Increasingly, our built and natural environments are becoming hybrids of real and digital entities where objects, buildings and landscapes are linked online in websites, blogs and texts. In the case of Aotearoa New Zealand, modern lifestyles have put Māori indigenous oral narratives at risk of being lost in a world dominated by text and digital elements. Intangible values, transmitted orally from generation to generation, provide a sense of identity and community to Indigenous Māori as they relate and experience the land based on cultural, spiritual, emotion, physical and social values. Retaining the storytelling environment through the use of augmented reality, this article extends the biophysical attributes of landscape through embedded imagery and auditory information. By engaging with Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa, a design approach has been developed to illustrate narratives through different media, in a way that encourages a deeper and broader bicultural engagement with landscape.

First-person accounts of madness and of encountering psychiatric services provide
important sociocultural and psychological knowledge about the subjectivity of distress.
The importance of such accounts is often based upon a claim of the authenticity
of personal experience. However, authenticity is a highly heterogeneous concept:
a popular current manifestation of the discourse of authenticity is in positive psychology,
where it is often underpinned by humanist assumptions such as the rational
autonomous self. The post-structuralist critique of humanism challenged such essentialist notions some time ago and has been adopted explicitly by research methodologies such as autoethnography. The purpose of this article is to argue that this tension—between the value of methods such as autoethnography that offer a legitimate
source of knowledge regarding the subjective experience of madness on the one
hand, and the problems with an essentialist conception of the ‘authentic’ self on the
other—can be addressed by the deployment of a reconceptualised form of authenticity
based on Spivak’s (in: Guha and Spivak (eds.) Selected subaltern studies, Oxford
University Press, Oxford, 1988) notion of ‘strategic essentialism’, especially when
modified by De Certeau’s (The practice of everyday life, University of California
Press, Los Angeles, 1984) distinction between ‘tactics’ and ‘strategies’. The implications
of this distinction in terms of developing autoethnographies of distress are then
discussed.

In this essay, I will be looking at the syntagmatic approach of Vladimir Propp in his Morphology of the Folktales, in which he breaks down the narrative structure of folktales into a number of linear functions which are uninvolved with either the Russian cultural context or any influential paradigm. With a critical approach to the text, I will be analyzing few psychological thrillers which prove efficiency of Propp's Morphology as well as it's competence in observing the narratives fulfilling his various functions, in modern cinema. Hem doktora tez çalışmam Antakya ve periferisinde saha çalışmaları ile geçtiğinden hem de 20 yılı aşkın bir zamandır bu kentte yaşadığım için bu anlatılara bizzat şahitlik ettiğimi de söyleyebilirim. Anlatıların çeşitliliği konusunda bu kadar zengin bir kent de Türkiye’de oldukça azdır sanırım.

The article contends that Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels occupy a special place among contemporary literature in that they superficially adopt traditional modes of storytelling, typically associated with the nineteenth century Bildungsroman, while destabilizing them through a first-person narrator keenly aware of the manipulative potentialities of plot(ting). It supports this contention in a twofold manner. Firstly, by scrutinizing the text’s apparent linear trajectory and, through Genette’s notion of the arbitraire, coming to the conclusion that such linearity is revealed to be, at the end of the penultimate section, entirely constructed by the protagonist in an effort to exact vengeance on her friend. The article proceeds to examine how the textual apparatus bears the brunt of this revelation. In doing so, it adopts Peter Brooks’s thermodynamic model and reconfigures it into a metabolic model meant to monitor the set of activities and energetic transformations at work in the text. It identifies a metabolic malfunction in the novel’s last section, manifested as a form of textual hypothyroidism whereby the plot becomes, as it were, constipated. The article finally concludes that in halting the progress of the novel’s plot, Ferrante offers a cutting commentary on our exegetic practices and our tendency to read consequence into sequence, while simultaneously advancing a geometry of narrative entanglement that stands in sheer opposition to the linear.

Suspendus aux lèvres d’un conteur, incapables d’interrompre la lecture d’un roman, captivés par un film haletant, nous faisons tous l’expérience quotidienne de ce plaisir apparemment paradoxal que nous tirons de notre insatisfaction provisoire face à un récit inachevé. Bien qu’une mode esthétique et théorique ait tenté de nous convaincre que ce plaisir était honteux, on peut néanmoins avoir l’intuition que le cœur vivant de la narrativité réside précisément dans ce nœud coulant, toujours plus serré à mesure que nous progressons dans l’histoire, qui nous attache à l’intrigue et creuse la temporalité par l’attente impatiente d’un dénouement. Si le récit a quelque chose à voir avec la manière dont nous éprouvons le temps, cette expérience n’apparaît jamais avec autant d’éclat que dans le suspense, la curiosité ou la surprise qui font la force des intrigues fictionnelles. La compréhension des fonctions narratives engage donc non seulement l’analyse littéraire, linguistique et sémiotique, mais aussi l’analyse cognitive et la psychologie des émotions.

