Political Science to politics, a review of the major critiques of mainstream research, an explication of the rationale for more problem-driven, mixed methods research, a specification of the key principles of the phronetic approach, and examples of its application in the public realm. The essay concludes with implications for realizing a more political Political Science by way of taking a phronetic approach.

The article applies Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism to the research of the media portrayals of Ukraine and India in the Russian newspapers Trud and Izvestiya and Britain’s The Times and The Sun. The research based mainly on quantitative content analysis locates differences and similarities in the ways media deal with formerly dependent countries. Their portrayals are found out to be characterized by postcolonial condition significantly, and in Russia more so than in the UK.

The term ‘phronetic social science’ was coined in Making Social Science Matter (Flyvbjerg 2001). However, as pointed out in that volume and by Schram (2006), phronetic social science existed well before this particular articulation of the concept, but it was just not organized, recognized or named as such. Rather, it occurred here and there as scholars had adopted phronesis-like methods for their own purposes. The present title is the first organized volume of empirical–practical work in phronetic social science. Before Making Social Science Matter, phronesis, as a critical term of Aristotelian philosophy, had been theorized and its continuing importance as a key concept in Western thought had been convincingly argued by distinguished philosophers like Hans Georg Gadamer, Hannah Arendt, Alasdair MacIntyre and Richard J. Bernstein, among others. But no one had developed the theory and philosophy of phronesis into a practical methodology that could be applied by researchers interested in actually practising a phronetic social science. Making Social Science Matter developed such a methodology. Its implications were discussed and developed further in Making Political Science Matter (Schram and Caterino 2006). After these two theoretical–methodological contributions, it was evident that an important next step in demonstrating the usefulness of phronetic social science would be to illustrate, with concrete examples, how applied phronesis works in practical, empirical social science research. The contributions on applied phronesis contained in the present volume make clear that this next step has now been taken.

These background materials should illustrate some results of Chapters 4 and 5 of the book "Economic Cycles, Crises, and the Global Periphery" (Leonid Grinin, Andrey Korotayev and Arno Tausch, Springer 2016) which go beyond the usual page and word limits of book publishers nowadays.

There is ferment in the social sciences. After years of sustained effort to build a science of society modelled on the natural sciences, that project, long treated with suspicion by some, is now openly being rethought. A critical intervention in this period of reflection was Making Social Science Matter (MSSM) by Bent Flyvbjerg, published in 2001. In that book Flyvbjerg challenged the very idea of social science as a science modelled on the natural sciences. Flyvbjerg argued that, as the social sciences study human interactions that involve human consciousness, volition, power and reflexivity, attempts to build generalizable, predictive models such as those for the natural world are misplaced and even futile.

Nowadays, public policies often focus on economic values, such as efficiency and financial transparency. Public professionals often resist implementing such policies. We analyse this using the concept of ‘role conflicts’. We use a novel approach by conceptualizing and measuring role conflicts on the policy level, thereby linking policy implementation and social psychology research. We construct and test scales for policy-client, policy-professional and organizational-professional role conflicts. Using survey data, we show that policy-professional and policy-client role conflicts negatively influence the willingness of public professionals to implement policies. Concluding, we conceptualized and measured three role conflicts that can occur during policy implementation

This paper examines the development of SPSS from 1968 to 2008, and the manner in which it has been used in teaching and research in British Sociology. We do this in order to reveal some of the changes that have taken place in statistical reasoning as an inscription device in the discipline over this period. We conclude that to characterise these changes as a shift from ‘causal’ to more ‘descriptive’ modes of analysis is too simplistic. Such a shift is certainly apparent, but it meshes in complex ways with a range of other – just as important – changes, that together mark a phase-shift in the functioning of sociological quantification.

With a point of departure in the concept "uncomfortable knowledge," this article presents a case study of how the American Planning Association (APA) deals with such knowledge. APA was found to actively suppress publicity of malpractice concerns and bad planning in order to sustain a boosterish image of planning. In the process, APA appeared to disregard and violate APA's own Code of Ethics. APA justified its actions with a need to protect APA members' interests, seen as preventing planning and planners from being presented in public in a bad light. The current article argues that it is in members' interest to have malpractice critiqued and reduced, and that this best happens by exposing malpractice, not by denying or diverting attention from it as APA did in this case. Professions, organizations, and societies that stifle critique tend to degenerate and become socially and politically irrelevant "zombie institutions." The article asks whether such degeneration has set in for APA and planning. Finally, it is concluded that more debate about APA's ethics and actions is needed for improving planning practice. Nine key questions are presented to constructively stimulate such debate.

Various approaches to model the progression of a dynasty in terms of power are discussed. The efficiency-discounted exponential growth (EDEG) approach is presented, and the effects of changing decay type and growth rate are demonstrated. The Russian Romanov dynasty is utilized as an example for several of the approaches.

