Assignment Report Format
Every member of the group MUST submit an individual report.

In all cases, Faculty procedures will be followed for identified plagiarism.

There is no fixed word length, or page length, for the report. Guide lengths are indicated
below for each section. You may include Figures and Tables as required to supplement your
work.

Honour Statement

You MUST add the following statement on the first page, followed by your initials
or personal signature
On my honour, I confirm that I have abided by the University regulations regarding unfair
means and this assignment is my own personal work

Title Page
This section should start on a new page.
The following information should be included,
• Your name and the students numbe.
• The name and student number of every member of the group (refer to the Table 1).
• The University of Hull logo [Link:
https://canvas.hull.ac.uk/courses/63303/modules/items/730845
• An appropriate title of the course work
• ‘Due Date’ and ‘Date of Submission’

Abstract
This section should start on a new page.
The abstract should be a concise summary of the work reported in the report, including
any conclusions you make.
Guide Length: One paragraph.

Table of Contents
This section should start on a new page.
Including ‘List of Figures, ‘List of Tables’, etc.
Guide Length: 1-2 pages.

4
1) Introduction
This section should start on a new page.
Provide a brief introduction to the topic of the group project.
In this section you MUST state clearly who in your group is responsible for carrying out the
the following
1. Theoretically discuss Fractionation Distillation
2. Design of binary distillation column-1
3. Design of binary distillation column-2

Guide length: 1 page max.

2) Theoretically, discuss Fractionation Distillation. This should include

Fractionation distillation (Refer to the assignment specification mentioned above)

In this section, you MUST state clearly who in your group is responsible for carrying out
the sections above
Guide length: 8 – 10 pages excluding figures.

3) Design of Binary distillation column

Please Note:
• This is an individual task. However, it is expected that you and your group members
check each other’s calculations and provide suggestions/recommendations.

• Each member in a group MUST have a unique process equipment design.

• If two or more members have designed the same equipment, then it will not be marked
and all students in a group who have designed the same process equipment will get zero
for the ‘Design’ section

• To get maximum marks, you need to show detailed calculations. You may type the
calculations on a word document. Hand-written calculations will also be accepted,
provided that it is not in the main body of the report.

• If your group wants to make sure this does not happen, one of the group members may
email Dr Sharif Zein ([email protected])

• State any assumptions and provide justifications that you may have used for designing
the separation process equipment.

Guide Length: 6 - 10 pages.

5
4) Process Flow Diagram (PFD), PFD Table and the Material Balance
Calculations

This section should start on a new page.

In this section, kindly provide the PFD with PFD Table in landscape orientation ONLY. This
may be in A4 or A3 size.
Summarise the material balances and provide detailed calculations in the Appendix.

Please Note that this is a Group task. However, each group member must submit it as part
of their individual submission.

As part of this section, you are required to carry out the following tasks:

• Draw the process flow diagram (PFD). You may use Microsoft PowerPoint or Visio
(recommended) to draw the process flow diagram.

• Provide the PFD and the PFD Table in landscape orientation. Include keys/legend as
appropriate. You are NOT required to copy the format of the PFD Table. You may choose
the one available in the textbook or other sources.

• Carry out the unit's individual material balance and overall material balance and confirm
that the material balance is correct. The recommendation is that you carry out the
material balance after completing all the calculations.

• To get maximum marks, you need to show detailed calculations. You may type the
calculations on a word document. Hand-written calculations will also be accepted,
provided that it is not in the main body of the report

• You work together with the calculation; however, how you present will be individual work.
It should be your own individual work and should not be copied from other group
members. Doing so, the maximum mark for this section would be 5 out of 25.

4) Conclusion
Guide length: half a page.
Please Note that this is a Group task. However, each group member must submit it as part
of their individual submission.

6
Appendices
The hand-written calculations employed for the results shown earlier should be provided in
detail. Whilst the body of the report must be typed and written, the content in this section
may be hand-written. This must be good quality and clearly legible.

Submission
Please submit this Question together with the other questions in Question XXX
Please note that this is an official University assessment. You are expected to treat
this with the same respect as other assessments. The usual University unfair means
regulations will be applied.

Draft Submission
In order to check the originality of your work, you may also submit a draft report (in pdf) at:

Coursework: Application of Separation Processes]. Please note that any work submitted to
the draft assignment will NOT be marked. Make sure you submit your final assignment to
the correct assignment in Canvas.
