Punic African archaeology

A complete edition of all known Latino (and Graeco)-Punic inscriptions along with a detailed, comparative grammatical analysis, esp. with regard to phonology and orthographic practice. Several texts are presented here for the first time. These texts from Roman-era Tripolitania (the first centuries A.D.) render Punic systematically, although written with Latin graphemes. Until now they have been largely neglected by Semiticists. They thus provide, among other things, fully vocalised material, unusual for alphabetically written Semitic languages, which can provide us with insight into the historical and diachronic development of the (North-West) Semitic languages, esp. biblical Hebrew. At the same time, these texts are also interesting epigraphic texts documenting the spread of the Punic language into the African interior.

Food in Punic world is a relatively new field of research, of which the existing studies are quite unrelated: there are several publications on specific topics, such as agriculture or animal
husbandry in Punic establishments, industries of salt and of wine, or containers for cooking, but no one covering a more complete and comprehensive overview of what it had to compose the
usual diet in the Punic culture. This paper aims at making an approach to the many facets of food in Punic world to make us able to get a general idea of the way the diet of these peoples
was composed.

La alimentación en el mundo púnico es un campo de investigación relativamente reciente, del cual los estudios existentes están bastante inconexos: hay diversas publicaciones sobre temas muy concretos, como la agricultura o la ganadería en establecimientos púnicos, la industria de las salazones o del vino, o recipientes de uso culinario, pero ninguno que abarque una panorámica más completa y general de lo que debió componer la dieta habitual en la cultura púnica. Este trabajo pretende hacer una aproximación a las múltiples facetas de la alimentación en el mundo púnico para poder hacernos una idea general de cómo estaba compuesta la dieta de estas gentes.

In questo lavoro l'autore ricostruisce il contesto archeologico completo e particolareggiato di quei luoghi di culto tipici del mondo fenicio d'Occidente chiamati tofet e ne affronta lo studio dei culti. Si tratta di santuari a cielo aperto, che consistono principalmente in un campo di urne interrate contenenti ceneri di bambini e/o di animali accompagnate da stele o cippi votivi, a volte iscritti. La natura di questo tipo di santuario, che certamente ha le sue radici nell'area fenicia e che in Occidente è dedicato al dio Ba'al per lo più con l'epiteto di Hammon, è tuttora discusso in modo anche aspro, così come controversi sono i riti che vi erano svolti. Il lavoro di D'Andrea si concentra sui santuari individuati in Africa del Nord. Si tratta, nell'area mediterranea di cultura fenicio-punica, dei luoghi di culto più numerosi e omogenei tra di loro, che presentano inoltre un interesse specifico perché si sviluppano per un arco di tempo molto lungo – dall'VIII secolo a.C. fino all'epoca romana – con una continuità notevole e una concentrazione soprattutto in periodo recente. Una raccolta completa come questa di tutte le testimonianze archeologiche, accompagnata da una valutazione esauriente ed equilibrata, non era stata finora compiuta. L'Autore non si limita a riunire i dati, sito per sito, ma li analizza criticamente e li discute, presentando una ricostruzione dei diversi tipi di tofet, del loro sviluppo nel tempo e dei cambiamenti che presentano, coerenti seppur vari da luogo a luogo, e che investono in particolare anche i riti e i culti praticati. La corretta metodologia con la quale è condotta la ricerca, la quantità dei dati presentati e i risultati ottenuti in seguito al loro esame particolareggiato fanno di questo lavoro uno strumento prezioso per chiunque si occupi di archeologia fenicio-punica, specie per quanto riguarda la situazione complessa dei territori dell'Africa del Nord.

Agnelli, cavalli, delfini, elefanti, galli, molluschi, pecore, pesci, tori, uccelli: sono solo alcuni degli animali rappresentati sulle stele votive puniche del Nord Africa. Qual è il senso da attribuire a queste raffigurazioni: animale sacrificato? Animale-attributo della divinità? Animale simbolo di abbondanza, eternità, fertilità, etc.? Il presente contributo ha lo scopo di esaminare l’ampia documentazione iconografica relativa al mondo animale presente nei repertori lapidei punici o di tradizione punica del Nord Africa a partire dal V sec. a.C. e fino al IV sec. d.C. Il dossier raccolto dall’autore in una monografia in corso di stampa (I tofet del Nord Africa dall’età arcaica alla prima età romana. Studi archeologici e cultuali, «Collezione di Studi Fenici, 45») costituirà la base per un’analisi iconografica, iconologica e quantitativa di tale documentazione e dei cambiamenti in essa intervenuti nel corso dei secoli e, soprattutto, a seguito della conquista romana.

