This paper proposes an alternative reading for the legend of the lead coins found in the Maderero mine (Almodóvar del Río, Córdoba), for which the normally–accepted reading is okanaka. These coins are supposed to have been issued by the Turdetanian city of Κάνακα (Ptol. geogr. 2,4,12), usually located either in Alcolea del Río (Seville), if it corresponded, based on the resemblance of their names, with Canama (Plin. nat. 3,11)/ Canania (CIL II, 1074, or in Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva), as indicated by Ptolemy, on the frontier between Turdetania and Lusitania. The palaeographic problems presented by the traditional reading have led me to propose the alternative reading sabora which, though not without problems, has a greater palaeo-graphic coherence. This new reading would allow us to speculate that the lead coins were minted in another Turdetanian city, Sabora, the stipendiary city of the conventus Astigitanus (Plin. nat. 3,12), traditionally located on the Cerro de Sabora (Cañete la Real, Málaga), although some studies place it in Castillejos de Teba (Teba, Málaga). However, the latest news of the findings of these leads point back to the Almodóvar del Río area, the old Carbula, so probably it is a different city with the same name.

En este trabajo se propone una lectura alternativa para la leyenda de los plomos monetiformes hallados en la mina del Maderero (Almodovar del Río, Córdoba) para los que se acepta normalmente la lectura okanaka, que se supone que habrían sido emitidos por la ciudad turdetana de Κάνακα (Ptol. 2, 4, 12), localizada habitualmente bien en Alcolea del Río (Sevilla), si se correspondiera con Canama (Plin. 3, 11) / Canania (CIL II, 1074), o bien en Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva). Los problemas paleográficos que presenta la lectura tradicional me han llevado a proponer la lectura alternativa sabora, que aún sin estar libre de problemas, presenta una mayor coherencia paleográfica. La nueva lectura permitiría proponer que la responsable de la emisión de los plomos fuese otra ciudad turdetana, la Sabora estipendiaria del conventus astigitanus (Plin. 3, 12), localizada tradicionalmente en el Cerro de Sabora (Cañete la Real, Málaga), aunque los últimos estudios la sitúan en Castillejos de Teba (Teba, Málaga). No obstante, las últimas noticias de hallazgos de estos plomos vuelven a apuntar a la zona de Almodóvar del Río, la antigua Carbula, por lo que probablemente se trate de una ciudad diferente con el mismo nombre.

En aquest treball es proposa una lectura alternativa per a la llegenda dels ploms monetiformes trobats a la mina del Maderero (Almodovar del Río, Còrdova) pels quals s'accepta normalment la lectura okanaka, que se suposa haurien estat emesos per la ciutat turdetana de Κάνακα (Ptol. 2, 4, 12), localitzada habitualment bé a Alcolea del Río (Sevilla), si es correspongués amb Canama (Plin. 3, 11) / Canania (CIL II, 1074), o bé amb Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva).  Els problemes paleogràfics que presenta la lectura tradicional m'han portat a proposar la lectura alternativa Sabora, que tot i no estar lliure de problemes, presenta una major coherència paleogràfica. La nova lectura permetria proposar que la responsable de l'emissió dels ploms fos una altra ciutat turdetana, la Sabora estipendiària del conventus Astigitanus (Plin. 3, 12), localitzada tradicionalment al Cerro de Sabora (Cañete la Real, Màlaga), tot i que els darrers estudis la situen als Castillejos de Teba (Teba, Málaga). Tot i així, les darreres notícies de troballes d'aquests ploms tornen a apuntar a l'entorn d'Almodóvar del Río, la antiga Carbula, cosa que fa pensar que probablement es tracti d'una ciutat diferent amb el mateix nom.

Este artículo responde la frecuente pregunta sobre cómo se encontraron las soluciones para averiguar el sistema de escritura y el idioma del manuscrito medieval MS408, como se describió en el artículo de la revista Romance Studies titulado The Language and Writing System of MS408 (Voynich) Explained (Cheshire, 2019). Desvelar el enigma fue un proceso muy intuitivo, así que explicar cómo se hizo es un reto en sí mismo.

La autopsia ha permitido determinar la correcta lectura de su nombre: Sirasteiun, un antropónimo ibérico. Este monumento, además, es un elocuente ejemplo del proceso de latinización.

Los numerales ibéricos: ¿indoeuropeos, afrasiáticos, proto-vascos, urálicos, o mas bien eurasiático-altaicos?

Ensayo epigráfico-lingüístico comparativo donde se muestra cómo los dos únicos dados conocidos hasta la fecha con letras ibéricas en sus caras, de acuerdo a la hipótesis acrofónica (signos para el principal fonema del término usado para cada numeral), solo pueden ser explicados como tales desde las lenguas de la familia conocida como Altaica o Eurasiático-Altaica.

As already disclosed in “The Origin of the Indo-European Languages” (2012), each letter in PIE roots had a meaning and PIE roots actually were descriptions of the concepts that they referred to. In summary, PIE roots (each one of them with its own lexical meaning) had a CVC basic structure where each letter (the sound associated to each letter properly speaking) had its own general sense which, for consonants, changed to just the opposite, within the same concept, when placed at the end of the root. The concept that the word referred to was indicated by the initial consonant while the closing one determined the final meaning of the word.

For example, the PIE consonant usually represented as bh indicated “expansion, growth, external addition” as initial consonant while it meant “absorption, inwards addition” as final consonant. A related letter, p, conveyed a sense of “body, physical accumulation” at the beginning of the root which shifted to “physical lack / loss” .at the end of the root. The meaning of each letter is shown in a simple equivalence table in page 5 below.

This new document, focused only on PIE roots, explains the meaning of over 400 of them, adding more than 100 roots to the previous list and significantly improving the equivalence table included in the initial version.

Section 1 revisits the structure of the PIE words, indicating the meaning of each letter (sound) while Section 2 includes a list of “deciphered” PIE roots with some of their derivatives in old and modern languages.