The technique we practice to tell imagined stories among ourselves especially the construction and the preservation of the mythical stories is always important to our psychological development. Today, the world of digital games work as the foundation into artificial worlds, where the imagined stories are well maintained and prolonged. Mythic narratives have the power to develop above their standard and become "remediated" which means, they can stimulate, translate and adapt into other forms of media and afterwards create a life outside their original medium, where the artificial universe sustains, expands and grows in detail. (Bolter & Grusin, 5). Thus, the fictional world of the games exists beyond the game and have become more than the game. The mythic world has its own story to tell, its own metanarrative, framing and assistance of the game. The video game Asura's Wrath (2012) have advanced the borders of digital and narrative experiences and they merged the digital interaction with traditional notions of play and explained the mythological interaction. In other words, these games involve the activity of the play.

Rationality has since long been one of the central been issues in the discourse of management. Among the classics voices propagating a reductionist rationalism dominated and there are still many contexts where such a view is taken for granted. On the other hand, critics since the times of classics have been arguing for a less linear approach to management and management thinking. However, little attention has been paid to some of the di erent dimensions of management rationality, such as imagination. is paper sets out to address this gap in knowledge through presenting a narrative study focused on a literary character well known for his rationality, Sherlock Holmes, and revealing that this, to many, very epitome of rationality is actually an example of an extended type of rationality, including imagination. Following the ctional protagonist of our study, we consider some aspects of its relevance for management thought and practice.

This Working Paper identifies five prominent transnational narratives in France and the UK that aimed to justify restrictions towards immigrants from the Global South, from the 1960s to the mid-1980s, when both countries turned to restrictive policies structurally. France and the UK were the most exposed to large and autonomous migration flows from the Global South as a result of their former colonial empires. Parliamentary debates in the House of Commons and the French Senate, articles from British, French, and American newspapers, including a local French newspaper, and public speeches allow reporting an invasion narrative, a difference narrative, a humanitarian narrative, an oil-shock narrative, and a crisis narrative. The humanitarian narrative – presenting migrants as victims to protect – and the crisis narrative – putting forward insurmountable economic difficulties to curb immigration – became the most successful to justify state intervention to restrict immigration as they matched native workers’ concerns while minimising disturbances within destination countries.

I analyze narratives of people diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) to search for new evidence to improved efficacy in treatments  environments. The evidence of suffering -particularly the social suffering- is revealed as a reality with great presence in these powerfull narratives, which must necessarily be considered to articulate new paths, or improve therapeutic procedures and conventionaltreatment
aimed towards healing of these people. From my research experience, I propose understand these stories of grief as evidence for the clinic. So these narratives of suffering subjectivities can become auditors healthcare quality documents, allowing evaluating and improving practices by incorporating a different and more social understanding from the disorders. This perspective is implemented is of a social approach, based in a particular way in the social theory of emotions and anthropology of emotions. Ethnographic and narrative materials analyzed relate mainly to the fieldwork of the author, and researchs conducted by the author over the past five years, both in Spain and Mexico.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to document organizations' self descriptions of why they initiated sustainable development (SD) reporting and explore these explanations using an institutional theory framework. Design/methodology/approach -Constructs organizational narratives from semi-structured in-depth interviews with reporting champions who participated in an SD reporting workshop series. The narratives are analysed using institutional theory to explore how regulatory, normative and cognitive institutions combine with organizational dynamics to influence SD reporting activity. Findings -For these particular organizations, choosing to engage in reporting appears not to be a rational choice. Rather reporting is initiated because it has come to be an accepted part of pursuing a differentiation strategy, it offers some contribution to existing business challenges, and organizations value the rewards it offers. This rationale constitutes a cognitive mechanism within institutional theory. Originality/value -The paper provides useful information on initiating sustainable development reporting based on organizations' self descriptions.

The stories we are told? Brief glimpses, nothing more. Sometimes there is only one opportunity to talk, maybe a second, rarely more than that: arrangements are made and changed and rearranged and then cancelled, these are chaotic lives that people live. We collect these stories, attempting to tease out the narrative threads of their lives, of their involvement with Catch 22 1 .

This paper discusses the tensions between memory and forgetting, which are commonly found in journalistic narratives. The goal is to understand, in the light of the concepts of “duty of memory” and “abuse of forgetting”, as delineated by Ricoeur, the contradictions evidenced by the work with memory as carried out by journalists. For that purpose, Veja Magazine’s coverage of the Realengo Massacre episode is used as a reference, as it unfolded in two issues of the magazine: December 28, 2011, when the magazine presented the 2011 Retrospective, and dedicated a report to the tragedy that took place in Rio de Janeiro; and January 4, 2012, when Veja published the letter written by a teacher who had witnessed the bloodbath and criticized Veja’s memory/forgetting thus stressing that journalistic work of memory. Ultimately, journalism is approached as a mediating sphere of memory and is therefore subject to the dilemmas of reminiscence concerning the organization of memory in face of the texture of the events experience.