Se presentan los resultados de un sondeo estratigráfico realizado en el año 2010 en el barrio septentrional de la ciudad mauritana, al norte del castellum romano, que ha aportado datos de gran interés para la definición estratigráfica y funcional de la ciudad mauritana. Tras un sucinto balance de las actividades arqueológicas previas en la zona del yacimiento (de Montalbán a El Khayari) se presenta de manera detallada tanto la estratigrafía como los resultados, que han permitido la definición de cinco fases que abarcan del geológico a época contemporánea, siendo especialmente relevantes los resultados de la denominada Fase III o mauritana, fechada entre el año 200 a.C. y el 40 d.C., la cual ha deparado diversos contextos materiales y estructuras con usos de carácter tanto doméstico y artesanal como posiblemente cultual.

L’origine del santuario tofet va ricercata nella madrepatria fenicio-cipriota o a Cartagine? Che ruolo ha quest’ultima nello sviluppo e nella diffusione del tofet? E cosa accade dopo la distruzione della metropoli punica? L’analisi delle tendenze storiografiche, delle fonti classiche e dei dati archeologici e lo studio della localizzazione e della cronologia dei santuari tofet, dei loro repertori ceramici, lapidei ed epigrafici porterà a riconoscere un’identità fenicia in quello che chiameremo “Circolo del tofet” (VIII - metà VI sec. a.C.) ed una dipendenza dalle scelte politico-religiose della città punica nel “Circolo di Cartagine” (metà VI sec. a.C. - 146 a.C.). La ricerca e lo studio dei tofet neopunici (II sec. a.C. - II sec. d.C.), localizzabili nella regione magrebina dopo la fine dell’imperialismo cartaginese, suggerisce, infine, che questa nuova categoria santuariale nasca e si diffonda in più siti proprio in virtù della loro acquisita indipendenza socio-politica e religiosa conseguente alla distruzione di Cartagine la quale aveva fino ad allora osteggiato la diffusione di santuari tofet nel proprio entroterra africano.

The origin of the Tophet sanctuary has to be found in the Cypro-Phoenician Motherland or in Carthage? What is Carthage’s role in the Tophet development and spreading? And what happens when the Punic city comes to its end and afterwards? The analysis of the historiographic tendency, either through the classical sources or the archaeological finds, and the study of the localization and the chronology of the Tophet sanctuaries, and their pottery and epigraphic repertoires will lead us to acknowledge a Phoenician identity in the so called “Tophet Circle” (8th - middle of 6th cent. BC) and a reliance on Carthaginian political and religious choices in the “Carthaginian Circle” (middle of 6th cent. BC - 146 BC). Moreover, research and study of Neopunic Tophet (2nd century BC – 2nd cent. AD) in the Maghrebian area right after the end of Carthage’s hegemony suggest that this new sanctuary category arose in several different sites because of their brand new political and religious independency, after-acquired the destruction of Carthage, the city which had hampered the Tophet diffusion in its own African hinterland.

This volume presents for the first time a systematic study of the urban development of pre-and early Roman Numidia. Based on the questions of how Numidia was integrated into the Roman Empire and which actors are visible in the archaeological record, the author discusses both recent and older data from surveys and excavations. By means of autopsy, own fieldwork and the presentation of new diachronic city plans, the astonishingly early complexity of Numidia’s cityscapes is visualized. Houses, workshops, sanctuaries, funerary habits and economic developments are analyzed according to their continuities, ruptures and innovations. Through the focus on microregional/local evidence and by breaking with the accepted bipolar acculturation models, a fundamental reevaluation of North Africa’s so-called dark age and the identity discourses of that period is called for.