Although the content of rock inscriptions in the most well-known epigraphies can vary, the function of most Iberian rock inscriptions appears to be votive or in general sacred, as is demonstrated by the identification of five abecedaries. The dimensions of the signs, many measuring less than two cm, invalidate most of the alternative interpretations, like territorial delimitation markers or other public usages. Other evidence that supports the interpretation of the votive role
of several Iberian rock inscriptions is that they share surfaces with Latin votive inscriptions, the use of the votive characteristic lexicon such as neitin iunstir, the use of repetitive formulas, and the use of unique elements such as the radial inscriptions with the formula kau(ŕ)go beřolé. But if they were votive, where are the names of divinities? In some cases, the repetition of the same element, like urdal that appears nine times in the Tarragón shelter, allows us to interpret this element, in most likelihood, as the name of a divinity. But, in the general, it’s difficult to differentiate personal names from the names of divinities. This work investigates this problem and puts forward a number of elements to assist in identifying the Iberian names of divinities within inscriptions.

The Manuscript and the Meandering Mind.
This article answers frequent inquiry about how the solutions were found for the writing system and language of Medieval manuscript MS408, as described in the peer-reviewed Romance Studies journal paper titled: The Language and Writing System of MS408 (Voynich) Explained. (Cheshire, 2019) As finding the solutions was largely intuitive, then explaining how it was done is something of a challenge in and of itself. The first detail is that no effort was invested in researching previous attempts by other scholars, working on the simple logic that they must already have covered all possible combinations of potential letter symbols and languages, given that so many had tried over so many years. It was therefore possible to reason that the solution required an intuitive approach. So, the starting point was to consider the manuscript afresh, with an open mind, unpolluted by the ideas of others or any prior linguistic rules. The metaphorical canvas was left entirely blank to allow complete freedom and flux in ideas and thought experimentation. The methodology was initially straightforward. All manuscript symbols were recorded, by examining every page, until no new symbols could be found. Relative counts of the symbols were then made, by using a couple of pages, in order to get an idea of their likely correspondence with letters in the Italic alphabet, based on the notion that the manuscript was probably southern European, given the visual information provided by the manuscript illustrations, such as the human figures, their clothing and their material culture. It was found that some of the symbols had far higher frequencies of occurrence than others and were therefore likely to be the vowels. They were also diminutive is size, suggesting vowels. However, there were more than five, so it was postulated that they probably represented pronuncial variants that are now distinguished by accents. Thus, it made sense to have two letter 'a' variants and three letter 'e' variants, with letters 'i', 'o' and 'u' as single symbols. Las monedas íbero-romanas bilingües de ARSE = SAGV y la etimología del nombre de la ciudad de Sagunto.

El topónimo ibérico, ARSE, está atestiguado en las monedas locales a partir del siglo III AC., y el latino de SAGUNTUM / SAGUNTINUM / SAGU, desde el siglo I AC. Estos son los dos nombres, uno ibérico (ARSE) y otro latino (SAGU) con el que fue conocida la hermosa urbe y puerto marítimo que hoy conocemos como Sagunto.

Aquest treball forma part del catàleg de l’exposició del MAC L’Enigma Iber i descriu les característiques principals de la llengua i l’escriptura ibèrica, així com algunes de les línies d’investigació més recents. Entre les que destaca l’avanç produït en la identificació del panteó ibèric a partir de les inscripcions votives rupestres, especialment les de la Cerdanya. Així com la identificació del sistema de numerals, que té correspondències clares amb els numerals bascos, cosa que quasi certifica que la llengua ibèrica i la basca estarien genèticament relacionades.

En aquest apartat es presenta de forma molt sintètica els escassos exemples d’inscripcions rupestres llatines de La Cerdanya. Entre les que destaca una inscripció d’Oceja on s’esmenten quatre individus que s'identifiquen com a quatorvirs –scriptum · est · IIII · viratum– que amb tota seguretat són una de les primeres generacions de magistrats de Iulia Lybica (Llívia)  a la  2ª meitat del s. I aC,  però  tres  dels quatre i els seus quatre pares encara porten noms ibèrics: Bella per dues vegades, Adinildir, Gaisco, Bastobles, Betepe[-] i Erdoild[ir], només un dels magistrats, Corneli(us), porta un nom llatí. Aquesta inscripció confirma que les elits ibèriques ceretanes van perpetuar el seu control sobre Iulia Lybica quan va esdevenir municipi romà.

Los 40 términos más estables determinados por Holman et al. (2008) de la “Lista de Swadesh” original de 100 voces del vocabulario nuclear básico que (salvo unos pocos excepcionales casos) no son adoptadas por familias de lenguas diferentes, y otras 23 voces de la Lista de Swadesh original, fueron reordenadas desde los términos más estables (no sustituibles por términos foráneos de familias diferentes) a los menos estables. Esta lista, estadísticamente, es igual de significativa que la lista original de Swadesh de 100 términos y su reordenamiento por voces más estables la convierte en una herramienta muy poderosa para las comparativas entre lenguas y familias. Si dos lenguas cualquieras comparadas con esta lista comparten (según Swadesh) más de un 36% de coincidencias, puede sostenerse que estuvieron emparentadas dentro de una misma familia, aunque tal parentesco sea remoto en el tiempo. Obviamente, mientras más alto sea el porcentaje de coincidencias (mejor si es por encima del 50%), más cercano será el parentesco.

La comparativa favorece con diferencia a las lenguas Transeurasiáticas-Altaicas (Túrquicas, Mongoles, Tungúsicas, Japónica y Coreánica) que ocupan más de un 80% de la comparativa, siguiéndole en orden frecuencial (con pocas diferencias en los porcentajes) las Dravidianas, Sino-Caucasianas, Kartvelianas, Urálicas, Yeniseanas, Sino-Tibetanas y en menor grado las Afrasiáticas. Puesto que es difícil (por no decir imposible) explicar tan elevado número de coincidencias del vocabulario básico de voces estables con términos de la macrofamilia Transeurasiática-Altaica como “préstamos” o producto del mero azar, la hipótesis de Michel Morván (1995-2002) de que el Euskara no es una lengua aislada y que, de hecho, sería una lengua Eurasiática muy antigua, parece más que probable.

