TEACHER'S REFERENCE GUIDE (TRG)
TEACHER'S REFERENCE GUIDE
I. OBJECTIVES
1. Describe the changes that happen in materials under the absence or
presence of oxygen
2. Investigate changes that happen in materials under the condition of
absence or presence of oxygen
3. Describe what happens to materials under the application of heat
4. Investigate changes that happen in materials under the application of
heat
Dear Learner,
Good day! For this activity, you are going to investigate changes that happen
in materials under the presence or absence of oxygen and the application of
heat.
Below are the instructions provided. Don’t hesitate to ask for support from
anyone whom you think can help you do the activities. Most importantly, be
free and creative in doing the activities but ensure safety at all times. Have
fun.
Sincerely,
Your Teacher
Set A.
1. Describe the physical characteristics of the banana cue stick and paper.
2. Hold one end of the stick and burn the other end with the use of
matchstick. Observe what will happen.
3. Next, hold one end of the paper and burn the other end using a
matchstick. Observe what will happen.
4. Write your observations on the table below, then answer the guide
questions.
Set B.
1. Hold one end of the stick. Burn the other end with the use of a
matchstick.
2. Cover the burning stick with a drinking glass. Observe what will happen.
3. Next, hold one end of the paper and burn the other end using a
matchstick.
4. Cover the burning paper with a drinking glass. Observe what will happen.
5. Write your observations in the table below.

Directions: Read and understand the concepts and ideas presented below.
Oxygen is a part of the air that surrounds us. It can cause changes on
different materials. The presence or absence of oxygen has various effects
on matter. Among these common ones that you readily see are combustion
or the chemical reaction that occurs when oxygen combines with other
substances to produce heat and usually light and rusting or the state
where metals and iron form rust.
The diagram below is called Fire Triangle. It shows that three things are
needed for fire to occur. In order for fire to occur, there should be heat, fuel
and oxygen. A fire occurs when the three elements are present in the right
amount. The fire will continue its flame provided that there is continuous
supply of these three elements. Suppose, oxygen will be removed from the
diagram, what do you think will happen to the fire produced?
You may have observed that some iron nails in your home have rust.
Rusting is caused by the reaction of iron with oxygen present in the air.
This kind of reaction is slower than the rate of combustion. The amount of
rust formed in an iron depends on the moisture and humidity of the
surroundings. Since rust makes materials break easily, these structures
are coated with paint to keep oxygen from reacting directly with it.
Changes in Matter through Application of Heat
Directions: A. Read the statement below and answer the question carefully.
Encircle the letter of the correct answer.
5. What will happen to slice pieces of potato when exposed to the air?
a. It will taste salty. c. It will taste sweet.
b. It will become ripe. d. It will turn brown.