Despite its central agency in the Antiquity, the city of Carthage remains a big unknown. Throughout the centuries its history was target of political propaganda. Its archaeological reality was incompletely recorded, rare valued as a whole and sometimes just misunderstood. This book provides an archaeological planimetry of its Phoenician and Punic periods (8th to 2nd centuries BC). This was accomplished through the re-drawing of already published cartographies, aerial photographs and archaeological plans from ancient and modern excavations. The final document allows us to observe with new accuracy an urban development, which recalls that of the Greek Sicilian cities. It also allows us to postulate a soil uses management that took care of the existing relationship between these soil uses (households, harbours, tophet, necropoleis, industrial quarters, etc.) and its symbolic perception, as a result of the religious concepts about purity and impurity in the Carthaginian society.

La denominada región histórica o Círculo del Estrecho de Gibraltar constituyó una zona con una marcada personalidad propia en el marco general de la diáspora colonial fenicia de escala mediterránea, e igualmente en la inmediata fase de conversión de estas colonias en ciudades a partir de los cambios de época clásica. Se trata por tanto de uno de los espacios con mayor densidad de poblamiento de origen cananeo y que nos ha legado una historiografía histórico-arqueológica más rica y activa, contando por consiguiente con todos los ingredientes de un inagotable potencial para sumar nuevos datos de toda índole desde ambas orillas de la región.

En este sentido, son notables las novedades particulares o incluidas en procesos históricos más amplios aportadas por múltiples asentamientos tanto pertenecientes a la vertiente atlántica como a la mediterránea de esta región del Estrecho, incluyendo entre ellas aspectos tan diversos como los modelos territoriales y de poblamiento, técnicas y fórmulas arquitectónicas, prácticas funerarias y cultuales, redes y elementos de comercio, tradiciones artesanales, cultura material, etc., entre otros muchos.

En esta ocasión centraremos la atención sobre algunos yacimientos de gran interés complementarios a los ya reseñados, provenientes tanto de la bahía algecireña como de la costa mediterránea occidental de la península tingitana. Cuatro casos nos servirán para ilustrar estas novedades, cuatro yacimientos de diversa tipología recientemente excavados y aún en estado inédito o de incipiente publicación, que constituyen actualmente referencia para algunas de las principales líneas de investigación a escala regional.

En este grupo incluiremos la interacción entre poblaciones indígenas y fenicias detectada en el poblado de cabañas excavado parcialmente en Los Altos del Ringo Rango (Los Barrios), datado en época arcaica, y asimismo la larga secuencia de actividad cultual documentada en el santuario fenicio de la cueva de Gorham, en los acantilados del sureste de Gibraltar (la antigua Kalpe). Por su parte, proyectos aún en curso en el norte del actual Marruecos han posibilitado la investigación de importantes asentamientos costeros como Koudia Talaa (en las proximidades de la desembocadura del río Negro, en Fnideq) o también de los procesos de interacción entre poblaciones fenicias y mauritanas en el propio valle del río Martil, principal arteria de la zona, a través de yacimientos como Tamuda o Kitane. Procuraremos proporcionar una síntesis actualizada de estos casos, que servirán a su vez para plantear algunas cuestiones y propuestas extensibles a un marco regional más amplio.

Durante el año 2008 se realizó un transecto en la Puerta Occidental del campamento de Tamuda, que ha permitido obtener datos estratigráficos de gran interés para la datación de la secuencia romana del yacimiento. Sobre estructuras mauritanas correspondientes con la denominada «segunda destrucción» de la ciudad se erigió a mediados del siglo I d.C. el campamento romano, que cuenta con su primera datación estratigráfica post quem en esta intervención. Se ha documentado un taponamiento de la puerta en pleno siglo II d.C., asociado a un incendio, aparentemente generalizado. También se presentan las reformas fechadas en el siglo IV asociadas al cegamiento de los cubos interiores, todo ello unido a una interpretación general de las fases históricas de esta parte del castellum.