Esta comparativa de voces estables, según las 40 voces más estables determinadas por Holman et al. (2008), y otras 23 de la Lista de Swadesh original, apuntan a un más que verosímil parentesco entre la lengua Euskara (y probablemente también la Ibera de acuerdo a los pocos términos iberos que hemos podido incluir) con la macrofamilia Transeurasiática-Altaica. Si el Pre-Proto-Euskara era una lengua Proto-Eurasiana, tal como sostiene Morvan, todo apunta a que esta se hallaba más cercana a las lenguas Transeurasiáticas-Altaicas que a las de las restantes familias eurasiáticas.

En cuanto al Ibero, si bien es imposible de momento hacer una comparativa de su vocabulario básico estable, hay suficientes indicios para considerar como verosímil una relación de parentesco con el Euskara, aunque remota (nunca como hermanas o como madre o hija una de la otra), lo que permite inferir, al menos como posibilidad, que igualmente se pueda incluir el Ibero dentro de la macrofamilia Transeurasiática-Altaica. De hecho, todo lo que mejor se ha podido determinar (casi hay consenso) sobre su morfo-tipología, fonosintáctica, afijaciones, formas verbales y léxico especializado (determinado por combinatoria interna y contexto favorable) encuentran las mejores explicaciones siempre —al igual que pasa con el Euskara— a través de las mismas lenguas de la macrofamilia Transeurasiática-Altaica, y en menor medida a través de algunas lenguas Caucasianas.

This paper provides more precise guidance and instruction with regard to the palaeographic method in translating manuscript MS408 (Ischia, Voynich). Manuscripts of antiquity typically require palaeographic interpretive techniques for the purpose of translation, because they include idiomatic abbreviations, unusual calligraphy, exotic language, unique letter symbols and so on, making them a challenge to read. Therefore, it is necessary to learn and understand the associated peculiarities of the MS408 language and writing system in order to arrive at reasonable translations.

A completely reconsidered view of Celtic linguistic prehistory in the light of newer insights into the PIE-related origin of Iberian, Basque and Paleo-European in general, their influence on the genesis of Celtic, and the geographic Sprachbund aspects of the labialization of western PIE languages. Preface At last the thesis of the western ("Iberian", i.e. in present-day Portugal, Galicia and central Spain) origin of (QU-)Celtic is gaining little by little the more general acceptance it should have received years ago. The reason being, among other factors, the fact that the classic Central-European hypothesis is wrought with so many contradictory and factually contradicted consequences that it is no longer tenable as such. The realization that languages are not as closely correlated with prehistoric material 'cultures' as was thought traditionally, as well as the relatively recent acceptance of the role of navigation in the Mediterranean in early Neolithic migrations, thousands of years before e.g. the Phoenicians or the Greeks, has also played a role. Nonetheless, newer insights also seem to indicate that the Central-European theory has a rational basis, albeit only for a much later stage of Celtic, thus turning the 'either-or' discussion into a matter of chronology. In this paper I will not go into the discussion about the plausibility or veracity of the western (Iberian-Peninsular) origin of (QU-)Celtic, but use it as a starting point for an attempt to reconstruct the complete story of Celtic in a much wider framework that includes the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Façade, as well as later developments in Central Europe and beyond. So, I will concentrate on the more 'macroscopic' aspects, both chronologically and geographically, starting from the 8 th millennium BCE in the Kirghiz steppes, and then on to the eastern Mediterranean, and the Adriatic realm and its wider SE Central European * M.Sc. in electro-mechanical and nuclear engineering (University of Gent, Belgium), M.Sc. in nuclear engineering (M.I.T., Cambridge MA, USA) and Dr. App. Sc.

A concise description of the linguistic situation in the Iberian Peninsula from ancient epigraphs and documentation. The reasons which led to proposing a division of the peninsula into an Indo-European and a non-Indo-European area are discussed. An evaluation is made of the linguistic materials belonging to each of these zones, in order to arrive at the conclusion that the languages of the Indo-European zone were not limited to Celtic, nor those of the non-Indo-European zone to Iberian.
The classification of Lusitanian and Tartessian is discussed, onomastic materials of substrata languages in Andalusia and Catalonia are evaluated, and finally some aspects of the relationship between Basque-Aquitanian and Iberian are addressed.

The second part of the ebook after the Tocharian section was written by Michael Schmidt and taken from his original writings. Since winter 2017 he has returned to Albania from Utrecht to retire. He has kindly let me re publish his work here to publish as a free e book. It's not possible to date a language using genetics or historical models. These historic models were sometimes biased towards written history, which isn't always accurate. We have searched maps to find consistency between certain types of archaeological sites and the words used to name them. We have found some consistency between Afro Asiatic words and different archaeological site types in Britain. There are other associations between different types of Celtic word and other archaeological sites, but we can't tell if the language used was actually Celtic, or a predecessor to Celtic which was predecessor to Celtic. The first Neolithic culture in England was the Windmill Hill culture, which wasn't connected to the earlier spread of Neolithic technology from Dingle in South West Ireland. The province of Munster provides an important key to understanding the spread of Celtic identity. There was Mesolithic settlement in Munster, and then early Neolithic finds were discovered on the Dingle Peninsula. It is believed that from here, the Neolithic technology went to Connaught, then to the Irish Sea and to Wales and the Isle of Man. This is consistent with the spread of Gaelic, the most archaic Gaelic dialects are spoken in Munster, alongside the most Ogham stones. The Isle of Man also has a lot of Ogham stones, so we can assume an early Irish influence. There are also Ogham stones in Wales, and evidence that West Wales and Anglesey were historically Irish, implying that the Goidelic languages had a lot to do with the founding of Celtic elements in West Britain. The spread of Bronze Age technology also went from the copper mines in Munster, to the gold mines elsewhere in Ireland, and to the copper and gold mines in Wales and parts of England. There is a very clear west to east movement of trade and technology, which is not the same cultural matrix as the east to west spread of the Neolithic via England. The Windmill Hill culture was concentrated in Essex and Norfolk, but this also spread to South West England, an example is Wor Barrow in Dorset. *Wor or *war is a root that can be connected to the Finnish word for mountain, vuori, and the Afro Asiatic word *war-which means to grow or increase. This word has symbolic connotations and seems connected to the Neolithic beliefs about the dead and the way that they nourished the land.

