Relevance of Gadgets to the Academic Performance

of the Grade12 STEM Students

Background of the study

A gadget is a small machine or device which does something useful. You

sometimes refer to something as a gadget when you are suggesting that it is

complicated and unnecessary. Whenever we discover a new gadget in the market, we

get that immediate need to try it out. We become curious, wanting to know how it was

invented and how it can change our lives. It’s inevitable, especially in this age where

gadget said our everyday. Computers, mobile phones, and even digital cameras allow

us to work, communicate, and function. It’s the boom of digital, indeed. Because of this,

we often take technology for granted. In the same way, psychologists say that gadgets

do not have a place for developing fantasy and creativity since everything has already

been thought out and programmed. It is needed to act on the pattern, repeating the

same actions. Thus, the student passively consumes information, does not make

decisions and does not build associations. Psychologists talk about clip-on thinking,

where memorizing is superficial. Consequently, there is no progress in learning. Phones

force students to spend most of their life on the Internet, interacting with each other

through text and social networks, rather than face to face, as it happened before.

Dependence on gadgets and social networks alienates them from each other. Not to

mention the fact that social networks are detrimental to the learning process. The use of

gadgets also leads to physiological problems. The main load is exposed to the eyes,

your professional skills, you can use the nearest source: your gadget. Whether it is a
smart phone or tablet, you can turn it into your everyday college helper.

You may record your lectures, transcribe them to text documents, and track your results

with GPA calculator on gpalabs.com, and share your home tasks in digital classrooms.

If it is all about you and you value your time, read this digitally inspired article created

especially for students. Spend your time on the internet wisely and use gadgets for your

incredible educational achievements. (Visnji, 2020) Based on the study The Impact of

Electronic Gadget Uses with Academic Performance among Secondary School

Students. There were 233 school students who involved in this study and majority of

them (59.2%) were Malay. For gender, 53.2% were male and 46.8% were female. In

total of 48.1% students were spending time more than 6 hours on electronic gadget and

the remaining 51.9% students spending timeless than 5.99 hours on electronic gadget.

Based on the findings, the result showed that there were significant association

between races, gender, parent income, level of dependency, academic performance

and health status and the total time spent on electronic gadget but opposing, there were

no significant association between years started using electronic gadget and total time

spent on electronic gadget. Also they conclude that majority of students who spent more

time on electronic gadget use has high level of dependency towards gadget, poor

academic achievement and good health status. Thus, the health care providers should

plan effective intervention such as introduce application on electronic gadget for

academic purposes and health tracking to overcome these problems so that students

can balance between their academic achievement and health status and increase

wellness and health among school students. Especially in this time of pandemic

gadgets are relevant. Local and regional governments on the front line of the COVID-19
crisis have resorted to digital technologies to monitor, anticipate and influence the

spread of the disease, as well as to provide education for students who cannot access

school as well as foster social cohesion while we respect physical distancing.

This study aims to know the relevance and the impact of gadgets to the grade 12

students in Ormoc City Senior High School.

Statement of the Problem

As the days goes by our technology is getting more improved and high, many

versions of phone and gadgets was released. On the other hand these technologies are

now very important that it plays a big role in our studies. Because of the high-tetchiness

of our technology now, we can now find information that might help to our studies.

Since by using a gadget now is important to the students. It is advisable to have

an equipment that they can use to their studies. If the technology is getting more

improved, the learning system also keeps on updating. The things that they use to teach

now is different from the way they are teaching now. It provides equipment to use for

the students to be able to understand the lessons.

Therefore, the goal of this research is to know the relevance of gadgets to the

academic performance of the students. If it gives a positive impact to the students.

Scope and Delimitation

The focus of this study will be the relevance of gadgets to the academic

performance of the students.

Furthermore, this will be delimited to the 50 grade12 STEM students who are

currently studying at Ormoc City Senior High School. In this study, the research

instruments will only be surveys and structured questionnaires.

Review of Related Literature

Gadgets

Gadgets is an often small mechanical or electronic device with a practical use but

often thought of as a novelty (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Gadgets helps students for their

learning, it can easily and securely take notes to store and discover them later using

applications for note taking, the ability to communicate with others using Google Apps

or a similar network, access the wealth of knowledge available online, and, among

many other uses, to use idea mapping or mind mapping software (Slavin, 2018).

Academic Performance

The concept of academic performance extends beyond the classroom to

achievement. Some of the brightest students do not earn straight as, but are incredibly

well-rounded, from music to sports, improving in all. When describing academic

success, people frequently consider grades first. This involves colleges, which rate

students by their GPA, granting special designations for those graduating first and

second in their class, such as valedictorian and salutatorian. Grades don't always

represent the expertise or intellect of an individual. In a classroom environment, some

students do not perform well, but they are very intelligent and gain high marks on IQ

tests, standardized tests or college entrance exams. Academic success can also be
demonstrated by the initiative. By acting as the student body president or holding officer

positions in student organizations such as the honor society or the club, this is how

students show their competence (Williams, 2018).

Technology can be used to enhance learning and teaching and help our students

succeed. Students can access online tools with the use of learning management

systems (LMS) to get on-demand support outside their teacher's physical scope.

Students can access instructors, tools, and assignments through the web, and those

who need to spend more time learning a concept can also help them work at their own

speed and keep up with their peers via online lessons and curriculum. Technology may

assist parents by video conferencing or other online networking platforms to be able to

meet with teachers (“How Technology Can Be Used To Enhance Practical Science”,

2019).

Gadgets and Academic Performance

New technology has substantially improved the lives of individuals across various

fields, especially in education. Nevertheless, we cannot assume that technology is all

good in itself. There is the "advantage and disadvantage" of a two-edged sword, if it's

beneficial or non-beneficial and we have to see to what degree it has actually led to

improving people's learning norm. Physical activity and socialization have been

decreased because the majority of electronic devices are used as a forum to participate

in physical and social relationships. Many kids are becoming less imaginative and less

able to amuse themselves. They gradually became centered on the important things in

such a way that they begin to lose focus (Garcia, 2020). Many of them are overwhelmed

by technology and therefore do not even perform learning assignments. They rely
heavily on technology and are utterly unable to finish even the simplest tasks on their

own. Technology's resourcefulness encourages cheating. Therefore, many students

plagiarize their works and steal ideas from other writers and students. However, since

many online resources are false, some people cannot find relevant information (Staff,

2019). Nevertheless, in addition to the internet, many electronic devices, such as

laptops, make the lives of students easier. They may make use of computers to make

presentations and also use the internet to do research for their essays and articles on a

range of topics (Garcia, 2020). Gadgets often help to accomplish any academic

challenge, and really quickly. Students gain instant access to sources of knowledge that

help to complete their assignments. Such speed and productivity inspire them greatly. In

the learning process, students become active participants and can enhance all sorts of

learning skills. It retains the cooperation of learners. This means that activities are

carried out faster and facilitates communicative and interpersonal skills (Staff, 2020).