La présente contribution présente une stèle inédite déposée près de l’entrée principale de la casbah qui domine la ville d’El Kef, l’antique Sicca Veneria, en Tunisie centrale occidentale. Il s’agit d’une stèle punique tardive, datable entre le ier s. av. J.-C. et la première moitié du suivant, caractérisée par une scène de banquet entre deux personnages assis, probablement divins ; son iconographie constitue un unicum dans l’Occident punique et punique tardif, tant par ses thèmes que par son exécution, et renvoie à des éléments et des concepts de lointaine origine proche-orientale

Il contributo è dedicato alla presentazione di una stele inedita deposta accanto all’ingresso principale della kasbah che domina la città di El Kef, antica Sicca Veneria, in Tunisia centro-occidentale. Si tratta di una stele tardo punica databile tra il I secolo a.C. e la prima metà del secolo successivo caratterizzata da una scena di banchetto tra due personaggi seduti, solo probabilmente divini; tale iconografia costituisce un unicum nell’Occidente punico e tardo punico tanto per la tematica quanto per la resa e rimanda a elementi e concezioni di antica origine vicino orientale.

This thesis attempts to describe the entire corpus  of Latino-Punic inscriptions, found in Tripolitania. These texts dating to the first four centuries AD, attestet to the survival of Punic in a Latin environment. The work is divided into an introduction, a grammatical description and a text-edition. In this work we attempt to demonstrate that once spelling is distinguished from phonology, these texts render good Semitic. Latin influence is limited to some spelling conventions and a few technical loans. Libyco-Berber grammatical influence, often supposed in the past, seems to be lacking enitrely. The only trace of Libyan seems to be in  the onomasticon and possibly in the phonlogy, reflected in the pronunciation of certain phonemes in both Punic and Latin, i.e the 'African accent.' The major conclusion is that these texts cannot be used to posit the demise of Punic in Roman North Africa (nor is there any evidence for such at all), but rather to the vitality of Punic in this era (i.e. adopting the Latin alphabet and imitating Roman epigraphical genres).

Starting from the second half of the 6th century BC, the influence of Greek culture on the Punic world became increasingly prevalent. Sicily was the favoured setting for this process, marked by  the alternating defeats and victories in battles which were a feature of the history of the island throughout the 5th and 4th centuries BC. This phenomenon spread – through the filter of Carthage – from Sicily to the rest of the Punic world, in successive periods and different ways. This was a complex, progressive, but not always constant process, in which we also find examples of surviving and contemporary phenomena reflecting the Punicisation of the Greek and Elymian cities (Selinus, Monte Adranone, Eryx), brought about, once again, as a consequence of wars.
This paper seeks to analyze the latest stages of Hellenisation, when this process became relevant also in Tophets, cremation sanctuaries typical of Phoenician sites in the central Mediterranean, and was manifested in the adoption of Greek vessels, locally produced, for ritual practises and in the iconography of stelae and clay figurines. We focus our attention on two distinct cases: the Tophet sanctuaries of Motya, where the Hellenisation process was especially evident, and Tharros, where traces of Hellenisation were almost completely absent and we observe rather a North African influence.

In Near Eastern texts, mention is made of a goddess ‘ttrt ḫr/‘štrt ḥr which is sometimes rendered as the “Hurrian Astarte.” Until now, the second element * ḫr* has not been satisfactorily explained. In this article, a new etymology of the latter word is proffered
and this manifestation of the goddess Astarte is then associated with  Ἀφροδίτης λιµνησία “Aphrodite of the salt marshes.” It would then seem that this avatar of this Greek maritime goddess was borrowed from the Semitic world.

L'articolo si propone di rivolgere l’indagine su tre direttrici fondamentali: le trasformazioni architettoniche e funzionali dei tofet tardo punici, mai analizzate finora nello specifico nella letteratura archeologica, per illustrare le quali si farà l’esempio del santuario di El Kénissia; i fenomeni di continuità e discontinuità, assimilazione ed ibridazione fra i tofet ed i santuari dedicati al cosiddetto Saturno africano; il rapporto tra tali fenomeni e la trasformazione dei paesaggi del potere nell’Africa settentrionale.

Beni di lusso nel mondo punico. Le uova di struzzo III -Volti o maschere? I gusci delle uova di struzzo con la raffigurazione del volto femminile, di valore simbolico sacrale, esaminati con aggiornamento e rilettura dei dati, sono distinti tipologicamente in base alla forma del supporto e dei differenti tratti fisionomici in tre varianti cronologiche. L'analisi condotta riporta lo sviluppo del modello iconografico divino originario agli ateliers di Cipro, che svolse un ruolo intermediario nella trasmissione del tema all'ambiente fenicio coloniale d'Occidente. Il volto divino è adattato dagli artigiani cartaginesi sul guscio dell'uovo di struzzo, che ne esalta la valenza; il nesso uovo-figura femminile divina, simboli polisemici, alludono all'idea di nascita ma anche di rinascita, comunicando al contempo valori di vita e di morte.

