Happy Thanksgiving

Sweet memories from 2018 at my son's house!

I am most deeply grateful to John Rogers who invited me to stay in his home when mine had no water or electricity or cell service (which was restored) nor internet which wasn't restored for a long while.

Drinking water, oh how grateful I was that it again comes out of our taps.

Gratitude especially for the hospitality of my dear friend Martha, who has been part of my life for almost half a century!

Gratitude for the abundance of food which I enjoy.

Grateful for the living of 82 years and 3 months...a lot of memories!

The force behind the feast was always this woman...just changed her hair and shoes as the generations passed.

Or as a graphic artist depicted her...

I hope my adult children and adult grandchildren have learned the folly of the myth of the Pilgrims and Native people for the first Thanksgiving.

Today's inspiration:

So grateful to live in Black Mountain, right next to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Grateful for all the blessings I've received, and surviving the recent storm.

Thanksgiving Parades

Felix the Cat was the first inflated balloon critter in the Macy's Parade in 1927

1923 parade had animals from the zoo, not circus animals!

More recent Thanksgiving Parade

Immigrants seeing the statue of liberty almost at the end of their travels. Imagine their joy at this arrival!

Thanksgiving in the future

Excerpts from this article in "Truthout"...

To Avoid a Dystopian Climate Future, We Must First Envision the World We Want

When we envision a sustainable future, we can show people that there is something worth fighting for, not just against.

"...Established systems of oppression are skilled at making the current state of affairs seem inevitable. The climate crisis is no exception. The overproduction and overconsumption driving the climate crisis is often explained as “the selfishness of human nature,” or an inevitable cost of “population growth.” But this overlooks the fact that humans have been around for millions of years and have lived relatively sustainable lives. It’s only in the last few centuries that overconsumption of resources, including fossil fuels, has caused such extraordinary ecological degradation. These short-sighted explanations often stifle climate action and create a sense of hopelessness. To break out of this limited vision, climate activists must tap into collective imagination..."

"...Embracing imagination in activism is often framed as wishful thinking. But radical imagination is a fundamental part of working toward a vision of the future for all social movements, from racial justice to decolonial movements. Imagination, world-building, dreams and utopias are used by various talented social activists who encourage us to envision a different world. Climate activists shouldn’t shy away from this..."

"...One of my favorite parts of imagining climate futures is that there isn’t just one vision to work toward. Our visions of a climate future should be as numerous and diverse as the many ecologies of the Earth and its people..."

"...As we start to see glimpses of climate dystopia, we remain in desperate need of visions of climate utopia."

So what's your vision?

Thanks for reading, and I'll enjoy your comments!

When we schedule too much in our lives trying to meet our obligations, we only end up draining our energy.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you have a great day full of gratitude!

Of course I miss being with my families...and hope to talk with them by phone sometime during the day!

I was among about a dozen women who were leaning on the handles of their shopping carts at the grocery yesterday around noon. We told the tale, that we'd worked pretty hard to get to this place, and were looking at the finish line. Tomorrow after the feast, while others are watching a game or two, we'll all gladly have our feet up with a nice glass of our favorite drinks.

Immense Thanks (from FaceBook)

Right now there are Tibetan Buddhist monks in a temple in the Himalayas endlessly reciting mantras for the cessation of your suffering and for the flourishing of your happiness.
Someone you haven't met yet is already dreaming of adoring you.
Someone is writing a book that you will read in the next two years that will change how you look at life.
Nuns in the Alps are in endless vigil, praying for the Holy Spirit to alight the hearts of all of God's children.
A farmer is looking at his organic crops and whispering, "nourish them."
Someone wants to kiss you, to hold you, to make tea for you.
Someone is willing to lend you money, wants to know what your favorite food is, and treat you to a movie.
Someone in your orbit has something immensely valuable to give you — for free.
Something is being invented this year that will change how your generation lives, communicates, heals and passes on.
The next great song is being rehearsed.
Thousands of people are in yoga classes right now intentionally sending light out from their heart chakras and wrapping it around the earth.
Millions of children are assuming that everything is amazing and will always be that way.
Someone is in profound pain, and a few months from now, they'll be thriving like never before. From where they are, they just can't see it .
Someone who is craving to be partnered, to be acknowledged, to arrive, will get precisely what they want — and even more. And because that gift will be so fantastical in it's reach and sweetness, it will quite magically alter their memory of angsty longing and render it all "So worth the wait."
Someone has recently cracked open their joyous, genuine nature because they did the hard work of hauling years of oppression off of their psyche — this luminous juju is floating in the ether, and is accessible to you.
Someone just this second wished for world peace, in earnest.
Some civil servant is making sure that you get your mail, and your garbage is picked up, that the trains are running on time, and that you are generally safe.
Someone is dedicating their days to protecting your civil liberties and clean drinking water.
Someone is regaining their sanity.
Someone is coming back from the dead.
Someone is genuinely forgiving the seemingly unforgivable.
Someone is curing the incurable.
You. Me. Some. One. Now.

I am so thankful for many blessings in my life.
Yesterday I got my broken filling fixed at the dental clinic, an emergency appointment was available within 2 days of calling for one. How nice to have my chompers in as good a shape as they can be these days (meaning in this time of COVID, as well as this time of my life!)

I'm looking forward to a short zoom talk with my family today sometime. I know two members are joining another family of four. I don't know about the family of 5, nor the mixed family of maybe 5 or 6.

Such is the way our families are existing these days...working people, two who are in college, one working from home for a high school, and those whose jobs kind of stopped last spring...what a sad time for us all. But we're looking for rainbows still.

I have begun eating plant based foods (mainly) and so no turkey for this gal. I still eat yogurt made from milk. I don't know what kind of stir-fry I'll have, probably with rice. I may do some mashed potatoes...just because they sound good, and I can do them with Rice Dream rather than milk and butter. And I'm set for making some dynamite spinach salads! Lots of fresh veggies!

I hope everyone out there reading this has a Happy Thanksgiving.

Family photo album - Ohio

Thanksgiving - the second one I've shared with my son and his family in Ohio. We are aware that each of us likes to save photos, and Michelle and I shared some we took.

We were very grateful for the bounty which we ate with joy!

Audrey, Kate and Caroline finally posed for us!

Happy Thanksgiving

A dragon of clouds coming over the ridge into the valley...but no rain this time. This is the office building aka club house at my apartments. It used to be the home of the original owners of the property who started Blue Ridge Apartments for seniors.

Two different kinds of oak foliage by Lake Tomahawk.

Just one tree with red somethings, on the duck island.

I couldn't tell if they were leaves or berries, but liked the reflection in the water.

Three different kinds of ducks, and just one Canada Goose (below.)

My gorgeous granddaughters who I am visiting today...but I didn't take this pic.
