An 8 page essay which looks over and analyses the close relationship that the Korean Koryŏ Dynasty had with Medieval China, especially the Song Dynasty. Examples of war alliances, religions, artworks, politics, and education are analyzed to prove the thesis.

Предлагаемый вниманию читателя первый полный русский перевод этого памятника выполнен непосредственно с китаеязычного оригинала и по возможности точно следует исходному тексту. Перевод снабжён вступительной статьёй, в которой кратко и доступно излагаются основополагающие сведения, необходимые для того, чтобы в общих чертах разобраться в истории создания, структуре и содержании памятника, а также постраничным комментарием, задача которого — дать конкретную информацию текстологического и справочного характера.
Эта книга задумана как основа для последующей работы исследователей в самых разных областях: культурологии, истории, источниковедения, литературоведения, фольклористики, этнографии, исторической географии, религиоведения, истории материальной культуры и многих других. In this paper the materials concerning an early form of the state (community–state) in ancient Silla are analyzed. It is specified that as a result of extensive researches, scientists have come to conclusion that communities–states (“city-state”) are a universal form of the state during antiquity and the Middle Ages at the stage of formation of early statehood in Europe, America, Africa and Asia, including ancient Korea. It is asked: whether there was such early form of the state in ancient Silla. Process of formation of com-munities–states (which researchers call sŏngŭp kuk – literally “the strengthened town-states”, “the state, [formed around] the strengthened town”, “walled-town states”) in Chinhan is investigated in connection with a sinoykizm of territorial communities of the Gyeongju valley, emergence of chiefdom, on the basis of which, in connection with process of politogenesys, the early state formed. It is established that in community-state (bang, or kuk) Sonabol (Sorabol, Soyabol, Sobol) there were governing bodies, traditional for this form of the state (the head of community, council of nobility and people’s assembly), order of formation, order of activity and functions of which are typical for this stage of early statehood formation. The main bodies of public administration of community–state in ancient Silla are characterized. On the basis of this research, the conclusion about components of a form of the state (the form of government, a political regime and form of state system) is drawn. As a result, it is defined that the form of the state in community–state Sonabol is characterized by establishment of the monarchic form of government (in the form of the early monarchy – the first type of the monarchy which was a limited monarchy since the power of ruler – heads of community–state has been limited by the bodies of communal control), an aristocratic political regime (posts in a control system were held by notable persons) and policy form of state system (the small unitary state). Sonabol, or Saro, from the second half of the 4th century AD became the center of formation of the small territorial state Silla.

В раннем Силла прослеживаются разные этапы борьбы вокруг вопроса о престолонаследии: начиная с браков близких родственников (для того чтобы власть оставалась внутри рода правителей) и получение права на власть в результате брака с женщиной из правящей династии (предположительно, верховной жрицей или наследницей данного титула), с тенденцией перехода к патрилинейному принципу передачи власти с сохранением матрилинейности в завуалированной форме. Полностью патрилинейность победит уже в более позднее время.

Южнокорейские общины Пёнхана и Пёнчина были связаны этническим родством (на что указывают и результаты генетических исследований) через аустронезийских предков, ставших этническим компонентом народа хан в Южной Корее и народа во  на южном побережье Самхана и в Северном Кюсю.  Аустронезийцы  были носителями рисоводческой культуры, общей для Южной Кореи и Юго-западной Японии. Культура региона Кая оказала заметное влияние на развитие древнеяпонской культуры. Население долины реки Нактонган поддерживало активные торговые связи с населением Японских островов (что подтверждается и результатами археологических исследований). Независимость от власти маханского чин-вана людям Куя (Кымгвана) мог обеспечивать союз с этнически родственными им людьми вожэнь, объединившими во I–III веках общины Северного Кюсю, островов Цусима и Ики. Судя по материалам китайских династийных историй, община–государство Куя (кит. Гоусе, будущий Кымгван) в III веке н.э. вошла в объединение владений Корейского пролива и Северного Кюсю, получившего в китайских источниках название Нюй-ван-го. После распада данного объединения, в конце III века Кымгван выступил инициатором создания нового военно-политического альянса южнокаяских общин, получившего название Раннекаяский союз (кор. Кая чонги ёнмэн). Сформировавшиеся в Кая объединения Пон-кая (объединение общин Южной Кая вокруг Куя-кук, или Кымгван-кук, в районе Кимхэ) и Тэ-кая (объединение общин Северной Кая) образовали федерацию Кая – «Великая Кая» (или «Шесть Кая») с политическим и экономическим преобладанием в это время Южной Кая.

It has often been assumed that the Silla royal title 麻立干 mae lip kan is a compound with its first part being an Old Korean (OK) word corresponding to Late Middle Korean (LMK) mali~meli "head", but I suggest that the first part of 麻立干 is a hypothetical OK word *mɨRip "bay" or "river mouth", which is also the source of the Old Japanese place name 麻里布能宇良 maripu nö ura appearing in Man'yōshū 15.3630, 15.3632, and 15.3635.