Starting from the archeological and epigraphic evidences collected by the Author in a monograph recently
published (The Tophets of North Africa from the Archaic Period to the Roman Age. Archaeological studies,
Pisa-Rome 2014), this paper proposes a synthesis of data relating to the Phoenician and Punic sanctuaries
called Tophet and some reflections on the development of the ritual practices of these sanctuaries in the period
following the conquest of North Africa by Rome.

Como resultado de los Planes de Acción en desarrollo del Plan Estratégico de Tamuda (2008-2012) se ha considerado conveniente realizar trabajos arqueológicos diversos centrados en la actualización de la crono-secuencia del yacimiento, de cara a su próxima apertura al público. En este trabajo presentamos la información actualizada sobre el poblamiento en esta zona del río Martil, con un asentamiento estable desde época púnica –e indicios de ocupación precedente– la construcción de una imponente ciudad helenística en el siglo II a.C. y la instalación de un campamento en época de cons- titución de la provincia, activo hasta la primera mitad del siglo V d.C. De manera sucinta se plantean las diferentes hipótesis previas y se razona la cronología planteada en esta sede, en base a criterios estratigráficos.

This paper reviews the evidence from recent excavations at Euesperides (Benghazi, Libya)  for the cultural and trading contacts between Greek Cyrenaica and the western Mediterranean, especially Punic North Africa, in the early Hellenistic period, down to the site’s abandonment c. 250 B.C.
The ceramic assemblage indicates extensive trade between Cyrenaica and the Punic world, and also with Southern Italy and Sicily, which intensified greatly in the early Hellenistic period. The fine pottery shows a growing number of imports from Sicily and Magna Graecia from the late fourth century onwards, a picture confirmed by the transport amphorae which increasingly include Greco-Italic wine amphorae and Punic amphorae carrying salted fish and/or meat, and perhaps oil and wine, from the mid fourth century BC onwards. Just over a third of the coarse wares, including cooking pottery, are imported from outside Cyrenaica, principally from Punic Tunisia or Tripolitania, Corinth and probably Aegina. The Punic coarse wares represent 15% of the total coarse pottery at Euesperides, or nearly half of the imports. Some Punic cooking ware forms imitate those of Aegean or Aeginetan cooking wares. Punic cultural borrowings from the Hellenistic Greek world are also shown by the imitation of Greco-Italic wine amphora forms in Punic North Africa.
The terracotta and mosaic floors at the site also show a cultural interplay of technologies. The mosaics include floors in a mixed technique of uncut pebbles, split pebbles and irregular tesserae.  There are also floors made of opus signinum, and of terracotta sherds set in cement. While the aesthetic designs of the mosaics – either plain, or with a plain or simple central field surrounded by a border – owe more to eastern Mediterranean influences, the technology of their composition, with two-layer foundations, and the use of opus signinum floors, reveal strong influences from the Punic world and Sicily.

This chapter examines the use and function of neo-Punic inscriptions and neo-Punic/Latin bilingual inscriptions in Roman North Africa, especially Lepcis Magna. It considers how and why Punic was used as a language for monumental euergetism alongside Latin - both the public setting of the Punic texts, and the similarities and differences in phrasing between the two languages in bilingual texts such as the building inscription on the theatre of Lepcis Magna (AD 1-2), where differences in the Latin and Punic versions of the text point up differences in epigraphic habit between Latin and Punic and are clearly designed to appeal to different readerships. Conversely, brickstamps of the early second century AD show idiomatic corresponsions, where Punic stamps on locally produced bricks render the normal Latin epigraphic formulae on the imported bricks from the Tiber Valley used in the same projects. The chapter also tracks the persistence of Punic epigraphy on monumental buildings into the second century AD, examines the changes in the contexts in which Punic texts appear, and the emergence of Latino-Punic inscriptions in rural Tripolitania.
