El objetivo de este libro es centrar el enfoque en la obra de Gabriel Figueroa para mostrar las razones por las que sus imagenes han adquirido el nivel iconico que lo situa como un personaje medular de la cinematografia y la cultura de Mexico. Es analizar como y porque su obra se ha vuelto fundamental para las construcciones visuales de la identidad nacional. La intencion de esta investigacion es establecer , de forma critica, que la produccion filmica es inherentemente cooperativa, y reconocer asi la asociacion creativa tan cercana que existe entre fotografo y el director para construir el significado en una obra cinematorgrafica.

In Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting (1979), Syd Field first popularized the Three-Act Paradigm of Setup, Confrontation and Resolution for conceptualizing and creating the Hollywood screenplay. For Field, the budding screenwriter needs a clear screenplay structure, one which includes two well-crafted plot points, the first at the end of Act I, the second at the end of Act II. By focusing on the importance of the four essentials of beginning and end, and the two pivotal plot points, Field did the Hollywood film industry an enormous service. Nonetheless, although he handles the issue of overall structure expertly, Field falls down when offering the screenwriter advice on how to successfully build each of the three individual Acts. This is because Field did not recognize the importance of another layer of analysis that underpins the existence of plot points. This is the level of the plot genotype. This book will offer you a richer theory of plot structure than the one Field outlines. "Páginas pasaderas es la metáfora de la que nos servimos para referirnos a las páginas de un guion no escrito. Se da la circunstancia de que, aun cuando el guion estuviera escrito, la película no estaría realizada. Estos contrastes entre lo real y lo virtual, de mayor interés aún que los ofrecidos por las nuevas tecnologías aplicadas al mundo del cine, configuran los ejes entorno a los cuales se desarrolla la reflexión sobre el trabajo del guionista. Las páginas en blanco obedecen a un silencio condicionado por las expectativas sobre la película que queremos ver. En el ámbito audiovisual la figura del guionista es la señalada para transitar por encima de sus páginas pasaderas, desde la orilla del silencio del creador hasta la de las expectativas del público. Stepping pages is a metaphor that we use for the pages of a non-written screenplay. As it happens, even though the screenplay may be written, the film isn’t produced. These contrasts betweenthe real and the virtual world, which are still of greater interest than what is offered by the newtechnologies applied to the world of films, set up the basics that develop the reflections about thework of scriptwriters. The blank pages obey a silence that is conditioned by the expectations on thefilm we want to watch. In the audiovisual area, the figure of the scriptwriter is shown in order to crossover its stepping pages, from the creator’s shore of silence to the expectations of the public. Newareas, like North American and British television series, video games, interactive films or collaborativeprojects in the Internet, that became closer to the cinematographic aesthetics and narrative, assumethe challenges not trodden for the creative screenplay writing. The articles in this volume, written byprofessionals (directors, screenplay writers and screenplay consultants or script doctors) as well asby those who study the subject (critics and analysts), all of them belonging to the Hispanic world,even though from different film industries, are trying to explore the extent of the changes producedin the work that vertebrates the audiovisual process and notice the characteristics of these and othercontemporary audiovisual narratives, just like its scenery innovations."

Network Text Analysis (NTA) involves the creation of networks of words and/or concepts from linguistic data. Its key insight is that the position of words and concepts in a text network  provides vital clues to the central and underlying themes of the text as a whole. Recent research has used an inductive approach to the question of theme extraction. In this paper we take a deductive approach in that we first establish prior expectations as to the key themes to be found in the text. We then compare and contrast the results of our network analysis with the results of  literary and cultural analyses of the film Fight Club as reported in over four dozen other peer-reviewed publications. While our results are remarkably consistent with and complementary to results in those studies, our analysis permits something the others do not—an analytical framework for relating those underlying and central themes to one another.

Neste artigo, buscamos investigar o roteiro e o lugar do roteirista nesse processo de escrita. Levantamos questões e possíveis caminhos acerca da existência dos roteiros cinematográficos. Além disso, nosso intuito é compreender como o roteirista se insere no ato de escrever. Partimos da argumentação de autores que estudam os roteiros, numa tentativa de valorizar esse tipo de pesquisa.

Abstract: In this article, we seek to investigate the screenplay and the screenwriter's place in this writing process. We raise questions and possible paths about the existence of screenplays. In addition, our intention is to understand how the writer is inserted in the act of writing. We start from the argument of authors who study the screenplays, in an attempt to value this type of research.