I analyze in this paper two different traditions of the corpus of miracle stories related to the Wutai shan cult in Korea, and show that the original narrators of these stories in the Korean Wutai shan region (in modern Kangwŏn Province) must have been socially, culturally, and linguistically removed from the Sinicized elite of Silla society. The paper thus challenges the prevalent understanding that the Korean Wutai shan cult exemplifies the international collaboration between the elite Buddhists of Tang and Silla, and highlights the creative agency of local Buddhist communities in the propagation of this Pan-Asian Buddhist cult.

The aim of this article is to reveal allomorphs in Koguryeo(also Koguryo), compared to Khitan small script. Place-names renaming in 757 CE written in the Korean ancient literature of Samguk sagi 'History of the Three Kingdoms' shows 善 mai > *mä: 'good, well' in Koguryo language, whereas 朱蒙 *sumo: 善 射 'expert marksman' who founded Koguryeo might show mo: 'good, well' as an allomorph of *mä: 'good, well', compared to mä: and mo: 'great' in Khitan small script.

Вопрос о происхождении японцев и этнической принадлежности их предков до конца в современной науке не решён. Новейшие методы, прежде всего, генетические, позволяют лучше понять процессы этногенеза древних японцев, тем не менее, неправильное истолкование результатов исследований нередко используется,
в том числе, и для достижения политических целей. Так, во второй половине XX века появилось несколько близких гипотез, которые пытаются объяснять “корейские” элементы древнеяпонского этноса и черты древнеяпонской культуры завоеванием Японских островов в IV веке н.э. корейцами тунгусо-маньчжурского происхождения (людьми пуё, когурё или пэкче). Однако “корейские”
элементы и черты на самом деле имеют гораздо более древнее происхождение.

Установления международных отношений Китая с обитателями  Японских островов произошло в кон. IV – нач. III вв. до н.э. Однако в начале II в. до н.э. эти отношения были нарушены в связи с воцарением в северокорейском государстве Чосон (кит. Чаосянь) новой династии, основанной выходцем из государства Янь по имени Вэй Мань. Как следствие, в конце II в. до н.э. китайская империя предприняла усилия для восстановления отношений с “восточными иноземцами” (дунъи), в том числе, и с жителями Японских островов.

The present study deals with the element of the foreign in the self-portrayal of the elite during the Three Kingdoms period (ca. 400-668) on the Korean Peninsula. Based on the anthropological concepts of M. Sahlins’ ‘stranger-king’ and Mary W. Helms’ ‘esoteric knowledge’ it is being argued that the elite of Koguryŏ, Paekche, Silla, and the Kaya polities justified their claim to power through the narration of a foreign or supernatural origin of their lineage. As a basis for the examinations the progenitor myths included in the Samguk Sagi and Samgku Yusa as well as other remarks related to elite distinction are reviewed. Additionally, selected archaeological finds are interpreted as material expressions of the cultivation and display of esoteric knowledge that might have supported the narrative of the supernatural origin and abilities of the elite members.
The trope-like character of the progenitor myths and the formation of an inter-polity elite culture demonstrates the high competition and interdependencies between the elite members of the polities. Under this circumstances it is difficult to assess, whether particular founders or influential families were indeed of foreign origin or if this was just a claim by the local elite to maintain and justify their exertion of power.

Анализируются сведения китайских и корейских источников о первых общинах–государствах юго- западной Японии и их объединениях, существовавших на острове Кюсю и прилегающих территориях в I–II веках н.э.,  а также – о международных отношениях этих первых объединений с китайской империей Хань и южнокорейскими общинами–государствами. Делается попытка сопоставить мате- риалы китайских хроник о раннегосударственных образованиях в Японии с сообщениями древнеяпонских источников.

Анализируются сведения японских и корейских источников о первых международных связях общин-государств южной Кореи и их объединений с древнеяпонским государством Ямато в начале IV в. This paper tries to explain some aspects and facts of ancient Korean society as a consequence of the cultural overlaps occurred over the course of the first millennium CE. In particular, foreign elements such as Confucianism and Buddhism thought are hypothesized to have exerted a deep influence upon traditional customs, within a historical process leading to social transformations similar to those occurred in the Mediterranean civilizations after the Indo-European invasions during the second millennium BCE. Relying on a suggestive hypothesis regarding the origin of the Greek tragedy in relation with the social clashes due to cultural conflicts, the author believes to individuate a similar anthropological structure in some events and characters of Korean folklore, as they have been reported by historical and literary sources.