This paper reports on a quasi-experiment in which quantitative methods (QM) are embedded within a substantive sociology module. Through measuring student attitudes before and after the intervention alongside control group comparisons, we illustrate the impact that embedding has on the student experience. Our findings are complex and even contradictory. Whilst the experimental group were less likely to be distrustful of statistics and appreciate how QM inform social research, they were also less confident about their statistical abilities, suggesting that through ‘doing’ quantitative sociology the experimental group are exposed to the intricacies of method and their optimism about their own abilities is challenged. We conclude that embedding QM in a single substantive module is not a ‘magic bullet’ and that a wider programme of content and assessment diversification across the curriculum is preferential.

Research. His research uses a combination of quantitative, qualitative, and formal theoretical methods to examine the mechanisms that link social inequality to the health of populations, individuals, and the human body more generally. Corey currently manages UC Berkeley's interdisciplinary Center for Urban Ethnography (CUE) where he collaborates on projects with scholars from various fields, works on methodological issues, and directs an undergraduate training program in qualitative methods. He is also the lead instructor in Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis (CAQDAS) for the UCB Social Research workshops, where he provides methodological training and consulting to faculty, graduate students, and research teams from across the country.

In this article, the authors define a methodological framework for analyzing the relationship between state sequences and covariates. Inspired by the principles of analysis of variance, this approach looks at how the covariates explain the discrepancy of the sequences. The authors use the pairwise dissimilarities between sequences to determine the discrepancy, which makes it possible to develop a series of statistical significance–based analysis tools. They introduce generalized simple and multifactor discrepancy-based methods to test for differences between groups, a pseudo-R 2 for measuring the strength of sequence-covariate associations, a generalized Levene statistic for testing differences in the within-group discrepancies, as well as tools and plots for studying the evolution of the differences along the time frame and a regression tree method for discovering the most significant discriminant covariates and their interactions. In addition, the authors extend all methods to account for case weights. The scope of the proposed methodological framework is illustrated using a real-world sequence data set.

Mixed methods research has become increasingly popular in health systems. Qualitative approaches are often used to explain quantitative results and help to develop interventions or survey instruments. Mixed methods research is especially important in low- and middle-income country (LMIC) settings, where understanding social, economic and cultural contexts are essential to assess health systems performance. To provide researchers and programme managers with a guide to mixed methods research in health systems, we review the best resources with a focus on LMICs. We selected 10 best resources (eight peer-reviewed articles and two textbooks) based on their importance and frequency of use (number of citations), comprehensiveness of content, usefulness to readers and relevance to health systems research in resource-limited contexts. The efficiency-discounted exponential growth (EDEG) approach is presented, and the effects of changing decay type and growth rate are demonstrated. The Russian Romanov dynasty is utilized as an example for several of the approaches.

In this era of social, political, and ecological discord successful ‘movements’ become more important than ever. However with potential issues of mental health among activists we must better understand why activists disengage from activism rather than to only study why activist initially ‘engage’; which in turn helps us consider how we address issues such as self care.This is a mixed methods study investigating the relationships between mental health, support, and activist disengagement. Findings show that support is a stronger predictor of activist disengagement than either measure for mental health. Particular interaction effects for trans and people of color in the sample were also found.

The purpose of this book is to reveal the relationship between the English language and the Japanese by statistical analysis of social surveys. This book is based on several studies I have already published (which are different from my doctoral thesis) as well as many new analyses.
    One of the distinctive features of this book is its analysis of large-scale and nationally representative samples (e.g. random sample data). This makes it possible to reveal the general picture of Japanese attitudes and behavior concerning the English language, providing new insights which the previous work failed to reveal. In particular, this book statistically examines the characteristics of Japanese speakers of English (Chapter 1), opportunities for access to English education (Chapter 2), cross-national comparison of English proficiency between the Japanese and other people from non-English speaking countries (Chapter 3), characteristics of Japanese users of English (Chapter 4), the present and past situations of English learning in Japan (Chapters 5 and 6, respectively), Japanese attitudes toward foreign languages other than English (Chapter 7), the necessity of using English in the workplace and recent trends in this regard (Chapters 8 and 9, respectively), the effects of English skills on earnings (Chapter 10), gender inequalities in opportunities to take advantage of English skills in the workplace (Chapter 11), characteristics of positive attitudes toward an early start of English education (Chapter 12), and the effects of early exposure to the English language on ultimate attainment of English skills (Chapter 13). Based on the results of these analyses, I discuss the importance of deep understanding of the realities of Japanese society when shaping policies of English education and its goals, which requires us to make conduct an alternative, social- and politically-oriented study of English education.