Esta pesquisa investiga diferentes práticas de roteiro com base no estudo de processo de alguns cineastas do cinema brasileiro contemporâneo, em um olhar de complementaridade diante da observação das práticas de um corpus variado. Estão entre os cineastas cujos processos são estudados, principalmente: Eliane Caffé, Anna Muylaert e Leonardo Mouramateus; e, complementarmente: Marcelo Gomes, Karim Ainouz, Alê Abreu e Cao Guimarães. O estudo toma como recorte o roteirista-diretor, de modo a concentrar-se nas transformações, adequações e recriações pelas quais passam os roteiros ao longo de todo o processo de criação dos filmes, e vê na diversidade do cinema brasileiro contemporâneo um corpus capaz de expressar, ainda que minimamente, a complexidade do pensamento do roteiro e da narrativa no cinema. Tem como pergunta norteadora: como a abordagem complexa de um corpus variado, em um estudo que não separa obra, processo e espectador, pode contribuir com uma formação mais ampla no campo de estudos do roteiro e da narrativa no cinema? Encontra apoio teórico e metodológico especialmente na teoria da criação de Cecília Salles, em diálogo com outras teorias, como a teoria dos cineastas (Aumont, 2002; Penafria et al. 2016); a visão policêntrica do cinema (Nagib, 2006; Dennison, 2013); a teoria processual da narrativa (Ricoeur, 2010); o estudo das materialidades na comunicação (Gumbrecht, 2010); e os estudos da literacia fílmica (Tavares & Reia-Baptista, 2019; Reia-Baptista, 2009). Busca o que há de complementar, mais do que semelhante ou diferente, na diversidade dos procedimentos de criação de roteiro em uma visão da criação como experimentação contínua, que permanece ativa durante todo o processo e que se estende, também, ao espectador. Procura contribuir com os estudos da comunicação; da semiótica; do processo de criação; do cinema; da narrativa; da teoria do roteiro; da literacia fílmica e da história do cinema brasileiro e mundial, transdiciplinarmente. __________________________________  This research investigates different screenwriting practices based on the process of creation studies of some filmmakers on contemporary Brazilian cinema. It is a complementary look concerning the observation of practices of a varied corpus. The filmmakers whose processes are studied are mainly: Eliane Caffé, Anna Muylaert and Leonardo Mouramateus; and, in addition: Marcelo Gomes, Karim Ainouz, Alê Abreu and Cao Guimarães. The screenwriter-director is the study focus of this research in order to concentrate on the transformations, adaptations and recreations that the screenplays undergo throughout the entire process of film creation, and sees in the diversity of contemporary Brazilian cinema a corpus capable of expressing the complexity of the screenwriting and narrative in cinema. The guiding question is "how can the complex approach of a varied corpus, in a study that does not separate film, process and spectator, contribute to a broader education in the field of screenwriting and narrative studies in cinema?". It finds theoretical and methodological support especially in Cecília Salles' theory of creation process, in dialogue with other theories, such as the filmmakers theory (Aumont, 2002; Penafria et al. 2016); the polycentric approach to world cinema (Nagib, 2006; Dennison, 2013); the procedural theory of narrative (Ricoeur, 2010); materialities of communication (Gumbrecht, 2010); and film literacy studies (Tavares & Reia-Baptista, 2019; Reia-Baptista, 2009). Also, It is fundamental for reflections on screenwriting practices the observations on the reading processes according to Vilém Flusser and Paulo Freire; the gesture of making and the need to pontificate (translate) in Vilém Flusser; and the contributions of Jacques Rancière on the ignorant schoolmaster and the emancipated spectator. It seeks what is complementary, more than what is similar or different, in the diversity of screenwriting creation procedures in a vision of creation as continuous experimentation, which remains active throughout the process, and which also extends to the spectator. It seeks to contribute to the fields of communication studies, semiotics; creation process; cinema; narrative; screenwriting; film literacy and the history of Brazilian and world cinema, in a across disciplines approach.

The Hollywood Golden Age was a revolutionary moment in the history of cinema and is pivotal to understanding the historical passage of a peculiar new art form-screenwriting. This early film period, from the Tens to the Sixties, was determined by key interactions between the respective forms of cinema and stage. Together, these interactions form a wider screenwriting "discourse." There are reoccurring disputes in film scholarship over the paternity of the conventions and techniques of screenwriting. One solution is that techniques of theatre playwriting persisted extensively in the production practices of classical Hollywood cinema. Whether or not its professionals were aware of this is at the heart of this dispute. It is possible to identify the contribution of screenwriting manuals from Hollywood's Golden Age toward the standardization of screenwriting techniques. The article aims to examine in the screenwriting manuals of this period some statements by practitioners who document the normalization and codification of the narrative structures used in screenwriting over time-in particular, the three-act structure. The validity and origin of the three-act structure are constantly debated among screenwriters. While this formula was known to the early writers of the Silent Era due to its legacy throughout centuries of playwriting and literature, it reappeared in the Seventies in the guise of a new theory. This article attempts to fill in certain gaps in the history of the theorization of screenwriting practices by juxtaposing statements found in screenwriting manuals and the statements of scholars and educators of this field. Ultimately, narrative conventions belonging to the tradition of theatre, as well as technological exigencies were integral in shaping the cinema techniques in use today.