Este artículo analiza las narrativas de un grupo de mujeres que adoptaron monoparentalmente en Chile, producidas en el contexto de una investigación cualitativa más amplia sobre esta temática. Los resultados dan cuenta del paso de estas adoptantes por diversos dispositivos jurídico-judiciales, institucionales y técnicos durante el proceso adoptivo, en los que se pone en evidencia el tratamiento diferencial y discriminatorio del que la mayoría de ellas son objeto, así como las narrativas y prácticas de resistencia puestas en juego para cuestionar dichos dispositivos y legitimar sus proyectos adoptivos. This article offers a first exploratory critique of digital tools' socio-technical affordances in terms of support for narrative creation by media researchers. More specifically, we reflect on narrative creation processes of research, writing and story composition by Media Studies and Humanities scholars, as well as media professionals, working with crossmedia and audio-visual sources, and the pivotal ways in which digital tools inform these processes of search and storytelling. Our study proposes to add to the existing body of user-centred Digital Humanities research by presenting the insights of a cross-disciplinary user study. I corpi altri (deformi, disabili, mutanti, devianti, alieni, trasgressivi, cyborg) portano, infatti, su di sé – in alcuni casi inciso nella carne – lo stigma delle interpretazioni e delle rappresentazioni che la disabilità e la diversità hanno subìto, e tuttora subiscono, nelle diverse epoche della storia occidentale. La convinzione che attraversa il volume è che sia lo sguardo di chi osserva i corpi diversi a favorire forme di discriminazione e di esclusione nei confronti delle persone con disabilità o classificate dal sistema sociale come atipiche o non ordinarie.

This book, which consists of three parts – Visions, Representations and Incursions –, analyzes the dynamics of normalization/assimilation, as well as exclusion/ incorporation, of disability and diversity, proposing a path that crosses visions, representations and interpretations of different bodies compared to a standard defined and recognized as normal. The different bodies (deformed, disabled, mutant, deviant, alien, transgressive, cyborg) carry on themselves – in some cases engraved in the flesh – the stigma of the interpretations and representations that disability and diversity have suffered, and still suffer, in the different periods of Western history. The conviction that runs through this book is that it is the gaze of those who observe the different bodies that favors forms of discrimination and exclusion against people with disabilities.

L’article présente un genre particulier de récit, le feuilleton médiatique. Il s’agit d’articles de presse qui suivent un événement réel (p. ex. un conflit, une affaire, etc.), provisoirement inachevé ou incomplet, et dont la narration se poursuit au-delà du numéro quotidien. L’information tend ainsi à s’inscrire dans une série qui finit par prendre les contours d’un véritable feuilleton, avec son nœud, ses rebondissements et son éventuel dénouement. Ainsi, loin de fournir un récit atomisé constitué d’unités discrètes et autonomes, le feuilleton médiatique apparaît partiellement structuré et suit une logique séquentielle alternant mises en tension et résolutions de l’intrigue, liages en aval (anaphore, rappels, identifiants) et en amont (cataphores, hypothèses sur la suite, etc.). Dès lors, en l’absence d’une instance narrative centralisée qui aurait pour tâche de planifier l’intrigue, le feuilleton médiatique invite à s’interroger sur la nature de cette « intrigue naturelle » qui émerge au cœur du quotidien, et il nous conduit à reconceptualiser cette notion théorique centrale, aussi bien pour la linguistique textuelle que pour la théorie du récit.

This descriptive case study discusses the evolution of TOMS, one of the world's most famous 'double bottom line' companies, in terms of narratives and corporate social responsibility practices. This paper also discusses the company's crisis-response strategy and management after the company's model, referred to as One-for-one model, has been widely criticised by media following the study conducted by an outside research team. The work also aims to point out the dynamics of the competing and contrasting narratives from various stakeholders such as media outlets and outside researchers to provide an in-depth account of the various events that affected the narrative turns of the company narratives.