Abstract. In article data of the Chinese and Korean sources (including Korean family genealogy) about the Chinese-Korean relations of an era of existence of the Choson (Chin. Chaoxian) state in Northern Korea and the Southern Manchuria during late 11th – late 3rd centuries B.C. are analyzed.

In this paper I show first that "Moukri," which appears in the letter from the Turk qaghan translated into Greek in Theophylact Simocatta's "History" is a reference to the Goguryeo kingdom, and thus the earliest reference to a term that is the direct precursor of later "Korea." I then explore the variants and origin of this term, proposing that it consists of a prefix mu- meaning "water," and ethnonymic core of k.Ri or k.Re, and sometimes a Mongolic plural suffix of -t. The origin designation was not Goguryeo, but the Amur River peoples, from whom it was then extended to Goguryeo. I conclude with the possibility that this ethnonymic term k.Ri (~k.Re)+t may be the origin of the ethnonyms Merkid and Kereyid (N.B. I am not proposing any ethnic link, but a purely ethnonymic one).

The article analyses data from Japanese and Korean sourses about the first international contacts of communities-states of South Korea and their unions with ancient Japanese Yamato State in the beginning of IV century. An attempt to put Korean chronicles about early state formations in South Korea and ancient Japanese sourses together is made."

Вместе с буддизмом на Корейский полуостров пришли отдельные элементы добуддийских верований, воспринятые буддизмом ещё в Индии, — в частности, представления об индийских божествах (Индре и его свите, Сарасвати, четырёх небесных государях и других), которые считались в буддизме обитателями одной из высших сфер сансары и защитниками буддийского Закона. Материалом для исследования послужили сюжеты «Оставшихся сведений [о] трех государствах» (Самгук юса 三國遺事) — обширного собрания легенд и преданий по истории Кореи, составленного монахом Ирёном 一然 (1206–1289). В этом произведении, однако, нет особо посвящённых небожителям легенд — только эпизодические упоминания, а также нет информации о связанных с небожителями религиозных практиках, ибо небожители не являются объектом буддийского Прибежища. Тем не менее образы небожителей, по данным произведения Ирёна, занимали достаточно важное место в идеологии древней Кореи — они отождествлялись с местными божествами (Хванин), предками (Хэмосу) и историческими деятелями (Ким Юсин), а также использовались для «сакрализации» государства Силла, которое провозглашалось страной, где пребывают и которой покровительствуют эти мифологические персонажи.
Along with Buddhism, ancient Koreans learned about some elements of pre-Buddhist Indian beliefs, which have been previously incorporated into Buddhism in India—in particular, about the deities Indra (and his retinue), Sarasvati, the four heavenly kings and others, who were viewed in Buddhism as inhabitants of the higher Samsaric spheres and protectors of the Buddha’s Dharma. The research is based on the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk yusa 三國遺事), which is a vast collection of materials on early Korean history composed by Iryeon 一然 (1206–1289). However, there are no legends dedicated exclusively to the deities in this book—only individual references to them, and there is no information about religious practices associated with these deities, because Buddhists do not take refuge in them. However, as we can conclude from Iryon’s book, Indian deities played a rather noticeable part in ancient Korean ideological system: they were associated with local gods (Hwanin), ancestors (Haemosu) and historical figures (Gim Yusin), and employed for the “sanctifying” of Silla state, which was proclaimed to be a country inhabited by deities and protected by them.

The mounded graves in the city center of modern Kyŏngju belong to the most impressive relics of Old Silla. These burials, constructed as wooden chamber tombs within a stone mound, occurred during a specific stage of Silla’s state formation, which is also known in reference to the ruler’s title as the maripkan period (356-514). Due to their gigantic measurements and their extremely lavish equipment, a small group of these graves has been commonly interpreted as royal tombs that reflect the political independence and strength of Silla’s elite. However, by introducing the concept of ‘ostentatious graves’ it is being argued that the monumental burials are rather an expression of high socio-political tension. Their existence is an indicator of the political weakness of the emerging polity. Pressure from the outside caused by the kingdom of Koguryŏ and inter-polity competitions of the leading families are identified as a major impetus for the construction of these graves.

I argue that Korean Catholics have chosen which of the many martyrs in their history to be declared saints as a way of constructing a particular narrative for Korean Catholic history. Who was canonized first, who is being promoted for canonization now, and who has been left out tells us much about how Korean Catholic history is being constructed.

This article is an analysis of the tale Munhŭi who bought a dream which has been reported, with few variants, both in Samguk sagi and Samguk yusa. As the tale narrates a very particular and old dream, in which a urine flood forecasts kingship and royalty, it has not been investigated here on the basis of a modern psycho-analytical approach, but within eastern and western ancient cultural patterns regarding humans' consideration for excreta and criteria of dreams interpretation. The research led the author to propose for Munhŭi's dream an archaic (and today lost) archetype of interpretation, whose origin is perhaps to be found in the Ancient Middle-East.