In this work I analyse five Iberian inscriptions of three rocks from Osona, two from L'Esquirol at the banks of the Ter river, and one from Sant Martí de Centelles in the limit with the Vallés. The inscriptions respond to the expected pattern of votive inscriptions, with alphabets, repetitive elements and coherent morphs, as in La Cerdanya. The first rock of L'Esquirol contains a quasi-complete non-dual alphabet, which certifies the kutukiѓbitatiko sequence as a characteristic beginning. In the rest highlights the identification heading the inscriptions of already known elements, such as sibanetin, balkar, and aloѓberi, which makes it plausible to consider these elements as divinities, rather than as anthroponyms. However, the elements that follow them are more obscure, but could fit into the category of deity epithets, most likely descriptive, accompanied by the er / ir morphs, such as gais, which appears as both isolated, and following aloѓberi. In Sant Martí de Centelles, labeѓei, appears accompanied by the morph ku, which is distinctive to place-names, and could be identifying the community in which the divinity was protective. And in the second one from L’Esquirol, taѓbaiter, could be identifying a river divinity, taѓ, if the relation of bai or bait(e) with the concept of river was confirmed.

En aquest treball analitzo cinc inscripcions ibèriques de tres roques d’Osona, dues de L’Esquirol a la riba del Ter i una de Sant Martí de Centelles ja a tocar del Vallés. Les inscripcions responen al patró esperat de les inscripcions votives, amb abecedaris, elements repetitius i morfs coherents, tal com passa a la Cerdanya. La primera roca de L'Esquirol conté un abecedari no-dual quasi complet, que certifica a la seqüència kutukiѓbitatiko com a començament característic. A la resta destaca la identificació encapçalant les inscripcions d’elements ja prèviament coneguts, com sibanetin, balkar i aloѓberi, cosa que fa plausible considerar aquests elements com a divinitats, més que no pas com a antropònims. En canvi, els elements que els segueixen són més obscurs, però podrien encaixar en la categoria d’epítets de divinitats, alguns probablement descriptius, acompanyats dels morfs er/ir, com gais, que apareix tant isolat, com acompanyant aloѓberi. A la de Sant Martí de Centelles, labeѓei, que apareix acompanyat del morf ku, propi de topònims, podria estar indicant la comunitat de la que la divinitat era protectora. I a la segona de L’Esquirol, taѓbaiter, podria estar identificant a una divinitat fluvial, taѓ, si es confirmés la relació de bai o bait(e) amb el concepte de riu.

En este trabajo analizo cinco inscripciones ibéricas de tres rocas de Osona, dos de L'Esquirol en la rivera del Ter y una de Sant Martí de Centelles ya a tocar del Vallés. Las inscripciones responden al patrón esperado de las inscripciones votivas, con abecedarios, elementos repetitivos y morfos coherentes, tal como ocurre en la Cerdanya. La primera roca de L'Esquirol contiene un abecedario no-dual casi completo, que certifica a la secuencia kutukiѓbitatiko como comienzo característico. En el resto destaca la identificación encabezando las inscripciones de elementos ya previamente conocidos, como sibanetin, balkar y aloѓberi, lo que hace plausible considerar estos elementos como divinidades, más que como antropónimos. En cambio, los elementos que les siguen son más oscuros, pero podrían encajar en la categoría de epítetos de divinidades, algunos probablemente descriptivos, acompañados de morfos er / ir, como gais, que aparece tanto aislado, como acompañando a aloѓberi. En la de Sant Martí de Centelles, labeѓei, que aparece acompañado del morfo ku, propio de topónimos, podría estar indicando la comunidad de la que la divinidad era protectora. Y en la segunda de L'Esquirol, taѓbaiter, podría estar identificando a una divinidad fluvial, taѓ, de confirmarse la relación de bai o bait (e) con el concepto de río.

La dos únicas voces Euskaras para 'arar, surcar la tierra' que no han sido explicadas por ninguna otra lengua conocida son iruli y exar. Pues bien, iruli se puede relacionar con lenguas de la macrofamilia Transeurasiática-Altaica1 y exar con lenguas Afrasiáticas.2 Por otra parte, el término euskara para 'sembrar', erein, erin, erain, no creo que sea una mera contracción de eragin "promover, sembrar" que a su vez sería un factitivo de egin 'hacer' como sugiere Michel Morvan, más bien podría ser al revés, siendo eragin una forma verbal derivada de erain, aglutinada con egin, por ejemplo. Tanto erein, erin, erain como iruli podrían en realidad derivar o compartir una proto-lengua ancestral con algunos de los mismos términos transeurasiáticos-altaicos para 'surco, surcar', tales como *ī́ŕu, *iru-n, *ir- o *ìráŋ, que darían origen a las citadas formas euskéricas para 'arar' y ‘sembrar’. Es decir, que el mismo concepto transeurasiático-altaico para ‘surcar la tierra’ los pre-proto-euskaras lo usarían para la creación de ambas actividades agrícolas de 'arar' y 'sembrar', tan estrechamente relacionadas entre si, y esto sería señal inequívoca de que adquieren el conocimiento de 'sembrar' y 'arar' la tierra de una misma fuente eurasiática altaica, aunque más tarde recibieran otro término (exar) para 'arar' mediante el contacto con pueblos neolíticos afrasiáticos,3 quizá por vía bereber o chádica, aunque sin descartar la vía de los mismos granjeros agricultores que desde el Creciente Fértil, ya sea pasando por Anatolia o directamente por navegación costera e insular, llegan a la península ibérica hace unos 7800 años, dado que muy probablemente sería el mismo Afrasiático su idioma principal.

