Latin American and Spanish Theater

Keywords: Cannibalism, Sor Juana, Baroque discourse. Transubstantiation, Mexica sacrifices.  This essay examines the intersection between the translation / allegorical construction of indigenous alterity and the manifestation of a criollo agency in Sor Juana’s loas that precede the autos “El Cetro de José” (1692) and “El divino Narciso” (1690). Furthermore, it proposes that what has been called the emergence of criollo consciousness, or simply criollo agencies, can be defined a participatory yet differential series of practices and strategies of the letrado colonial elites who “based on assertions of American particularisms, sought on the one hand cultural and political authority vis-a-vis the theocratic and cultural universal order of the empire and, on the other, inscription or participation within that same order.”

The article offer a “backwards reading” resisting the urge to read Sor Juana as the progenitor of a nationalist consciousness or as a kind of “Latinamericanist antecedent to Marti.” Such “teleological” readings ignore the considerable historical evidence that would allow us to situate the “ ‘criollo’ consciousness” of Sor Juana and others within a long established colonial tradition. Moreover, this consciousness is ultimately one that aligns itself much more closely with an “imperial cultural community” than with notions of nascent nationalism that would not really take hold until much later. This essay shows how the sixteenth-century doctrinal conflicts over the status of the Eucharistic sacrifice offer a compelling context for reading the emergence of this baroque ‘criollo’ consciousness.

En este libro, las autoras estudian las carreras artísticas, las formas de organización, el trabajo creativo y las poéticas de seis compañías teatrales chilenas: La Puerta, Equilibrio precario, La Patogallina, Teatro La María, Teatro de Chile y La Peste. A partir de una perspectiva sociológica interdisciplinaria, el libro se funda en una investigación llevada a cabo en Santiago y Valparaíso entre 2007 y 2008, que comprende entrevistas, recopilación y análisis de diversas fuentes escritas, además de un análisis de las obras de los distintos grupos teatrales estudiados. Se propone así una reflexión sobre los procesos creativos desarrollados por las compañías, las lógicas de circulación de sus espectáculos a una escala nacional e internacional,  y sus estrategias de autogestión y legitimación a la luz de las políticas culturales de los gobiernos post-dictadura en Chile. Más ampliamente, el libro busca inscribir las prácticas y discursos artísticos de los grupos en el contexto histórico-político y en la compleja situación de la institucionalidad teatral local.

"Libro  "El pasado en el presente. Desplazamientos, cine y literatura" de Paula Rodríguez Marino fue editado por Prometeo entre sus novedades del año 2013.

Está conformado por  tres partes: "Nación, alteridad y tránsitos", "Posiciones en conflicto" y " La memoria airada" que reúnen  escritos sobre algunos exilios argentinos, memoria y representaciones cinematográficas de las consecuencias del Terrorismo de Estado.

Según Erika Fischer-Lichte (2014 [2004]), el “giro performativo” experimentado por el arte occidental a partir de los años sesenta se caracteriza por realizarse a través de acciones que son a un tiempo autorreferenciales y constitutivas de realidad. Se trata de un cambio de paradigma que, en el teatro, redefine la relación entre sujeto y objeto (espectador y actor) tanto como la relación entre materialidad y semioticidad (significado y significante) de los elementos de la puesta en escena. En esta presentación estudiamos el carácter performativo de la puesta en escena de El rumor de un incendio, de la compañía Lagartijas tiradas al sol. Esta obra, subtitulada «Documental escénico de las guerrillas en México», forma parte de un complejo proyecto de indagación sobre la insurgencia y la represión en los años 70. Esta realización escénica trabaja con la historia reciente de México no para mostrarla
 
(re-presentarla), sino para vivir la experiencia de su huella en la memoria de la comunidad formada por creadores y público. El análisis de la medialidad, materialidad, semioticidad y esteticidad del hecho teatral se confrontará con el concepto de «lección de Historia», propugnado por Rodolfo Usigli en los años cuarenta del siglo XX como modelo de teatro histórico, con el fin de observar la evolución del tratamiento de la memoria en el teatro mexicano.

Comedia Practices: September 15-17, 2022, UCLA

As part of LA Escena festival 2022, we will hold a symposium for scholars and practitioners aimed at exploring recent projects on performance practices, education, and outreach that seek to disseminate Hispanic early modern theatre within the US and beyond.

We will host a series of round table discussions where participants will present a 15-minute paper followed by ample time for questions and discussion.

We invite 250-word abstracts inquiring on comedia practices that focus on the artistic creation, staging the comedia, writing for the stage, adapting for the stage, recent translations, adaptations for different audiences and theatrical traditions, media formats, educational and pedagogical methodologies, and public engagement initiatives.

The deadline for abstract submission is 15 July, 2022.