The auteur theory has been a moot point for several years, and among others it has been criticized for a thigh focus on directors and finished films. A similar tendency has been tracked in the Danish research, where the film research mainly notices directors and finished films. Therefore, Danish research has not yet discovered another type of auteurs: the screenwriters. With this thesis, I make a critical reflection on the auteur theory and auteur method based on the research question: How does the style of writing of the Danish screenwriter Tobias Lindholm chal-tinuation hereof I reflect on how Lindholm, as a writer, illustrate that the auteur theory needs alteration. I have answered the research question through an interdisciplinary study of the scripts The Hijacking (2011) and The Hunt (2012). In this, I highlighted seven so-of writing. I examined this through a text analysis that was-and the reading of the film by modern man. The text analysis was further supplemented by relevant terms and theories, for instance George Lakoff and Mark Johnsons theory of metaphors, Peter Harms Larsens description of types of scenes and author Robert McKee and screenwriter Linda Aronsons construction of style of writing in screenplays. Then I could make an auteur analysis of Lindholm, whereby it was possible to emphasize strengths and weaknesses of the auteur theory and respond to the research question. From the above, I could conclude that Lindholm can be termed a so-is a screenwriter with several similarities with the auteur-tions. His two scripts contain literary tools, extent and compression of speed through which his personal signature is expressed. This also supports the dramaturgy of The Hijacking and The Hunt scripts the relationship between the director and screenwriter through his literary and dramaturgical compe-auteur. With his writing of style, Lindholm demonstrates that not only the director has the vision for the finished film As can a screenwriter.

Autores como Jean-Claude Carrière (2006) afirmam que o roteiro existe somente com a função de dar vida ao filme. Após a etapa de produção, ele deixa de existir. Porém, sabemos que isso não pode ser tomado como uma verdade. Bela Balázs (1952), por exemplo, atribui um status de arte ao roteiro. Outros autores, como David Bordwell (2011), também seguem essa vertente e buscam colocar o roteiro num patamar de existência que não o deixa atado ao filme e nem como algo transitório ou evanescente. Para nós, a diferença entre roteiro e o filme é básica: a linguagem de um é escrita e a do outro é baseada em sons e imagens. Ambos comunicam uma estória, de formas diferentes. Utilizando autores como Steven Price (2011) e Ann Igelström (2014), trazemos aqui reflexões sobre o aspecto comunicacional de um roteiro. Buscamos compreender a maneira como esse texto, de linguagem e estrutura própria, pode comunicar uma estória. O roteirista, como emissor, é o autor de uma mensagem que ganhará sentido somente quando um receptor tiver contato com a obra. Muitos roteiros nem chegam a se tornar filme e ainda assim são lidos, sob a forma de livros físicos ou em publicações online. Isto é fundamental para entender que o roteiro não comunica somente à uma equipe de filmagem, mas também a qualquer leitor interessado em se relacionar com seu texto. Esta relação entre autor, obra e público, bem como suas nuances comunicacionais, nos levam à uma aproximação da estética filosófica. Neste texto, não avançamos por esse caminho, mas lançamos questões para pensar o roteiro como um texto de valor próprio. Acreditamos que ele pode ser apreciado, ou melhor, ser objeto de uma experiência estética do leitor. Afinal, se o roteiro comunica, o que impede que ele também possa ser analisado do ponto de vista de suas qualidades estéticas?

Les films écrits ou co-écrits par Luc Besson occupent une place centrale dans la gestion par EuropaCorp de son image de marque comme dans les débats suscités par l’essor de ce cinéma de genre dit « à l’américaine ». Pour interroger ces enjeux, nous analyserons l’économie créative de ces films « bessoniens », leurs stratégies d’internationalisation ainsi que leurs réceptions auprès des usagers du site Imdb. Pour cela, nous proposerons une étude générique, culturelle et stratégique, structurée en trois axes : on reviendra d’abord sur les critiques adressées aux récits et productions Besson, telles que l’indigence supposée des scénarios ; nous évoquerons ensuite leurs modes d’écriture et leur positionnement face à Hollywood, en mettant en évidence le savoir-faire et l’originalité qu’ils impliquent ; nous montrerons enfin que leur hybridité s’inscrit dans une stratégie innovante d’optimisation des politiques de production et de fidélisation d’un public toujours plus large et mondialisé autour de la marque « Besson ».

A Semantic Network Analysis of Showtime's "The Chi"

The Chi—a Showtime series debuting on January 7th, 2018—is a contemporary, coming-of-age story set in Chicago’s South Side.

A semantic network analysis of the “Buff” draft of The Chi’s pilot episode script was undertaken.