Parece claro que al no tomar los pre-proto-euskaras de los afrasiáticos un término para 'sembrar', sino otro más para 'arar' -quizá por adoptar de estos un sistema de arado diferente- queda claro que la idea de 'sembrar' y de 'arar', por tanto, la agricultura en si misma, la adoptan por vía transeurasiática-altaica. De modo que, una de dos, o bien la lengua que podríamos denominar Pre-Proto-Euskara se origina en una zona muy cercana a los lugares donde tradicionalmente han vivido los pueblos que hablaban lenguas transeurasiáticas-altaicas desde hace aproximadamente unos 7700 años (fecha estimada para el origen del Proto-Altaico), no migrando hacia el occidente hasta después de que en dichas regiones se conociera la agricultura, o bien la lengua que llegó a Iberia con los granjeros provenientes de Turquía o Anatolia pertenecía a la misma macrofamilia Transeurasiática-Altaica y no indoeuropea como aún proponen la mayoría de los actuales arqueólogos y lingüistas, aunque para el citado paleolingüista francés Michel Morvan está claro que esos primeros granjeros agricultores no eran indoeuropeos, por mucho que esta siga siendo la tesis más seguida y convertida ya casi en dogma académico. Morvan se basa en otros términos euskéricos relacionados con las actividades de los granjeros y ganaderos (términos para ‘vaca’, ‘buey’, ‘cabra’, ‘puerco’, ‘oveja’) que no hallan explicación alguna como adopciones lingüísticas desde el indoeuropeo, sino que sus mejores correlatos se encuentran en otras lenguas eurasiáticas no indoeuropeas4 y a los que podríamos añadir también otro término como el Proto-Euskara *a=hari ‘oveja, carnero’, cuyo mejor correlato hallamos en este caso en el Proto-Afrasiático: *hVr- ‘oveja, cabra’ y en el Proto-Afrasiático: *ʔaruy-.5

Si se llegara a demostrar algún día que la lengua que llega a Iberia con los primeros granjeros anatólicos era realmente indoeuropea, entonces solo cabría optar por la primera hipótesis, es decir, que el Pre-Proto-Euskara se origina en una zona muy cercana a los lugares donde tradicionalmente han vivido los pueblos hablantes de lenguas transeurasiáticas-altaicas, y lo mismo de no resultar la lengua de los granjeros neolíticos indoeuropea sino afrasiática, de nuevo la hipótesis primera sobre un origen altaico o muy cercano al mundo altaico de la lengua Pre-Proto-Euskara seguiría siendo la mejor explicación. Dicho de otro modo, tan solo con aceptar que la lengua de los granjeros neolíticos anatólicos que llega a la península ibérica hace unos 7800 años era transeurasiática-altaica no sería necesario buscar la matria de la lengua Euskara en las regiones nativas de las lenguas transeurasiáticas-altaicas, ni en un lugar cercano a estas, puesto que en este caso el Pre-Proto-Esukera sería una lengua esencialmente transeurasiática-altaica que se mezclaría con la paleoeuropea proto-eurasiática (posiblemente el mismo Eurasiático/Nostrático o una descendiente) que ya se hablaría en Iberia al menos desde el Mesolítico. Esto explicaría las semejanzas morfo-tipológicas, gramaticales y léxicas (aunque pocas) entre el Euskara y el Ibero, pareciendo la segunda mucho más cercana a las lenguas altaicao-túrquicas que a la misma Euskara, quizá por tratarse de una rama altaica que en su paso por Europa a través de culturas como las de Unetice, de los Túmulos y de los Campos de Urna, adopta parte del léxico de las culturas europeas locales hablantes de antiguas lenguas pre-indoeuropeas e indoeuropeas mismas, antes de arribar a la península en torno al 1200 a. C., aunque pienso que no debería descartarse un posible arribo en fecha anterior, quizá junto con algunos de los grupos con ancestría esteparia de eurasiáticos-altaicos (antiguos eurasiáticos del norte) que llegaron hace unos 4500 años.

This version presents a complete change of my views on the origin of Iberian and Basque. In the past I still believed in a rather direct descent from members of the post-LGM (last glacial maximum) agglutinative language continuum of the peri-arctic/peri-glacial belt. Now, after taking into account more and newer information, this was becoming untenable, and I have reached the conclusion that there was an intermediate step via the 'grandfather' of Proto-Indo-European, which might be regarded as a southern outcrop or 'associated member' of that language continuum in the part that straddles the Urals. In a way, this implies, although not necessarily, that this 'grandfather of PIE' ('avus-PIE') would take the place of the hypothetical Indo-Uralic, and that it might also encompass some non-negligible commonalities with Altaic/Turkic, besides the Uralic ones, even though these may not have been transmitted to all of the descendants of 'avus-PIE' but only or mainly to the easternmost ones. I hereby unambiguously retract my previous basic view as such, even though I believe considerable parts of the reasoning and information is still valid. As this newer view is based on the general theory exposed in my paper 'The Grandfather, the Uncle and the Cousin of Proto-Indo-European', I reproduce important parts of it, just as I did in another paper 'Celtic and the Adriatic' (all available on www.academia.edu). The territory involved by the evidence of Palaeohispanic Southwestern scripts is  divided into three main areas that show different caracteristics regarding the density and  quality of their archaeological contexts. The South of Portugal, the region which has provided
the highest number of epigraphs, shows a limited number of well-documented contexts for the  large amount of stone stelae found from the 18th century; Western Andalusia is characterized  by the extreme scarcity of testimonies, in contrast to other evidence, such as the importance of  Phoenician epigraphy or the strength of the Early Iron Age societies in this area; the region of  Extremadura shows a variety of situations in a background that, thanks to recent researches,  has become something more dynamic. The study of these three areas allows us to make a  general proposal for the chronology of the Southwestern Script, as well as to raise some notes  concerning its social and cultural uses.

In this article, I defend that some bo sign variants are in fact voiceless variants of the ta sign. In addition to the improvement of the dual system internal coherence, this change modifies the reading of almost a hundred Iberian inscriptions. The chronology of the dual inscriptions seems to indicate that the dual system may be the original North-Oriental (Levantine) Iberian writing system. This system was created at the end of de 5th century BC in some point at the coast of the north of Catalonia and the south of Languedoc-Roussillon, having being spread out towards the south along the coast.The exact reason of its substitution in favor of the non-dual system among the Iberians at the beginning of de 2nd century BC is not well known, but it seems to be a direct consequence of the Roman conquest of the Iberian territory. Besides, the use of a dual system in Celtiberian is proved by the presence of dualities in some Celtiberian texts. This fact modifies the chronology of the introduction of writing among the Celtiberians.