On year 2004, the theater company Teatro la Peste, creates the  Encuentro de Teatro Porteño Independiente , as a direct alternative to the Valparaiso's Carnavales Culturales
, which years earlier had been promoted by the chilean government. The meeting, which is realized until today, looked forward to create a platform for the multiplicity of people related to the theater in the region and to democratize the access of the public, facing up the institutional discourse on culture in a city marked by it's status of "cultural capital of Chile". This article proposes different reading keys in order to get an insight of the tensions between both events

Collective Creation in Contemporary Performance examines collective and devised theatre practices internationally--with emphasis on Russia, Europe, and North America--from the late 20th century, into the present. Building upon the authors’ previous work, A History of Collective Creation, this volume situates contemporary collective creation in a tradition which emerged at the beginning of the twentieth century, and traces the aesthetic, social and political shifts that have marked this mode of theatre making, from mid-century manifestations as a theatrical expression of the New Left, to present-day devising practices.

This study investigated the relationship that may exist between cultureawareness and language proficiency. Eighty-four English-major EFL Saudi female students, studying at the Girls' College of Education in Onaizah (Qassim University), participated in the study. In addition, 17 EFL teachers and 13 experts were involved in analyzing the students' cultural needs. Four instruments were used to conduct it. First of all, the students' language proficiency level was assessed by means of a Language-proficiency Test (LT). Secondly, the students' cultureawareness was examined by means of a Culture-awareness Test (CT). Thirdly, the students' attitudes toward the target culture were investigated through an Attitude Scale. Finally, a Culture-awareness Needs Assessment Questionnaire (CNAQ) was utilized to assess cultural aspects necessary to raise EFL students' culture-awareness. All the study subjects (students, teachers and experts) responded to the fourth instrument. The analysis and discussion of data revealed that:

Le coup d'envoi du spectacle est l'Ayeo du canto jondo. Les trois vers de la copla racontent le malheur du fossoyeur qui doit lui-même enterrer sa fille. Le rideau s'ouvre sur le tableau des spectres drapés dans leur linceul, tel le bas-relief d'une tombe. Dans la scène centrale, le texte est projeté sur l'écran tandis que, dans le silence, l'officiant encorde le corps de la pénitente et fixe ses bras écartés sur une barre en bois. Cartographic and topographic mapping of the major satellites of the Outer Solar System has been in progress since the late 1980's, beginning with Voyager image data, and incorporating Galileo and recently Cassini imaging data as released to the public. Global image mosaics, based on cartographic control nets, have been produced for all these satellites. In addition, digital topographic maps have been produced for restricted areas on the Galilean, Uranian satellites, and Triton. Global topographic maps as well as limited high resolution topographic samples have been produced for the Saturnian satellites. These data have been used to investigate the properties of the icy outer layers (esp. Europa and Io), discrimination between competing hypotheses of geologic origins (on Triton, Ganymede, Europa, and Enceladus for example), and in some cases the thermal histories of these bodies (esp. Ganymede and Dione). These data are available on request for use in mapping and modelling of geologic and geophysical processes.

El Departamento de Lenguas y Literaturas Románicas de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad Masaryk de Brno celebrará los días 5 al 7 de octubre de 2017 un coloquio internacional con el título "Realidades y alusiones del texto teatral. Estudios sobre la dramaturgia contemporánea en España e Hispanoamérica". El coloquio coincidirá con la celebración del “Festival scénického čtení Specific” (Festival de Lecturas Dramatizadas Specific) , que ofrecerá al público checo lecturas dramatizadas de los siguientes autores españoles, alguno de los cuales se espera que esté presente en las actividades del coloquio: Rodrigo García, Victoria Szpunberg, Juan Mayorga, Alberto Conejero, Pablo Gisbert, Carlos Contreras Elvira, Angélica Liddell.
El objeto de estudio del coloquio serán los textos teatrales escritos o representados en los últimos años, con especial interés en aquellos que problematizan la relación entre texto y escena. Es llamativo que, en el cambio de paradigma estético que afronta el teatro de las últimas décadas y del que la teoría se ha ocupado con más prolijidad que uniformidad (Schechner, Sarrazac, Rancière, Nancy, Guénoun, Lehmann, Dubatti, Fischer-Lichte, Sánchez, Cornago, etc.), la interpretación del concepto de lo "real" (en oposición a lo artificial, pero también a lo ficticio, e incluso a lo inmaterial) adquiere una relevancia destacada. Fenómenos derivados de este cambio de paradigma, como el juego con la autorreferencialidad o la disolución del personaje dramático, cuestionan la doble realidad del teatro (significante y significado al mismo tiempo) y, por extensión, el papel de la dramaturgia (reino de la ficción) en la puesta en escena.