The script rates poorly on two, text-based, leading indicators of series performance—cognitive complexity and concept specificity.

The broader story also rates poorly on two content-based predictors of subsequent series performance—genre breadth and prior source material.

Based on these four factors, six comparable and another twenty “anti-comparable” series were identified.

Four of the comparables (67%) were canceled after the first season and five of six (83%) failed to reach a third season. In marked contrast, only 1 in 20 anti-comparable series was canceled after season one and only three have failed to get a third season thus far.

Unless The Chi’s pilot script, dated October 15th, 2015, was subjected to major re-writes before filming began in April 2017, there is little reason to expect that the subsequent series to perform any better than its comparables.

Transformations in the consumption of audiovisual products that had already been pointed out since the last decade were unexpectedly accelerated since the beginning of  the COVID -19 pandemic. Artificial intelligence applied to natural language processing systems opened up the possibility of making movies from scripts entirely written by computers, especially since 2020.The final products still bump into cognitive limits and generate controversy, but seem to indicate a path of no return in the human-machine creative contribution. Tools and criteria have been sought to evaluate the results of autonomous texts, from the traditional Turing Test to others based on new parameters, and also to solve ethical and legal questions about its use that should be intensified in the near future.

The reflections on screenwriting in Mexico constitute a tradi- tion that has not been critically reviewed. This article recovers fundamental texts of Mexican writers and teachers in order to analyze their attempts to articulate this practice. The texts os- cillate between the poetics, the essay and the didactic manu- al. A stimulating dialogue arises from interweaving their ideas about the nature of the screenplay, its narrative and dramatic dimensions, the specificity of this type of writing and the cre- ative process. The review begins with El conocimiento cine- matográfico y sus problemas (1965), written by José Revueltas and ends with the unpublished book by Beatriz Novaro, El roce de los lenguajes (2013).

Uma das críticas de Edgar Morin à ciência contemporânea é a de que aprendemos a analisar, a separar, mas “não aprendemos a relacionar, a fazer com que as coisas comuniquem”. Enquanto guionista de vídeos para a educação digital, parte do meu trabalho atravessa a adaptação de linguagem, seja do livro científico para o vídeo, seja do público especializado para o grande público. É um trabalho que me faz questionar frequentemente: como melhorar o acesso ao conhecimento especializado sem que nesse caminho a complexidade se perca? A complexidade que procuro nada tem a ver com dificuldade, mas com o pensamento relacional defendido por Edgar Morin. E o acesso é tanto ao meio como ao conteúdo, tendo o cuidado de não deixar cair nas simplificações reducionistas ou na mera capitalização que retira o caráter problematizador do conhecimento. É possível? Qual o papel do guionista nesse contexto? Quais caminhos podem ser percorridos por gestores, professores e investigadores no ambiente das universidades, a fim de aproximar conhecimento científico e público amplo? Em diálogo com Edgar Morin, trazemos ainda a visão da teoria crítica de processos de criação de Cecília Almeida Salles, especialmente no que se refere ao olhar de continuidade da criação nos sujeitos dos processos comunicativos, entre eles o público.

Como ideia de partida, este trabalho trata do desenvolvimento do cinema sonoro no trabalho de construção de roteiro do ator e diretor Charlie Chaplin. Analisando, através deste viés, as configurações que o invento do cinema com som trouxeram para os trabalhos do cineasta, e, particularmente, de sua primeira obra sonora -também considerada a sua obra prima. Desta forma, este trabalho analisa principalmente duas de suas mais relevantes obras: "Gold Rush", de 1925, e "The Great Dictator", de 1940. Uma breve análise ainda é feita de outras duas obras, que servem de passagem de suas produções mudas para as sonoras: Uma versão reeditada de "Gold Rush", datada de 1942, onde Chaplin insere narração e música próprias para o filme, e outra breve análise do filme "Modern Times", de 1936, cujo pensamento era o de um filme ainda mudo com uma série de inserções sonoras que funcionassem de uma determinada maneira. Buscando uma análise dos filmes a partir do roteiro e da sua construção, o trabalho tem por objetivo entender um pouco melhor as particularidades do cineasta referente ao uso do som. Ao modo como esta invenção acabou transformando sua forma de construir os seus roteiros, e o modo como estas novas configurações acabaram influenciando outros aspectos dos filmes, tais como suas mise en scène, sua edição e montagem e a performance dos atores.

We extract textual and content data from the pilot episode scripts of 181 new, dramatic television series and use it to predict the 18-49 demo ratings for the first five episodes of the series' first seasons. As expected, we find that the originality of a series' premise, the track record of success of the its creator(s), and the cognitive complexity of its pilot episode script each explain a statistically significant proportion of the variance in ratings between the 181 series but none of the variance within series.