En este artículo se revisa desde un punto de vista crítico la hipótesis del ibérico como lengua vehicular, recogiendo y ampliando los problemas ya identificados por muchos otros investigadores. Esta hipótesis fue planteada por Javier de Hoz hace unos veinte años, aunque en trabajos recientes la ha argumentado de nuevo. En esta hipótesis se propone que la lengua ibérica sólo sería la lengua vernácula de los pueblos ibéricos del SE de la península ibérica, mientras que el resto de pueblos ibéricos sólo la habrían usado como lengua vehicular de comunicación interétnica vinculada a las actividades del comercio. También recientemente, esta teoría ha sido reivindicada como válida por Joseba Lakarra y usada como argumento principal en contra de las posibles relaciones entre el sistema de numerales ibérico y el sistema de numerales vasco, circunstancia que en último término ha motivado este trabajo.

This paper presents the hypothesis that identifies three texts as Iberian nondual abecedaries on the basis of a statistical irregularity. They consist of one considerable long segment, but almost all of the signs are different. The texts identified as abecedaries are a rock inscription from L’Esquirol and the two texts from the spindle whorl from Can Rodon. Two of the texts begin with the same sequence, kutukiŕbitatiko, a fact that also identifies other texts that begin with the same sequence as non-dual abecedaries: these are an unpublished text on rock in Latour de Carol and probably a short text on a dolium from Val de Alegre. The sequence kutu can also be reconstructed at the Ger abecedary and at the new dual one from Latour de Carol making plausible the hypothesis that the familiar element kutur / kutun was related to it and therefore the meaning of the kutu root was originally in the semantic field of writing.

"En aquest treball es presenta la hipòtesi que identifica tres textos com a abecedaris ibèrics no-duals pel fet de presentar la irregularitat estadística de constar d’un sol segment prou llarg que no presenta cap, o quasi cap, signe repetit. Els textos identificats com a abecedaris són una inscripció rupestre de L’Esquirol (Osona, Barcelona) i els dos textos de la tortera de Can Rodon (Cabrera de Mar, Maresme, Barcelona). Dos dels textos comencen per la seqüència kutukiѓbitatiko, fet que permet identificar també com a abecedaris no-duals altres textos que comencen per la mateixa seqüència: un text rupestre inèdit de la Tor de Querol (Cerdanya, Pirineus Orientals) i probablement un text d’un doli de Val de Alegre (Azaila, Terol). En este trabajo se presenta la hipótesis que identifica tres textos como abecedarios ibéricos no-duales por el hecho de presentar la irregularidad estadística de constar de un solo segmento suficientemente largo que no presenta ningún, o casi ningún signo repetido. Los textos identificados como abecedarios son una inscripción rupestre de L’Esquirol (Osona, Barcelona), y los dos textos de la fusayola de Can Rodon (Cabrera de Mar, Maresme, Barcelona). Dos de los textos empiezan por la secuencia kutukiѓbitatiko, hecho que permite identificar también como abecedarios no-duales otros textos que empiezan por la misma secuencia: un texto rupestre inédito de Latour-de-Carol (Cerdagne, Pyrénées-Orientales) y probablemente un texto de un dolium de Val de Alegre (Azaila, Teruel). La secuencia kutu también se puede reconstruir en el abecedario rupestre de Ger (Cerdanya, Girona)  y en el abecedario dual inédito de Latour-de-Carol, lo que hace plausible plantear la hipótesis de que el frecuente elemento kutur / kutun tuviera relación con ella y que por tanto el significado de la raíz kutu se encontrara originalmente en el campo semántico de la escritura.

És unànimement acceptat que va existir una escriptura paleohispànica original, probablement adaptada de l'escriptura fenícia, que explicaria les característiques comunes de les diferents escriptures paleohispàniques. En canvi, son diverses les hipòtesis sobre el seu desenvolupament, que pretenen explicar les característiques específiques que presenten aquestes escriptures. Aquesta tesi consta de sis articles que posen de manifest diverses característiques específiques de les escriptures paleohispàniques que permeten proposar un nou model que explicaria millor com es van desenvolupar. En el primer article vaig proposar una millor definició del sistema dual de l’escriptura ibèrica nord-oriental, eliminant les dualitats a les labials, per concentrar el seu ús a les oclusives dentals i velars. En el segon article vaig justificar estadísticament l’existència d’una variant del sistema dual a la zona edetana que afegeix a les dualitats habituals, noves dualitats per a les vocals i algunes consonants contínues, com a mínim s i ŕ. En el tercer article vaig identificar com a abecedaris nord-orientals no-duals un grup d’inscripcions que estan formades per signes diferents i que superen el llindar que estadísticament descarta l’atzar i que es calcula en 12 signes. En el quart article vaig identificar un sistema dual a l’escriptura ibèrica sud-oriental que inclou les oclusives dentals i velars i també algunes consonants contínues, com a mínim n, ś i ŕ. En el cinquè article vaig analitzar l’escriptura del sud-oest des del punt de vista combinatori, anàlisi que confirma que aquesta escriptura no amaga cap variant dual i que en la major part dels casos, les propostes de consens pels valors dels signes conflictius són correctes i que a diferència de les escriptures ibèriques existia una sèrie de signes sil•làbics addicional a les tres sèries tradicionals, dental, velar i labial. Finalment, en el sisè article, he proposat un nou model genealògic per les escriptures paleohispàniques que expliqui coherentment les importants diferències que hi ha entre l'escriptura ibèrica nord-oriental i la sud-oriental. Un dels punts clau d’aquesta proposta és considerar que l'escriptura paleohispànica original només disposaria de signes sil•làbics per tres vocals, a, e/i i o/u, però, probablement, sense cap vocal explícita. Les adaptacions posteriors són les que van crear els signes vocàlics i els signes sil•làbics addicionals, i en realitzar-se de forma independent per a llengües diferents, els criteris seguits no van ser iguals i van crear les dues famílies d’escriptures paleohispàniques.

