Changes in Matter in the Presence or Absence of Oxygen

Oxygen is a part of the air that surrounds us. It can cause changes on
different materials. The presence or absence of oxygen has various effects
on matter. Among these common ones that you readily see are combustion
or the chemical reaction that occurs when oxygen combines with other
substances to produce heat and usually light and rusting or the state
where metals and iron form rust.

The diagram below is called Fire Triangle. It shows that three things are
needed for fire to occur. In order for fire to occur, there should be heat, fuel
and oxygen. A fire occurs when the three elements are present in the right
amount. The fire will continue its flame provided that there is continuous
supply of these three elements. Suppose, oxygen will be removed from the
diagram, what do you think will happen to the fire produced?

You may have observed that some iron nails in your home have rust.
Rusting is caused by the reaction of iron with oxygen present in the air.
This kind of reaction is slower than the rate of combustion. The amount of
rust formed in an iron depends on the moisture and humidity of the
surroundings. Since rust makes materials break easily, these structures
are coated with paint to keep oxygen from reacting directly with it.
Changes in Matter through Application of Heat

You have learned that simply exposing some objects

to oxygen produces various effects. Aside from
oxygen, another thing that produces changes in
matter is heat.

Heat is a form of energy. It can mainly come from

the sun but may come from other sources like fire.
Heat can bring about physical changes in matter.
Some solid materials melt when enough heat is applied to them. A common
example is a melting ice when it is placed out of the refrigerator.

Heat does not only produce physical change in a material, sometimes

heating a material causes it to undergo physical changes. The chemical
changes caused by heat are irreversible. One common example of this is
cooked food. Cooked foods have undergone chemical change through heat.

Heat is important because it produces some changes which are

necessary for us living organisms. A chemical change occurs to materials
when heat is applied. Change in color, odor, and taste, production of smoke,
ash, bubbles, fire, new products and even heat are the indication of
chemical change.

Directions: A. Read the statement below and answer the question carefully.
Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. In which place will rusting of iron occur easily?

a. humid place c. dry place
b. dusty place d. shady place
c.
2. When metal rusts, the material that is rusting becomes ___________.
a. hard c. strong
b. weak d. sturdy

3. Which is true about chemical change?

a. New material is formed.
b. The product cannot be changed to its original form.
c. The product is improved and becomes durable.
d. Both a and b are correct.
4. Which of the following is NOT an example of change brought about
by heat exposure on a material?
a. electricity produced by a solar panel
b. charged of batteries used to run a toy
c. charged cellphones
d. rusting of a steel wool

5. What will happen to slice pieces of potato when exposed to the air?
a. It will taste salty. c. It will taste sweet.
b. It will become ripe. d. It will turn brown.

6. What will be formed on nails or metals when exposed to oxygen?

a. bubbles b. ice c. rust d. molds

7. A house is burning, and the wind blows hard. Fire increases

rapidly. This is due to _______
a. lack of oxygen c. presence of fire extinguisher
b. presence of oxygen d. the use of water to stop the fire 8.

8. Which of the following situations show the effect of lack of oxygen

on the material?
a. spoiling of food c. decaying of dead organisms
b. rusting of iron d. burning wick placed inside a closed jar

9. This is also known as the burning process, and it is supported by

oxygen.
a. combustion c. decomposition
b. chemical change d. physical change

10. By keeping the food cooled, the growth of microorganisms is _____.

a. increased c. minimized
b. not changed d. stopped and they are killed
Directions: B. Read and observe the pictures below. Write your answer on
the space provided for. (You may use a separate sheet)

A dry spell is described as having high temperatures and a low amount of

rainfall. Because of this, a continual supply of water through irrigation is
required in rice fields. How do you think excessive heat can affect the
condition in rice fields? What possible changes do you think will be observed?