Este livro procura identificar necessidades, detectar entraves e elaborar estratégias para garantia do exercício de direitos materno-reprodutivos no sistema prisional brasileiro. Por meio da observação de estabelecimentos prisionais, da realização de grupo focal com presas e de entrevistas com especialistas, as autoras puderam identificar, no fluxograma do sistema de justiça, os entraves e as lacunas que impedem detentas de terem seus direitos efetivados; mapear a percepção de mães presas do tratamento jurídico-penal-social que lhes é concedido e granjear suas propostas para realização do exercício da maternidade na condição adversa em que se encontram. Como resultado da pesquisa, foram elaboradas trinta propostas sobre desencarceramento, convivência familiar e fluxo do sistema de justiça, se não para diminuir a população prisional feminina, pelo menos para reduzir as violações de direitos e as consequências do aprisionamento. Assim, este livro busca contribuir para o desenvolvimento e a divulgação da pesquisa empírica em Direito e para os avanços na defesa dos direitos de mulheres e crianças encarceradas no Brasil. Aims. The study was designed to assess how a day care programme once a week, for seven weeks, with group collaboration and social and cultural activities was experienced by clients. The aim was to provide some insight into how older adults with mild cognitive impairment perceive and experience day care. Background. As a consequence of social withdrawal, older adults with mild dementia may suffer a loss of meaningful social life and mental stimulus. Person-centred and collaborative day care may provide support to remaining abilities and facilitate for social activities. Little is known about client experiences and whether and how day care gives meaning to everyday life of persons with mild dementia. Design. A qualitative interview study in a narrative content analysis design.

"Carter's music poses struggles of opposition, for instance in timbre (Double Concerto), space (String Quartet No. 3) or pulse (String Quartet No. 5). His preference for the all-interval tetrachords, 4–Z15 [0, 1, 4, 6] and 4–Z29 [0, 1, 3, 7], is also well known. From these facets of Carter's music, I develop a narrative interpretation of his Petrarch sonnet–inspired solo flute piece, Scrivo in Vento (1991). Specifically, I forge narrative pathways by imagining the two tetrachords as active agents opposed in competition. Previous Scrivo analyses (Capuzzo 2002; Childs 2006) stress continuity by revealing Q-transforms and common-note voice leading between the tetrachords. While acknowledging such features, my analysis emphasises oppositional struggle by tracing the tetrachords as separate entities which cooperate and conflict as they manoeuvre to outdo each other.

The analysis advances three theses: (1) it guides listening to and reading Scrivo in a way which resonates with Carter's concern for the aesthetics of oppositional struggle, his choice of a sonnet as inspiration and his affinity for all-interval tetrachords; (2) it shows that music-analytical detail can be organised into dramatic narratives by (a) projecting dramatic roles onto categories asserted by a formal theory and (b) treating the formal theory's relations metaphorically as actions performed by each role as the musical work unfolds; and (3) it shows how detailed pc-set analysis can support a Heraclitean view of music: a flux of opposing forces seeking and resisting unity."

Feminist authors claim that many of the advertising messages are promoting stereotypical images of the genders. However, if in social sciences, gender stereotypes have been facilitated and enforced by religious ideologies, the connections between gender stereotypes in advertising and religious ideologies remain to be investigated. The purpose of this paper is to analyze these connections. Using the tools and methods of philosophy of communication, the paper attempts to emphasize a double discourse of advertising: an external one that derives from existing religious ideologies, and an internal one that borrows the structure and elements of modern religiosity. If the first one is enforcing the gender stereotypes, the second one is more innovative and less related to stereotypical images of genders. Abstract: In Western culture, as expressed in fiction and film, the master nar-rative concerning science and the pursuit of knowledge perpetuates the arche-type of the alchemist/scientist as sinister, dangerous, and possibly mad. Like all myths this story may appear simplistic but its recurrence suggests that it embodies complex ideas and suppressed desires and fears that each generation must work through. This paper explores some of the most influential exam-ples of such characterization, links them to contemporary correlatives of the basic promises of alchemy and suggests reasons for the continuing power of such images.

Charles Tilly's work as a historical sociologist and on states, social change and other topics has had powerful influence across the social sciences and social history, also having a large popular audience. Themes and issues in his work over time are explored, in particular his developing thinking about national states, macro and micro processes, stories and social change.

Near-death experiences have been described with a variety of forms and narratives. Different medical conditions leading to loss of consciousness or causing a restriction in the perceptive field have been related with the appearance of near-death experiences. A few literary narratives of these experiences are available, with fictional characters exposed to helplessness and despair during the impending death. A situation of near-death experience is described in the last part of the seventh chapter of an Albanian novel ‘The castle’ of Ismail Kadare. The last two pages of this chapter describe the confusion following the crash of a tunnel dug deep underground from Ottoman soldiers, which aimed to reach inside a besieged castle. Darkness-related hallucinations and restriction of cognitive field due to environmental factors will be responsible of the aftermath following the deliberate crash of the tunnel, caused from the castle inhabitants, after fierce fighting during the siege. A fictional description of these experiences and of the psychological and physical agony will complete the rest. Near-death moments and respective descriptions have been an important field of medicine, humanities and forensic sciences. Only some writers have hazarded into describing such personal experiences of despair and helplessness during the agony and impending death.