Es unánimemente aceptado que existió una escritura paleohispánica original, probablemente adaptada de la escritura fenicia, que explicaría las características comunes de las diferentes escrituras paleohispánicas. En cambio, son diversas las hipótesis sobre su desarrollo, que pretenden explicar las características específicas que presentan estas escrituras. Esta tesis consta de seis artículos que ponen de manifiesto varias características específicas de las escrituras paleohispánicas que permiten proponer un nuevo modelo que explicaría mejor cómo se desarrollaron. En el primer artículo propuse una mejor definición del sistema dual de la escritura ibérica nororiental, eliminando las dualidades en las labiales, para concentrar su uso en las oclusivas dentales y velares. En el segundo artículo justifiqué estadísticamente la existencia de una variante del sistema dual en la zona edetana que añade a las dualidades habituales, nuevas dualidades para las vocales y algunas consonantes continuas, como mínimo s y ŕ. En el tercer artículo identifiqué como abecedarios nororientales no-duales un grupo de inscripciones que están formadas por signos diferentes y que superan el umbral que estadísticamente descarta el azar y que se calcula en 12 signos. En el cuarto artículo identifiqué un sistema dual en la escritura ibérica suroriental que incluye las oclusivas dentales y velares y también algunas consonantes continuas, como mínimo n, ś y ŕ. En el quinto artículo analicé la escritura del sudoeste desde el punto de vista combinatorio, análisis que confirma que esta escritura no esconde ninguna variante dual y que en la mayor parte de los casos las propuestas de consenso para los valores de los signos conflictivos son correctas y que a diferencia de las escrituras ibéricas existía una serie de signos silábica adicional a las tres series tradicionales, dental, velar y labial. Finalmente, en el sexto artículo, he propuesto un nuevo modelo genealógico para las escrituras paleohispánicas que explique coherentemente las importantes diferencias que existen entre la escritura ibérica nororiental y la sudoriental. Uno de los puntos clave de esta propuesta es considerar que la escritura paleohispánica original sólo dispondría de signos silábicos para tres vocales, a, e/i y o u, pero, probablemente, sin ninguna vocal explícita. Las adaptaciones posteriores son las que crearon los signos vocálicos y los signos silábicos adicionales, y al realizarse de forma independiente para lenguas diferentes, los criterios seguidos no fueron iguales y crearon las dos familias de escrituras paleohispánicas.

It is unanimously accepted that there existed an original Paleohispanic script, probably adapted from the Phoenician script, which would explain the common features of the different Paleohispanic scripts. Instead, there are several hypotheses about its development, which seek to explain the specific characteristics that these scripts present. This dissertation consists of six articles that reveal several specific characteristics of the Paleohispanic scripts that allow to propose a new model that would explain better how they were developed. In the first article, I proposed a better definition of the dual system of the north-eastern Iberian writing, eliminating the dualities in the labials, to concentrate its use in dental and velar stop consonants. In the second article, I statistically justified the existence of a variant of the dual system in the Edetan zone that adds to the usual dualities, new dualities for the vowels and some continuous consonants, at least s and ŕ. In the third article, I identified as non-dual north-eastern abecedaries a group of inscriptions that are formed by different signs and that surpass the threshold that statistically discards chance and that is calculated in 12 signs. In the fourth article, I identified a dual system in south-eastern Iberian writing that includes dental and velar stop consonants and also some continuous consonants, at least n, ś and ŕ. In the fifth article, I analysed the south-western writing from the combinatorial point of view, an analysis that confirms that this writing does not hide any dual variant and that in most cases the consensus proposals for the values of the conflicting signs are correct and that unlike the Iberian writings there existed a series of syllabic signs in addition to the three traditional series, dental, velar and labial. Finally, in the sixth article, I have proposed a new genealogical model for the paleohispanic writings that coherently explains the important differences that exist between the north-eastern Iberian writing and the south-eastern Iberian writing. One of the key points of this proposal is to consider that the original paleohispanic writing would only have syllabic signs for three vowels, a, e/i and o/u, but, probably, without any explicit vowel. The later adaptations are those that created the vowel signs and the additional syllabic signs, and when performed independently for different languages, the criteria followed were not the same and created the two families of paleohispanic writings.

This paper presents the new reading of the Joncosa Iberian inscription after the restoration process. The length of this text is exceptional, there are near 350 signs spread over ten lines, especially because the inscription was made over a gray ceramic vase before the heating. This text does not match any of the known models of Iberian inscriptions. Despite his length, the style of this text is closer to the short texts over ceramic, personal objects and steles, than to the large texts over lead plaques.

The restoration in 2011 of Yatova's lead plaque F.20.1 eliminated the patina that had prevented the correctly reading the oldest text of the face A. In this lead, two texts in the form of a palimpsest coexist in the face A, but fortunately neither the preparation of the lead, before making the second text, nor the second text, removed the strokes of the oldest text. This text had already been identified, but both Fletcher and Untermann identified only isolated fragments with many doubts about the reading. The new autopsy confirms that the oldest text of the palimpsest consists of eight lines, it can be read almost entirely and becomes one of the longest unitary texts conserved with 181 signs. The text has an evident administrative or accounting content, since the śalir element appears multiple times, as well as various metrological expressions, and elements that end with the morpheme ka, that occur at regular intervals. However, the text is not completely regular and these elements are interrelated following various schemes.

En aquest plom conviuen a la cara A dos textos en forma de palimpsest, però afortunadament, ni la preparació del plom abans de realitzar el segon text, ni el segon text, van eliminar els traços del text més antic. Aquest text ja s’havia identificat, però tant Fletcher com Untermann identificaven fragments aïllats amb molts dubtes de lectura. La nova autòpsia confirma que el text més antic del palimpsest consta de vuit línies, es pot llegir en quasi la seva totalitat i passa a ser un dels textos unitaris més llargs conservats amb 181 signes. El text té un evident contingut administratiu o comptable, ja que l’element śalir apareix múltiples vegades, així com diverses expressions metrològiques i elements que acaben pel morf ka que apareixen a intervals regulars. Tot i així, el text no es completament regular i aquests elements s’interrelacionen seguint diversos esquemes.

La nueva autopsia confirma que el texto más antiguo del palimpsesto consta de ocho líneas, se puede leer en casi su totalidad y pasa a ser uno de los textos unitarios más largos conservados con 181 signos. El texto tiene un evidente contenido administrativo o contable, ya que el elemento śalir aparece múltiples veces, así como diversas expresiones metrológicas y elementos que acaban por morfo ka que aparecen en intervalos regulares. Sin embargo, el texto no es completamente regular y estos elementos se interrelacionan siguiendo diversos esquemas.

El filológo Juán Collado Cañas ha divulgado en los medios de prensa1 una nueva hipótesis para el origen etimológico del nombre latino Urso usado en las monedas de la antigua Osuna, pero que la forma de transcribir el nombre latino de OSUNA sería URSA, para el cual postula un origen vasco, a través de una voz del vasco moderno: Urtza 'cantidad de agua', que Collado, a través de la forma principal, Urtsu o Urtzu ("Acuoso, aguanoso, aguado; húmedo; jugoso. "Aquaticus" Urt II 228. "Aquoso" Lar y Añ. "Aguanoso, húmedo, lleno de agua, ezea, urtsua" Ib. "Lur urtsua, tèrre aqueuse, qui contient, retient un excès d'eau.")2 interpreta como «Tierra de lagunas», y justifica en el hecho de que un lugar al norte de Osuna ha sido recientemente bautizado con ese mismo nombre por haber en los alrededores tierras con lagunas.

Este artículo es una análisis crítico de dicha hipótesis la cual considero errónea.

The identification of the dual system of the Celtiberian script was carried out in 2004 as a result of the revision of the dual system of the north-eastern Iberian script, which implied the change of value of some variants of the bo sign that became complex variants of the ta sign. In these last fifteen years various works have consolidated their existence, but they have also brought up certain apparent contradictions between Iberian and Celtiberian epigraphic practices regarding the use of the dual system. In this paper I will review some of these questions from the experience of the study of the Iberian dual system and from a fundamentally palaeographic point of view. Some of the topics analysed will be the confusion that still exists between some variants of ta sign, such as variants of the bo sign in Cortono's bronze, the distinction of simple and complex variants of the ke sign in Luzaga's bronze and the role of the variants of the ti and to sign at the origin of the western Celtiberian script and that of the m sign at the origin of the eastern Celtiberian script.

La identificación del sistema dual de la escritura celtibérica se realizó en 2004 como consecuencia de la revisión del sistema dual de la escritura ibérica nororiental, que implicaba el cambio de valor algunas variantes del signo bo que pasaban a ser variantes complejas del signo ta. En estos últimos quince años diversos trabajos han consolidado su existencia, pero también han hecho aflorar ciertas aparentes contradicciones entre las prácticas epigráficas ibéricas y celtibéricas referentes al uso del dual. En este trabajo revisaré algunas de estas cuestiones desde la experiencia del estudio del sistema dual ibérico y desde un punto de vista fundamentalmente paleográfico. Algunos de los temas analizados serán la confusión aún existente entre algunas variantes de ta, como variantes de bo en el bronce de Cortono, la distinción de las variantes simples y complejas del signo ke en el bronce de Luzaga y el papel que juegan las variantes del signo ti i to en el origen de la escritura celtibérica occidental y la del signo m en el origen de la escritura oriental.

La identificació del sistema dual de l'escriptura celtibèrica es va realitzar el 2004 com a conseqüència de la revisió del sistema dual de l'escriptura ibèrica nord-oriental, que implicava el canvi de valor d’algunes variants del signe bo que passaven a ser variants complexes del signe ta. En aquests darrers quinze anys diversos treballs han consolidat la seva existència, però també han fet aflorar certes aparents contradiccions entre les pràctiques epigràfiques ibèriques i celtibèriques referents a l'ús del dual. En aquest treball revisaré algunes d'aquestes qüestions des de l'experiència de l'estudi del sistema dual ibèric i des d'un punt de vista fonamentalment paleogràfic. Alguns dels temes analitzats seran la confusió encara existent entre algunes variants de ta, com a variants de bo al bronze de Cortono, la distinció de les variants simples i complexes del signe ke al bronze de Luzaga i el paper que juguen les variants del signe ti i to en l'origen de l'escriptura celtibèrica occidental i la del signe m en l’origen de l'escriptura oriental.

There are a number of facts within the field of Indo-European that are explained by theories often limited to sub-domains but hard to unify in a general theory of PIE: e.g. Germanic and Anatolian, not to mention conflicting theories that seem almost impossible to reconcile (Kurgan hypothesis, Anatolian hypothesis, Continuity Theory…). In recent times, various authors (e.g. G. Forni) have noticed that some neighboring languages, which have traditionally been considered as non-IE, might be -in some way or other -of IE stock as well, e.g. Etruscan, Basque, Iberian. Note that for quite some time Anatolian IE was also considered as non-IE or as a parallel branch of PIE (Sturtevant's Indo-Hittite hypothesis). And then there is the matter of the relationship with Uralic (e.g. the Indo-Uralic hypothesis).

This paper aims to summarize the state of the research on the legends of Iberian coins. The legends mainly identify toponyms, anthroponyms, value marks and issue marks. These elements can appear isolated, accompanied by morphemes or in multiple composition or combination between them.

Reveladora evidencia documental referida en unos antiguos textos latinos de un autor toledano, originario de Tesalónica, Grecia, podría confirmar la teoría de que la lengua de los antiguos íberos pertenecía a la macrofamilia de lenguas aglutinantes eurasiáticas altaico/túrquicas.

O conhecimento da língua antiga falada pelo povo do ocidente peninsular, que contaminada tardiamente e por via erudita pelo latim, veio a dar origem ao português moderno, permite apontar possibilidades de interpretação de alguns termos que surgem nos textos latinos antigos. É o caso das designações de “Lusitano” e de “Montes Hermínios”. Nestas linhas tenta-se explicar a possível origem e o significado desses termos. Assim, admite-se a possibilidade de “lusitano” se referir apenas aos habitantes das serras de xisto a norte do Tejo, e “Montes Hermínios” significar na língua local “fazer quartel nas montanhas”.
